Third Person's POV
"This is our counter. You will be spending most of your time here since you're new," Sakura says. She has been giving Sasuke a tour of the restaurant. Sasuke hasn't said a word to her during this time. "You will take care of making coffees, teas, and watching the cash register in the morning, and later in the day you will take care of placing people at tables." Sakura pulls out a white board that shows a birds-eye view of the tables in the restaurant. "This you will use to decide where a party will go. do you see these markers." Under the counter top was a bin filled with white-board markers. On the bin is a chart. The chart has the names of the waiters and waitresses that work there and each of them have a different color next to their names. "You will use those markers to color code who gets the table and who is working at that table. Normally we take a section of the tables to make our lives easier, so when you place a party at a table, spread it out so we all can an even amount, okay?"
"Hn." Sakura places the board next to the bin of markers.
"Okay now I will show you how we make our coffees." Sakura turns around to the table filled with coffee makers. "These are french presses. We use these to brew the coffee. Now, it is very important that the ratio of the grounds and water is right. You don't want to put four tablespoons of coffee beans in one cup of water. There is a chart that explains the ratios so don't worry about memorizing them. The first thing you want to do is measure the coffee beans, then you will grind them in a manual grinder which are these." Sakura points to the burr grinders that are next to the french presses. Near the table are shelves full of coffee beans. Sakura takes one of the bags and a measuring cup and places the perfect amount in a manual grinder, and starts to turn the lever around. "After that put them in the french press." She puts the grinds into the press. "Then you will heat the water. We have electric kettles for that. Heat the water for about a minute. The water should be 195 degrees F. Add the water to the press and let the water and grinds soak together for four minutes. When the four minutes are up, push the plunge all the way to the bottom." Sakura pours water into the kettle and turns it on.
After a minute Sakura takes the water out of the kettle and pours it into the press. Four minutes later she pushes the plunge down, and then pours the coffee in a cup. "Do you think you understand?" A lot of information was just thrown at Sasuke, but he can take it.
"Hn."
'Does that mean yes or no?' Sakura thinks. "Okay why don't you try now." Sakura walks over to the shelves full of coffee bean bags and grabs one that is more than half empty. Sasuke follows the steps easily as if he has been doing this for years. Until he gets to turning the lever on the manual grinder. Sasuke turns the lever very roughly and quickly. "Um Sasuke, don't turn the lever so roughly, you might break ..." Sakura puts her soft and smooth hands over Sasuke's big and strong ones and turns the lever gently and slowly. "Getting the coffee done quickly is important, but you don't want to force it." This action makes Sasuke blush lightly, which makes him turn his head in a way that would block his face from being shown.
Sakura helps Sasuke finish the coffee, and then their boss comes back around. "How is everything over here?" he asks with a big grin.
Sakura says with a big energetic voice "Great! Sasuke here is really good at picking things up."
"Great! Keep it up! Don't forget to smile!" says that towards Sasuke since he hasn't smiled once since he has been here. Sasuke's expression doesn't change. He then says "Sakura help him," and leaves them alone again.
"The smile doesn't have to be real, just enough for the customers. If you don't smile the customers won't be happy, and that... is the most important thing!" Sakura stops half way in her sentence as if she was trying to remember lines on a script. In a low tone Sakura asks Sasuke, "Did that sound believable?"
"What?"
"Did what I just say sound believable? will make you say a bunch of weird crap like that to get good customer reviews."
"Oh... uh... not really."
Sakura chuckles. "Yeah, it didn't sound right, but if I have to say crap like that to get a good tip, then I will. That's why you should try smiling more. You will get better tips. Try it."
Forcing a smile proves to be harder for Sasuke than he thought. His brows furrow and he looks constipated. Sakura laughs nervously to try to hide how uncomfortable his face is making her. "Okay maybe you won't need to smile. Maybe your good looks will cover that for you."
'Good looks?' Sasuke asks like she never said that, but it never leaves his mind.
"I think that's all you need to know for now. I will tell you more once you officially start. So, have you ever worked in the restaurant industry?" she questions.
"No."
"Well, let me tell you, you are going to soon realize how annoying and insane some people can be. I have been working here for four years and I have many stories to share," Sakura puts her hand up to her forehead and rests her elbow on the counter, "This place has really tested my patience. I'm surprised I've lasted this long." At this point Sakura is chuckling while remembering all the customers she has dealt with. "Thank god I'm not in college anymore."
Sakura mentioning college strikes Sasuke, making him remember his quick college life. "What did you go to college for?"
Sakura moves her hand from her face and places both of her arms on the counter, and leans on it. "Medical engineering. I'm hoping I can find something in that field soon, but for now, I am trying to save up so I can live on my own and not in my parents house..." There comes a point when Sasuke stops listening to her and thinks about where he would be if he finished college? Would he be doing what he wants to? Would his dad not disown him? Would he still be with Ino? Envy fills Sasuke at this moment. He is no longer looking at Sakura. Now he is staring at the floor, hoping that she would just stop talking.
"Sasuke? You still with me?" Sasuke breaks out of his daze. His expression doesn't really change though. His lips are pushed to the side and his onyx eyes are looking gloomy and gray. 'I feel horrible for thinking this, but he kinda looks cute right now.' Ignoring her sudden thoughts Sakura says with a soft smile on her face, "Hey, are you okay?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah." His response doesn't sound real at all, but Sakura decides not to pry.
A voice from the back calls out, "SAKURA! I NEED YOU! 'That must be Tenten.'
"I have to go help her. I'll see you tomorrow."
"Yeah." Sakura turns and leaves. Under Sasuke's breath he mumbles, "See you tomorrow."
