Staring at the quite large walls of the maze, both the top students from class 1-A were not expecting anything like this to be the first that greeted them when they came into this area. The both of them expected to be in some sort of arena with a crowd filled with spectators, scouts, heroes,etc... but instead got this.
"Welcome ladies and gentleman! It's that time of the year again!" It was not difficult to recognize whose voice shouted that. The announcement made both the students look around for a second from where it came from exactly before looking at each other and shrugging in the end.
"I guess he'll explain now what exactly we have to do."
Todoroki nodded to his classmate's comment. "I think so too."
They were both still not sure what exactly the objective was and thought they would have to figure it all out by themselves when they were sent to this room and left alone. Now, they paid close attention to what exactly was going to be said.
"Now you're probably wondering why exactly the giant jumbotron is in the middle of the arena instead of somewhere else." They could hear a sigh come from the mic, which they guessed was from the other announcer next to Present Mic.
Naruto chuckled inwardly from that. He could guess why the other person sighed, knowing how his teacher was when it came to announcing anything. Especially from the memory of the entrance exams.
"This year, the first 2 events will not take place at our arena like all the other years before." Unknown to the 2 students and many others out there at other entrances of the maze. The giant jumbotron in the Arena turned on, showing all the first year students from every class standing at the entrance of the maze listening along.
Naruto pursed his lips in thought hearing that. He understood that they weren't too far from the main part of school since the busride was only 20 minutes long but it surprised him that the school was willing to let the students go out from school grounds after an attack on their class.
'Looks like All Might and the school are very confident' He wasn't complaining since he was glad the event wasn't cancelled. 'Like All Might said, security has probably been beefed up.'
His thoughts were broken when another voice interrupted Present Mic bringing him back to focus on the announcers.
"Just get to the point!" Another voice chimed in, the voice and tone giving away who exactly it was that said it.
Present Mic looked at his friend in mock disappointment but continued nonetheless, "Let's get right into the first event!" The screen the spectators were looking at switched over to showing the entire area of the giant maze. Loud cheers came from the fans as the students were still patiently and anxiously waiting for their objective to be given to them. The teachers waited for the cheers to slow down before continuing.
"All of you have been split into teams of 2 students. Both of you will have to work together to navigate through the maze and get into the middle area. You all have been dropped at different points outside the maze with some being closer to the middle and some farther."
"What?!"
"How is that even fair?!"
"Hmm, we don't know if we're positioned closer or farther."
"Damn it!"
"Now hold on." Present Mic called out, hearing all the complaints from the students as did the spectators in the crowd through the mics installed in the entire structure the students were at.
"If you think being further than the middle of the maze is unfair, then you should give up already at this point." Aizawa's firm voice cut off the complaining students, getting it to quiet down, "Don't expect your life as heroes to be easy. You don't go into a situation expecting it to be easy for you. Life is not fair, get over it and deal with it."
The students were all quietly contemplating on what was said to them with some already nodding in understanding.
Present Mic let out a chuckle at how his friend managed to calm them down, "Like my fellow teacher here said, you can't expect everything to come easy to you in life. Hero or not, it doesn't matter. The objective may sound simple but there is one more thing I have to mention."
The students looked a bit surprised when a small part of the wall opened up and out came a small box, prompting the students to get closer and open it to see what was inside. Once they did, they were a bit confused to see an object resembling some sort of key but it didn't seem to be complete.
"That right there, is another part of your objective. You might be wondering what exactly it is and why it looks broken. Well that's where your second objective comes in. Out there in the maze, all of you will have to find the second part of the key you're holding right now. Keep in mind that the number of the second part of the keys are limited, so you'll have to be quick in order to find one and get to the middle of the you're there, you'll know what to do with the keys. All of you have 1 hour to finish this, so START!"
Naruto closed his hand and put the half key in his pocket before looking back at his teammate. "Let's move already, we'll think of a plan when we're searching on the way. We only got 1 hour anyway."
"Understood." Shoto replied and followed the blonde as they started running. The dual eyed boy was in for a surprise when his classmate suddenly brought out his previously destroyed wings.
'He got them back?'
"Gimme a second, I wanna check something out." Using his newly healed wings, he flew upwards towards to try and look over the entire maze. "Guh!" The winged boy grunted in pain when his head collided against the "open" roof that showed a clear sky.
"The hell!" Naruto put up his hands against the roof and let out a breath of annoyance seeing it was merely a fake sky. Suddenly a mic turning on sound caught both his and Todoroki's attention.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to mention for anyone who tries to fly. Small little thing I got to mention is that you can't go higher than the ceiling. Now back to the race!"
'You couldn't say that earlier, damn it!'
The boy floated back down to the ground after the disappointment of his plan not working.
"That didn't go to plan." Shoto stated. Naruto nearly gave him a look of annoyance at that but knew that his classmate was just being unintentionally sarcastic and merely stated it without any of being sarcastic or hurting. Grumbling a bit, he replied:
"Yeah, I know... Let's just go and do it normally then." The boy finished with an annoyed sigh, still a bit mad that his teacher hadn't warned him before since that blow to his head had hurt quite a bit. The duo started running into the maze as they ran by the first hall that spanned longer than they expected before coming across their first turn to the left.
They finally came to a stop after half a minute of constantly taking the only left turn they could.
'Ok, left or right here' Naruto thought, looking in both directions.
Shoto asked, "Which way do you think we should go?"
"Uhh," The blonde stammered for a second thinking about it. "I don't really know… This is why I hate mazes." He sighed in annoyance again. He was beginning to realize that he'd been sighing much more lately, 'Stupid maze'
"We will have to choose one. We can't split up to see which way is the right one either."
Looking in both directions a couple more times, the blonde finally decided. "Let's go right, the path's been left the entire time so let's change it up a bit." It may have been random but his gut was telling him to go right instead of left and that method hadn't let him down this time.
"Okay." The teen commented and followed behind his classmate towards the right, coming up to another left turn some seconds later before they both came to another stop seeing the very long path in front of them. Seeing the path, they got some doubts about them making the right choice for some reason but nonetheless did continue running forward.
'Why does this feel like it's a trap.' Naruto thought, slightly hesitating while running alongside todoroki. It was only 2 minutes later that they finally arrived at the end of the path which led to them taking 2 more left turns before ending up at a dead end.
"Damn it!" The curse left his mouth before sighing in disappointment once again. Next to him, The dual haired boy also showed a slightly irritated expression as he was on the same page as his blonde classmate. They both did not like mazes that much and the reason was showing now why they didn't.
"Come on, let's not waste more time and get back." Todoroki said, turning around and running back with Naruto following behind a second later. "Naruto," He called out, getting the blonde's attention. "Bring out your wings so you're faster, I'll use my ice to slide faster so we can get through all this faster."
"Alright, you sure that's a good idea though?" Naruto questioned before elaborating, "I mean, from what we've seen so far, the maze is looking like it's pretty big and you having to use your powers would drain your energy much faster."
Todoroki nodded in understanding and replied: "Don't worry about that. We've already wasted more than 5 minutes and we are still at the start. We have only 1 hour to get the second key and get to the middle, so it's best to not think too much of wasting or draining energy right now." Hearing no argument back, ice started coming up from his feet to slightly elevate him and slide forward at much higher speeds than before.
It prompted Naruto to bring out his wings to start flying next to him as they quickly got back to their previous spot and took a left turn this time. Now that they both calmed down, they quickly realized that letting their dislike of mazes get the best of them was not the best idea.
'They're probably looking at how we're going to do all of this right now.' Naruto realized thinking about it. The first event was probably created to give the other classes who didn't exactly have very powerful quirks to use their intelligence more to complete their objective instead of using their gifted quirk more.
It was 10 minutes later of navigating through the big maze before they finally saw something ahead.
Squirting his eyes to try and get a better look at, Naruto called out, "I think we might have found a place with one of the 2nd keys."
"Good. We can't waste much time, let's finish this fast." Both of them started to speed up and get there faster which they did some seconds later. They did not expect it to be this big. It was an entire square area resembling the place that was used for the entrance exam, though there weren't as many buildings.
"The 2nd key might be somewhere here." Turning to look at his teammate, Shoto asked, "Do you want to split up to try and find it?"
Nodding in response the blonde answered further. "Sure, you go left and I'll go right. We're meeting back in here, right?" The heterochromatic boy nodded back and ran to the left, leaving Naruto to go check out the right side of the place.
"HELP!"
The teen was about to make his move but the faint sound of a shout for help stopped him from doing so alongside his teammate who had managed to get a bit further ahead. Narrowing his eyes in suspicion, he signaled his teammate to come back who had stopped and looked back in wonder.
"I think we should hold off on splitting up for now, let's see what exactly that cry of help was first." Naruto suggested
Todoroki agreed with that. "The shout came from the right." Motioning the blue eyed boy to follow along, they both started making their way towards the direction the help shouts came from, stopping everyone once in a while to make sure and listen to the voice to see if they were heading the right way.
"We're definitely getting closer, it doesn't sound much further now." They arrived at their destination a minute later, getting greeted with an area that was rocky and did not have buildings. In the middle of the rocky area was a man bound to a chair, the area surrounding the man looking like it was a pit. The bound looked at them with hope in his eyes when he spotted the 2 learning heroes having arrived.
"Hey, you guys, quickly get me out here!" The man shouted as he tried to wiggle himself out of the chair to no avail.
'Hostage!' Both the students quickly recognized what kind of situation they were dealing with here. Wasting no time, Naruto quickly brought out his wings and glanced at Shoto, nodding towards the hostage. "I'll go and get him from there quickly." Todoroki understood clearly as he gave back his own nod of understanding prompting the blonde to jump up and start flying towards the hostage.
Shoto narrowed his eyes from his spot, not liking the situation they were in and knew it wouldn't be as easy as this. His worries came true when Naruto dodged an incoming attack mid-flight towards him.
"Huh, I knew it wouldn't be as easy as this." Naruto commented on having had the same feeling as his teammate. They had both understood and quickly decided to try and draw out whoever had set up the hostage situation when they glanced at each other.
'Robots, just like during the entrance exams, though this time they're armored and they look different. Act differently too. Probably made especially for this exam to act as villains for this situation.' The blonde observed before taking a look around his surroundings, he saw more of the same robots pop up from different directions all aimed looking at him and his teammate. The latter quickly used his ice powers to slide up next to him as they stood back to back, facing their opponents.
In the Arena with the crowd and the announcers, the screen started focusing on both Naruto and Shoto as the crowd watched on eagerly. "Oho, looks like the first duo found one of the challenges in the maze."
Enji Todoroki, the number 2 hero in the world leaned forward, eyeing the screen with keen eyes. "Let's see how you do, Shoto."
"Grumpy as ever, eh."
It was not hard to recognize that voice for Endeavor, having heard it many times as he didn't even bother to turn around before calling out, "Hawks, I didn't expect you to be here. You don't usually attend these events."
Hawks came up to stand aside him, looking at the screen with a proud smile, the number 3 hero replied. "I got a good reason to come attend it this time."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You'll see."
Endeavor turned his head to look at him curiously and saw the younger hero watching the screen with a proud look on his face, more specifically the blonde that was next to his son. The hero remembered a meeting some years ago where Hawks had talked about adopting a child he had found. He had disregarded it at that time as it had been a time where a family problem was on his mind.
But now, being reminded of that, he looked back at the screen, willing to pay more attention to someone else other than his son.
Back with the duo. They eyed their opponents carefully, seeing them come out of their previously hiding spot to surround them. "You distract them and get them away while I take care of the hostage."
"Got it!" Todoroki confirmed, bursting into action by using the ice powers of his dual quirk to thrust himself into the middle of the robots, attracting some of them away from Naruto. The ground started freezing from his foot onwards towards the robots at a rapid pace, catching some of them until they were fully frozen.
He did not stop there as ice spikes spiraled out from him towards the frozen robots and instantly caused them to shatter to pieces. His eyes narrowed when the destroyed robots were simply replaced by multiple others that came into the fight.
The numbers of the robots increasing did not bother him at all as he used his powers to block off a charging robot with an ice shield before extending his ice to encase the robot to freeze and shatter it. Evading the incoming attacks with his ice powers, he started gliding around the area before coming to a stop once he made a full circle and trapped them within it.
Touching the circle, he made sure the inside was completely frozen before destroying the entire structure completely and in turn destroying the robots that were trapped inside.
Satisfied with his work, he turned around but was in for a surprise when even more robots came out to face him. 'How is there no end to them!?'
While the heterochromatic teen continued fighting and distracting the robots, Naruto had started flying towards his target. A couple of the robots came to stand in front of the hostage and his way, making him bring up his hands as they lit up on fire before he swiped them in front of him, creating a fire attack that blew the robots out of his way, giving him a clear path towards his target.
An annoyed expression flashed through his face seeing his way get blocked again. While his previous attack did not kill or destroy the robots, it did manage to get them out of the way long enough for him to manage to get to the hostage. Speeding up a bit on his flying, the blue eyed teen merely decided to ignore them and blitz past them.
"Wait i forgo-" The hostage tried shouting a warning in a bit of panic, as evident by his expression and tone. Though the bound man stopped when he saw it was too late and the trap had already been set off by the incoming student. The man was a bit impressed by the agile display that the student showed as he dodged the trap that set off multiple new types of robots emerging from the ground to try and ensnare the teen.
"Of course there are traps, why wouldn't there be any traps…!" Naruto muttered in annoyance, berating himself for not seeing the obvious fact that traps were something extremely obvious during hostage situations such as these.
"Sorry, that's my bad, I shoulda warned you ahead." The sheepish comment from the hostage did not make Naruto's situation not any better as he opted to ignore the man for now and focused on his new foes that appeared.
'How many types of robots did they create for this?' The new robots looked different from the ones they saw first. While the previous ones looked like a bulkier version of the entrance exam robots, these were just as bulky if not more so but had a round body shape with humanoid arms and legs sticking out of the main body parts.
'Tried to capture me, huh.' The student mused in silence, seeing the very tight and thick net having gotten the rubble on the ground in its snare. The net had come out of the new robots.
His musing came to an end when even more of the new robots started trying to capture him by shooting more of those nets at him. He had to fly up high pretty quickly to evade the attacks and started flying through the multitude of attacks that came at him. Landing somewhere as he came to a stop once the attacks stopped, giving him a brief second to analyze his current situation.
'Damn it' It didn't take him long to realize that the robots had managed to get him further away from his target. Looking at his current position to see the robots right beneath him with him being right in the middle of them. A perfect idea came to his mind as he leaped into the air while his hands caught on fire before he aimed them downwards.
"Hibashira!"
A big pillar/column of yellow fire spiraled downwards until it made contact with the ground and exploded outwards, consuming the entire area with its flame and in turn melting down the robots that had no chance at all to dodge the incoming assault of fire.
Having seen his new technique work out pretty well, Naruto used this opportunity to quickly fly as fast as he could towards the bound man, making sure to pay extra attention to the area to see if any traps were still yet to be activated. Having seen nothing, he touched down the ground next to the hostage who looked even more impressed after that previous display.
"Wow, kid. I got to hand it to ya, that was quite the show."
"Thank you, but that doesn't matter right now." Naruto replied back, a part of him wanting to be giddy at that but his willingness to try and stay professional like a hero was overwhelming that feeling at that point.
"Okay, gotta get you outta here, let's see."
"Take your time kid, got all day here." The sarcastic/joking comment only got a deadpan look in return from Naruto as he opted to ignore the man and look for a way to free the man without hurting him. After a couple seconds of thinking, he shook his head and took a hold of the lock around the man's hands.
The man felt the lock and in turn his hands started to heat up making him sweat slightly, "You sure burning it is a good idea?"
"You sure do like to talk a lot. Don't worry, it'll be fine. Just give me a couple of seconds."
"You can never be too careful, kid." The man replied, chuckling nervously as the heat really started going up before he let out a sigh of relief some seconds later when it quite easily melted together with the other bindings that were connected to the main one on his hands without even harming him at all.
"See," Naruto smiled in satisfaction at his work. "Perfectly fine. Now I just gotta get you somewhere safe from here." The man did not object as he stood up from the chair he was bound to before freezing in place causing Naruto to look at him in confusion before looking behind him to see the robots he had destroyed being back back twice in numbers.
"What?!" The sight baffled him completely. The new attack he used was one of his new strongest ones and had completely destroyed all of them but seeing them return with twice the numbers when he had only been busy for not even half a minute was shocking to him.
Calming himself down, Naruto took a hold of the man and started flying away from the area while avoiding any attacks from the robots.
"Whoa!" Naruto ignored the panicked cries of the man as he zoomed through the air at fast speeds, finally stopping at the first building and dropping off the man there.
"You should be safe here, me and shoto will take care of the robots before we come back." He was flying back before the man could reply back anything as he opted to sigh instead.
"I did not expect the students to be this good when U.A. told me about this hostage situation."
Back with Naruto, the blonde arrived back in the fight field to see the robots were all moving towards his classmate Shoto who was still fighting off the robots with ease. His eyes narrowed slightly in thought. 'They stopped following me after I got out of the area, that means they must have a limited range. Could someone be controlling them?!' Keeping that in mind, he moved in to join Shoto in the fight.
Todoroki glanced behind him briefly for a second once he heard Naruto land behind him before looking back at his foes in front. "I take it, the hostage is safe?"
"Yeah, he's safe, don't worry. What can you tell me of these robots?"
"There's no end to them, they come back in double numbers once you get rid of them. What about you?"
"Same for me," Pointing his fingers at the robots, some fire bullets were fired off blowing back his enemies, giving him and Shoto some more time. "Though it looks like they have a limited range. They can't go outside this area. I think someone might be controlling them."
Clicking his tongue in annoyance, they both continued fighting off the robots. It wasn't difficult for them to fight them off but it was just annoying since they kept coming back with double the numbers. 'Coming back with double the numbers…' Naruto thought about it for a bit inside his mind as a theory came to his mind.
"I might have an idea," The dual haired boy quickly turned to look at him for further explanation hoping the idea would work since the robots were annoying him quite a lot. "I need you to freeze this entire area for me."
"The entire area?" Shoto asked curiously, one of his eyebrows raising too.
"Yes, it's not too much is it?"
"No, I'll do it." Shoto did not really get the point in continuing to kill them off if they only kept coming back in double the numbers but was willing to put faith and trust in his classmate's idea. Ice started coming out from his feet at rapid pace as just in mere seconds, the entire area's ground was frozen along with every robot that was there leaving Naruto looking on in interest and Todoroki sweating slightly.
"Stop, that's good! Don't shatter them." Naruto called out stopping Shoto from shattering all of them.
'Let's see now.' An entire minute passed but nothing of significance happened.
The heterochromatic teen next to Naruto realized what exactly his plan was now. "I see." He stated in understanding.
The ground started rumbling as Naruto smiled in satisfaction again, "Looks like the main guy is finally coming out."
The frozen robots shattered completely as the ground broke off from a much bigger robot appearing from the ground. The robot was bigger than the one in the entrance exam that Naruto had faced off against though this one looked much more humanoid, resembling an autobot from the Transformers movie Naruto had seen with Keigo.
"Come on, let's finish it!" Naruto called out getting a nod in agreement from his classmate. Flying up towards their new enemy, he used his flight to evade the surprising fast strikes from the robot.
'Faster than I expected.' Though the speed wasn't too big of a problem for him as kept evading the strikes before stopping right in front of the robot at eye level.
"Parusujetto!"
His palms clapped against one another, bringing forth a jet of fire from heading that head towards the head of the robot, colliding with it and causing an explosion to go off as smoke blocked off everything.
Naruto waited a couple of seconds before being disappointed when the smoke cleared showing that the head only slightly got singed by the fire attack. 'Okay, much more durable too then.' He noted.
His eye caught Shoto moving forward to them as the teen had opted to observe for the first few seconds. Seeing a nod from the dual haired boy, Naruto quickly moved back a bit as just a second later, an enormous glacier suddenly came up and impaled a part of the disoriented robot. The robot started quickly getting frozen by the ice spreading before he tried cracking it but stopped just short to see Naruto preparing another attack.
'This time, it should work.'
Naruto had held out his right hand as a fireball half the size of shoto's glacier was building up. The color flickered through red and yellow before eventually staying yellow. He brought back his hand and hurled it forwards.
"Entei!"
The attack came into contact with the half frozen body of the robot, instantly creating the biggest explosion they had so far as both students patiently waited to see the result of their combined effort, even though they hadn't completely gone all out.
They were both quite satisfied to see smoke clear and half of its body being completely destroyed before it fell down while an object shone through on the ground where the robot's core previously was. Shoto walked up to the object before picking it up and holding it over to Naruto who landed next to him.
"Sweet, found the 2nd key then. Let's go check up on that hostage real quick and then we should try and get to the middle so we can finish it."
Pocketing the 2nd key, they headed towards the building Naruto had dropped the hostage off at but stopped when they met the hostage just after only running a couple of meters towards the direction.
"What are you even doing here? I told you it's safer for you out there." Naruto's annoyance was clear before the man held up his hands.
"Hey, calm down. I came to see what the explosions were about since I'm not just a "hostage" but I also have to make sure the student's don't get too hurt. Besides, your objective is finished anyways. So, congratulations. You're nearly there."
Naruto still grumbled in annoyance at the man's comment but Shoto gave him a thankful nod nonetheless for being concerned about them. "Thank you, could you tell us what the right way to the middle is?" He asked nonchalantly, surprising not only Naruto but the man as well.
The man chuckled to himself for a second before replying. "Haha, you're cheeky, huh. Well they didn't say I couldn't help so I guess it wouldn't hurt to say it then." Pointing towards the left direction that leads back into the buildings area, he said, "Just go down the main road following the buildings and you'll come across the right path that'll lead you to the middle."
"Thank you!" Shoto once again thanked him before running off towards the direction alongside Naruto, passing the many buildings before coming across the path the man was talking about. "Looks like he was right."
Naruto nodded back. "Yes, come on, let's hurry. This maze is annoying me." They continued navigating through the rest of the maze, not coming across any more problems except for coming against one other team that had been quite easy to defeat.
They had tried to take the 2nd key away from Naruto and Shoto but had been swiftly dealt with and left there while they continued trying to get to the middle before they finally saw something coming up ahead.
"I think we might be there. I see some part of a forest up ahead."
They upped their speed to get there faster before they finally arrived at the place, seeing no one else so far being there but a crate with 4 locks on them.
"Huh, looks like we're the first ones here."
XXXXXXXXXX
I'm gonna be honest. I kinda struggled with writing this chapter and working on this fic in general. I don't know why exactly that is the case, it might be some sort of writer's block and I hope it goes away but I tried my best.
I was actually planning on adding the perspective of some other characters but scrapped it cuz I didn't want this to drag out too much, so I just showed Naruto's and Shoto's perspective.
Tell me what you guys thought by leaving a review.
See you next time.
