Sorry, it's been a while since my last update! Life hit me hard these past few months, but now that things are looking up, I wanted to try and keep up this story. Hopefully, I can finish it before the year ends.
Another thing that really kicked me into writing this chapter, was the news of the Netflix spin-off. I'm really surprised they decided to make it after all these years. lol Thought it was really ironic that they're making it about Donna and Eric's daughter and here I am writing about their first kid. haha
Are you guys gonna watch it? I want to, but I'm a little put off by the chance that they might burst my season 8 denial bubble. Not to mention with all the stuff going on about Danny Masterson's trial, I doubt they'll feed us any Jackie x Hyde crums. It'll be cute to see Debra and Kurt together again though, they're tv couple goals!
Let me know what you guys think in your reviews!
1969
It was a warm autumn day when two small boys wandered into the Forman's kitchen. Both were slightly covered in dirt and leaves, but that was the norm for little boys. Especially now that they had befriended that rambunctious Kelso boy. Katherine Forman was preparing the finishing touches for her famous Apple Brown Betty when she greets her son and little Steven. "Hello, boys! Did you have fun at the Pinciotti's?"
Eric pouts and picked a leaf out of his hair. "Donna made us rake the leaves with her. Then, she pushed me when I wanted to do something else."
"She said it was a new game," The curly-haired boy nods. "Rake or break. If either of us stopped raking, she'd threatened to break our faces."
Kitty smiles uneasily. "Well... isn't that creative." She made a mental note to pull Midge aside to discuss their daughter's behaviour, soon. "Sweetie, why don't you get washed up for dinner. I'll take Steven home."
Her son stares at his friend, hesitating for a brief moment before approaching her cautiously. "Mom, can Hyde stay for dinner?" He whispered.
Again? Not that she minded, but he had eaten with them almost three times this week. "I'm sure his mother will want him home, Eric." She couldn't even convince herself as she spoke those words. Knowing Steven for almost a year now, it was obvious what his life was like.
"She won't be back until really late," He pleads, tugging on her blouse. "And he said he didn't eat breakfast either. Please?"
Glancing back at the other boy, who was fidgeting with the frayed ends of his sweater, she sighed. Red certainly won't be happy when he gets home, but she'd deal with him later. "Alright, go get your sister and tell her to set an extra place at the table."
Eric's face instantly brightened up. "Thank you!" He beamed before running off upstairs.
"I told him not to ask you,"
Kitty crossed over to the sulking child, gently setting him down on at their kitchen table. "Why not, honey?"
"'Cause you and Mr. Forman always feed me. I told him that I'll be fine on my own, we have chips and pretzels at my place." He mumbled in shame.
"Steven, chips and pretzels aren't real food. You're a growing boy who needs to eat properly. So don't worry about us, we're always happy to have you here." She caresses his cheek, urging him to meet her gaze. "Is something going on at home?"
With a heaviness that no child should have in his voice, he answers. "Just... my ma is mad that my dad hasn't been home for a while, is all." He doesn't say more than that, but the implication is clear. His father is gone and Edna seems to be neglecting him in return.
It angers her, to see an innocent boy suffer because of irresponsible and selfish adults. Part of her wants to march right up to that shrew of a woman and curse at her for making Steven so upset. And yet, she also feels that it isn't her business to get involved in another family's conflict. Kitty tenderly brushes away a smudge of dirt on his cheek. There's always time for the Hyde's to work on their problems, it just might take a little time and some tears. Hopefully, for their son's sake, they'll get their act together soon.
In the meantime, she'll make sure he knows that can always make himself at home here. "I'm sorry to hear that. You know, parents can be difficult sometimes. We're not always right, but we still love you no matter what." She releases his face to squeeze his hand.
"Sounds really complicated," He shrugs. "Guess I'm not having a family when I grow up. I'd rather live alone and shoot squirrels from my porch, like my uncle Buck."
Bemused, she gets up to retrieve a pitcher of apple juice from the refrigerator and a small glass. "Don't say that, you never know what will happen when you get older. You'll meet a nice girl, want to get married and have a baby of your own someday." She pours and hands him the juice before sitting across from him once again.
He takes a small sip, contemplating her words before replying. "I don't like girls, except maybe Donna." She barely counted as a girl in his opinion, since she preferred race cars instead of stupid dolls too. "Besides, I don't want to have a kid if they're just gonna end up like me," Steven looks downcast at the amber liquid in the cup.
Another pang strikes her heart. "Well, make me a promise," She holds up her pinky. "Don't give up. You will find the right girl, the one you want to spend the rest of your life with."
He looks reluctant but laces his pinky with her's, nonetheless. "And when you find her, think of how happy you'll be together. Think of how much love you'll give someone who is a little piece of both of you." Kitty smiles softly. "Because, Steven, children are God's greatest blessing. And that includes you."
With glassy eyes and a small voice, he murmurs, "I promise."
"That's better," She coos before lightly kissing his forehead. "Now, what do you say we go check on Eric? It's been a little too quiet upstairs and I'm afraid that Laurie might've stuffed him into her hamper again."
1981
As the memory fades into the present, Kitty Forman reaches over to grasp the younger lady's forearms in suspense. "You're pregnant?" She asks, unsure if she had heard correctly the first time, or if she had overdone it on the Bloody Marys from lunch.
"Yeah," Jackie nods vigorously, teary-eyed and absolutely radiant.
"Oh!" Kitty weeps in joy as she brings her in for a tight embrace. Her first grandchild!
Donna and Eric stand up as well, making room for Red to walk over to the other couple. He brings Steven in for a hug as well, heartedly patting his back. "Congratulations, son." Eric winces; that stung a bit. Donna squeezes his shoulder as they trade bittersweet looks. Despite the fact that they had decided to keep their own little addition to the family a secret, they were still jealous. Not to say that they weren't also happy for their friends, but it would have been nice to be the ones getting all the support.
"Thanks, Red." Hyde squeezes him back. They pull apart as Kitty drags him into her arms, sobbing words too incoherent to understand. But the message is clear, she's over the moon for them. He just chuckles and allows her to smother him.
Jackie takes the rare opportunity to wrap her arms around the man who showed her more love than her own father. He wasn't always one for affection, but she knew that she had a special place in his heart. "You'll be one hell of a mother." He whispers into her ear.
Tears immediately flood over. "Obviously!" Jackie's voice breaks. It means a lot to hear that from the older man, especially because he never said anything he didn't truly believe.
"Guess that means you'll be pushing up the wedding, huh?" The Forman Patriarch pats her head. "Can't have you tossing an umbilical cord instead of a bouquet into the crowd."
She swallows nervously at this, eyes darting to her fiance. Hyde takes this as his cue and pulls away from Mrs Forman. Jackie quickly moves to his side again, taking his hand to reassure herself that things will be okay. If anything the news of the baby will soften the blow.
Or at least buy her an excuse not to get yelled at.
"Funny you should mention that," Steven fakes a grin. "We actually set another date."
"Already?" Kitty sniffs as she dabs the corners of her eyes. "When?"
Jackie smiles sheepishly. "It's so romantic, Mrs. Forman! Steven and I had to think really hard about moving up the date. We wanted it to be special-"
"Something definitely unique." Eric clears his throat. "One might say, patriotic even." Donna quickly shoves his shoulder, sneering at his inability at keeping his trap shut.
"One might say to shut your pie hole." Hyde glares at him. Like they aren't having a hard enough time spitting the truth out. But that's alright, he'll remember to pay the nerd back for this. "Look, I'll give you guys a hint,"
Crossing over to his adoptive mother, he fiddles with her hand until it's forming the shape of a gun. Once he's satisfied, he points at his fiance and yells. "Mrs. Forman, if I like her, shoot me!"
Realization sets in after a few seconds. "Veteran's Day?" Kitty asks as she lowers her hands.
"You want to get married," Red repeats slowly in disbelief. "On Veteran's Day?"
"It was their first date," Donna chirps in. "Just to make that clear."
"And our first kiss!" Jackie giggles as she hugs Hyde's arm to her chest.
Everyone takes a minute to focus on Red's reaction. He doesn't appear to be upset, but he's not exactly showing any signs of jumping for joy soon either. Hyde decides to be the one to bite the bullet and approaches him.
"Sorry about hijacking your day, man." He clasps his hand on his shoulder. "You cool about us getting hitched?"
"Ah, what the hell, don't worry about it." He waves his hand dismissively. "I hate having to clean up after the neighbours leave, anyways." Wasn't gonna be much of a hit this year either, since that damn kid quit on them. Having a live performer was the only trump card he had. Kitty had forced him to cut down drastically on booze and junk food this year because of his health. Decorations were pretty half-assed too since he had promised to let Bob cover that. That flakey goofball forgot to run to the store before all the good stuff was cleaned out, so they had to settle for the leftovers. Overall, he wasn't going to miss out on much.
"Well, not that I want to sound like this all a bad idea," Kitty speaks hesitantly. "Because it is just so adorable! But how do you two plan on having a whole ceremony in only a few days?"
"Location and catering are all worked out," Thank God for W.B.'s connections. "We figured it'll be fine to have the reception here. So, all we have left to do is rent some tuxs' and scrounge together for some minor details." Hyde states.
"What about your guests? This is pretty short notice, I can't imagine everyone you planned to invite is gonna make it."
"The important people know about it already, won't make a difference if a few of my dad's clients and Jackie's old cheer squad can't show up." He shrugged. His family and best friends were coming and that's all he cared about.
"I was really hoping I'd get to watch those bitches writhe in envy when they'd see me marry my Puddin' Pop." Jackie pouts. "But Steven's right, anyone else is just collateral damage." Besides, if they didn't have the decency to drop everything within a moment's notice, did they really deserve to come at all? This was her wedding, for God's sake!
Donna sits up fast. "Wait, what about the bridal party? And Jackie, your dress?"
Huffing indignantly, the tiny brunette plops back down on the kitchen stool. She situates herself so that Steven is leaning against her chest. It gives her the perfect leverage to run her fingers through the baby hairs on his neck. "Please Lumberjack, within five minutes of Steven using the bathroom after he proposed to me, I had my dress ordered and tailored to my measurements. It's packed in our luggage."
"Is that what you were doing?" Steven furrowed his eyebrows. "I thought you said you were ordering us a pizza." Although, if he remembered correctly, after a copious amount of celebratory sex- there was no pizza.
"Hyde, you proposed to her at a restaurant."
"The portions were tiny!"
Suddenly, Donna pales, even more so than normal. "Oh my god, pizza-" The thought of greasy, elastic cheese sends bile up her throat. It takes all of her willpower to not gag throughout her next sentence. "Jackie, you okay? You look like you want to vomit!"
Jackie, who had been preoccupying herself with her fiancee's curls, peeks at the other girl in question. "Huh? No, I feel fine." Seeing Donna's panicked face, she immediately gets the hint. "Oh! Yeah, n-now that you mention it, can you hold my hair while I throw up?!"
Pushing off Hyde, she lets herself get pulled away by Donna. They hurriedly run out of the kitchen with the redhead's hand clasped tightly over her mouth.
"Okay, let's focus here!" Kitty waved her arms to grab their attention, conveniently unaware of the slipup. "Red, say something! Don't you think they're jumping the gun a little?" She nudges her husband.
The older man simply shrugs his shoulders. "Hey, I'm not paying a cent, so why should I care how they plan on whipping up a wedding?" There have been fewer thought-out actions those dumbasses have been able to pull off, why was this going to be any different? Besides, this was going to be the most important day of their lives, it was all up to them. If they really did manage to put together an impromptu ceremony, then hats off to them.
"Look, mom, I had my doubts too," Eric sighs while crossing his arms. "But things will work out. Because Hyde and Jackie are both incredibly forceful and have no problem resorting to violence to get what they want."
"Working on your best man speech already, Forman?" Hyde asks sarcastically.
"Well, I still need to add in a quip regarding your adorable pet name, Puddin' Pop," Eric replies with a smug smile.
He has to dodge a few marshmallows.
Happy Veteran's Day!
