Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Defence Rests

"Morning Rosa, Jake" Sophia said walking into the lounge

"Good morning" Jake replied

"So, Jake. There is a convention tonight, you will not be invited but I need you to go. Get friendly with Hoytsman, catch him doing Cocaine. Then we can finalise our deal" Sophia said

"You say it like you don't enjoy dating me" Jake said

"Who doesn't love having a fake boyfriend when you're a lesbian" She replied. He raised an eyebrow at her "Ok, you're not that bad" She added

"He's not. Is he?" Rosa asked walking round to kiss Jake

"So how do we play it?" Jake asked, wrapping his arm around Rosa's waist

"You come to the court house and meet me, I mention the party tonight, and then you announce yourself as attending.

Sophia walked out of court and acted surprised to see him.

"Jake. What are you doing here?" She asked. Jake made up some excuse about arguing with Terry

"Well. Now that we've accidentally bumped into each other, what are you doing tonight, you wanna hang out?" He asked

"Oh. I can't I have that event for the Association of the Brooklyn Public Defenders. Remember you called it Satan's Charity ball: Rise of the Demons?" She asked "But I have a minute right now, you wanna take a walk in the park?" she asked

"Oh. Walk in the park, how romantic. I know all the murder spots" Jake said

"Do you want to see them or avoid them?" She asked

"The choice is yours milady" He said taking her arm as they walked off.

"Terry's following" Jake whispered to her

"Plan b. Improv" She whispered back

"This is nice. I feel like old people" He said.

"Should we sit here? Um. Jake there's something I want to talk to you about" she said

"So my boss hasn't been assigning me any of the good cases, and I found out, it's because I'm dating a cop" She said

"What? Did he actually say that?" Jake asked

"No, but my colleagues did" She said "You know, everybody I work with think of cops as the enemy

"Jake, I really like you, but my job's really important to me too. Can we press pause on this?" She asked

"Press pause?" Jake asked

"Just until I figure out what to do with my boss" She said "Is that ok?" She asked

"This is just about your boss?" He asked. "Ok. Yes, let's press pause" He said . They got up and carried on walking.

"Go behind my back. Come to the event, try and eb friendly with my boss to get me the good cases then arrest the SOB" She whispered to him

"Copy that" Jake said before they went their separate ways. Terry walked up to Jake after.

"Alright man?" He asked as Jake started to explain the situation to him, bringing Terry as a witness to the arrest and break up.

Rosa offered to stay at work late, knowing that Jake would be busy with Sophia,

Jake was enjoying a pleasant hell-like evening, when he started to gamble with the idea of gambling. Jake walked off, and as planned, found him snorting cocaine. Sophia and Jake played their parts perfectly, as he walked out with Hoytsman arrested.

Much to their plan, it worked well, and Hoytsman was arrested and brought back to the precinct. Rosa smiled at Jake as he walked in. Sophia walked in soon after and winked at Rosa.

Jake and Sophia had a very public fight. And a very public break up. Rosa watched on smiling, as Sophia walked out

"GO" She mouthed. Terry once more followed.

They walked back to the precinct, and Rosa walked up to Jake

"The deed is done" He said happily

"Good. Now act heartbroken" She said with a wink. They made it to the bar after work and drank in commiserations.
