Chapter 39: When lightning strikes…

A/N- So I'm back. I hope everyone is doing okay in this crazy time and that quarantine isn't driving you too crazy. I figured I's give you another chapter to help with the boredom of staying home. Enjoy!

After paying the bill and stopping by the Tardis so they could pick up some things, they decided to head to city hall in hopes to run into and stop the last Slitheen. They didn't have much of a plan, but the Doctor reassured them that one Slitheen in hiding was no real threat to their safety. Kit was skeptical about that. She remembered going head to head with a single Slitheen. It wasn't an easy fight, but she figured that the Doctor might be right as this Slitheen would be outnumbered. Still, she was cautious and on guard as they came towards city hall.

They walked inside the building with a determination in their step. The climbed up the stairs and looked around. It was quiet. Nothing seemed out of place and everything felt unusually normal. People seemed to be going about their day. Kit didn't like it. It didn't feel right.

"According to intelligence, the target is the last surviving member of the Slitheen family, a criminal sect from the planet—"

"Jack," Kit interrupted. "Trust us, we know."

He gave them all a confused look but shrugged. "Okay since we know who we're up against, we can figure out a plan of attack. I think we assume a basic fifty-seven fifty-six strategy, covering all available exits on the ground floor. Doctor, you go face to face. That'll designate Exit One. Little Red and I will cover Exit Two—

"Why do I have to go with you? Why can't I get my own exit?" Kit interrupted, feeling annoyed over the fact that she couldn't be independent in this plan.

"Cause there's only four exits," Jack replied simply.

"But—"

"Rose, you're Exit Three. Mickey Smith, you take Exit Four. Have you got that?" Jack directed completely ignoring Kit who crossed her arms and grumble in irritation.

"Excuse me," the Doctor stopped him. "Who's in charge?"

Jack rolled his eyes. "Sorry. Awaiting orders, sir."

"Right, here's the plan…" he paused like he was thinking. "Like he said. Nice plan. Anything else?"

Jack looked at him with an annoyed expression. He looked like he was ready to strangle the Doctor. Kit and Rose, on the other hand, smirked at each other trying not to laugh. The Doctor and Jack tended to clash heads a lot as of late. Jack said it was because the Doctor was intimidated and jealous of him. Kit just rolled her eyes over that. Of course, she knew there was some truth to it.

"Present arms," Jack ordered.

"Ready."

"Ready."

"Ready."

Everyone took out their phone one by one.

"I have no phone but ready," Kit said. She still didn't have a phone after it went missing when she came to the past. She knew she was forgetting to ask the Doctor something. It wasn't her fault she kept on forgetting. They had been doing a lot of traveling. Kit had also been distracted by the more pressing matter of the Doctor having trouble accepting she was from the future.

Everyone looked at her and she shrugged. "Lost it awhile back."

"It doesn't matter right now," Jack concluded. "You're with me anyway."

"But remind me when we're done with this mess to give you one," the Doctor added.

"Anyways, back to the task at hand," Jack brought them back. "Speed dial?"

"Yup."

"Ready."

"Check."

Jack nodded satisfied. "See you in hell."

Everyone left in a different direction with Kit following Jack. As they made their way to the second exit, Kit was getting more and more annoyed by the fact that she had to partner up with Jack. It wasn't fair. She was the only one that had gone up against as Slitheen on her own. It frustrated her that she was feeling like she was being babysat.

"This is stupid. Why couldn't I get my own exit to cover?" Kit complained.

Jack sighed. "I told you, there's only four exits."

"Then why couldn't you have had paired up with someone else?"

"Cause you're twelve, Kit and we're facing a giant alien that'll kill you. I'm just trying to keep you safe."

Kit frowned. "I've faced a Slitheen before, by myself and I survived. I'm twelve not five."

Jack gave her a curious look. "Is that how you guys know about the Slitheen? Should I ask what happened?"

She shrugged slightly. "It wasn't too bad. They were just trying to turn the earth into rubble so they could sell it by using nuclear warheads and we simply stopped them by blowing up Downing Street. Pretty normal day really," she smirked. "Oh! And I also got covered in Slitheen guts. Not fun."

Jack shook his head in disbelief. "Does the Doctor always leave a mess behind wherever he goes?"

"Oh, yeah! Big time! So as you can see, I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself," she smiled in triumph.

He sighed but then grinned at her. "Maybe I forgot because of how whinny you're being. Or maybe it's because of how short you are." He patted her head. "You're almost the same height as a five-year-old"

Kit slapped his hand off her head and glared at him. "I'm not THAT short! And I'm not whining!"

Jack burst out laughing which made Kit huff. Jack opened his mouth to retort but before he could say more, his phone rang. He answered it and nodded. "Over and out," he said then looked down at Kit. "It's heading north. Let's go!"

They ran in the direction as fast as they could. A lady with a tea trolling came down the hall. Jack jumped over the tea trolling while Kit moved to dodge it quickly. They continued to run down the hallway until they reached a door to the outside. The pushed through it and ran down the street. As they were running, the spotted the Slitheen trying to run away.

She was a pudgy woman in a pencil skirt and very high heels. Once she saw them, she turned in a different direction. Rose came running in the opposite direction of them. They stopped before they collided with her.

"Who's on Exist Four?" Jack questioned.

"That was Mickey," Rose replied.

Just as she said that Mickey came bursting out of the door he was supposed to be covering.

"Here I am!" He announced.

"Mickey the idiot," the Doctor grumbled, coming up behind them.

"Oh, be fair," Rose defended. "She's not exactly going to outrun us, is she?"

They all turned to watch Margaret run away from them in her high heels. Rose was right. She wasn't going anyway fast. They could probably give her a five-minute head start and still caught her. Unfortunately, just as she thought that Margaret vanished.

"She got a teleport," Jack whined. "That's cheating! Now we're never going to get her!"

"Oh, the Doctor's very good at teleports," Rose reassured him.

The Doctor took out his sonic and held it up. He pressed a button and Margaret reappeared running towards them this time. She stopped when she noticed them and held a surprised expression. She ran away from them again and vanished. The Doctor pressed the same button and Margaret reappeared once again this time with a less than amused face. Kit rolled her eyes when Margaret vanished again. The Doctor used his sonic again to bring Margaret back.

Kit waved at her. "Back again? We sure missed you."

Margaret snarled at her. "You'll run out of power soon."

The Doctor and Kit looked at each other with amusement. "Ah, no. See, unlike you, we can do this forever." She gave Margaret a cocky smile.

Margaret gave them all a nasty look. "This is persecution. Why can't you leave me alone? What did I ever do to you?"

Kit raised her eyebrow. "You're kidding, right?"

Margaret gave her an innocent shrug. "I can't think of a single thing."

"Well, maybe I can refresh your memory," the Doctor put in. "You tried to kill me and destroy this entire planet."

"Apart from that," she tried but no one was having it.

"Why don't we have a little chat inside?" There was no room for argument in his voice.

Margaret glared. "Are you kidding me? So I have even less of a chance of escape. No, I'd rather stay out here thank you very much."

"Oh? Is that so?" The Doctor smirked but it didn't reach his eyes. "I just thought you would want somewhere private so no one can hear about how you're actually a Slitheen," the Doctor said the last part a little bit louder.

"Be quiet!" Margaret hushed him looking around in paranoia. "Fine. You win. We can go inside."

The Doctor smiled in triumph. "Good plan."

...

The Doctor wasted no time with Margaret. The minute they stepped inside and somewhere more private the Doctor bombarded her with questions and accusations. It was mostly directed towards the power plant that she was planning on building.

"So, you're a Slitheen, you're on Earth, you're trapped. Your family gets killed but you teleport out just in the nick of time," the Doctor listed off as they made their way into a large room with a miniature model of the power plant in the center. "You have no means of escape. What do you do? You build a nuclear power station. But what for?"

Everyone looked from the model to Margaret to see what lie she would say this time. "A philanthropic gesture. I've learnt the error of my ways."

Kit scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Oh please."

The Slitheen glared at her. "It's true!"

"If it's so true then why does this power plant just so happens to be right on top of the rift," the Doctor accused.

Margaret faked innocent. "What rift would that be?"

"A rift in space and time," Jack piped in. "If this power station went into meltdown, the entire planet would go…" he made an explosion sound.

"This station is designed to explode the minute it reaches capacity," the Doctor explained.

Rose shook her head. "Didn't anyone notice? Isn't there someone in London checking this sort of stuff?"

Margaret shrugged. "We're in Cardiff. London doesn't care. The South Wales coast could fall into the sea and they wouldn't notice," she stopped and looked shocked. "Oh. I sound like a Welshman. God help me, I've gone native."

Kit ignored her comment and watched her carefully. "So let me guess, you've killed anyone who has mentioned it?"

Kit expected a harsh glare but she didn't expect Margaret's eyes to go soft. "Not everyone."

"What does that mean?" She questioned.

The softness suddenly disappeared. "It's none of your business!"

Kit raised her hands up in surrender. "Alright, fine I'll leave it alone."

Mickey raised his hand. "I have a question. Why would she explode that power plant? Wouldn't she only end up killing herself?"

It was a fair question but Kit was sure the Slitheen would already have a plan to save herself. Still, other than to get revenge, blowing up half the planet seemed kind of unnecessary. So, what was her plan for all this?

"She's got a name, you know," Margaret cut in harshly.

Mickey just rolled his eyes. "She's not even a she, she's a thing."

"Oh, but she's clever," the Doctor put in with a mischievous smile.

He suddenly, with one fluid motion, swept the miniature model off its base. He took the base off the table and turned it upside down. Underneath the base was dozens of wires and flashing lights. She never seen it before, yet her brain was trying to tell her what it was. She didn't want to listen to it though. She was having enough trouble with her new intelligence. She just wanted to sit back and listen to what the doctor has to say like she used to.

"Fantastic," the Doctor said flatly.

"Is that a tribophysical waveform macro-kinetic extrapolator?" Jack asked in excitement and astonishment.

"Couldn't have put it better myself," the Doctor acknowledged.

A tribophysical waveform macro-kinetic extrapolator is a—her brain started to say. Shut up! She told it. She didn't want to know. She just wanted to be unaware of things for once.

Jack grabbed the device from the Doctor and looked over it with pure enthusiasm like a kid at Christmas. "Oo, genius! You didn't build this" he told Margaret.

She shrugged. "I have my hobbies. A little tinkering."

Jack glared at her. "No, no, no. I mean, you really didn't build this. Way beyond you."

"I bet she stole it," Mickey accused.

"What exactly is a tribophysical waveform macro-kinetic extrapolator," Kit cut it. She was getting tired of her brain shouting at her.

Jack put the device on the ground. "It's transport. You see, if the reactor blows, the rift opens. Phenomenal cosmic disaster. But this thing shrouds you in a forcefield. You have this energy bubble, so you're safe," he explained theatrically. "Then you feed it coordinates, stand on top, and ride the concussion all the way out of the solar system."

"It's a surfboard," Mickey concluded.

"A pan-dimensional surfboard, yeah."

Kit imaged herself surfing across the solar system and smile. "Sounds awesome!" Everyone looked at her with accusing eyes. She shrugged. "You know, minus the comic disaster."

Jack smiled at her excitedly. "Oh, it's a blast. No pun intended of course. Did something similar as a Time Agent. I'll let you try one day, Little Red."

She expected the Doctor to speak up at that moment and tell Jack that it was too unsafe but he didn't say a word. Kit looked to the Doctor and noticed him staring at a sign across the room. She didn't know why he was so absorbed in it until she realized that the Tardis hadn't translated it and it was still in its original language. As she stared at it too, she suddenly got a shiver.

"Yes, yes," Margret's voice snapped her out of her haze. "It's all very fun. Unfortunately, I'll never be able to try it thanks to you stupid humans. I could have been home by now and away from this dump."

Mickey shook his head. "You'd blow up a whole planet just to get a lift?"

She sneered. "Like stepping on an anthill."

Before anyone could reply to the comment the Doctor spoke suddenly, "How'd you think of the name?"

Everyone snapped their heads to the Doctor. He was still looking at the sign with an almost scared expression. She was curious by this sign, sure but she was far from scared of it. So why was the Doctor? What was she missing that the Doctor was seeing? It was almost like he was in some sort of trance and she didn't know why. Although, if she were honest with herself, she too could feel the pull of the words. Her mind seemed to scream at her like it knew something she didn't but what it was she had no idea.

"What? Blaidd Drwg?" Margaret asked impatiently. "It's Welsh."

"I know, but how did you think of it?" He asked again, still staring at the sign.

"I chose it at random, that's all," she explained in confusion. She walked around them and towards the Doctor. "I don't know. It just sounded good. Does it matter?"

The Doctor finally turned around. His face held a mix of confusion and concern. Something was definitely wrong. "Blaidd Drwg," he muttered to himself.

Kit gulped. "What does it say in English?"

He looked at her but his eyes seemed miles away. "Bad Wolf."

Kit froze. She'd seen and heard that name a couple of times. Once when the Doctor made her scrub the graffiti off the Tardis and another time at Satellite Five. Gwyneth said something about the big bad wolf too. All those times made her feel weird and made her shiver just like it did now. It couldn't just be nothing. There had to be something to it. She looked up at the words. They were almost screaming at her. They were trying to tell her why they were important but she couldn't figure it out for the life of her. Suddenly she felt as scared as the Doctor did.

"I've heard those words before," her voice suddenly sounded breathless as she continued to stare at the words. "They've been everywhere like they've been following us." She suddenly felt like she wasn't in the room anymore but in a whole different world. The words whispered around her telling her truths that she couldn't understand. "They're telling us something. Something important. Something big." She shivered again. "They make me feel weird."

"But what?" Rose's voice snapped her back to the present. "If they really are following us, what are they trying to tell us?"

Kit looked up at the Doctor and realized he was staring at her with worry but just as that expression was there, it disappeared and was replaced with a smile. "Nah, just a coincidence. Like hearing a word on the radio then hearing it all day."

"But—" Kit started.

"Don't you worry about it, Kit," he pushed and smiled widely but she thought it looked fake. "No reason to feel scared."

Kit wasn't sure what he was getting at but once she looked at Rose's relieved face, she understood what he was doing. She had been scared and so had Rose. He didn't want them to be. He wanted them to feel safe. He was trying to protect them because there was something very off about those words and the Doctor knew it but he didn't want them to worry.

"Anyways, things to do." He clapped his hands together. "Margaret, we're going to take you home."

The Doctor was heading towards the door when Jack spoke up, "Hold on, isn't that the easy option, like letting her go?"

Rose wasn't paying attention to what Jack was saying and smiled excitedly. "I don't believe it! We actually get to go to Raxa…" She stopped when she couldn't get the full name out. The Doctor rolled his eyes at this. "Wait a minute!" She stopped him and tried again. "Raxacor…"

The Doctor sighed. "Raxacoricofallapatorius."

"Raxacorico…" she tried again.

"fallapatorius," Kit finished this time. "Come on, Rose! We practiced this a bunch of times."

"I know! I know!" She waved her off. The first time they went toe to toe with the Siltheen, her and Rose would try to say it and see who could get it first. It was a kind of game they would play to annoy the Doctor. Sometimes they would get it wrong on purpose to see the Doctor get frustrated. "Just give me a second… Raxacoricofallapatorius. That's it! I did it!" Rose cheered as she ran up to the Doctor and hugged him. He lifted her up and smiled widely. When he put her down, Rose and Kit high fived each other with the same excited expression.

"They have the death penalty," Margaret's voice cut through they're cheering like a steel knife. A somber mood descended itself upon them. "The family Slitheen was tried in its absence many years ago and found guilty with no chance of appeal. According to the statutes of government, the moment I return, I am to be executed."

Kit felt a rush of annoyance course through her. She knew what this Siltheen was doing. She was hoping they would feel so guilty that they would let her go but why should they? She tried to destroy the earth. Maybe Margaret deserved to die.

"That's up to your planet," Kit stated harshly. "And if they think you deserve it… well, that's not our problem."

Margaret glared at her. "Quite an interesting girl you have there, Doctor. But what do you think? You take me home and I die. What do you say?"

She could feel the Doctor tense beside her but he managed to say, "As Kit said, it's not our problem."
