**This one is set after the events of season 4 Episode 10 "The Troubles With the Troubles" where Nathan accidently causes the shooting of Audrey when he shoots William. In order for this prompt to make sense...I kind of had to involve William into this.**

Chapter 1: A State Of Shock

He heard the sound of her painful yelp before he had time to reholster his weapon upon shooting William and wasn't alarmed until he saw Duke on the ground beside Audrey and that was when he saw that she had an identical wound to the one on William's lower abdomen.

'Shit...they are connected.' Nathan thought, a feeling of familiar dread opening up at the pit of his stomach as he went on the other side of Audrey to share a glance towards Duke who followed his sightline to where William was laying.

He watched as Duke walked quickly over to where William was laying bleeding out from the gunshot wound and they both shared an identical look that stated 'We're really going to do this...aren't we?' before they each pressed their hand down on the wound.

'This can't be happening...not right now...not when I finally have her...I cannot and will not let her die today...' Nathan thought, trying to keep himself calm as he tried to keep her awake even as her eyes were fluttering repeatedly between consciousness and unconsciousness.

'Come on baby...stay with me...I will not let you die...' He silently pleaded with her as he could hear the sound of an ambulance on it's way towards them.

He had been so immersed in trying to save her that he hadn't realized that Duke had already taken the liberty of calling Laverne to dispatch an ambulance to them, he hadn't realized it until hands that he couldn't feel tugging him away from where he desperately wanted to be as he tried to fight off the hands of the EMT's as they dragged him away from Audrey.

'Nooooo...I need to be with her...I have to be with her...please let me be with her!' He thought, as Duke had to be the one to hold him back from attacking one of the EMT's trying to load Audrey into the back of the truck.

"Nathan! Nathan...we have to let them do their job and be out of the way...we can meet them by at the hospital if we take Audrey's car..." Duke replied, placing a comforting hand carefully on top of his shoulder.

"Duke...I need to be with her...I have to be with her..." Nathan exclaimed, with a pleading look in his eyes as he stared at Duke.

Upon seeing the look in Nathan eyes, Duke swiftly nodded and said something to one of the EMT'S working on Audrey in the van and Nathan watched as one of them waved him over to join them. Nathan ran over to hop in the back and went over to Audrey side and grabbed her hand and held it as the doors were being shut and the ambulance began moving on it's way to the hospital.

"Hang on Audrey...just hang on...please don't die...please don't die on me...I love you so much and my world would be nothing without you in it." Nathan replied, rubbing the palm of the hand he was clutching onto as a tear that he couldn't feel slid down his cheek as he felt her begin to squeeze onto his hand.

"I love you too...Nathan..."

He kept a hold of her hand all the way to the hospital until he was pulled from her the moment that they arrived at the entrance to the trauma room where he was told to go wait in the waiting area where he found Duke sitting in a chair.

"How did you get here?" Nathan asked, not looking at him as he took a seat beside Duke and placed his head into his hands.

"I called Dwight..." Duke replied, looking as Nathan's head shot up from his hands to look at him.

"What exactly did you tell Dwight?" Nathan asked, not exactly prepared to relay the events of what happened to Dwight.

"That Audrey mysteriously got shot after William got shot...I asked him to tow Audrey's car back to The Gull so Audrey wouldn't have to worry about where it is after she recovers from this gunshot...which she WILL recover from because she is tough as nails and wouldn't leave you without a fight..." Duke stated, trying to comfort Nathan in some way.

"Did I cause this?" Nathan asked, his eyes glassy as he glanced at Duke who looked at him like he was insane.

"No...no...we couldn't have known that William wasn't bullshitting us when he said that he and Audrey were connected." Duke replied, shaking his head as they both tried to calm down.

They both sat there silent for a while as they tried to comphrend what had just happened when they were suddenly interrupted by the sound of a doctor's voice, they both looked up to glance at the doctor's face as they waited paitently for him to tell them whether or not Audrey made it through.

"How is she, doctor? Is my partner going to be okay...please...we need to know." Nathan asked, anxiety in his voice as he looked at the doctor.

"She's...she is going to be just fine...and she is asking for you...Detective Wournos...though I must warn you...Detective Parker is in a lot of pain right now." The doctor explained, guiding him to where Audrey's room was located and Nathan almost froze at the sight of her weak in the bed.

"Audrey..." Nathan breathes out a reply, walking as fast as his legs can take him until he found a nearby chair and sat near Audrey where he immediately grabbed onto her outstretched hand.

"Nathan...don't blame yourself over this...you couldn't have known that he was telling the truth about us being connected...so don't beat yourself up over this." Audrey stated, caressing her thumb across his palm as he leaned his head carefully down on her arm and began to shake as he tried to cling to her.

"I thought I lost you again...and this time it really would have been all my fault...and I don't know what I would do if I lost you to something really stupid I did while acting rash." Nathan sobbed, clinging to her as he felt the soothing touch of her other palm as it glided it's way through his hair.

"Nathan...please calm down." Audrey replied, reaching down to kiss the top of his head as she felt him slightly relax at the touch of her lips.

Nathan continued to sob and shake until he slowly began to relax as he continued to feel the soft touches of her fingertips against his hair as he clung to her and refused to let go.

"I love you so fucking much...Audrey." Nathan replied, clutching onto her for dear life.

"Nathan...look at me." Audrey replied, and after awhile of not getting a response from him, she grabs ahold of his chin and brings his face up to where they are locking eyes where she meets his red shot eyes.

"Audrey..." Nathan trailed off, beginning to cry harder as he looks into her worried eyes.

"I am okay Nathan...really I am...you are not at fault for what happened to me as we couldn't have known that he was telling the truth." Audrey replied, dragging the tips of her fingers along the side of Nathan's face.

"That still doesn't change the fact that it was my gun that caused that wound on your side..." Nathan replied, choking back a sob as he leaned into the contact of her hand pressed into the side of his face.

"Nathan...you shot William...not me...William...not me...and I know you Nathan...I know your heart. I know that you would never do a thing to harm me as you would rather cause harm on yourself then have it caused on me." Audrey replied, watching him close his eyes briefly at the feel of her pressing a kiss to his forehead.

"You could have died..." Nathan trailed off, aiming his eyes downward as she ran her hand up and down his head.

"Nathan, lay your head down on top of my chest where you can hear my heartbeat and listen to my heart beat calm you." Audrey replied, manevouring his head so that he was laying down with his ear pressed against her heart.

"Audrey..." Nathan murmured quietly, listening to sound of Audrey's heart beating as it lulled him to sleep while Audrey routinely pressed her lips to the crown of his head as his hand slipped underneath the fabric of her hospital shirt to search for bare skin.

He sighed once his hand hit the bare skin of her stomach and kept it there while hers rested upon the nape of his neck as his breath begin to even out and within moments Audrey glanced down to find Nathan asleep with his mouth slightly open.

'Hopefully he will be calmer once he wakes up...I hope to god that nobody dares to make the mistake of waking him up because gunshot wound or not I will pummel anyone who makes the stupid attempt to wake him up.' Audrey thought, as she too succumbed to sleep at the feeling and sound of Nathan's gentle breathing against her chest.

Audrey hadn't been asleep for more than a minute or two before she sensed the prescence of someone lurking in the doorway and so she slowly and sleepily opened her eyes to find Duke looking at her warily before walking into the room and near her bed. Upon seeing Duke approach her bed, Audrey brought up the hand that wasn't on Nathan to gesture Duke to speak quietly as she pointed down to a sleeping Nathan inwhich Duke nodded understandably before taking a seat near her bed.

"So that explains why he never came back to the waiting room to let me know that you were awake..." Duke whispered, softly so as though not to disturb a sleeping Nathan who was currently softly snoring against her chest.

"Sorry...I don't think he wants to part from me...he is like glued to my side right now...I am afraid that if I move now...I'll accidently wake him and getting him to go back to sleep will be harder than it was getting him to relax...so for mine and the nurses sake...don't let them pry him off of me...or else we will deal with a Nathan meltdown on our hands.." Audrey stated, chuckling as Duke smirked before settling back in the chair.

"Duly noted. You should have seen his behavior when the EMT's were attempting to pry him off of your body...I'd never seen him act that way about anyone...I mean...he thinks that it's his fault. He blames himself for what happened this morning and he even asked me if he was the cause of all this and I told him that it wasn't all his fault and that we couldn't have known that William wasn't lying to us." Duke replied, moving to cross his legs and stare at her.

"I told him the same exact thing...though I doubt he heard me through his uncontrollable sobbing." Audrey replied, smiling when she felt Nathan lean further into her touch while sleeping as she began lightly and soothingly stroking his nape with her pointer finger.

Duke smiles as he watches Nathan unconsiously react to Audrey's soothing touch and looks up to meet Audrey's imploring eyes and felt that he needed to clarify something that Nathan told him many weeks back.

"Your touch must be quite soothing to him..." Duke replied, smirking as Audrey paused what she was doing and gave him a questioning glance before returning to what she was doing.

"How do you know that he can feel my touch...and only my touch?" Audrey asked, curious as she glanced from Nathan's sleeping face to Duke's smirking one.

"Because he told me. Back when you got kidnapped by the Bolt Gun Killer and we were trying to figure out where you were being held...Nathan was barely holding his panic as well as his temper in check. He and I...we sort of got into it first before he realized that I had nothing to do with your kidnapping. We were chasing Wesley Toomey when Wesley's trouble started causing the Bronco's engine to fail...we were trying to fix the truck and we got into an argument. I revealed to him that I thought he was a lovesick child who was in love with you and everyone in town knew it...then he started saying how I didn't understand and that was when he said that you were the only one he could feel." Duke explained, watching Audrey's facial expression change as he told her the explanation.

"I figured it out that he could feel my touch after he had lost both his biological father and adoptive father...he had known for a while but was too afriad of how I might react to tell me anything. He later told me that he knew he could feel me ever since Jess had left him." Audrey stated, holding his head to her chest as he began to twitch a bit in his sleep.

"I had a feeling that he was talking about you when he was questioning fate with me...though I just didn't have enough to figure it all out." Duke replied, smiling as he had recalled his and Nathan's conversation.

"Fate?" Audrey asked, arching her eyebrow in a confused manner towards Duke.

"He had asked me about whether it was fate or not for a man like him who had an inability to feel a thing was suddenly able to feel one woman...at the time I thought he was referring to Jess...but now I know that he was referring to being able to feel you." Duke replied, smiling as she registered those words.

"Well...I don't know about fate but I do know that in some way Nathan and I are drawn to one another. He refuses to live without me and I refuse to live a life without him." Audrey replied, running her fingers through his hair as he made a humming noise in his sleep in response.

"I now understand what was going through his mind after you walked into the barn...he was in love with you but he was just too afraid to admit to anyone except for me." Duke replied, watching Nathan sleep deeply on Audrey's chest, "...how long has he been asleep?"

"Not that long...he fell asleep to the sound of my heartbeat...I had to find some way that I could be able to get him to calm down so I instructed him to lay with his ear pressed against my heart so that he could be soothed by the sound of my beating heart." Audrey stated, watching as Duke let out a chuckle as he heard that explanation.

"Sort of like how you get a newborn to stop crying moments after it escapes the mother's womb..." Duke stated, watching Audrey nod her head in amusement and agreement.

"Sort of like that..." Audrey replied, letting out a chuckle before groaning in slight pain when the feeling of Nathan squeezing his arms tighter around her caused her gunshot wound to flare up.

"Are you okay? Do you need me to go grab a doctor or nurse?" Duke asked, worry in his voice as he noticed her discomfort.

"Yeah...I'm okay. Just can you help me move him to my right side as he is putting too much pressure on my wound." Audrey groaned, letting out a wheeze as she tried to breathe through the pain.

"Sure." Duke replied, walking over to help pull his head off her chest and was in the process of prying his sleeping body off her body when Nathan suddenly started stirring.

Nathan woke up in alarm as he felt the broken contact of his hand and Audrey's skin and turned around to face the intruder but relaxed when he saw that it was Duke trying to pull him off, only to be confused as to why Duke was pulling his body off of Audrey's.

"Whaaa?" Nathan groggily asked, glancing around in slight disorientation as to where he was at before it started floating back to him just why they were all at the hospital and he immediately glanced back towards Audrey.

"Morning sleepy head...so glad you could join us this late morning..." Duke stated, watching in amusement as Nathan tried to wipe off the sleepiness in his eyes.

"Audrey...everything okay?" Nathan asked, concern immediately in his eyes as he looked over at her.

"Yeah...just please lay over on my right side please and be careful with the squeezing...I just got shot." Audrey replied, running her thumb over the back of his hand as he quickly linked their hands together.

"Sorry...I didn't hurt you...did I?" Nathan asked, worry evident in his voice and eyes.

"No...no...you didn't hurt me...you could never hurt me..." Audrey stated, giving Nathan a reassuring smile as he situated himself against her right side while also leaning his head into the contact of her hand.

"But I did hurt you..." Nathan murmered, laying his head back down on her chest as unbeknowest to him, Duke made a facial expression that could be told as being understanding.

"You can't keep beating yourself up for something that we had no way of knowing was true...if you keep blaming yourself for something that was out of your control then moving on from it will prove to be difficult. Trust me...I know from experience in dealing with Evie's death...that blaming yourself for what happened only leads to putting yourself into a pity hole of your own creation...and digging yourself out can take a long time depending on how far you have sunk yourself in pity." Duke replied, watching as Nathan directed his attention from Audrey's face to Duke's eyes.

"Duke's right, Nathan, we had no way of knowing this would happen when we confronted William so please for my sake just quit blaming yourself for what happened with me." Audrey replied, stroking her fingers through the soft strands of Nathan's dark hair as he smushed his head up into her hand.

"What did I do to make you fall in love with me?" Nathan asked, looking deeply into Audrey's eyes as she stroked her fingers along his face.

"Hmm...I don't know...I just somehow fell in love with you without realizing that I was in love with you." Audrey chuckled, framing the sides of his face in her hands.

"I love you so much, Audrey. I don't know what I would do without you by my side." Nathan replied, bringing his face down to give her a soft kiss and broke apart when they heard Duke clears his throat awkwardly.

Nathan pulled apart from Audrey to look towards Duke who attempted to look like he wasn't watching and gave Duke a slightly annoyed look as he looked back at Audrey who gave him a humorous expression, he then looked back towards Duke who gave him an awkward smile and stood up as he prepared to leave.

"Um...I am just going to go check and see if Jennifer is okay while you guys wait for the doctor to come back and tell you when they are carting Audrey off to the OR." Duke stated, awkwardly as he met their eyes and made his way out of the hospital room.

No sooner did Duke walk out of the room did the doctor enter and regard the position of the two detectives on the bed as they registered his appearance in the room, making Nathan scramble off of Audrey in an attempt to not look so scandalous in front of the doctor even though he knew that everyone was quite aware of the steamy relationship between he and Audrey.

"How are you feeling...detective Parker?" The doctor asked, glancing down at what looked to be her chart in his hands before looking at her.

"Like I could use some painkillers..." Audrey groaned, softly as a sharp flash of pain that soared through her body caused her to briefly close her eyes and take in a deep breath.

Nathan caught this and immediately grabbed ahold of her hand and squeezed as she squeezed back as they both looked towards the doctor in anticipation for what the doctor would say next.

"Well...don't worry detective Parker...you will be given plenty of painkillers as well as antibiotics to fight off any future infections once we surgically remove the bullet that lodged in your abdomen." The doctor replied, assuring her as two nurses came in to prepare Audrey for surgery as Nathan regretably stepped back from Audrey in order to give the nurses some space to work.

"What are you guys doing?" Nathan asked, concerned and panicked as they started to wheel her bed out of the room.

"We are wheeling her to the OR so that we can get started on removing that bullet...I am afriad that I am going to have to ask you to go wait in the waiting room while we work on her...don't worry...one of our nurses will let you know how her surgery went once it is done." The doctor explained, as Nathan's eyes remained on Audrey's.

"May I speak to her before you guys go on your way?" Nathan asked, his eyes still looking at Audrey's face.

"Of course." The doctor replied, watching as Nathan immediately ran towards Audrey's side to press his forehead lightly against hers as she leaned into press a soft kiss on his lips.

"Before you go...please know that I love you so much and that I will be here waiting by the time you wake up. I love you...Audrey." Nathan replied, hiding his face into her hair as he felt her hand press itself against the back of his neck in a comforting touch.

"I love you too...Nathan and I'll be back before you know it." Audrey promised, giving Nathan a smile as he pulled back to look into her eyes.

Nathan smiled back at Audrey and placed one last kiss against her lips before grabbing ahold of her hand and continued holding it along the way to the OR before reluctantly releasing her hand and watching them wheel her the rest of the way towards the operating room.

"This way...detective."

Nathan turned around from where he was staring at to bring his attention towards a nurse who was trying to direct him back towards the waiting area where he would wait until someone came to notify him about Audrey.

And this wait would prove to be long.
