Chapter 1

The music flowed through The Grey Gull as Madison sat in a corner booth taking it all in. It had been years since she had been back in Haven and though she never would have guessed that Duke would have been running the establishment there wasn't too much that had changed in the quaint town, including the return of the troubles. So far she had gone unnoticed and for that she was thankful for because if she was telling the truth she wasn't even sure why she came back in the first place.

The waitress brought over another beer that she graciously accepted. She had left Haven needing to get away from the small-town drama. She had a job and a crappy studio apartment back home in New York, in the city that never slept, but the voicemail she received from her father had her making the eight-hour trip back home.

Slipping a twenty out of her wallet and sticking it under the empty beer bottle, she slid out of the booth and made her way to the door but not before walking into someone she thought she was never going to see again or at least hoped she wouldn't.

"Whoa," Duke's hand reached out to steady the woman that had crashed into him. When his eyes met her golden honey ones the air completely left his lungs. "Maddie?"

She tucked a stray hair behind her ear as she glanced down to the hand still on her arm, "No one calls me 'Maddie' anymore, Crocker. It's Madison and I'm fairly sure I can stand on my own two feet perfectly fine."

Duke dropped his hand but couldn't take his eyes from her. He had so many questions, so many things that he wanted to say, but in this moment not a single one was coming to the front of his mind.

Madison took in the man standing in front of her. The years she had been gone had hardened him, his jaw line more defined than she could remember but there was still a softness in his eyes that gave her comfort.

"Where have you been?" Duke couldn't help himself, as happy as he was to see her again there was a hint of aggravation in his voice.

Madison shrugged her shoulders like it was no big deal, "New York City actually."

"You left without a word."

She never broke eye contact with him, "And I didn't come back to talk about it." She ran her tongue over her bottom lip, memories of the nights her and Duke spent together flashing through her mind. Slightly shaking her head to clear the thoughts, she cleared her throat. "I thought maybe Nate was here. He wasn't at his apartment or at the station and I thought I saw his truck outside but I guess he got a ride home with someone."

Duke opened and closed his mouth like a fish still not believing Maddie was back in Haven. He almost thought she was a hallucination or someone's trouble but the loud sigh that escaped her lips brought him back to the conversation. "Uh, actually, I think he is here. Probably is upstairs but unless you want to see a side of him that will give you nightmares I don't think you want to go up there right now."

Madison blinked in response, not expecting that at all. "He's here?"

"Technically," Duke's line of sight slowly rose toward the ceiling.

Madison let her gaze follow Duke's to the wooden ceiling. "This place has an upstairs?"

"I'm a landlord," he smirked, and he found himself trying to show her how he had grown up in the time she was gone.

Now it was Madison's turn to be confused, "He lives here? What happened to his place?"

Duke wasn't sure how much Maddie knew and while Nathan wasn't his favorite person he still felt a little uncomfortable talking about his private life. He thought about it finally deciding that he would answer her questions as long as they didn't get too personal. He moved her over to the side so that they weren't in the middle of the restaurant and she watched him carefully.

The delay in his answer had a hundred different horrible scenarios coming to mind, "He's okay isn't he?"

"He's kind of seeing his partner," at Madison's upturned eyebrow he continued, "Audrey, showed up in Haven a little while ago and they kind of hit it off. She's the one that lives upstairs."

Madison couldn't help but smile. She had started to worry Nathan would be alone for the rest of his life. He hadn't had much luck with women over the years and now with his trouble back she only imagined it wouldn't be any easier.

"You got a place to stay tonight?" Duke asked, never once taking his eyes off of her since she had run into him in fear that she would disappear at any given point in time.

She hadn't really thought about it, "You offering, Crocker?"

"The Cape Rouge is definitely big enough for the both of us."

It would be too easy to fall back into old habits, taking comfort in the familiar arms of Duke Crocker but she forced the thought from her mind. She was here only because her dad had called and once she took care of whatever he needed she was going to get back in her car and head straight back to New York putting Haven and everyone in it in her rearview mirror once again.

"Maddie?" Duke questioned, tilting his head to catch her line of sight still waiting for an answer.

She sighed, "It's Madison, Duke. And I really should be going."

X-X-X

The next morning Madison sat on the hood of Nathan's Bronco; a carrier filled with three coffees sitting next to her. The sun shone down on her warming her face as she stared up at the clear sky. It was moments like this that it was easy to forget everything she had run away from. A half hour later Nathan came down the stairs from the upstairs apartment at The Grey Gull with a blonde she could only assume was Audrey.

He stopped short when he saw her not bothering to hide the shock on his face. "Mads?"

She picked up the coffees next to her in way of a peace offering, "I come with caffeine." She hopped down from the hood handing one to Nathan and then one to Audrey, keeping one for herself. "Not sure how you take your coffee but I assumed Crocker has some cream and sugar if you need it and if he locks up the place I think I still have my lock pick in my glove box."

"Thanks, I think," Audrey cautiously accepted the cup and glanced between the two. "And you are?"

"Wow," Madison teased putting her hand on her chest, "Just because I'm not around doesn't mean I don't exist. Nate, you didn't tell your girlfriend you had a sister?"

"She's not my girlfriend," Nathan stated at the same time Audrey said, "We're not together."

Madison rolled her eyes, taking a sip of her coffee, "Mhm." She extended her hand, "Madison Wuornos."

"Audrey Parker," she shook her hand taking in Madison's choice of wardrobe. She was dressed in ripped black jeans, converse sneakers, and a white tank top under a plaid, button up flannel shirt that was easily two sizes too big. Madison's mahogany auburn locks sat on top of her head in a messy bun with a few tendrils of hair framing her face. If it weren't for the smile Audrey would have never been able to tell that she was related to either of the Wuornos.

"What are you doing here?" Nathan asked, watching her carefully because the last time he had seen his sister she was driving away from Haven with the promise that she would never be back to the small town. If he were being honest, admittedly he couldn't even remember the last time he had checked in with her. "Is everything okay?"

Madison shrugged, "You tell me. I get this voicemail from dad telling me I need to come home as soon as humanly possible. I thought you were dying or something." She tilted her head to the side and trailed her eyes from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet. "But you look perfectly fine to me. Any idea what this is all about?"

Audrey and Nathan shared a look as if they were having a silent conversation between the two of them. Nathan could handle the troubles being back because he knew that no matter what his sister was eight hours away and would be safe from whatever the town had to throw at them but now here she was standing in front of him.

"Seriously, Nate," she stepped closer and put a hand on his arm though she knew he couldn't feel it; old habits died hard. "What is going on? I'm telling you right now if this was just some stupid ploy for him to get me to come back I'm going to get right back in my car and go home."

Nathan shared another look with Audrey, not wanting to be the one to break the news to his sister but she was already in town so it wasn't like he would be able to hide it from her for very long. "The troubles are back."

"No shit. It's why your coffee had extra milk."

Her calm response did little to settle his nerves, "You know?"

"I still keep in contact with Leah." Madison knew she should feel guilty about talking to one of her best friends more than a member of her family but she wasn't going to lie to him either. "I'm sorry you have to go through this again, Nate."

"It's not as bad as some have it." They stood in awkward silence as Nathan tried to wrap his head around the idea that not only was his sister standing in front of him but that she knew the troubles were back. "Have you seen Duke yet?"

Madison thought back to the night before and how badly she wanted to end up back on the Cape Rouge with him. "Yeah, actually I have. He seems…like Crocker."

Nathan made a face and Madison couldn't believe that some things never really did change. She figured that after all this time things would have gotten better between the two but she was wrong. "As happy as I am to see you, I have to admit, it's not the best time for you to be back in town."

She rolled her eyes, taking a sip of her coffee before replying, "Same old annoyingly protective, Nate. I didn't come for some vacation I came because dad asked me to. It sounded urgent. Trust me, I much rather be home on my couch channel surfing than back in this hell hole but here I am. Gracing you with my presence."

"How much do you know about the troubles?" Audrey questioned, figuring that Nathan and Madison's little reunion was over and she was eager to get to know the youngest Wuornos.

Madison's eyes glazed over for a moment with the same horrible memories that almost made her stay back in New York City no matter what her dad needed. "More than I'd like to." She reached up and pulled the collar of her shirt down far enough for Audrey to see the old, angry scar across her collarbone. Nathan took a sip of his coffee, looking anywhere but at his sister. Madison covered it back up the best she could and cleared her throat. "Just because I haven't been here Haven never changes and being back here is a reminder of that."

"I'm sorry," Audrey apologized, wanting to know more about what happened, what Madison knew, and why she had come back now but she bit her tongue for the time being.

"Everyone always is," Madison mumbled, remembering all the conversations and questions she had no answers to after the accident. "Well, I'm sure you two will have a day full of crazy. I'll just get out of your hair. Think I'm going to go take a drive around town."

"It's good to see you, Mads," Nathan commented as she walked towards her car. "If I see the chief I'll let him know you are here."

She waved over her shoulder as she got into her car, music blaring from the tinny speakers as soon as the car rumbled to life. Madison peeled out of the parking lot leaving Nathan and Audrey in a cloud of dust.

"So, you have a sister," Audrey started, leaving it open for Nathan to hopefully fill in the blanks.

Nathan took another sip of his coffee and sighed, "I do."

Audrey thought her and Nathan had gotten pretty close but couldn't help but wonder why he never talked about her or even mentioned that he had a sibling. "Is she…troubled?"

Nathan shook his head, leaning against the hood of the Bronco, "No." He didn't want to relive the day he got the call Madison had gotten into the accident but he could only imagine how she was feeling now that she was back. "Before Mads left she was really close with a couple of kids in the neighborhood; Leah, her best friend for as long as I could remember, and Dylan, Leah's now husband, as well as Duke and Jason, a local prankster. The five of them were inseparable and always causing some kind of mischief. Mads and the chief got in a huge argument one night, I mean slamming doors and broken glass, and she called Jason to come get her. They were out on Route 27 when a freak storm rolled through with baseball sized hail and trees down all over the place."

He paused and Audrey came to stand next to him. "It wasn't just some storm, was it? Some one's trouble caused the accident."

"Jason was killed on impact," Nathan continued, swallowing down the memories of his sister's screams as they tried to get her out of the car. "Mads was stuck for three hours before we could get her out. If she wasn't wearing her seatbelt…"

"She left Haven because she blames your dad for the accident," Audrey assumed from the story and was surprised when Nathan corrected her.

"No, she blames herself."
