Lassiter hung up immediately, finally a sense of triumph.
He stared smugly at Yang before turning to his partner, "I've got a location"
Juliet blinked surprised.
Yang frowned.
"I guess you won't be going anywhere" Lassiter laughed smugly before walking away.
Juliet began walking to but froze as Yang whispered, "wait"
Juliet turned to face her, she looked oddly vulnerable all of a sudden.
"There is a secret passage way into the house via the basement if you move the bookcase"
Juliet pursed her lips, trying to decide if she was lying. "Why tell me this?"
"I want my photo detective...please"
Juliet sighed, this woman was crazy.
Without answering she quickly caught up with her partner. They had a hostage to rescue.
Xxx
The two detectives arrived on the scene very shortly after. The back up had yet to arrive and Lassiter parked directly opposite the house so they had a good view of the front entrance. The house backed onto another house with brick walls around the small garden so Lassiter could tell that there was no escape out the back.
He passed his phone to Juliet who studied the picture of the house from the estate agents.
"There seems to be a small shed in the back" she stated. "I'll check it out"
"Be careful" Lassiter told her, "I'll see how far back up is"
She nodded at him and while he guarded the entrance, she made her way past the side of the house into the garden.
Instantly she could tell there was no way out this way, the garden was surrounded by thick brick walls much like the picture had suggested on Lassiter's phone. She approached the shed with caution, it had definitely seen better days but she could see no evidence of explosives or weapons of any kind. Just a few bags of fertiliser and an old lawn mower that she suspected wouldn't work when plugged in. The weeds were fairly overgrown and the paint on the back of the house had seen better days, it was peeling off in various places.
She moved stealthily round to the other side of the house and her eyes narrowed in on the wooden door that had come off it's hinges. She stepped closer for a better look and realised she was looking into a basement. Or perhaps it was the back entrance to the garage? There was no way to tell. She was about to head back to her partner when she thought she heard something. She crept so she was standing right next to the broken door and slid through the gap.
She found herself stood next to an old car, just be the state of it she knew it wouldn't run. She could see an old work bench in the corner and the other side had a bench full of books and an old bookcase. Her eyes narrowed in on it, wondering if Yang's words were true or wether it was part of a trap. She could hear police sirens now and nines that back up was imminent. She turned her back ready to leave when something she heard stopped her in her tracks.
Allison.
A muffled scream echoed through.
A civilian was in a danger and Juliet was not going to waste the chance of saving her. Back up would no doubt follow her in anyway as Lassiter would know she never returned.
She walked forward slowly towards the bookcase, her eyes staring at it like it held all the answers and with great apprehension, she pushed the bookcase to the side revealing an open door way.
She sighed in relief and tried not to cough as the passage released a fair bit of dust, what it didn't release was a loud sound so hopefully she would make it inside undetected.
It was then she wished she had brought her torch but she grabbed her phone and used the flashlight as a touch to navigate the passage. It was only moments before she found herself inside the house. She was surrounded by clothing hooks you would hang your coats up with and there was an umbrella stand in the corner. She closed her eyes and listened. Allison was definitely here, she heard the scream once more. It sounded like it was close, perhaps in the next room over.
She swapped her phone for her gun and ran to the next room, she raised her gun to shoot but span around in fright as she realised she was alone. Her eyes suddenly glued themselves to the record player in the corner of the room which was spinning and she realised with a sickening sense of dread that she most likely hadn't heard Allison scream.
The muffled scream cried out again and Juliet moved and took the needle of the record player, effectively cutting off the sound. She didn't notice the other figure in the room until it was too late. She looked up to see a figure towering over her and before she could even raise her gun or scream, her vision faded to black and her head started throbbing.
Juliet didn't know how long she had been out, her head ached and she came back to awareness suddenly. Like all of her synapses had suddenly woken up and she remembered exactly what had happened. Her eyes snapped awake and she found herself staring at an elderly balding man. She had been gagged and she heard a struggled moan try and get her attention. She tried to move towards the sound but her arms and legs were bound to the chair she was sitting on, her gun was uncomfortably absent. Instead she attempted to turn her head and she could make out Allison's scared face sat in the chair next to hers, she tried to comfort her with her eyes but she was undeniably scared too.
She attempted to scream in anger but the gag in her mouth effectively muffled most of the sound.
The elderly man laughed. "Why so shocked Detective?"
Juliet could only glare at the man she presumed to be Yin. This was the man that had drugged her and tied her to a chair about to fall off the clock tower. This was the man that had tried to kill her and had managed to kill Shawn instead. She tried to take comfort in knowing that the police were already here.
Juliet could tell that her eyes had already revealed as much.
Yin glanced at the window bored, it was so dirty you couldn't see out of it but the message was still easily read.
"Yes...I do hope they like what I've done with the front door" he remarked dryly.
Juliet squinted confused.
"Just some minor explosives" he remarked off handedly.
Juliet tried to calm herself, Allison was doing enough screaming and panicking for the both of them.
Yin glared at her and the screaming stopped as abruptly as it had began. Yin sighed slightly and sat down behind his desk, with the two woman bound and gagged in front of him. For a moment, he organised the papers in front of him. He used his letter opener to open an envelope before clearing a small space of blank desk. He then opened his draw and pulled out vial full of clear liquid and a single syringe.
"I've been told" Yin began, "That this is one of the deadliest poisons in the world"
He grinned at them and made a show of filling up the syringe from the vial, both Juliet and Allison were shaking and attempting to loosen the restraints.
"Not because it kills you quickly...oh no. The opposite" he smiled holding up the full syringe.
He walked round the table and Juliet couldn't take her eyes off of the syringe.
"Now...the biggest question is...who first?"
"How about me?" The door swung open.
Juliet could have sworn she felt her heart skip a beat.
It was Shawn.
He didn't look well, not at all. He was wearing the same outfit she had seen him in last but it was covered in dirt and black smudges that looked like grease. His hair was...too dark. There was a huge gash at the top of his forehead receding into his hairline, or she assumed as the amount of blood dipping from his wound was staggering. But he looked so much better than when she had last seen him, laying cold on the ground. But not that much better, he looked like a walking corpse.
Her eyes filled with tears and she screamed through the gag.
With all the attention on him, Shawn was the only one to see Yin's expression. Yin's controlled features looked momentarily shocked, for a second he wasn't in control but he quickly masked his expression into a vague indifference.
"So keen to die...again" Yin smirked.
Shawn growled in anger and stumbled over to Yin's desk. Yin stood to the side of it, close to Juliet as leverage.
Juliet's heart was now beating faster than she had thought possible. Shawn was alive...but possibly not for much longer. Where the hell was her partner?
Shawn' eyes rolled backwards slightly and it looked like he was going to pass out, he put his hand on the desk to steady himself.
Suddenly an explosion sounded temporarily causing the distraction Shawn so desperately needed. His hand was already resting on the letter opener from when he stumbled and in a fraction of second he threw the small sword.
Yin didn't even have time to react as he found the letter opener lodged in his chest piercing his heart. He was dead in seconds.
Yin's grip shattered, the syringe falling harmlessly to the fall and he slumped over. Shawn blinked in shock. He could barely believe it was over, he couldn't believe he had killed him. Inside, he felt a bit sick. It was one thing to take another's life, it was another to kill your own... he almost gagged, banishing the thought from his mind. That man deserved to die, an innocent civilian would have been killed and Juliet... still bound and gagged.
Shawn bent down and removed the letter opener from Yin's chest, he pushed down further first. He had to make sure he was really dead, that his aim had been accurate. Satisfied he wiped the blade on his shirt and stumbled over to Juliet, he made sure his hand was visibly shaking as he raised the blade to cut through the rope of one of her hands. The rope snapped and she immediately started to free herself, removing the gag first.
"Jules..." Shawn whispered before falling over and collapsing on the ground and closing his eyes.
