A/N I do not own psych. i get sick of typing that sometimes. Anyway, hope you guys enjoy the next chapter
It was a short journey back to Henry's house. Henry was quick to set up Psycho and Gus arrived shortly after with popcorn.
Shawn seemed a little on edge, his mobile within arms reach. Something that didn't go unnoticed by his father, wisely he chose not to say anything.
Shawn burst out laughing when Gus jumped a mile at the shower scene. Gus was always the type to scare easily, even if he knew it was coming. This action made Henry relax a little but he couldn't stop thinking that Shawn was hiding something from him and that made him anxious.
Gus fell asleep on the sofa and Shawn was quick to pull out a blanket and lay it over him.
It was then his phone beeped and the message he had received caused his breath to catch in his throat.
"Dad, can I borrow your truck?"
Henry's face hardened, unsure of what was going on but where ever Shawn was going. There was no way her was going alone.
"I'll drive" he stated, grabbing his keys and heading out. Not giving Shawn a chance to say no.
"No, stay with Gus" Shawn shouted following him.
"Henry" Shawn stated coldly, "give me the keys"
Henry dismissed his son's tone. "You're not going alone"
Shawn sighed, "please, stay with Gus. I won't be alone"
Henry paused.
"Dad please"
Henry chucked him the keys reluctantly.
"I swear to God if you aren't back in an hour I'll call the cops"
Shawn smiled in relief, "thanks dad"
Henry watched as his son drove away, he better be back in an hour. Henry would certainly be true to his word and he would be demanding an explanation when he got back.
Shawn drove quickly, knowing he wasn't too far from his destination. He hated lying to the people he cared about, working behind their backs but sometimes it was the only way to keep them safe. It was a working theory but Shawn didn't believe that Mary was Mr Yin. He was involved somehow but that was why he had set up an alert on his phone for 736 Port Avenue Industrial Lane. If anyone got near it would send him a text. There was no time or date on the note he had seen in Mary's apartment but he hadn't realised it would be so soon.
He pulled up outside the building and spotted the door that had been forced open. Taking a deep breath, he pulled the gun he had retrieved from Psych, hoping he wouldn't have to use it, much preferring to disarm assailants with hand to held combat.
Upon entering the room he was immediately confused, the room was full of computer monitors and Shawn spotted Mary immediately, climbing the stairs. Shawn immediate had a sense of deja vu. He had literally just watched this. He was playing Martin Balsam in psycho. He was about to die.
Shawn quickly looked around the room and saw the light from the hidden door and kicked it open, rushing towards the stairs but not in time to save Mary from his fate.
"Mary" Shawn rushed towards him, blood was spilling from the stab wound and there was nothing he could do.
"Shawn" Mary coughed, "I'm sorry"
"Shh it's ok"
"Sorry I...didn't...trust you" he gasped. "Yang said..."
"It's ok Mary" Shawn whispered interrupting him, "all is forgiven"
With those words Mary stilled and his chest ceased the rise and fall motions it was accustomed to.
Shawn was furious and he looked up to see the figure of a man standing in the shadows. He couldn't see him clearly but it didn't stop him from standing up and yelling,
"BASTARD"
"No" the man replied, "you are"
The man took off running and Shawn followed immediately. It was evident the man knew the area well as Shawn lost him pretty quickly, the darkness didn't help either. Shawn gave up chase and headed back to Mary's body. Glancing at his watch he knew he had to set off soon before his dad panicked.
He took out his phone and quickly dialled the CIA, clean up crew. They would be able to fix this mess. Shawn stared down at Mary's body, annoyed. If only Mary had told him that he had been contacted, it was obvious in hindsight that the notes were recreations and not first drafts. He hadn't told him because he didn't trust him. He wondered what Yang had been saying, though there was no way he would be asking her any time soon. Shawn took one last look at Mary before making his way back to the truck, leaving the scene. He knew the CIA would only be minutes away, they were on call for this kind of thing all the time and as Shawn started the engine, he saw the familiar uniform arrive at the building.
Shawn rolled down the window to speak to the gentlemen that had arrived.
"Look after him" he stated and the man nodded.
"I know the drill" was the reply.
There was nothing else to say.
When Shawn arrived back at his fathers house, there was no chance to hide the state he was in. His shirt was covered in blood from attempting to apply pressure on the wound.
"You ok" Henry blurted, immediately trying to assess for injuries.
Shawn didn't respond verbally, just nodded.
"Shawn...talk to me" Henry pleaded.
"Henry...You know I can't talk about it. Just let me clean myself up"
Henry had no response and waited in the kitchen, the kettle boiling to make them both a cup of tea.
Shawn returned a few moments later, chucking the bloodied shirt on the fireplace and watched it disintegrate before he joined his father in the kitchen.
Shawn could tell Henry was upset from his expression.
"I'm sorry" Shawn apologised. Henry always had hated it when Shawn left for 'work'.
"I just forget sometimes" Henry muttered. "I forget that no matter what you're still..."
Shawn smiled, "I'm glad you do" he admitted, "it would be nice to be...normal"
Henry gripped his mug tightly.
"It's your choice" Henry reminded him, "It's your life...you could just stick with Shawn Spencer"
Shawn looked upset, "I can't " Shawn whispered.
Henry looked upset at the confession.
"I heard what you said to Gus at Mary's apartment" Henry whispered, almost afraid at bringing up this line of questioning.
Shawn narrowed his eyes and waited for him to continue.
"Why are you doing this... is it family?"
Shawn was taken aback by his words, unsure of how to answer.
"There's not much I wouldn't do for the people I care about" Shawn answered carefully. "I really appreciate everything you did for me growing up and everything you continue to do for me now"
Henry looked close to tears.
"I'd keep your secrets to the grave" Henry told him passionately, the truth shining in his eyes. "Let me in... I can help"
" I'm not sure you'd even like me if I told you everything" Shawn admitted, "I do trust you Henry but I value your life and safety more"
Henry blinked back a tear.
"I won't tell anyone what happened tonight" Henry promised.
Shawn nodded thankful.
"I'm gonna crash, that's enough heart to heart for tonight. I'm exhausted" Henry admitted.
Shawn laughed, "yeah me too"
Henry's eyes sparkled at the carefree nature his son was displaying once more. He didn't know how he did it, the likely hood was that his son had killed someone tonight. That the phone call he had received earlier in the day was more likely instructions of a target that Shawn had then lied about. But Henry trusted Shawn, he was a good person and he would protect him no matter what.
Gus was non the wiser the next morning. Henry woke naturally around 6am and both Shawn and Gus slept until around 7:30.
They congregated in the kitchen
"Sorry for having a go at you last night" Henry apologised.
Shawn laughed, "that's a first"
Henry grumbled.
Shawn decided to put him out of his misery, "it's ok. I know you want the best for me"
"Huh" Gus asked confused, "what happened last night?"
"He overheard us talking in Mary's apartment" Shawn told him.
Gus almost dropped his fork, he couldn't believe Shawn was bringing up this topic after how uncomfortable it made him last time.
Neither Gus or Henry could find any words.
"Speaking of which... We never went to that apartment" Shawn insisted.
Henry immediately nodded, trusting his son's judgement.
"What why? What about the clue?"
Shawn sighed, "please just trust me Gus. Tell no one we were there and tell no one of the note"
"I don't understand"
"I know you don't buddy and I'm sorry I dragged you into this but this is important. Ya gotta promise me buddy. You'll say nothing"
Gus could tell that for once his best friend was being dead serious.
"Fine" he mumbled, annoyed.
"Don't be like that" Shawn argued, "it's not fair"
"It's not fair?" Gus repeated astonished. "You're withholding vital information into the Yin case and asking me to keep it from the police.
Shawn turned to his best friend angry.
"You ask me to let you in. You ask me to trust you" Shawn was seething, "but the moment I do... you don't trust me"
Gus blinked shocked.
"Do you not think I have a good reason for asking for your silence?"Shawn whispered almost brokenly.
"Shawn..." Gus whispered.
"I should never have let you come with me in the first place" Shawn said out loud, reprimanding himself.
"No" Gus but in, "I'm sorry. You can trust me"
Shawn looked at him to see if he was telling him the truth.
"I won't say a word about going to his apartment, I swear" Gus pleaded.
Shawn glanced at his dad who simply used his hand to zip his mouth shut.
"Thank you" Shawn said with relief.
Gus knew he had fucked up. Shawn had put trust in him and Gus hadn't reciprocated. He should have known not to question his best friend. There was no doubt that Shawn knew more than he was telling. But that was always the case, Shawn had many secrets that Gus wasn't privy to.
Gus jumped when the phone rang and Shawn answered, recognising the number as the station.
"Spencer here" he greeted. He listened for a moment before nodding, "on our way"
Henry and Gus watched him.
"That was the Chief, Mr Yin just sent something to the station"
A/N I do hate it when Shawn and Gus fight.
Just wanted to clarify something about Henry's character. It might seem like he's a bit needy but we all know he loves his son. Shawn may not be Henry's biological son but Henry acted like a parent in every way that mattered and Shawn took a hard time adjusting to the man who was suddenly his new father.
