Gus wasn't answering. Juliet growled in frustration.
Her tears had dried on her face and just as she was about to run out to her car to go to the scene of the crime and track Shawn down from there an ambulance came speeding into the parking lot.
Moving to the side of the emergency room while medical personnel rushed past her to the ambulance, she felt relief flood her system, this had to be Shawn's ambulance.
Once the door was clear, she moved outside to get a closer look as they quickly and professionally removed the gurney from the back of the ambulance and made their way inside.
One man started shouting medical information, but in all the rush Juliet only caught a few phrases: Trauma to the lung. Extensive blood loss. Cardiac arrest. Just got him back.
As Juliet struggled to wrap her mind around what had happened, they rushed past her in a blur. She tried to follow, catching only brief glimpse of Shawn's face and the amount of blood on the EMT's hands.
Shawn's heart had stopped and the EMT had just gotten it to start beating again? It had been a good 15 minutes since she had arrived. How long could a person survive without their heart beating?
As her mind was consumed with these thoughts, she found herself standing next to Gus. Taking in his appearance, her guilt multiplied ten-fold.
She had missed Shawn's wound. She had left him standing there, her last words to him had been cold, distanced, and now here she was standing beside his best friend,
while the idiot she still loved despite all the anger was fighting for his life.
"Gus. Gus!" She called, finally turning her attention to him, noticing how pale he was as he took shallow breaths and his hands shook.
"You need to sit down and breathe, Gus." She said, pushing her fear aside as she focused on someone she could help, something she could control.
"T-there was so much blood and – and he c-couldn't b-breathe. I've n-never seen Sh-shawn so st-still."
Juliet's heart was pounding. Forcing herself to breathe, she laid her hand on Gus's knee, "Shawn's tough, he'll be ok. He has to be." Gus nodded, closing his eyes as he tried to convince himself she was right.
It had been three hours, Henry and Lassiter had shown up thirty minutes after they had taken Shawn back to surgery.
All of them were anxiously waiting on any kind of update. Vick had called from the precinct to check on Shawn's status and Lassiter had given her all the information they had before returning to his seat next to O'Hara.
Juliet was taking the time to sort through her emotions. Her anger with Shawn, herself, and the situation primarily consuming her thoughts. He had lied to her, about who he was. That wasn't something she could just forget. But losing him was not something she was ready for.
Frustrated, she abruptly stood up from her seat and began pacing. She wasn't ready to forgive him. She needed time to process what she was feeling, but she also couldn't abandon him. He had her heart and, dadgum it, she wanted him to have it, but she needed to feel like everything she'd given him hadn't been swindled in some game he played because he could.
She needed to feel that what they had was real. Deep down she knew it was, but the pain of being lied to cheapened everything she had trusted.
Resolving herself to be where Shawn needed her, she also resolved herself to the hard conversations she would have to have with him when he was ok, and he would be ok.
