Missed some time due to Thanksgiving, but trying to make it up. Work has started demanding more time from me, learning new tech, only to be told 'maybe we won't use it after all.' Stupid depression is fun to, but at least things seem to be clearing up. Hope you're all doing well

Chapter – 7

Sitting at a small patio set in a swim trunks and a light top, Shinji did his best not to listen to the sounds coming from the pool. Not typically something he'd go to, not being able to swim, Shinji was reluctant to listen to Misato's demand. That woman never made demands unless it was necessary, and that typically resulted in added stress for the boy's life. But Shinji just couldn't tell the woman no, he just couldn't. Emotions were evil little things, before he'd always answer yes to avoid pain from others, now with Misato (and Kagari if she ever actually asked for something) it was to please her. So here he sat, listening to Ayanami swimming while trying to focus on his physics homework.

Focus was hard though, very hard, he was a teenager and in a newly minted relationship! Two-weeks was two weeks and they held hands a few times and they kissed once more, a big distraction for the emotional stunted boy. "Feel bad she skipped out on the trip, but with all this craziness with…" Shinji stopped talking. He heard the sounds of splashing stop and looked over and saw Rei's eyes over the lip of the pool. Her hands clasped the edge, her eyes just over the lip, and she was staring at him, listening to him. Yeah, not supposed to talk openly about Tower witch stuff, around Ayanami. Actually Ayaka was adamant he avoid Ayanami at all costs, for reasons she wouldn't say. So mentioning Medusa and her daughters were in an empty apartment next to his, well that was a no-no.

"H-how is the water, Ayanami-san. I didn't know you were an avid swimmer. I can't swim so you…you have the pool to yourself, must be nice?" Shinji lamely tried to fill the air. Why was she watching him? The fact that it started as he was about to slip couldn't just be coincidence could it? Where was Asuka to fill the sound buffer and keep Shinji from acting stupid?

Not saying anything, she appeared much like the classic mermaid of lore. Not the beautiful sirens that coaxed men to crash ships or be romanced by wayward sailors, no this was a dangerous creature that wanted to grab him and pull him into the inky blackness. "It is peaceful, full of silence. I could teach you if you wanted. Hold you close so you don't slip. Something it appears you're getting used to," Rei's voice was louder thanks to the moisture in the air. The come-hither nature of her voice had to be Shinji just imaging it. Nobody knew that Ayaka and Shinji were dating save Touji, nobody would believe it.

Waving off the request, Shinji scratched his cheek, "No that is fine. M-maybe some other time. No towel and hate to get started and have Mis-Misato-san come for us." Please stop looking, please go back to swimming and ignoring the world. Ever since that odd illusion Ayanami cast on him, Shinji had been a bit more leery of her. Things didn't add up, and Kagari was all about removing those types of interactions from Shinji's life. They kept looking at one another a little longer, those red orbs spinning and twirling, inviting Shinji, calling to him. Feeling himself start to slip off the chair, standing up, it all ended when the door to the pool opened with a loud crash sending Shinji falling back to his chair.

"Hey-hey Shinji! Look at how studious you are. Studying when you could be playing like Wonder Girl here," Asuka waved as she swayed over to Shinji's little bastion of peace. Clad in a stupidly revealing red and white stripped bikini, Asuka was in full swagger mode as she approached Shinji. Plopping down in a very unladylike position, Asuka grabbed Shinji's book while he was distracted by her approach. "With that amazon always around you, figured she'd be teaching you this stuff. Or is she all beauty and no brain?" Asuka flipped through the book and actually started reading it.

A small anger was born at the slight against his paramour, and Shinji found it easier to look away from the tantalizing flesh on display. "I was just distracted over last two weeks. Kagari-san did her best to teach me this, just couldn't f-focus well. We-we started d-dating, so my mind isn't really on physics stuff so…don't blame her," he was a bit more forceful than usual, but felt Kagari deserved to be treated for her brain more than her body.

Pulling the book to her chest, actually pressing it against herself, Asuka's eyes went wide and her jaw dropped in disbelief. Pointing at Shinji with her free hand, "You and her are actually…YOU scrawny Shinji is with that…" Tossing the book at him, it was still warm he felt, she started laughing hard. Collapsing onto the table, one arm supporting her as her rich gales of laughter filled the pool with its mocking disbelief. With actual tears in her eyes, "You can't be serious! Let me guess, YOU think you're dating because she sits next to you and doesn't treat you bad? Hell why don't you claim to be dating Ayanami as well since she's emotionless as Kagari is wouldn't refute it!"

Clenching his fists, Shinji debating countering Asuka's harsh denial, but what would the point be? If Asuka didn't accept it, did that matter? No, who cared if others didn't know/understand how Ayaka and Shinji cared for one another. Putting the book back down, Shinji took a deep breath, "Laugh if you want, it doesn't matter to me if you believe me or not." He was going to have to get used to this reaction, nobody was going to accept the fact Ayaka would settle for him.

"True, it doesn't matter if she believes us," Ayaka said simply enough as she appeared behind Shinji, hand on his shoulder. Ok, she was pissed Shinji realized based on the heat she was radiating. Since Asuka didn't know about the witching world, it did mean Ayaka wasn't supposed to use her abilities around her. Didn't mean she didn't have accidents from time to time, but Shinji covered the rare fire with some lame excuse. Picking up the book that had fallen back down, "You are still having issues with this theory? Heat makes things expand, shall I demonstrate?" A finger pointed at Asuka and a small little flame elemental formed and glared balefully at Asuka.

The table moved when Asuka actually shoved it as both hands smashed into it, "You're serious? You two are dating?" Pushing away from the patio table, it grinding against the tiles and sent the few plastic cups tipping over thankfully they were empty. Taking a few steps away from them, a confused expression that Shinji couldn't fully understand, "Well fine, you do whatever. Just don't go sucking face in front of Kasumi. And did YOU pick out that suit for her? Pervert." And with a huff Asuka made a show of heading to the pool where she had a set of diving gear waiting…she moved like a pendulum.

As Ayaka quickly moved to block Shinji's view of the German minx, Shinji quickly grabbed her hand and just marveled at it. Soft and warm despite how strong she was and the heat she was capable of, Shinji loved holding her hand. "Sorry, I got upset at her. She mocked you for me failing that test last week, so I confessed I was distracted because we started dating and…sorry," Shinji felt he broke some rule. They hadn't spoken of their relationship with anybody openly about it at school. With the whole fan-club, her being the school's princess, it was wrong of him to claim so much of her time. Yet he did, she accepted it, but he still felt he was supposed to keep it a secret.

"She is nothing to warrant attention. Now let's review, if you cannot pass the next test we might not be in the same class next year," Kagari dismissed Shinji's concerns effortlessly. Scooting her chair next to his, spinning the book so they could both see it, her hair spilled over Shinji's shoulder.

Taking a moment to actually look at Ayaka, she had appeared behind him so he hadn't had a chance to take in the full glory of Ayaka's suit. A blue one-piece suit that barely contained her form. "D-did you buy that suit? It looks very…fetching," Shinji squirmed in his seat to hide his little issue with the view.

"This is from school, my swimsuits were in the house during the fight, like my other clothing," Ayaka just had to rub her shoulder against Shinji's arm as she spoke. Ok, this was on purpose, she was doing it fully knowing what she was doing. Something Shinji was learning rather quickly since they 'officially' started dating. Ayaka was very much a touchy-feely type, but she never said it. Just actions and subtle manipulation of a teenage boys hormones…guess girls had those feelings too just Shinji wasn't bold enough yet to push forward.

Letting Ayaka teach him the physics theories for about ten minutes, Shinji eventually had enough. "I think I have this for now. H-how about you let me try this on my own for a bit…and you can test me after? You've the suit, why not s-swim?" Shinji felt he could use some cold water right now. Since the first kiss on the broom, Shinji was more aware of Ayaka's scent, form, mannerisms, everything. And all of it was just so alluring.

Spotting Asuka watching them, she had gotten out of the pool and was fiddling with the diving gear, Ayaka stood up. Blocking line of sight again, a few flame elementals were born and had a giddy expression as they danced about. "Do not watch her, she is only teasing," said the biggest tease of them all. But she did lean in quickly and gave his cheek a peck before leaving Shinji there rubbing his cheek. When she walked past Asuka however, Kagari flung the girl into the water sending the girl actually skipping across the surface. Asuka sputtered out a bunch of angry insults about Ayaka being an ogre and brute, but otherwise fine.

Yup, most people didn't notice it, but Shinji did see Ayaka was every bit the teenager that the rest of them were. Sure she didn't show a lot of facial expressions and her tone was lacking, her actions were there for those willing to look. That was something they shared, Shinji did keep his true emotions as close to the chest as possible. Throwing Asuka because Ayaka didn't like how flirty Asuka acted, wanting to burn Touji for being brutish with his well-meaning actions, or those oh so subtle shoulder touches just now proved (to Shinji at least) that Ayaka was very much like him.

"Just take it one day at a time, one day at a time," Shinji willed his little issue to subside. But he did see Ayanami back at the pool edge again watching him, that was until a pool floating aid bounced off her head. Nope, nobody was omitted from Ayaka's wrath. The trio of girls swam, Asuka diving in her gear, for about an hour. A race between Ayaka and Asuka was attempted but Asuka gave up nearly instantly when Kagari just trounced her. Asuka then tried to entice Shinji a few times into coming over to the edge of the pool, Kagari hurled the offending girl into the deep end. All during the frolicking, Shinji did his best to study, he was mostly successful.

Clapping her hands as she walked into the room, Misato accompanied with Ritsuko called out, "Alright kids get over here, I'll try to make this quick. Kagari-kun how did you get…Shinji-kun did you let her in?" Misato had a very confused look on her face, something Shinji noticed she had more often, and she was asking more questions regarding things of the magical variety that Ayaka claimed was 'taken care of'.

Since he was dry and closer to them, Shinji was the first to get the waiting adults and Misato took liberties with that, another thing she'd been doing more of. Holding her report with one hand, she draped her arm possessively over Shinji's shoulder and gently messaged it. "You doing alright? Sorry you couldn't go on that trip, kid, wish you could, but need you pilots on base. And sorry about the whole failed test, but what guardian would I be if I didn't bust ya on tests right?" Misato whispered as the trio of girls approached, Ayaka of course was already dried.

When Ayaka stood right in front of Misato, an unspoken challenge was made between the two. In his mind Shinji saw bolts of energy going between the two. Ayaka did eventually just grab Shinji and pull him away from the commanding officer but didn't hold him, just put him on her side only for Asuka to flank him to increase the challenge.

"I'll keep this brief," Misato started with a small sneer at losing out on her mother/son time. "I'll leave the technical details to Ritsuko here, so I'll go into the high details. We found an angel chrysalis inside a volcano, where I've been last few days. Couldn't tell you Shinji-kun as it was a secret until we knew. Now we want to lower an Evangelion into the volcano to try and capture it. Another Unit will be on site in case things go wrong or aid is needed, and one will remain here. Now…"

Jumping up and down, holding her hand up in the air, Asuka was slapping Shinji with her hair as she flailed about. "Pick-me pick-me! I volunteer to be lowered! I'd be like diving! And you owe me for making me skip that trip!" Asuka's energy was cloying and borderline scary. Why would anybody want to be put into harms way, even for a good cause?

Shinji closed his eyes and readied himself for the truth of the matter, it was going to be him, it was always him. Ayaka took his hand and gave it a squeeze and that tension that was building evaporated, she'd be there. How she got into the base, well he knew HOW it happened, but he wasn't going to say anything, Misato didn't seem to care really.

"Asuka, since Unit-02 has the necessary workings for the Type-D equipment, you'll be on point, Shinji will be support, and Ayanami will remain on base in case of another Angel attack while we're off site," Misato said to various emotional reactions to the pilots. Handing the papers over to Ritsuko, "I'll leave Ritsuko to tell you the rest Asuka, Shinji-kun and Kagari-kun a moment?" Misato gestured for the two to join her away from the rest.

Preempting what Shinji thought was going to be the issue, Shinji sputtered out, "I badged her into the base, Misato-san. With the pool and all, thought we could have some fun and she could help me get my test score better and…" He would have kept babbling had Misato not gave his forehead a solid flick with her finger primed by her thumb.

"I don't care about that, but you two need to be careful. No pregnant students alright? I can ask Ritsuko to add something to the LCL to prevent any little accidents if you're not going to be smart about things," Misato had a hand on both teenagers shoulders and gave both equal 'evil-eye' treatment. Standing up tall, chest puffed out in Shinji's direction just to annoy Ayaka, "You two are not subtle, and I know you like each other. But last week or so you've been a bit extra. Just play it safe or I'll have to step in." With a wink, Misato left the pair behind…Shinji heard Asuka yelp out in pain and swear the pool was almost boiling hot.

X-X

It was finally going to be her time to shine, show these other pilots who really was the best of them. Asuka wasn't proud of her first two soirees into official combat, but this time was going to be different! It wasn't going to be like the awkward dual piloting event where seeing an eldritch being for the first time caused her to pause and Shinji took over. Neither was it going to be like the oddity that was her first battle on Japanese soil, how Shinji took down the twin angels didn't make sense. This was going to be all her, all Asuka, and she was going to wow them with her elegance and skill!

"No stupid Shinji to get in my way or Wondergirl to look creepily at everything. They're putting their best pilot on this thing!" Asuka assured herself. A small part of her brain wondered if she was only being used due to Unit-02 being the first true model so it was easier to adapt to the new equipment, and a smaller part prayed they weren't using her as she was the most expendable. Being dropped into a volcano was very dangerous, but what was she really going to have to do? Sealing the special suit Akagi provided her for today's test, "It's my skill at adaption, being able to think on my feet."

Leaving the changing room and making her way towards the temporary testing area for the D-Type equipment, Asuka saw all the staff avoiding her. They looked at her with fear and awe, one of the Children was coming and they best make way for them! Strange people though, Japan was not what she expected and it continued to confuse her. "Your number one pilot has arrived!" Asuka announced as she boldly stepped into the test bay and came to a full stop. "My Unit-02, what have they done to you?" Asuka felt her heart shatter.

"Ah this is your first time seeing the true D-Type equipment isn't it. Had to insure no damage to the internal systems thanks to pressure," Ritsuko gave Asuka a cursory glance from her position up high atop a catwalk. The D-Type equipment, in Asuka's eyes, was an abomination! A bulbous grey suit akin to an old diving suit that only let Unit-02s face show out of a tiny viewing hole, it looked pitiful. Akagi activated the setup test plug, "If you'll get into the test unit we'll see how your modified plugsuit handles the pressure. A lot needs to be tested before we risk your health. And if you'd stop flirting with Ibuki-kun and go do your job maybe we can get done before supper."

Holding his hands up, Kaji winked at Asuka as he stepped away from the cowering Maya, "Sorry just trying to see what is going on here. Ibuki-kun has an odd way about her, reminds me of somebody I knew back in Germany, nice guy. How you doing kiddo?" Kaji left Maya, stuffed his hands into his pocket, and approached the young verdant rose (well she considered herself one).

While she wanted to be angry at Kaji for avoiding her lately, even failed to show up to her little bathing suit purchasing event! What guy wouldn't give his left (dirty) nut to go with Asuka and her friends on such a tantalizing ordeal? The apes in her 'grade' would have salivated themselves into dehydration, and yet Kaji had 'work' to do so he couldn't show. Trying to sound pouty yet alluring, "I'm angry at you! Not showing up for lunch or helping me pick out a bikini! You haven't even seen me at the pool yesterday! And now is see you flirting with that tech girl." Asuka hissed softly at Kaji, never good for adults to hear their younger superiors talking about them, and pointed hotly at Maya.

"Sorry, but something is strange here, I'm sure you noticed," Kaji leaned in and whispered into Asuka's ear. Her body went ridged and she had to fight to keep her cheeks from going full red, she got a light pink. Patting her shoulder softly, "I'm going to leave you a little gift in your locker, to make up for being busy all the time. A silly superstition of mine, but I think it'll keep you safe, hope you wear it." With another wink he stood up and let the girl try and regain her regal composure.

A gift? Kaji got her a gift!? Take that you old cows! Trying to wet her mouth, it was dry as hell, "Y-yeah things are strange. I'll tell you about it after the tests if you're still around." Her belly was full of butterflies and her legs jelly. But being the superior stock she was, Asuka was positive she didn't have a goofy smile on her face and wasn't blushing like an idiot. Idiot Shinji did that when he didn't think anybody was watching him being all flirty with that giant of his! Rubbing at the bruise on her butt compliments of one of Kagari's little accidents during swimming, Asuka didn't get Japanese girl's attraction.

"Asuka why haven't you activated the D-type yet, hit the button on your left wrist. It'll activate the suits special properties. Did you read the instructions I left with it?" Ritsuko called out just a little curtly. When they got to that age, Asuka reasoned, time was the only thing they really had. As time slipped away what beauty they had withered while the new blossoms got the bees attention.

Hitting the left activation button, Asuka had neglected to read the instructions, horror filled the poor girl's mind. Her body bloated and distended, a strange sensation crawled over her confined body, and true horror known only to a select few overcame her. "I look hideous! Don't look at me!" Asuka shrieked as she found her exit and ran towards it. Kaji couldn't see her looking like some fat ball of blubber! But running wasn't as easy with the extra padding and air resistance, she flubbed about and bounced as she threw herself into the test plug, hearing laughter as she did. Yeah, laugh it up you jerks! Wasn't her fault but get what joy you can at other peoples expense! Kaji hadn't laughed, not him, right?

The image of Ritsuko emerged in the plug, "Don't worry about them, techs just letting off some steam. Been working them hard since Misato insisted on this capture attempt. If you have to be angry at anybody, its her. Now the test will be the same just…" Ritsuko drooled on, but Asuka tuned her out. Flittering through the cameras, Asuka found the external camera for Unit-02 and saw Kaji had actually left. Well he was a busy guy, and if he stayed behind some lesser woman would try and flirt, so it was for the best.

Being in the plug was annoying, the suit trapped in the heat far more than the original, she felt herself swimming in sweat. Not complaining, only children complained about things they couldn't fight, but she did not enjoy it. Again and again somebody screwed something up during the test though. Increasing the pressure to fast/slow, using the wrong type of LCL, and in one case they exceeded safety standards, but Asuka championed on and eventually Ritsuko was able to accept the suit would do the job. After the tank was drained, Asuka tore off to her locker. Not for the cooling shower she claimed she wanted, but to see what Kaji left for her! "If somebody stole it from me, I'll step on their…there it is!" Asuka found a small box in her locker under her clothing.

"Take that old bags," Asuka smiled at the small necklace Kaji got her. The gem that hung from it was beautiful, but Asuka didn't know what type it was. It was orb shaped and the color was…Asuka couldn't really tell. The more she looked at it, the more it shifted and changed, but it was gorgeous! Putting it on proudly, pulling her hair out from the chain, she took a quick shower. After getting back into her favorite sundress, she saw an annoyance waiting for her outside the changing room. Putting on her best 'talking to adults' voice, "How can I help you, Ibuki-san? Something else you need from me before I leave?" Her phone said it was nearly supper time and Asuka wanted food. If she got home fast enough she could steal a meal from the Katsuragi residence again. Asuka tried to annoy them at least once a day, keep the 'lovebirds' from doing anything.

Maya fidget about and scratched at her cheek while avoiding eye contact with her junior, "Just wanted to remind you that the operation is the day after tomorrow. Tomorrow is going to be moving Unit-02 and Unit-01 to the operation site. And I think Katsuragi-san is planning to hot spring reward for the two of you after it's done. And have you noticed anything strange with the Princess?" Ah, it was the typical adult nature of thinking all people younger than them had no memory. Condescending nature in the guise of being polite.

"Thanks, not like I could avoid it if I wanted. Misato lives on my floor so even if I wanted to avoid it she'd just knock the door down and drag me. And nope that giant is still pretending to be with that idiot, even kissed his cheek," Asuka loved the wide eyed blinking Maya resorted to. Waving cutely, "Well I'm off. Don't stay to late now. Bye-bye!" Wiggling her fingers at the still stunned woman, Asuka skipped off enjoying the feeling of her new pendant against her chest. Something did strike Asuka as odd though, "Why does she care about that giant and…" A wave of vertigo hit Asuka suddenly, but she shook it off. To little blood sugar or something, as quickly as it came it went and her vision cleared and the ground was beneath her again, just why did Maya ask about Kagari? Pervert, just because the giant had massive tits, long shining hair, and…ok stop thinking about it or she'd get depressed.

It was a muggy walk to the apartment, or maybe just residuals from the test, Asuka hoped that Komachi had the A/C running when she got back. Kasumi, like the rest of their class, was off on a school trip, so it was just the matron and Asuka at the apartment when Asuka was there. Kasumi was a very strange girl, fixated on Shinji and her 'sibling' relationship that only Kasumi didn't see as weird. But Kasumi was smart, had good fashion sense, could play a mean game, and had Shinji under her finger which provided many fridge benefits to Asuka. Not a bad friend, but Komachi…

"Oh hello, Asuka-chan, I was about to head off for work. Worried I'd not see you, left a note, but I guess I didn't need to! Do you need anything before I go?" Komachi was putting her shoes on to leave as Asuka arrived.

Taking her shoes off, being careful not to mess up the carefully cleaned entry that Komachi kept, Asuka felt her growing unease. "No I'm good. Going to go bother Shinji for supper. If I don't, those two will just sit in the living room letting mushrooms grow on them. You…going to be late?" Asuka wasn't sure how to take Komachi at all. Not classically attractive, but she had a wholesomeness about her, aged well, and polite when in a good mood. Occasionally if Kasumi pushed hard thought the woman would go into a deep depression that took both Shinji and Kasumi to bring her out of it. And this woman's fixation with the elder Kagari was something Asuka just let slip by and not think about, something's shouldn't be thought to hard about.

Standing by the door but wobbling with indecision, Komachi had her hand to her chin, "I have some time before I go, I like to head in early in case I get distracted. How was your…you had some sort of test today yes?" Asuka hardly spoke of Nerv at the Takamiya apartment, but Komachi was able to gleam much of what Asuka did and tried to talk about it. Why though? Komachi wasn't her mother, was just an older woman Asuka was using to live off of base, yet she tried so hard to accommodate. What was the angle?

Stalking deeper into the dwelling, Asuka wouldn't be rude to this woman though, just leery. Grabbing a bottle of water, "Yeah a test. I have a mission with Shinji in a few days. Misato is planning a hot spring visit after…if you wanted to come I'm sure she'd be alright with it. You two do spend a lot of time together." Misato and Komachi did spend their evenings drinking and chatting at least once a week, much to the teenage girls chagrin. Not hearing the door open, Asuka was compelled to go back to see the woman still standing prone, "Something wrong? And been meaning to ask, did you want me to pay more in rent? Feel like I'm a freeloader here." She didn't pay for food or utilities, and had to fight Komachi to pay what little she did in rent.

"Just worried is all. A shame you children have to pilot those nasty things. Be much nicer if those monsters didn't attack and you could enjoy your lives. Well if you don't go over to visit, I've some food for you with the instructions in the fridge. If you do go, say hello for me. As for rent…I can pay for it, least I could do for somebody doing such dangerous work," with a small head bob, Komachi left the girl with a small wave.

Asuka just stood there for a few moments drinking her water and trying to find the con that Komachi was trying to play. Tapping her foot as her powerful brain kept hitting blocks, "She has to have some reason, it has to be a con or something. I'll find it." Nobody did anything for nothing, not even her. She piloted to prove her worth to humanity, prove that she was superior, and they paid her well for it. Yet Komachi worked as a shopping clerk or something, supported a daughter, and now an apartment? Whatever the father figure did, Asuka didn't know, guy was never around and nobody talked about him. Surely somebody like her would have let Asuka pay at least half of rent, but nope. Why? What was the play here?

A knock on the door interrupted Asuka's internal review of the strangely polite woman. "Yeah-yeah who…what are you doing here?" Asuka was not expecting to see the amazon on the other side of the door.

"Ikari-kun wanted to invite you for supper. Since you were going to show regardless of his asking, this is easier. You have been invited," Ayaka said flatly and left Asuka behind. Guess that was the offer, no need to stay and see if Asuka accepted it. Another strange creature that Asuka's mind just couldn't understand. People like Ayaka Kagari didn't just exist as this woman was! People like Ayaka were on television, were famous, and never settled for lame little house-broken males! And yet when Asuka did join them for supper, she cleaned his cheek when he wasn't paying attention, filled his glass unknown to him, and dozens of other small little things he thanked her for that HE should have done for her! After food Shinji and Asuka played a game while Ayaka did some knitting of all things. Dating…ha…what a boring couple if they were dating!

X-X

Pacing in the tiny metal box on the edge of a volcano, Misato thought she'd feel warmer. The heat was definitely up there, her body was sweating profusely, but she was cold and numb. People called her many things, depending on the situation of course, but she didn't want to add child murderer to it. Yet here she stood with a girl on a big metal line about to be dropped into magma. In theory this was perfectly safe and was going to potentially get a sample that could help end the fight against the Angels, but any risk was a risk. "You ready to go Asuka? In and out and then a nice soak at the hot spring after," Misato radioed Asuka and Shinji by proxy.

"I've been waiting for this! Sooner we get done the sooner I can get out of this nasty suit! It's all clingy and sticks to me in odd places!" Asuka was in good spirits at least. Girl could, and did, complain about the Type-D equipment but she was all for a truly solo mission.

Unit-01 could be seen moving to the lip of the volcano from the window of the operation base. Shinji was not as enthusiastic about the mission, even less Misato denying Kagari the ability to go to the little reward. It was a little family trip from Misato and him, stoking Asuka's ego, and a small gift for the others on her fools errand. Shinji's face popped up over comms with this typical hangdog expression, "Unit-01 in position, securing the coolant lines. Be careful Asuka."

Kid was going to worry himself into early ulcers or nasty vices if he didn't learn how to relax, Misato feared. Just hoped the vice wasn't getting things on with that roommate of theirs. How he couldn't Misato didn't understand, girl was a craven image (well if she showed normal emotion). "How they haven't already broken a headboard or two with how they sneak around one another…" Misato bit her thumb.

"Something wrong Katsuragi-san? Did you say Ikari-kun broke his headboard?" Maya asked innocently enough. Woman was at the station closest to Misato and was dutifully working so didn't seem to hear everything. But ever since Misato started noticing Maya saying odd things about the Kagari family, Misato was extra leery around her.

Her fingers went to caress the small bauble that Kaji gave her, it felt warmer to the touch than it should and it comforted Misato. Scanning the room for activity and finding none, Misato nodded to herself, "More a joke. Just seems that Shinji-kun and that little girlfriend of his are pining for one another but neither acts on it. Shinji I can read, gentleman not wanting to push to fast, but Ayaka I have no idea. I've seen her just stand outside the bathroom when he's in it waiting. Keep expecting her to walk in, but she doesn't. Once they do cross that line…going to be hulk-smash." Just who would be the hulk Misato pondered.

Turning to Misato, Maya's eyes blinked rapidly as her mouth opened and closed wordlessly a few times. After her few aborted attempts to talk finally caught up with her mind, "Maybe you're just thinking to hard on this. She's just waiting to use the toilet is all, nothing more." Maya's hands fiddled about and made strange patterns, girl was weird.

"No Ibuki-kun, I live with them and can read a room. It's cute but they are still young. If Shinji-kun wasn't a pilot I'd tell them not to, but given what we're about to do…he wants to give that girl a pelvic exam…" Misato winked at Maya and left the tech to join Ritsuko at the main control console, Makoto was on that duty today. Rubbing her temple, stupid small headache had sprung at the worst time, Misato saw everything was good to go, any more waiting would just prolong the inevitable. Grabbing the offered cup of coffee, "Alright let's start this thing. Hyuga-kun lower her in, commence operation."

Despite Nerv not being directly a military operation they all performed as if they were. With Misato's command the crew all dropped the side chatter and snapped into action. For a girl that claimed she didn't care about 'little boys' Asuka didn't do herself any favors when she burst over the comms, "Look Shinji! Giant Stroke Entry!" Willing the massive Unit-02 and its ugly as hell equipment into a diving pose, Asuka was submerged into the magma.

"That girl is the queen of mixed signals. If it wasn't for the ease of Unit-02s connections I'd have switched her for either other pilot," Ritsuko groaned. Despite the rather dark comment, Ritsuko looked good to Misato. Happier, more vibrant, and oddly peppy for the typically somber and focused scientist.

The view from Unit-02's external camera was a red smear of nothing, Misato let the techs handle the understanding of what it all meant. As her anxiety grew Misato had to do something to get her mind off of the mission a little, so teasing. Lightly bouncing her shoulder off of Ritsuko's, "So what has you so good? You're practically glowing. Got a new man…woman…toy?" Misato wasn't adverse to the pleasures of the flesh, it was human nature, great stress relief, and nothing to be ashamed of.

Turning from the review of currents, temperature changes, and pressure readings Ritsuko fixed her hair and offered Misato a glorious smile. "Just a side project of mine is nearing completion. Been working on this thing for a few years now. My magnum opus so to speak. I'll let you know when I'm going to release it, want you there. But for now, lets keep our mind on your mission," by the gods Ritsuko was almost singing.

"We'll I'll be waiting for it, glad it's making you this happy, hope it's as good as you want," Misato meant it. Ritsuko was one of the few friends that lasted through the years of Misato's revenge plan. In college after she broke out of her shell Misato had dozens of friends. But over the years the calls and texts slowed to maybe once or twice a year, people got married, had kids, and living lives. Ritsuko however was with Misato the whole time. Before, during, and after Kaji carved a place in Misato's heart and then torn it out. Feeling unexpectedly emotional for a moment, Misato put a hand on Ritsuko's elbow and gave the confused woman a nod. Let the faux blond make whatever she wanted out of it.

The next two hours was tedious as it was anxiety riddled. Nothing happened other than Asuka telling snarky jokes to Shinji and pretending not to like him to some degree as she was lowered deeper and deeper. The adults kept the channel free for the Children so they could banter and deal with their fears. Lower and lower Unit-02 went, the pressure causing the loss of the sync-knife and the outer rigging of lights. Still Misato pressed hoping for some excuse for the expense of the operation. She had promised a victory here, what got the money she needed. Mountain operation bases, massive coolant lines, and the D-Type were not cheap and the yen-counters wanted results.

"Captain, we're at max safety rating for the gear we have and we haven't seen anything. We're at target depth, it's possible the chrysalis drifted further down. We are detecting a current," Makoto risked telling the truth to his non-secret crush.

Opening the channel to the pilots, Asuka was teasing Shinji about cleaning hair out of drains, "Asuka, we're at max safe depth. We can press on, but its up to you if you if you want to risk it. Say the word and we pull you up. We can try this another time and hope for better results." Misato knew before she asked, why she did ask, that Asuka would say to go forward. If anything did happen, it wasn't Misato's fault. At least not in her heart, if something bad happened.

"A moment of valor shines brightest against a backdrop of despair! Press on!" Asuka cheered.

Misato was about to comment on the poignant comment but Shinji cut in first, "You stole that from that game you were playing yesterday! Don't go claiming you came up with that!" As Asuka was lowered more, the kids bickered over Asuka's line theft. Those two did get along well together, Misato thought, if Shinji wasn't with Ayaka they'd have made an interesting pairing. They had a very sibling vibe, or maybe it was 'best friends'? What did happen was the room got so hot Misato had to put her coffee down, it was practically boiling now.

"Katsuragi-san, I'm seeing something!" Maya cut through the fun din of ribbing the pilots were having. The following twenty minutes stole at least five years from Misato's life due to stress. Yes the angel was found, and the capture operation started. Sadly the stupid thing was either triggered by the cage or just bad timing had the thing hatch. The D-Type, sans knife, had little it could do to fight, but the pilots came up with a stupid idea that worked. Maybe Misato should take some time to remind herself of all the science classes she missed thanks to fucking Kaji. But damage was done, Asuka's tether snapped, and that idiot boy of hers dove in to save her. Dove in with no safety equipment, no defenses, and Misato was sure he was going to pass out and they'd be down to only Ayanami.

"He's got her! I don't know how he's still awake with that pressure, but he did it. Now would somebody please fix the A/C in here, I'm about to burst into flames!" Ritsuko yelled. And she was not kidding, the whole ops box was a tinderbox of pure heat, everybody was sweltering, yet Misato still felt cold. Another ten minutes of stomach clenching anxiety followed as Unit-01 and 02 were pulled back, at any moment Misato expected to hear how Shinji fainted and fell.

Once they were clear of the magma, thankfully the heat abated at that time, Misato needed out. "Ritsuko, you bring those two to the inn when they get cleared. I need…I can't let them see me like this right now or I'll be far to hard on him. Not good for anybody," Misato pleaded with her longest remaining friend.

"Get going, I'll get them down there. And I'll read them the riot act for you. Ikari-kun needs to be reprimanded for his actions, but that doesn't mean it has to be from you," Ritsuko hiked her thumb at the door and nodded her approval.

Misato didn't need another moment, and rushed out of the box and to the cable car that lead to the makeshift parking area. "Stupid kid, he can't do shit like that to me now. What was he thinking…he wasn't that was obvious. Kids are stupid, they do stupid things, and that boy is to brave at the worst times," Misato pound on the Plexiglas of the cab. But it was actions like this little dive that made Misato wonder if Shinji was suicidal or just too selfless for his own good. He had been listening to Asuka whine about the Type-D equipment since the first day she wore it, yet he went in without it. What was he thinking? Asuka wore it because she was a 'sissy' or something?

Misato pounded on the plastic a few more times, it helped to hit something. Her drive to the inn took only half of the expected time thanks to her lead foot. But as she drove she thought, and calmed down. It was just Shinji doing what he thought was best, stupid yes, but what he thought was best. Couldn't let a friend die without trying to do something. Misato had to believe he'd have grabbed the line and abandon the rescue attempt if he felt he was going to pass out. Adrenaline did crazy things to the body, and he likely rode that all the way down and up.

"Oh Katsuragi-san, you're…well I don't know if early or not, Asuka-chan didn't really give me a timeframe of when to expect you," Komachi was at the parking lot of the inn when Misato arrived. Holding an oversized bag and a fetching hat, Komachi was all smiles until she saw Misato's grave expression. Rushing over, nearly falling in the process, "Is something wrong? Did something happen to Asuka-chan? Shinji-kun?"

Linking elbows with the woman, Misato was going to spare the woman the pain she had suffered. "There was a small accident but everything is fine. They're on their way now, I just needed out of that box. You know you could have gone in, I rented out the whole place for the day. Well the government did, they're footing the bill today. So lets get a drink and relax!" Misato felt proud of her act. The mother wouldn't know how frazzled Misato was, and after a drink or two maybe she'd even feel like enjoying the baths!

"If you say so, I wouldn't mind. Been hard at the apartment with the girls. They argue a lot, but they are good for each other," Komachi let herself be lead. The women quickly found a host that provided them with a few cans apiece, and they partied the only way parents can once they can relax a little. After a few cans were drunk they did opt to head into the bath early. As they were disrobing, "Oh my, did that hurt?"

Trying not to stare at Komachi's scar, on the woman's back, Misato forgot to cover her own secret shame. "Maybe it did when I got it, can't really remember. A lot of my childhood is a blur, I was in Antarctica during Second Impact. This is my reminder of it. What about yours? If we're talking battle scars, mind telling about yours?" Misato hated her scar, reminded her of her mission and bastard father.

"I don't recall much of it either. Yui-chan and I…something happened to us but Kazane-chan saved us. Wish I could remember more about it," Komachi's brow furrowed in confusion laced with regret. Taking her can she extended it to Misato, they clinked them together and finished them. For a mother, woman had aged well and was quite fetching on Misato's eyes. Noticing the gaze, Komachi blushed a little, "You're attractive yourself Misato, but we best get going or we'll be spotted looking silly!"

The embarrassment was only passing, and Misato was not on the market for the woman, just appreciating is all. Tossing Komachi another can, "Let them stare, I'm sure Asuka is going to complain about being nude. For a girl that claims to be an adult all the time, she's amazingly childish when it comes to our culture. Now I could use a soak!" Boldly walking out into the open air bath, Misato proceeded to charge into the sulfurous waters and sink up to her shoulders. Ah, now this heat was bliss.

Komachi joined a few moments later, but just sat with her legs in. They continued there 'mother talk' and shared experiences that they had regarding the pair of teenagers they lived with. Eventually their private party was crashed by Ritsuko and Asuka, others would eventually join but not for at least another hour. Once the privacy was gone, it was just talking about simple and banal things.

Misato tried teasing Shinji through the wall, commenting about all the flesh on display, yet he was oddly distracted. Well Misato wasn't going to go over the event in front of Komachi. But Misato was almost positive she heard Shinji talking and more than one splash. Pen-Pen? Bird was there, but…could Ayaka have…no…maybe…no, not possible…right?

X-X

Sitting at the small desk in his room, Shinji just couldn't focus. He just looked at his hand and flexed it a few times. The sensation was phantom, but he was sure still remembered the texture, heat, suppleness of what they had felt the day before. So much happened in twenty-four hours, but that was his life. Either it was slow and steady plodding, the same boring events repeating forever. Then the opposite would happen and he missed the boring days. First was the volcano, Asuka defeating the Angel, and then his stupid dive into to catch her. And then the onsen and the insanity that happened there!

"Pen-Pen you have fun at least?" Shinji pet the avian as it walked about the apartment. Bird warked its typical happy sound as Shinji tickled under it's beak and then left. Peeking out the door, Shinji thought he saw a shadow on the wall, Kagari, but he didn't call out. They weren't ignoring one another after they shared a bath, but Shinji was still embarrassed and suspected Kagari was as well. Touching a girl was different than touching himself, and being touched was definitely different. Looking down at his little problem of thermal expansion, "Never expected it to feel so…" He was a teenager, so was she, so endurance wasn't really a thing.

Then Asuka had to go and ask for the shampoo and that ended the illusion of being alone. Ayaka wasn't happy with being reminded of Shinji's little stunt of near immolation, blamed Asuka a little for that. How the Flame Witch was able to lob the bottle in such a way to strike Asuka as she had, well magic had to be involved. Then it was Komachi's comments and Misato's teasing about how Asuka was acting that once again caused a little cause of thermal expansion, Ayaka was very interested in just why Shinji reacted that way. Girls can be just as protective of their significant other as guys Shinji reasoned, Ayaka doubly so. And while those on the female side of the onsen couldn't hear Ayaka, they could hear Shinji talk…if they heard him talking they'd assume he was crazy.

"But she was very…VERY attractive in her robes," and just her robes Shinji took several calming breaths. Not something he expected before moving to Tokyo-3, but now that they were officially dating it was part of the package. His fingers had been inside…don't get a fat head about it, treat it with respect and learn as they walked hand-in-hand forward towards the unknown. Grabbing his cello, Shinji started working on restringing it as a way to keep his focus, "She was extra defensive after the fact to." He felt the same, finding somebody to actually love gave Shinji more determination to win against the angels, to protect Ayaka in the only way he actually could. She didn't need him for anything else, she was his protector in all other things. So he'd fill his role for her then, be her 'princess' and do his best to let her know he cared. Would be hard, he wasn't good with that sort of thing, but he'd do his damned best.

Making her way into Shinji's room, Ayaka had her apron on and hair tied up in a massive ponytail, "I will be making supper today. You will continue to rest as you are still pale. No argument today." Ah yes, her demands of him to rest thanks to the whole pressure issue. Ritsuko did a quick health examination after he got out of the plug and said to take it easy for a few days, report in if anything felt off. Unit-01 was heavily damaged from the pressure and heat, but how much he was spared was unknown. Ayaka was taking that as an excuse to do all the cooking/cleaning/everything. Made Shinji feel like a leech, but fighting Ayaka was pointless.

"I can at least help you with it, right?" Shinji set his half-finished efforts at restringing down. Yeah, they weren't avoiding each other, though Shinji couldn't really look her in the eyes without feeling he was going to burst into flames. She just nodded, even the stoic Ayaka was at the mercy of the memory of the onsen, so Shinji followed. Hearing a loud noise through the wall, the new neighbors being rowdy, "Think we should make some food for them as well? You going to tell me the plan you have for them?" Kagari's plans were always kept from Shinji until she had a reason to tell him, but why she insisted they keep the KMM gang and Medusa next door was extra strange.

Pulling out far more food than they'd need for just the two of them, Misato was in her 'hell shifts' that always followed an angel, Ayaka pointed at a back of cat food. "That will suffice for them, if they need more they can get it. And I've a deal with Medusa regarding my mother. We'll have to fight her for answers soon," Shinji hoped she was joking. Meat, meat, and more meat was on the menu and more than one old wives tale for restoring health and stamina.

"I'm going to be fine, Kag…Ayaka-san," Shinji took hold of the frazzled chef to stop her. She froze up for a moment and then gave his hands a squeeze. Afraid, he caused her to become afraid for a moment. He didn't understand the whole link between them, how the 'white stuff' inside him powered and protected her. But did remember that being in LCL effected it, so if he was in Unit-01 he was vulnerable, his little drop would have killed him, not her. That scared her far more than it scared him, funny that. After the onsen, Shinji also couldn't help but use her first name, while alone at least. Kissing her knuckle, "I didn't mean to scare you, but I couldn't just let Asuka-san fall if I could help. Something…something feels wrong about that." For a moment Kazane Kagari flashed into Shinji's mind, a half hidden memory surfacing.

Scoffing from the doorframe, Asuka leaned against the small divide, "If you're going to flirt do it in your room. But Misato did tell me to check on you, make sure you weren't being over used. Looks like I got here in…" The apron was off Ayaka and wrapped around Asuka's head as it was thrown and hit perfectly. Asuka took offense to that, and the one-sided verbal spar began.

"I'll go get the others while you two…deal with this," Shinji fled the kitchen. Asuka was trying to get a rise out of Ayaka but all that did was upset the girl more as each attempt failed. But it did give Shinji a chance to realize Asuka likely did stop something. Was he being to bold? Shinji wasn't stupid, knew that Ayaka would do just about anything he asked (maybe anything) and he had to restrain himself from abusing that. Putting his slippers on, "Wonder what Touji or Kensuke would do in my place?" At times he'd think they'd be more 'forward' about it, but saying a thing and doing one are different things.

Knocking on the door, how Ayaka got the apartment for them Shinji did not want to know, Shinji listened to the random acts of mayhem on the other side. Crashes, loud yells, something breaking, and then finally the door opened and it was the furry eared one. "Oh h-hello Crazy-san, wanted to ask if you'd join us for supper. I don't know what deal you have with Kagari-san, but thought you'd…you'd…" Shinji stammered as Medusa appeared behind the cat eared girl, "Hello Medusa-san."

"What a polite boy you are, don't worry I won't attack you now. I honor my deals, and right now I am in that girl's debt. But if you are offering to let us dine with you, girls get ready," Medusa called out to her girls. Various cheers could be heard as the five drastically different Tower Witches rapidly prepared for the arduous trip next door. Huge was the first thing Shinji thought when he actually took in Medusa, woman was positively massive. Then the bound hands and eye covering were cutely made, and lastly the hair. Not ugly, not beautiful, but truly unique and Shinji was not brave enough to ask about it. Gesturing towards the hallway, "After you kind host."

Letting all the random comments the girls made fade into the ether, Shinji's anxiety was back. Each of them said something akin to 'can we take him now' but Medusa wouldn't allow it. These weren't friends, not traditional at least, they were allies of necessity. Medusa kept them on a short leash, but not by hostility or aggression, more a supportive mother. The five girls all listened to the orders politely and immediately, lovingly.

"M-make yourselves at home. The floor plan is like yours, so if you'd go to the dining room I'll see about supper," Shinji opened the door to the guests. Keeping his eyes downward, Shinji thought it best to not tempt fate by interacting more with the them. Lively girls for sure, but they were unknowns. Avoiding where he sent the guests, Shinji found Ayaka alone in the kitchen, "Uh…Asuka still here?"

Various plates of food were all laid out, one that was overflowing with meat and another that was far to much sugar for one human to typically want. "She is in the dining room, she won't leave until she eats. That is her plate," Ayaka pointed at the nearly bare plate, a few pieces of lettuce and gristle. Taking up plates akin to how a restaurant server would, Kagari left the two for them behind, guess she'd let Shinji take those.

His plate was heavy and Shinji knew he'd end up giving a lot of it to Asuka or it'd go to waste, Kagari's was laden with sweats. Good mood equated to good food. Finding the table completely surrounded, Kagari glaring at the green haired KMM until they left their chair. Shinji found his place at the table and put down the plates. "W-well, thanks for showing. Asuka these are…Kagari-san's friends," Shinji tried to smile but even to him it felt fake. Asuka just took her plate, stole from Shinji's, and kept silent, even she knew when not to make a scene. Oh Shinji would hear about it another time, he bet, but right now Asuka was more focused on the food and not the massive woman at the table and her five eccentric daughters.

"To our host and chef," Medusa offered before the feeding frenzy began. All of Medusa's daughters wanted to be the one to feed her, and themselves, but they didn't really know timing. Ayaka ate peacefully but would effortlessly bat away anything that flew there way, one time catching Menowa's wolf-pelt when it tried to lick some sauce off of Shinji's cheek.

Doing his best to eat the well prepared food, Shinji just couldn't eat it all so after sampling all the different cuts did 'sneak' Asuka a good portion. He had no illusions that Kagari knew he did it, but she allowed it just the same. A knock on the door mid-meal gave Shinji an excuse to flee the table. "Not used to this much activity at the table, its nice," Shinji didn't mind the madness as long as he wasn't expected to perform, he could just sit and let the others do all the talking. Opening the door though, things shifted from a light hearted meal into something much more serious, "Hello, how may I help…Kagari-san? W-what are you doing here?" Why was Ayaka's mother here? With all the Tower Witches, what was going to happen?

Ruffling Shinji's hair as she walked in with a cheeky grin and an unlit smoke in her mouth, "Just checking on you two. Medusa is still running about and I wanted to ask my daughter if she'd seen the bitch." Practically lifting Shinji up and putting him down to her side, she wasn't going to let Shinji even attempt to prevent her entrance. Boldly calling out, "Ayaka get out here, we have witches to talk about!"

Oh no. No-no-no, Shinji just stood motionless as the unstoppable object was about to hit the immovable one! When Kazane rounded hallway to see into the dining area, Shinji's paralysis broke when the scream of war was let loose. Running to see what was happening, Shinji missed the first event apparently as all of the daughters were in a pile behind Ayaka and Medusa. "Ayaka explain! What are you doing with these Tower Witches! Shinji-kun you knew this too?" Kazane pulled some brass knuckles out of her pockets and put them on.

"You will fulfill your oath now, Ikari-kun don't look," Ayaka nodded to the gorgon who just chuckled unafraid. A blinding flash of light filled the room, and when it dimmed enough for Shinji to see again Medusa was gone, but Ayaka was different. Her hair was more red, her school uniform was scaled and had a movie ninja feel to it…and sheer enough that Shinji could make out her belly button. Oh and a massive purple backed snake with gray belly surrounded her accompanied by floating orbs.

"So that was the plan all along? You're not after the White Witch but my daughter as your successor Medusa!? I won't allow this. Ikari-kun, tell her to stop this stupidity now, she'll listen to you!" Kazane summoned her broom and lashed out at Ayaka. Broom met scythe in a massive clash.

Wait? How did Ayaka's mother come to such a crazed solution as that? Medusa didn't have any care about Ayaka, but Kazane thought so? Shinji didn't know what to even say at that, being ordered to tell Ayaka to do something as she wouldn't listen to her mother? "Can't we talk about this first? I'm sure there is an explanation for it all," Shinji could at least try to be a peace maker.

"Just like I heard, Kazane the clueless detective, so smart but so-so stupid. Now lets fulfill this pact," Medusa's voice could be heard emanating from one of the snakes. Several clashes of fire and scythe against Kazane's broom and mighty fist. But age trumped beauty and Kazane ducked through one of Ayaka's blows and grabbed the girl by the collar.

Shielding his eyes as another flash came from Ayaka, Shinji was stunned to see Kazane starting to turn into stone. Starting at the face and moving to the whole body, the massive weight toppled and fell atop Ayaka. "Stay as a statue for awhile mother," Ayaka asked penitently as she clawed her way out of the stone grasp.

Getting to her side, Shinji tried to help her up, but Ayaka refused to let him touch her. "Are you alright? Will she be?" Shinji asked. Up close he could see even more snake regalia all over Ayaka's combined form. Before she could answer him though, Shinji felt a blow through her as bits of rock exploded from the chairwoman. The rocks hit Ayaka and propelled her into Shinji sending him rolling to the ground.

"Foolish daughter! Did you really think such a small thing would defeat me? Evermillion loathes impurity! By fusing with Medusa you lost before we even started! She cut you off from your power and invincibility! But I guess you need more punishment to learn your lesson!" Kazane shouted as she moved with speed that even Ayaka couldn't match. On her feet and already grabbing Ayaka by the shoulder, the chairwoman readied a powerful blow, drawing back her fist to strike a massive blow.

Time slowed for Shinji as he witnessed everything transpire. Ayaka was apparently weaker now that she was fused with Medusa, not stronger. She didn't have the invincibility he provided her, so he had to do something! With a seal undone, he should be able to do something, anything to help her. He had to, had to try! But what…how? Power, he needed to use some type of power! Tap into it, tap into…Evermillion…the name was familiar suddenly to him but he didn't know why or how. Help…help…help…Shinji felt heat spread across his face, Ayaka called out for him not to do something, and then…

"STUPID DAUGHTER!" Shinji heard Kazane screaming directly into his face. Wait did he just switch places with…and then he felt the blow to the face and then nothingness.

X-X

The first day back to school after their rather lackluster trip, Kensuke was suffering from post-vacation malaise. Class just didn't keep his attention, didn't have the energy to mess around on his computer, and wanted very much to have a nap and it was just after lunch. Not the best on a good day, to make matters worse Hime-sama was gone! Hime-sama never missed school, was nothing but the bastion of perfection, and yet there were three notable empty seats today. Much like the rest of the Fan-Club, Kensuke was hoping to get a welcoming refueling of energy from the schools most important person. But she wasn't there, and now rumors were starting to flirt around regarding the cause.

They couldn't be true though, just couldn't! Kensuke liked Shinji, Shinji was a small socially inept person like himself. They could relate to one another on so many levels and shared so many commonalities in their daily lives. So Kensuke could not in his wildest dreams, truly, believe that Shinji was off with Hime-sama and Asuka having some debauched encounter! "She'd never do something so…human. She's beyond such things," Kensuke muttered as he squeezed his pen harder. It didn't break, didn't have the ambient strength to do it.

"Dude, you alright? Looking paler than normal which is hard cause we both have tans," Touji tried joking. Leaning in to chat, which was easy as the teacher was droning on about another of his pre-Second Impact lectures. But a cautious teenager was a safe teenager, so Touji continually check on the doddering old man to insure no detention or bucket holding was in the cards.

Touji just didn't get it, Kensuke realized ages ago, but that was just due to the class difference. Jocks were a rung up in society, well above the level of tech nerds who sell photos of the pretty girls in school. Kensuke accepted that about himself, people saw him as a bottom feeder at best or a pervert at worst. Oh they'd gladly come to buy pictures of Asuka, Ayanami, or Kazari Rin, but they'd all mock him the moment the transaction took place and the encounter gone. Kensuke had seen it more than once, and accepted it. But hey, at least he got their money and knew what girl/boy they fancied in case any threats were thrown his way. Touji wasn't part of the lesser side of Kensuke's side business or his social status. So hearing rumors about Shinji being elevated out of the quagmire into 'high' popularity was a betrayal.

"You think something is wrong? A lot of people are out today, most of them are those that missed the trip," Kensuke pointed at several empty chairs. The newest squad of five girls were gone, two of the pilots gone, and Hime-sama's desk was a shrine of mourning. After the last 'talk' from Touji about Shinji and Hime-sama, Kensuke was doing his best to avoid the topic. Why get into a fight about the same thing again. Pointing at his screen, it was off but Touji couldn't see it, Kensuke lied, "Seeing some strange things online today. Think something happened and they're covering it up?"

Rubbing his chin, something Touji did a lot since he claimed to be growing facial hair, the jock slowly shook his head. Both teens quickly sat back naturally in their seats as the teacher turned back to face the class. The older man proceeded to lecture the class for a solid hour about how wonderful the seasons were and nearly put all of them to sleep. Thankfully the class representative saved the collective minds of the students by shaking herself awake and announcing the end of the day. Students were quickly to load up there bags and rush out the doors for a return of freedom that the Okinawa trip instilled in them. A few stayed behind to clean or chat a little before clubs or the lonely walk home.

"Did you not get any texts from Shin-man? He sent me a few, figured he'd send them to you too," Touji was in camp club. Track team was having some 'make-up' drills and Touji was in for some torture. Just like in Okinawa, Touji tried to stand tall and get some of the ladies attention, but had just as much success now as he did on trip.

Oh yeah, Shinji did send messages didn't he. Kensuke nodded, "Something about a mission where he was going to support Asuka. Think they're sick or something then? Should we visit?" Shinji had told Kensuke about the volcano, an onsen visit, and being yelled at by the scientist lady Kensuke could never remember the name of. Even with all the comments from the Fan-Club and animosity towards Shinji, Kensuke did not want anything bad to happen to his 'fellow geek'. Kensuke wasn't that petty to want pain on others for such things. Maybe a little shaming yes, but pain/hurt never.

Checking his bag for his running shoes Touji pulled them out, face contorted in confusion. "I don' think so. But we can ask Ayanami about it, she still here. She'd know if something happened right? Personally I'm hoping those rumors about Shin-man and Kagari-san are accurate. I did give him a hard push before the trip. Practically a match-maker!" Touji puffed his chest out in pride. A few departing students, club members, glared at Touji's stupidity.

"Well I guess we could ask Ayanami-san about it, but if its NERV related, think she could tell us?" Kensuke was already standing up. Reluctant yes, to learn either way was something Kensuke was not wanting to hear. Shinji hurt was bad, Shinji dead worst, but Shinji and Hime-sama together was bad to. If Shinji could land a girl like Hime-sama meant that he was on a level far above Kensuke, meaning he was alone on the bottom. Getting a push from Touji, the pair slowly crossed the room towards the quiet girl nobody talked to or bothered. "H-hey Ayanami-san, got a minute? We're worried about Shin-man, know anything? H-he said something about a mission while we were gone," Kensuke wanted to sock Touji. Big strong jock making the small nerd do the talking!

Closing her book, Ayanami swiveled in her chair and eyed the two with consummate disinterest. "Mission was complete, no casulties. Unit-01 suffered some damage. Ikari-kun is currently with Soryu and Kagari in the Chairman's holding room," Ayanami put her book away and stood up. As she did the boys took an unconscious step backward. As she moved, they backed up and got out of her way, and they felt both chilled and warm at the same time. Sniffing the air about them, her nostril flared wildly, "Punishment for breaking rules."

"Oh so they're actually here? Huh, guess that makes sense. Reality is less interesting than rumors I guess," Touji half chuckled. Tugging on Kensuke's shirt to start another wave of retreating from the slim nothing of a girl, the boys were just herded. Rubbing at his neck, Touji was sweating quite a bit, "You know what they got in trouble for?"

Breezing past them, Ayanami shrugged, "Contraband," was all she said as she left.

Breaking out in a full body shiver complete with goose bumps, Kensuke rubbed at the offending hairs. "Well that was strange, she keeps getting weirder and weirder. But at least we know what is up now. Not as exciting as you wanted, or as bad as I was fearing. Contraband brought into school so they have to talk to Hime-sama's mom. Boring, but better than the alternatives," Kensuke did start packing up now. The ice cube in his chest had dislodged and he wasn't worried he'd never chat with his buddy again…and they were still technically on the same lower scale of social worth.

Bending over and putting his palms on his knees, Touji let out a low and slow deep breath. "We not going to talk about how Ayanami is becoming creepier by the day? Don't know what is going on with her, but the less we have to talk to her the better," Touji yelped out. Gathering the last of his stuff, Touji took a few moments to let the odd creepy girl fears leave him. "You want to play something online later? Not really feeling homework, and maybe we can try and get Shin-man to join in. Have him tell us about whatever mission he had or whatever happened with Kagari-san," shoes in hand, bag over shoulder Touji was ready to head off to his club.

"Sure, text me or call me when you want to do something. I'll be bored at home since now I know why dad will have to work more. Pretty sure he's on Unit-02s repair team," Kensuke mindlessly prepared to leave. With a weak wave, the pair separated and Kensuke was left alone. On a good day he'd walk to the crossroad with Shinji and Touji and chat a bit, typically Hime-sama would be with them (and as a member of the club he'd do his best to insure Hime-sama was not bothered). Now it was just the slow plodding back to the apartment and his personal computer.

Leaving the school grounds, he saw the Takamiya girl yelling at Hikari about something, not his business. Everybody has their own drama to deal with, let the popular girls/guys suffer a little too in ways Kensuke would never need to. Avoiding the primary group of the Fan-Club enforcers, they were angry at him for not getting more info on the Ikari/Hime-sama situation. "Touji is probably right, just have to accept it," Kensuke didn't really like the idea but what can he do? The impossible dream girl was either with or going to be with the one person Kensuke identified with. Guess that was wrong, he was just going to have to find a new way.

"I'm home," Kensuke announced his arrival. The walk was long and boring, and nobody was there to greet him. Food was waiting for him for supper, his computer was there as well. Settling in for a long evening of television, games, and internet sleuthing, Kensuke waited for his phone to chime. Doing a few checks on sites that focused on Nerv, Kensuke did find some info on the volcano mission. Nothing major but a few neat photos. After eating the overly salty meal, Touji finally contacted him and the two played around online for a few hours. No word from Shinji, but there is always tomorrow.

Notes

Moving the relationship aspect further as I feel that would be something that would happen. For a long running story I guess its alright to drag out the 'will they/won't they' aspect, but this (and in the original source) isn't really a 'won't they' type of thing. Things are going to progress faster now as all the key agents are in place and things ready to exploded
