Donald Ressler lay dead still behind Liz with his hand on her waist waiting for his mother to get on her shoes and leave for her walk. He felt like a teenager again, hiding what was going on with his girlfriend from his mother as she walked past the living room to get her cup of tea before she went to bed.
Liz woke him 20 minutes ago and they had started to make slow, incredibly quiet love when the bedroom door opened and Lisa Ressler tip-toed out to get on her shoes and jacket. His mom was a morning walker and today it looked like that was happening at 6 am. Liz wiggled her rear end slightly and he reacted by gripping her waist telling her to stop teasing him at this moment.
This was their second time since going to sleep last night that they carefully and painstakingly quietly made love in the living room on the air mattress under some blankets. His mom grabbed his second set of keys and quietly opened the door and closed it, locking it behind her.
"Don…" Liz whispered.
"Shhh," he said as he listened for his mom's footfalls going farther down the hallway.
When he heard the doorway to the stairs open and close, he started to move inside Liz again.
He leaned down and whispered low and growly into Liz's ear. "Go for it."
The first time that night Liz had literally been biting a pillow to stifle any moans as they made love and she had been doing that again for the last twenty minutes but could now let loose.
Fifteen minutes later, a very noodle-like Liz was laying huffing and satisfied as she wiped at her forehead and Ressler was spraying the room with air freshener to make it not smell of sex.
"You seem to have a 'hide sex from mom' routine down pat," Liz chuckled as she watched him do this.
"I had my fair share of secret sexcapades as a teenager," Ressler chuckled, getting back into their air mattress bed in the middle of the living room.
"Do tell," Liz said as she wrapped her arms around his neck and snuggled into him.
"Mae Ponticke and I used to pretend to be super into Star Wars, always having these re-watch marathons laying on the couch covered in blankets, when really, we were naked from the waist down almost the entire time and not paying any attention to the movies at all," Ressler said.
Liz laughed at this teen version of Ressler, having sex with his girlfriend on the couch while Darth Vader tried to destroy everything in his wake. Liz yawned and snuggled into his frame a little closer.
"You feeling better?" Ressler asked her.
She nodded against him slowly and he could tell she was drifting off to sleep. The fact that she had spoken to him afterwards before knocking off had been an improvement. Last night he and his mother had argued about the air mattress and who was sleeping on it. She wanted to be the one who stayed on it so Liz, who was pregnant, had a proper bed to sleep in. He had argued that they were perfectly fine in the living room. And when they came out of the bedroom in heated discussion, Liz was asleep on the air mattress with the lights on all around her and the TV still going. He and his mom had laughed at the image, and she'd relented and taken their bed and kissed him goodnight on the cheek.
Ressler wasn't surprised at how well Liz and his mom got along. They were laughing and teasing each other like old friend's by dinner time and all of Liz's nerves about meeting his mother and what she may think of her were gone.
Ressler heard Liz's soft snores and smiled to himself as he slipped out of their make-shift bed and padded to the washroom to have a quick shower before work. When he came out in his towel, his mom was back and reading in their bedroom.
"Hey ma, is it okay if I get my suit and…"
"Of course, sweetie," Lisa said from her place reading on the bed. "How did you and Liz sleep last night?"
Ressler walked into the bedroom and started to grab underwear, a shirt, tie, a suit and anything else he'd need.
"Really good, it was very comfortable," he said over his shoulder.
"Really? I can't imagine something just filled with air was…"
"It really was ma, don't worry about us," Ressler said. "Nice walk this morning?"
"It was, I love all the new shops that have gone up in your neighborhood recently," Lisa smiled at him. "Oh, and this was under your door."
She handed Don a sheet of paper that indicated the unit next to him was for sale and the building owner wanted to give owners first right of refusal to buy the unit before it went to market.
"Yeah, it's becoming gentrified," Ressler said absently as he read. "I was smart to buy when it was not as nice."
"It looks like you'll have a new neighbor," Lisa said.
"Mrs. Wong is moving?" Ressler asked as he read.
"Isn't she quite old?" Lisa asked.
"God, she'd got to be close to 90," Ressler noted. That was one thing he liked about Mrs. Wong, she was practically deaf at her age and never complained about the noise. "Her unit looks like it's even bigger than mine. I didn't know that."
"I read you could expand with just some paperwork filed with the city," Lisa said. "If you don't want to move, buying her unit may be a smart move. Because Donnie, I know I said it yesterday, but a little baby takes up a lot of space with all of their things."
Don nodded. The unit was actually ridiculously cheap considering the gentrification and the current DC market. Maybe they could expand and stay right where they were?
"We have a week to consider…" Don said as he finished reading the paper.
"Would the building owner have made the same offer to the unit on the other side of Mrs. Wong as well?" Lisa asked.
"Maybe," Ressler's brow furrowed. Suddenly, he didn't think they had a week. Clark, the white house aid on the other side of Mrs. Wong, may jump at this offer as well.
Ressler walked from the bedroom to the living room and, placing down all his clothing items, gently jostled Liz until she yawned and rolled over looking at him.
"Hey, you need to get up for work," he said as he leaned over and kissed her softly on the lips.
"Bagels," she said with a smile.
They had picked up her favorite bagels from a shop yesterday and she obviously had them on her mind.
"If you get started on the bagels, I'll get dressed and finish them," Ressler said. "And I want you to look at this and tell me what you think."
Liz took the sheet of paper from him and started to read it as he took off his towel and started to get dressed next to her.
"Wait, we could expand?" Liz asked.
"Yeah," Ressler said as he pulled up his pants. "The wall all along that end of the living room and kitchen would be taken out. Her apartment mirrors mine but has two bedrooms on the other side and a larger storage closet and laundry closet from the looks of it."
"So, the living room would be twice the size and the bedrooms and washroom, I get all that, but what about the second kitchen?" Liz asked sitting up and throwing her legs over the side.
"I guess we take it out and have…a dining room?" Ressler asked. "Look at the price, Liz."
"I know, I think it's a mistake," Liz chuckled, standing and handing him back the sheet before she hit the washroom.
"Good morning, Liz!" Lisa called from inside the bedroom.
"Morning Lisa!" Liz called back before she shut the washroom door.
Ressler looked back down at the sheet and wondered if it was a mistake.
He looked at the wall separating their apartments and started to think about the ease of taking over that unit and making this a very large and useable place for them to live as a family. A house was definitely out of their price range unless they wanted to live in the suburbs and, even then, it was getting ridiculously expensive there too. And the suburbs would mean a long commute for the two of them each day and he knew, especially with the long hours they kept, it would wear on them quickly.
The washroom door opened, and Liz padded toward the kitchen to get the bagels toasting.
Lisa came out of the bedroom as Don was doing up his shirt.
"I think you better see about it before someone else does," Lisa said, opening their fridge to find orange juice for everyone. "Unless you want a house…"
"I'm not sure I do," Liz said honestly as she popped Don's bagel down in the toaster. "After everything that's happened, I feel incredibly safe here and I'm not sure I'm a gardener or a street party sort of mom."
Ressler laughed at her assessment of herself and walked with his tie over his shoulder into the kitchen to turn on the coffee maker.
"Your father bought our house when it was a wreck," Lisa said. "Oh my god, three years of slow, painful renovations when he wasn't working…"
"Yeah, I remember you getting all antsy every time he suggested doing something to the house," Ressler said.
"I lived in dust and tarps and open walls for years when we first got married," Lisa said. "It was all we could afford on his salary, and we ended up with a great house, in the end. Nice neighborhood. Nothing fancy, probably described as a little rough around the edges, but it made my boys tough."
Ressler laughed and just as he was about to talk, Liz held half a buttered bagel up for him and he took a bite and started to chew as she grabbed his tie and tied it for him. Ressler smiled, he secretly quite liked it when Liz did little things like this to take care of him.
Lisa watched the scene before her in the kitchen and smiled. Her son was domesticated now, whether he realized it or not, and she adored that. She had been waiting for one of her boys to get married and settle down and started to worry, after Audrey, that it would never happen. And yet, here Donnie was laughing and eating and having his tie tied for him in his kitchen while they spoke about expanding the condo to make room for their baby.
"Thanks," Ressler said as Liz finished his tie.
She got up on her toes and kissed him gently on the lips before she reached for the rest of his bagel and placed it in her mouth, walking away eating it.
"Hey, isn't that mine?" He called after her.
"You can have the fresh one in the toaster," Liz called over her shoulder. "The baby wants this one."
Ressler laughed. She had been saying that a lot lately when she ate. Apparently, the baby wanted everything that was on his plate as well when they ate most meals. Not only was he going to be sleep deprived from a horny pregnant woman, he was going t be emaciated from her stealing all of his food.
"Donnie…" Lisa said from the living room as she looked at him smiling.
"What ma?" Ressler asked her with a smile.
"You two…" she said as she covered her heart with her one hand.
Ressler ducked his head in embarrassment and turned a little pink. His mom obviously was happy with him and Liz. And, as much as that wasn't necessary, it was appreciated.
He grabbed his coffee and walked around to sit with his mom and have breakfast, bringing her a toasted bagel as well.
"What are you up to today?" Ressler asked.
"I thought I'd do some shopping and cook you both lasagna for dinner," Lisa said.
"Ma, you don't…"
"I want to Donnie," Lisa said as she covered his hand with her own. "I want to spend time with you both and it's not the same always sitting in a restaurant."
"Fine," Ressler nodded. "I can leave you some money to…"
"It's lasagna Donnie, not some fancy food," Lisa scoffed as she saw Liz walked out dressed. Her pants were sitting below her belly to accommodate for the baby like many women did before they went maternity clothes shopping. "Liz, do you want lasagna for dinner tonight?"
"I'd love it," Liz smiled as she took what was left of Ressler's bagel and started to eat it.
"Wonderful," Lisa smiled at her as she watched her son get up to toast another bagel.
"And can you call about the place next store and see if those numbers are legit?" Liz asked him as she ate his bagel. "Because if they are, I can get a small mortgage on it and pay some of it down right away."
Ressler looked at her perplexed.
"I've been sitting on some money since Sam died that I just kept in an account," Liz explained. "It would pay for over half the unit and give us a really small mortgage that I could pay."
"You're serious?" Ressler asked as he waited for his third bagel of the morning to pop up.
"I am," Liz said. "I think Lisa is right, we need more room and I like it here and so do you. I don't want to commute for hours a day."
He nodded. If he ever wanted any commitment from her, this was it. She and he were going to own a condo together, in pieces, but all the same.
"Okay, I'll call and make sure they didn't mess up the numbers and offer the asking?"
Liz nodded and drank his orange juice and then drank hers.
"This is so exciting!" Lisa clapped. "You'll hate the reno, so hire a professional and get it done as quickly as possible."
"You ready to go?" He asked Liz. "You'll need to drive so I can eat."
"Yeah, sorry about that," Liz smiled at him and blushed slightly. "But you know how much I love those bagels…"
He laughed and kissed the side of her head. "I'm fine with it, Liz."
"Lisa, I'll try and get home mid-afternoon so you're not by yourself all day," Liz smiled at her. "Maybe you can go for a walk again with me and I can burn off some of the bagels I inhaled this morning."
Lisa laughed. "I'd love to honey."
Ressler kissed his mom on the cheek, and they left to go to work.
When Liz turned into a wooded park and not the Post Office Ressler looked at her confused.
"Liz, what…?"
"You've got a nice big back seat Ressler," Liz said with a smirk.
He looked at her surprised.
"I need to get through until whenever your mom goes out or goes to sleep," Liz admitted as she parked the car in a secluded corner. "And this time I don't have to be quiet."
Ressler chuckled and watched as she climbed into the back seat and then beckoned him to join her.
"Why…" Ressler started as he tried to climb back with his long legs. "…do I suddenly feel like I'm eighteen again having sex with Annette Bergan in the back of my mom's station wagon?"
Liz chuckled before she captured his mouth with hers and started to undo the tie she so meticulously had done up recently.
"Amateur," he said as he placed a hand over hers and stopped her from undoing the tie further. "Car sex in the city involves the least amount of clothing removal as possible so if a cop comes by you don't have much to pull on."
"Says the man who's had a lot of it?" Liz asked him with a quirked eyebrow.
He smirked. "You grew up in the sticks. You could have probably ran across an entire field naked and no one would have seen you."
Liz laughed, he was probably right.
He leaned forward and between sultry kissed whispered. "Let me show you how it's done in the city."
