Thank you for coming back!

This chapter has medical stuff in it. It's not anything too graphic, but I mention surgeries, Wyatt is hurt but he's going to get better now… no worries, Rey and Ben get better too.

I need to thank my nurse friend Tracy. She made sure that I got all this right. And Notanislander! She's always a big help.

Let me know what you think!

"Rey?" Ben doesn't even recognize his own voice. Horns are beeping, someone is calling for him but the one he needs to talk to the most, isn't answering him.

He can't feel her anymore…

"Daddy?" Someone cries. He has to get to them but when he tries to move… It's like a weight has settled across his chest. He can turn his head and he looks to where Rey is.

A smile appears because she looks alright, even if her eyes are closed. Her hand is still on his leg, but then he notices that she's a lot closer than she was before.

Why is there blood on the side of her face?

Why are her lips blue?

A harsh cry escapes his chest rendering all other sounds around him silent.

"Ben?" He hears coming from his other side. He tries to turn his head but can't. But he'd know that voice anywhere.

"Dad?"

"Be still son, the paramedics are on the way. Don't move."

"Check on the kids-"

"They're awake- Wyatt-"

"What's wrong with Wyatt?" Ben whispers, trying to get to his son, his baby boy…

"Don't try to move Ben," Han murmurs. "The paramedics are already here and they are helping him first."

"What happened to Wyatt?"

"They're awake," Han says. Ben knows that he's avoiding his question. "They want to get out of the car, but Leia won't let them. I put out a fire with the fire extinguisher I keep in the car."

"Check on Rey. Her lips are blue.'' He can still hear someone crying but he can't move or even if he could, he can't take his eyes off his bride.

He watches his father's hand reach for Rey. That's when he realizes that he still has her hand in his. The best he can, he manages to turn her hand over and feel for her pulse.

It's faint, but still there.

Years of working in ERs kick in. "Hey Siri?" He calls out. He hears the familiar chime that indicates that the AI is listening. "Call Armitage Hux."

Even though the Land Rover is totaled, the radio and Bluetooth miraculously still work. The phone rings and when he expects it to go to voicemail instead, he hears, "Solo, this better be-"

"I was just in a wreck. The whole family is with me. One ambulance is already here, more are on the way."

"Ah hell. Well, it's good that I'm working."

"When we get there-" his voice cracks and he can feel his mom's touch on his arm. "Call Dr. Imwe. Rey's unconscious. Dad won't answer me about the kids, call Dr. Kalonia for them."

"What about you?"

"I'm not sure, I can't feel anything-" he sees the flashing lights. "They're here. Hopefully I'll see you soon."

"Godspeed, Solo." Then click.

"Doctor Solo?" Comes from outside the Land Rover. "My name is Eli and I'm a paramedic. Can you tell me how you're feeling?"

"I need you to take care of my wife and the kids first." Ben tries to turn his head but it hurts too much.

"The kids are being taken care of and we are working with the firemen on getting your wife out."

"I can't turn my head. I think I have whiplash."

"I'll get a neck brace and the board." He can hear Eli's footsteps as he walks away.

Rey still hasn't moved the couple of minutes that feels like hours. His finger is still on her pulse point on her wrist.

Another paramedic appears behind Rey. "Dr. Solo, my name is Millie and I'm going to get your wife out of here and to the hospital. Can you tell me what her name is?"

"It's Rey Holdo- well Solo now."

"How long have you two been married?"

"Only a couple of weeks." Ben grins. "We eloped."

He watches them get the door open with a horrible metal-on-metal creaking sound. Millie cuts the seatbelt. Where it was holding Rey, it slides down but she doesn't move. A neck brace appears, and Millie secures it around Rey's neck.

"Is she bleeding anywhere?" Ben whispers, unable to speak any louder because he can feel his tears.

"From what I can see, Dr. Solo, no. But you know as well as I do that as soon as I get her on the board that could change." Millie meets his eyes. "This is not my first wreck. But I will say this and you know this too. It could have been a lot worse. Thank goodness you weren't on the interstate, and the speed limit is 40 through here. The kids have already gone to the hospital and yes, your parents went with them. Dr. Hux has already called to see where you two are. We're going to work on getting her out of here and Eli will be back with the board for you."

"Dr. Solo," Eli says beside him. He feels his seatbelt being cut then it loosens around him. "I've got your neck brace." Gentle hands put the piece of plastic around his neck. Eli moves into his line of sight. "I'm going to check for your pulse now, alright."

On the other side of him, he can hear Millie and someone else talking, doing the same procedure to Rey.

He just didn't realize how much he'd miss Rey's touch when they check for her pulse.

That's when he lets his tears fall.

The rest is blur as they ease him from the wreck. He hears someone calling his name, but he can't keep his eyes open anymore…

As a doctor, Ben's been able to put himself in his patient's shoes all throughout his career.

His teachers called it empathy.

He has plenty of it. That's why his patients keep coming back to him. That's why so many cried when he said he was leaving his old practice to move back home.

But now, strapped down on a gurney in the back of an ambulance with oxygen under his nose, Eli or someone starting an IV and the only words that can come out of his mouth…

Where is Rey? What's wrong with Wyatt?

When all he wants to do is demand and fight and fix everything. The rage he feels down deep inside is nothing like what he's ever felt before. His eyes close. He should tell them his head is busting, the pain so bad he wants to cry.

Still nothing like the pain of not knowing.

He does something that he hasn't done in years… he starts to pray. He's not sure who's listening anymore, but he can't stop whispering, "Just let them be alright. Don't take them from me. Please-"

The ambulance comes to a stop. The shadows dance across his closed eyelids, and he knows that they're at the hospital. He hears the creek that runs along the backside of the Emergency entrance parking lot as the doors creak open.

The hot asphalt smell of every hospital parking lot fills his nose. He manages to open his eyes. Two EMTs run past his ambulance pushing a gurney.

"Who is that?" He growls trying to get up…

"Dr. Solo, you are still strapped down. We are taking you in now." One of his EMTs says above his head.

"Dr. Solo?" Kaydel the ER nurse appears at the end of the gurney. "What in the hell happened to you?"

"Don't worry about me. I'm sure that was my wife that was just wheeled in and-" he pauses, his tears making his throat think. "And my son, Wyatt. Something's wrong with him."

Kaydel nods to one of the EMTs. "Let's get you out of here and see what's going on."

Metal breaks click loudly and he moves. Kay helps the EMTs get him out of the truck. They gently put him on the concrete and roll him in. Another gurney rushes past him. "Who's that?" he asks. And in his heart, he knows. "Kay?" she meets his eyes as she hooks up his IV. "Will you go check on-"

"I will.'' She touches his shoulder like they are old friends. He supposes they are, working in the ER together will do that to a person.

They immediately put him in the first bay. Hux parts the curtain and Eli starts filling Hux in. Kay comes back in and whispers, "Dr. Kalonia is with your son and Dr. Imwe is with your wife."

He can't stop his tears this time. "Thank you," he mutters as Kaydel pats his arm. Hux on the other side says, "I need to check something Solo. Can you open your eyes?" Ben tries, but the more his body realizes that it's safe, the more it wants to go to sleep.

A bright light, then Hux demands, "Get this man to radiology. I need a CT scan."

Unable to keep them open any longer, his eyes close.

"Mr. and Mrs. Beckett?" Amilyn and Tobias stand up. "Can you come with me?"

They follow Kaydel through the swinging doors. When they got the call that there was a wreck, Tobias was the one who started crying, while Ami drove them to the hospital. Poe was already there and he waved them into the girl's curtained off bay in the ER unit.

Dr. Hux carefully explained that while they would have some bruises, the worst for Juniper and Greer might be the nightmares. And to reassure them as much as they needed to that Mama, Ben and Wyatt were going to be alright, if he had to do it all himself.

"Are you sure you don't want us to take the girls?" Amilyn volunteers. "I know they need all of us right now."

"Ami, Tobias, stay here with Rey. She needs you more right now. I'll take the girls home." Poe reassures them. "Just keep me updated, please."

"Daddy?" Greer cries. "Casey got blood on him."

"I know Mi Amor. We'll get him cleaned up as soon as we get home." Poe says, then turns his attention back to Amilyn and Tobias. "Where's Ben and his boys?"

Tobias shakes his head. Poe nods but then he follows his ex-father-in-law out to the waiting room where the girls can't hear them. "All we know is the girls are ok. Rey is getting a CT scan. Ben is waiting his turn. Wyatt, Ben's son isn't doing too good."

"Oh no. Is Han and Leia with him?"

"I'm sure they are. We were waiting to see what they said about the girls then go check on everyone else."

"Daddy?" Juniper calls out.

"Coming Sweetie."

Amilyn watches as Poe gathers the girls and helps them out the door. As much as she wants to go cry somewhere, she looks for the nurse that brought them back. "I need to check on my daughter."

"Of course. She's still getting her CT scan. Mr. Solo is with Dr. Solo's other son-"

"Can we see them?" Tobias asks.

"Let's go see.'' Kaydel leads them to another curtained off bay.

Ami pulls the fabric aside and Jack, even though he doesn't smile at first, his face lights up with recognition. "Meemee? Pop-pop?"

"Hey Sweetie," Amilyn says, as she walks to the other side of the bed, opposite of where Han sits. "How are you feeling?"

"Sore. Where's Wyatt? And Dad? And Rey?"

Amilyn doesn't miss that he's wearing a hospital gown. I wonder if he had blood on him from the wreck…

"I'm not sure. Where's Lala?" Amilyn asks, not sure what to tell the young man.

Han shakes his head and stands. He motions for them to follow him. "I'll be right back, kid."

"Ok Papa."

Han leads them to the other side of the unit. "Wyatt is in surgery-" Ami gasps and Tobias grunts as their tears start. "He had a big piece of glass in his chest." Han stops so he can dig his handkerchief out of this pocket to wipe his nose. "Collapsed lung. He'll be in ICU for a couple of days."

Ami opens her arms to give one of her oldest friends a hug then Tobias hugs them both. "That poor little soul." Ami pulls away so she can wipe her own eyes. "Where's Leia?"

"In the surgery waiting room."

"Honey," Ami says to Tobias. "Why don't you stay with Han? I'm going to go find Rey and Leia? And they said Ben is waiting too, so I'll track him down too."

The men nod and Ami goes looking for someone to help.

Luckily, she finds Kaydel at the nurses' station. Kay is able to call for Ami and Rey is indeed out of the CT scan and they are looking for her mother or Ben. They found Ben quickly, but still needed Ami. It only takes a minute for the orderly to find her.

"Dr. Imwe needs to talk to you. Can you come with me?"

"Of course." They walk down several hallways before the orderly stops. He pulls a key from his pocket and opens a heavy wooden door. Ami must have a questioning look because he tells her, "This is the back way into the nurse's station in surgery." They round a corner. "This is the surgeon. Dr. Imwe, this is Mrs. Solo's mother. Her husband is unable to sign for her."

"Oh no, does she have to have surgery?"

"She does. She hasn't woken up yet, but from her scans, her spleen is ruptured." Dr. Imwe points to something Amilyn can't quite make out on the scan. "The surgery will be Laparoscopic and while her recovery time will be sooner, I'm going to put her in ICU for a day or so because of the wreck."

"Alright, where do I sign?" As she writes, she asks, "Where is Dr. Ben Solo?"

"Dr. Solo- Baze? Do you have news on him?"

The orderly nods. "He's in the middle of his scan. I can take you to his mother."

"If you don't mind."

Brbrbrbrbr

"Dr. Solo?"

Ben tries to open his eyes. But between the light and his head it hurts too much. "Can you turn off the light?" He whispers.

"Of course," he hears a voice he doesn't recognize. At once it softens and he's able to open his eyes. "Can I have some Tylenol and something for the nausea? But I don't want to sleep-"

"But if you can, it might be better to go back to sleep." That voice he recognizes. Aunt Ami.

"Where's Rey?" He tries to get up even if it means he's going to lose everything in his stomach.

"She's in surgery." Hand push him back to the bed. "Leia is with Wyatt, and I'm going to stay here with you."

Tears run down his cheeks. His wife is in surgery, he still doesn't know what's wrong with Wyatt and he can't go to either one of them.

He's not a good husband.

He's not a good daddy.

He's not a good doctor.

"Benjamin Solo, stop it," Ami fusses. He must have said all that out loud. "You have to get better so you can be who they need." Cool hands wipe his forehead. "Go to sleep. The nurse is here with what you requested."

He can feel something cold push into his vein where they must have put the IV. He can't keep his eyes open anymore even as he whispers, "Rey. I'm coming. Wyatt, I love you son-"

"Mrs. Solo?" she hears as she tries to open her eyes. "How are you feeling?"

She's finally able to open her eyes. A bright light shines overhead. "Why is the light so bright? Can I go back to sleep?"

"She's not ready to wake up yet. Let's move her to ICU. We'll wake her up tomorrow-"

The sweet darkness of sleep comes to claim her again.

"She's out of surgery. So is Wyatt. They are both in ICU."

"What about Ben? How's my Grandson?" Nana Padme asks.

"They put him in a room. He has a concussion," Leia exhales.

"How are you dear?"

"As soon as I get everyone back home, I'll be alright."

"Where's Jack?"

"He's at the house with Han."

"I'll call Han and tell him to bring me Jack. Then he can come to you. Or you come home and get some rest."

"I can't leave Wyatt, mom. Let's get everyone through the night, then we'll figure out who goes where."

"Call me if anything changes."

"I promise," Leia says. "Love you Mama."

"Love you too, Love."

"Rey just got out of surgery. She's still pretty out of it so they are taking her to ICU."

"Alright," Poe says. "What do I tell the kids?"

"Just that she's out of surgery. And she's asleep. The doctor says that she's going to be alright. We'll tell them more when we can," Tobias offers.

"How's Ben? How's his little boy?"

"Ben is being kept overnight. He has a pretty bad concussion and a bruised spine. And of course, whiplash. Wyatt, bless him, a piece of the window punctured his lung. He was in surgery for two hours. Leia is sitting with him in ICU."

"Oh damn." Poe exhales, "Do you need me to bring food? Anything? Zorii's here now and I can come back-"

"We all need to get some rest right now. Call me in the morning."

"Who's with Rey now?"

"I am."

It's still a struggle to open his eyes, but at least the headache is gone. And the nausea, thank goodness. The room is still dark. He tries to move his head, but the pain in his neck… when did that start? He brings his hand up to rub it, and that's when he feels the neck brace.

"Whiplash. Is your neck hurting?"

"Hux? Is that you?"

"I was taking a break and came by to see you. Your-"

"Mother-in-law," he hears Aunt Ami say.

"Is nicer than I imagine most mother-in-law's to be."

"Well I'm also his God-mother and he's called me Aunt Ami since he could say the words."

"But his wife isn't actually blood related?" Hux asks. Ben has to smile when he hears the confusion in his voice.

"Oh no. Even if Ben and I were, Rey, his wife is adopted."

"Anymore adopted daughters out there? I still need a wife." Hux says half-jokingly.

"What happened to Gwen?" Ben rumbles.

"She decided that Carolina was no longer on her mind and left for the hills of California."

"I'm sorry, man,'' Ben murmurs. "Speaking of my wife, where is she? And," he suddenly remembers everything that happened. He can feel the IV still in his arm, and the different monitors strapped to him. He still pulls away the covers to get up. "Wyatt. He needs me."

"He does." Hux heads for the door. From what Ben can see, he motions for someone who must be sitting at the nurse's station. "The nurses have been waiting for you to wake up so they can take you to them. I even brought your extra scrub pants out of your locker. Do you think you can stand the overhead lights now?"

Ben nods and Ami gets up to go turn them on. One of the nurses comes in and Ami steps out into the hallway. Between Hux and the nurse, they get him dressed and into a wheelchair in a matter of minutes.

"There you go," Hux says to Ami. "You'd think we were professionals or something like that."

"I like him," Ami chuckles.

"Don't tell him stuff like that. It will go to his head," Ben quips then he grows serious. "Who's awake? Rey or Wyatt?"

"They are keeping Wyatt sedated," Ami tells him. "And I haven't heard from Tobias, so Rey might still be out too."

"Let's go see her first then," Ben says.

Hux does the honor of pushing him down the hallway. "With Wyatt and his chest tube, they will keep him until the air is gone."

"Was there any blood?'' Ben whispers. He hates that this happened. His sweet baby boy is broken because of some dumb ass who was in a hurry.

"Yes, but he did have a five-inch piece of glass through his chest wall." Hux stops before the silver locked doors of the ICU. Ben touches the intercom.

"Can I help you?"

"This is Dr. Solo."

"We've been expecting you," The voice says before a buzzer echoes through the empty hallway.

Ben glances at the clock above the nurse's station. "It's three am?"

"It is," the nurse answers. "My name is Delly and your wife just woke up. Your son was brought here a little bit ago. Dr. Kalonia wants us to keep him sedated until tomorrow after she's made rounds."

"Let me see Rey first. Is my mother still with Wyatt?"

"She is, and the last I checked she's still asleep. Mr. Beckett woke up when Mrs. Solo did about thirty minutes ago."

"Thank you," Ben mutters as Ami pushes him into ICU one.

The only light in the room comes from the wall lamp over the head of the bed. Tubes are everywhere, but that's to be expected. But the one thing Ben looks for also looks for him.

His wife's bright hazel eyes.

He loves how they crinkle at the corners as she whispers, "Ben."

Tobias stands up, and Ami pushes him to the side of the bed. "You're alive."

"Of course, I am. You can't get rid of me that easily," she chuckles then moans. "Crap that hurts!"

"Solo, I'm needed back in Emergency," Hux says behind him. "Hello, there. I'm Dr. Armitage Hux. I'm glad that you're awake."

"I wish we were meeting under better circumstances, but it's nice to meet you too," Rey exhales.

"Hux?" Ben says.

"Solo?"

Ben would turn but he can't. So, he says, "Thank you."

"Of course, but let's not do it again? Alright? Maybe next time we meet, it will be over dinner at someone's house?"

"It's a date," Rey mutters. She waits for the red-headed doctor to disappear before she reaches out for Ben. He scoots closer so he can finally touch her. "How bad is it?"

"I have a concussion, and whiplash. I think my spine is bruised but I'll get better. Have they told you what happened?"

"Just that I was in surgery. What did they have to do?"

"They removed your spleen," he says. He knows he'll have to explain later what all that means. "Wyatt had to have surgery too."

He can see the tears in her eyes as she whispers, "Wyatt? What- why?"

"He had a five-inch piece of glass in his chest." He pauses to listen to her gasp. "He's here in ICU also. I'm hoping that he'll only have to keep the tube in for a day or so."

"You have to go see him-I know he's scared to death."

"They are keeping him sedated for now, plus Mama's with him. Then Poe came and got the girls."

"Oh good." she squeezes his hand. "Go check on him. I'll be right here." Ben pauses, but she whispers, "go see him. I'm alright, Dad's here." Tobias grunts from the chair that makes an uncomfortable bed in the corner. "Then you look like you need to go lay back down in your bed."

"I'll come back before I go to my room."

"I love you," she says, trying to smile.

"Are you hurting?" He asks.

He recognizes her smile for what it is. A brave mask trying to hide what she's really feeling. "Yes?"

"I'll tell the nurse." He says wanting nothing more than to hold her and Wyatt both until they're not hurting anymore. "I'll be right back."

"Are you ready?" Ami asks just to be sure.

"Let's go see Wyatt." He watches Rey, who watches him roll out of the room.

The hallway lights are dim but the trip is shorter than he thought it was going to be, when Ami just rolls him next door. These lights are on low and Ben can see his mom curled in the same chair Tobias was in Rey's room.

He allows himself a deep breath before he looks at the little boy lying in the bed. "Can you get me closer?" he whispers.

Ami eases his chair to the side of Wyatt's bed. Ben reaches for the bed control and pushes the button that lowers the entire bed. As it comes down from the height the nurses had it set on to make working on his son easier, Ben looks.

His first semester of medical school all they did was learn how to do a physical exam. Even now he can hear Professor Windu telling the class, "You first examine each patient with your eyes. What color is their skin? How do their eyes look? Their nails? Even the luster of their hair."

As a father and as a dad, the first thing Ben notices is how Wyatt's mouth has a faint tint of blue around his lips.

Immediately he rings the nurse's station. Delly comes rushing in. "Dr. Solo?"

"Have his lips been this blue since he was brought back from surgery?" He whispers?

"No, sir." she twists the oxygen knob before she starts checking the tubes going to and from his little body. He hears the hiss that fills the room. Both he and Delly smile as they watch the color come back into Wyatt's face. "I'm glad you came in here when you did," she says with a grateful smile.

"This is my youngest, and I'd be lost without him," Ben murmurs before his tears start. No one says anything but someone tucks a tissue in his hand while Mama comes around to his wheelchair.

"He's going to be alright, all of you will be," Leia whispers in his ear. "You have to be."
