"It's not Weird." Hiccup challenged.

"You know what? There's a whole group of people behind you, why don't you ask them if it's weird. Surely all, or at least most of them have or had Husbands or wives." Toothless said smugly.

"Okay but there's got to be some stakes."

"Like what?" Toothless asked. "There isn't anything we need from each other. Like there isn't anything we're disagreeing on that we could have this settle. And even something like 'whoever wins gets to make the other do something and they can't say no to it.' Cause let's be real with ourselves here, it wouldn't take much convincing by either of us to get the other to do something for or with them.

Like with a lot less convincing than I'd like to admit, you could ask me to mate with you right here, right now."

"And you say I'm the horny one." Hiccup laughed.

"You are." Toothless sniped. "Dragons don't mate all year round like humans do."

"Is that a bad thing? Do you not want to…?"

"NO!" Toothless interrupted. "I mean yes, no. Whatever, I do want to do that with you. All the time. It's fantastic. It's great going from just a normal day to having fun with you at random. Trust me there won't be a time that you suggest that we find somewhere private and I won't jump at the chance. It's just different from what everyone one else experiences. Which is what the book you write about me would be called." Toothless chuckled. "So it's just something I've come to expect from being with you. At this point I don't think I could go back to only mating during mating season. Not that I did, I guess. But you know what I mean.

It's no wonder all the males get so aggressive around that time."

"So what if I wasn't around, you think you'd get aggressive like that?"

"Knowing what I know now? I'd rip someone's head off at the slightest chance at mating. I mean come on. It has to be one of the greatest feelings of all time. And falling in love…" Toothless looked softly at Hiccup. "It's like you said. Without you, it, it feels like dying. Like the person you love is what gives you breath. Is what moves you forward." Toothless paused and reflected. "If you were to die." He shivered. "I'd kill thousands and thousands of people to fall in love like this again. There's no way I could be without you." His words getting ever quieter as the words came out.

"Toothless?" Hiccup asked, concerned.

"Sorry, I didn't mean for it to sound like that. Sorta. You're my world. I have found something so precious to me that even thinking about losing it sends me into a panic." Toothless leaned down and gave a small lick to Hiccup's forehead. "Something tells me you're just the same, you know."

"You think? I don't know if I could do something like that."

"I think that if I died, you wouldn't sit around. You'd do something, try to get me back somehow. I think that you'd go as far as make deals with the gods. Maybe even kill one."

"I couldn't do that."

"You have a lot more power than you think. If there's one thing about you that I've always found interesting, it's that you fight up, or down. And your want to live keeps you from giving up. Plus getting me back would probably help too, I'd hope."

"What do you mean by fight up, or down?" Hiccup asked.

"Well it's like a way of thinking, and how you react to it. Like when you and I train together. You consider me dangerous and know that I won't go easy on you. You may know that I won't kill you but you also know that I'm not afraid to seriously injure you. How many broken fingers or toes have you had? Or even arms, legs, and noses. How many times have you split your head open? And yet you get up. You don't complain and you fight your heart out until our session is over or your body gives out. Your biggest strength in a fight is that blood doesn't scare you, pain doesn't scare you. Popping your broken fingers back into place just so you can make a fist again; running around on broken toes, foot or ankle; Lungs burning and full of smoke, throat closing up; head pounding and blood dripping into your eyes. Nothing stops you. That's how you fight up. You don't play any games and you push yourself to the edge and beyond. It's extremely impressive actually.

The issue is fighting down. It's hard for you to do that here. Given that the people here are armed to the teeth, including the teeth. But it's when you think your opponent is weaker than you, you also become weaker. Like let's say you and your father were to fight. You probably think that you dad is a tough opponent but it's just that you're fighting at his level and not your own."

"You think I'm better at fighting than my dad?"

"Oh yeah. You're way beyond him."

"But how? No one's beaten him, not even dragons."

"You act as though that doesn't apply to you, Hiccup."

"Does it not? I've been beaten by you, Color, Dusty, and a few others."

"Losing a fight isn't being beaten. And surely your dad's had a few people, or dragons who have gotten the better of him. There's no doubt in my mind that he's had a few close calls that he doesn't want people to know about. Which for him isn't a bad thing. He has a reputation to uphold. But when that happens he probably doesn't learn from it.

And that's the difference between you and him. You are unique in this in two ways. Firstly, you have no shame when it comes to losses. When you do lose you almost always take from it. Which leads into the second thing, and that's you being you.

You are by far the smartest thing anyone will ever come across. I'm considered one of the smartest dragon species, if not the smartest, but I don't hold a candle to you. Not that I can hold one anyway. Your ability to retain information, and then apply it, is your biggest strength. It's what makes you a great leader, and what makes you great at big picture ideas, and coming up with plans. So then that's also your biggest strength in a fight. You can recall situations, adapt it to your current issue and have a complete plan nearly instantly.

To put it another way. That you can win fights against me, against Color or Dusty, or whoever, makes you leaps and bounds more dangerous than any human. You are a real threat to anyone dumb enough to go up against you.

You are through and through a complete monster to fight against. And you should be proud of that." Toothless smiled.
