Chapter 5: Why Is My Roommate A Cop?

Elsa stared at her boss with her mouth gaping wide open. He couldn't be serious. He could not be serious. Her working with…. him?! This was not happening. How could she work with that pretentious douchbag? Sure, she had somehow managed to work with him recently but it had taken all of her self-control not to do something or say something she would regret later.

"Yes," North leaned back in his chair," I think this would be a great opportunity for you two to learn something from each other."

Elsa was a second away from quitting her job right then and there but the thought of Jack winning by default kept her glued to her chair. Forcing herself to take in a deep breath and remain calm, she put a smile on her face.

"So, what's the plan?" she asked North in the most pleasant voice she could muster.

"That is for you and Jack to figure out," North replied. "Now, I expect you two to work together civilly," he placed extra emphasis on that last word which made Elsa gulp slightly. He obviously knew about their history. "You are on the same team here. So, act like it. Got it?" he glared at them until they nodded – rather slowly. "Good, now you have two months to prepare. Senator Nelson is currently in the South Sudan which makes it difficult to get to him at the moment, however," North looked quite pleased at something, "he is coming back to the states in two months to visit family who just happens to live here in Burgess. That will be your only opening as he will be in Washington three days later and be in Congress. Our client has informed us that the hit absolutely must take place before he sets foot in Washington. So, your only opportunity will be those three days that he is here. Understand?"

"Yes," the pair nodded.

"The folder in front of you has everything you need and if you need more information about anything, you know how to get it. Now off you go and behave."

The pair of them grumbled slightly but left North's office. There was a slight pause as they both hovered outside Elsa's office.

"So, thinking we should get a game plan together," Jack shrugged. "How about after work when we both have had a chance to look over the files? We could meet in a mutual place, what about the bar? It's owned by North and run by a fellow assassin so we can freely discuss stuff."

"Yeah okay," Elsa said, fiddling with her snowflake pendant. "See you there at nine?"

"You got it," Jack gave her a wink before he walked away.

Elsa was about to go into her office to study the file that North gave her when her phone buzzed. It was a text from Anna. She opened the message to read it.

Had to go into work to cover a friend and Kristoff isn't home, is it possible for you to swing by home to look after Sven?

When Kristoff moved in, so did his dog, Sven. Now, Elsa wasn't opposed to Sven. She loved dogs but she had made it clear, that she was not responsible for him especially not with her unpredictable work schedule. A sigh came out of her mouth. Well, she was just going to be looking over files and this was certainly something she could do from home and it was Anna begging here. Guess, she was dog-sitting today.

Yeah sure, I can be home in ten.

Elsa's phone dinged within a second of her sending that text.

Thank you so much!

Groaning slightly, she tucked her phone into her back pocket. Well, at least Sven was a pretty awesome dog. Gathering her things, she headed out of the office and back home. Once there, she found a panicked Anna racing around in her light green scrubs.

"I am so late!" she constantly yelled around the house. "Sven has been fed and walked, all you gotta do is just make sure he doesn't get into any trouble," she yelled as she raced past Elsa at the front door. "Where the hell is my keys?!" she screamed as she continued to run past Elsa.

For an answer, Elsa tapped the key hooks by their front door as Anna sprinted past. She stopped in her tracks, performed a one-eighty turn, and looked at where Elsa was pointing. Anna groaned and bowed her head in disappointment as she grabbed her keys.

"Have fun," Elsa sang after her as Anna waved her hand at her.

Kristoff's King Shepard dog came panting towards her. Elsa bent down to give Sven an excited pat on his head.

"It's just you and me," she said as Sven gave her a lick. "Time to go plan a murder I guess?"

Elsa moved into her bedroom with Sven right on her heels. Sprawling herself crossed-legged on her Queen's size bed, she placed all the papers from the file in front of her while she had her laptop sitting next to her. Sven lay down on the carpeted floor next to her bed and just grinned at her. In Elsa's hand was a small blue rubber ball that she loved to play with while she thought.

"Okay," Elsa said, speaking more to Sven than to herself, "so this Senator Nelson is the Republican Senator of Utah." She held up a picture of him to Sven. "In his second term and won the last election in a landslide. Hmm, favourite activity is scuba diving. That would be useful if we were going diving which we are not. Adding that into the 'not gonna help' column." Elsa continued to play with her rubber ball as she browsed the notes. Sven's eyes followed the ball when she bounced it against the wall. "This could be interesting," she said to Sven, "his itinerary shows that he has a charity gala four days after arriving here, let's see if we can access the building's semantics," Elsa pulled up the blueprints on her laptop.

The agency she worked for was amazing in collecting blueprints for numerous high-use areas and buildings. Pitch – the man who provided all these documents (for a high price of course) – was extremely good at his job. There had been numerous times in which Elsa needed a very specific document which he managed to get in record time.

"Hmm, Sven," Elsa said as she examined the blueprints, "the fire exit may be of use, what do you think?" she paused as she looked over at the pet who barked as if in approval. "Yes, I think so too. They lead to a back exit which I can use as my escape route." Elsa threw around her ball. It bounced off the walls and back into her hand. Sven jump to his feet, wagging his tail as he clearly believed he was going to be involved in this game. "However, that doesn't include how I am going to do the hit and how I can get in."

Elsa threw the ball to Sven who caught it on the full, wagging his tail even harder as he did. She thought hard. Normally, she liked to opt for something like poison in cases like this but she did enjoy getting her hands dirty in a bloody way. She looked over the file and her eyes fell on the preferred method of killing. Usually, people wouldn't put something here or they would opt for something that wouldn't draw attention, like something that appeared natural. Sandy was their go-to guy for that kind of stuff. He could whip up a chemical that could put you to sleep forever and leave no trace. However, in this case, the client asked for a full show to be put on. Hmm, that certainly opened her choices.

"What do you think Sven?" Elsa asked her pet companion. "I am a good sniper. I did pass my marksman exam for the agency with a 98% accuracy compared to Frosty's 56%," she sniggered at the memory of those test results coming out. "Although," she paused as the rest of the memory came back to her, "his close-range shooting was a 96% and mine was barely 60%. I swear that test was rigged."

Elsa threw the ball back at Sven but this time bounced it off the wall as to let Sven have a bit of a challenge. Sven still caught the ball mid-bounce. Man, Kristoff really did know how to train that dog.

"Well, another option is good ol' hand to hand combat with a deadly weapon," Elsa said. "Can't believe Frosty tied with me for first place on that one," she added darkly under her breath. "Oh, well."

She continued to pursue the files in front of her. There wasn't a lot from the client which can be both good and bad. On one hand, it made the instructions simple and pretty much didn't have a lot of conditions attached. However, it also told her less about who was actually hiring them. Elsa wasn't going to lie; she was often curious about the people who hired her. Unfortunately for her, North was the one individual who ever knew the true identity of the client. His client coordinators only knew file numbers.

The sound of keys in the door quickly told her that someone was coming home. That was when she realised that across her bed were files on someone that was to die and her computer had semantics of a building that definitely weren't acquired legally. Panic set in as she raced to get all the files back into their brown folder.

"Elsa? You home?"

Elsa swore under her breath. That was Kristoff. Under normal circumstances, this would be a huge problem. However, with Kristoff being a cop, this turned her situation into a full-on disaster if he found out. Oh, how she longed for the days when cops wouldn't show up in her house unannounced.

Kristoff poked his head into Elsa's bedroom the split second before Elsa shut her laptop lid and threw her file under her pillow. Plastering a smile on her face instead of letting the recent adrenaline from moving faster than the speed of light show, she welcomed her roommate into her room.

"You're home early," she said to him.

"Shift change," Kristoff shrugged. "Thanks for looking after Sven!"

"Oh, no problem!"

Sven wagged his tail when his master entered the room and followed him out of the room. Elsa breathed a sigh of relief when the door shut behind Kristoff. That was close. Too close. She needed to be more careful. One slipup and her secret double life would be revealed in an instant. Maybe she needed an office or something.

Checking her phone, she realised she still had a little bit before Frosty wanted to meet her for drinks. Great, that gave her plenty of time to panic about that and go shopping for desks for her new office. Maybe she could convert the space underneath the stairs? It would feel like she was Harry Potter just with a lot more space. Bringing up her laptop, she started looking for nice desks that would fit approx. the length of the room.

The time came and went and before she knew it, her phone was beeping at her to tell her that it was time for her to go meet Jack. Gathering her files into a black leather shoulder bag, she grabbed her keys and headed out.

"Hey Elsa," Kristoff poked his head out of the lounge and gave her a surveying look, "where are you going at this time? Anna will be back soon. She wants to watch the final of WandaVision together!"

"Um," Elsa said as her phone buzzed again with a message from Jack.

Hey, where are you? Already ordered drinks! We doing this or what?

"Elsa?" Kristoff gave her a concerned look. "Are you okay? You look nervous about something."

Well, she was nervous, that bit was true. If Kristoff poked his nose into her files, he would find classified information on a US senator that she should absolutely not be in possession of. Red flag alert. There was also one other thing; stress about the upcoming meeting with her rival.

"No," Elsa shook her head, "I just…it's…nothing," for a split second she was tempted to tell Kristoff a little of what was going through her head – she could work it as co-worker issues rather than what it was actually – but then she failed and opted out at the last second. "I just have some stuff to do. I'll be back soon. Tell Anna I am sorry for missing WandaVision."

"It's okay," Kristoff gave her a look that told her that maybe he knew a little bit more than he was letting on. "I'll let Anna know when she comes home from work."

"Great," Elsa threw on her jacket that was hanging on a hook on the door, "by the way the finale of WandaVision is so amazing!"

"No spoilers," Kristoff put his fingers in his ears. "La, la, la, not listening," he sang as he raced back into the lounge.

Elsa smirked a little as she headed out the front door to her car. The trip to the bar was quicker than she expected. You know that feeling when time suddenly speeds up when you are dreading something? Yeah, that was happening to her. It wasn't that she didn't like Jack – okay so she found him an annoying egotistical prick – but to be assigned the same case? This was only going to lead to trouble.

As she pushed open the door to the bar, she caught the bartender's eye. They exchanged a friendly nod. Her eyes then started to scan the patrons of the bar and soon she found a familiar pair of blue eyes. Resisting the eye roll she so wanted to do, she walked towards her fellow contract assassin who grinned when she approached.

"So, how do you want to play this?" Jack asked the second Elsa slid into a seat opposite him.

"Well," Elsa began but her phone started to ring.

"Seriously," Jack smirked at the sound of her ringtone, "your ringtone is the Kim Possible theme song?"

"I like that show," Elsa scowled at him before answering her work phone. "Winters," she said into the receiver.

"Winters, grab I caught you," the voice on the other end belonged to her boss. "I got a proposal for you."

"Is that Grandfather?' Jack whispered. "Is he calling about the Austin job?"

Elsa made several shushing hand gestures at Jack before answering North.

"Whatcha need North?"

"One of our operatives up has requested your help personally on help in Austin and I figured while you there you could do the De Spasko contract."

Elsa's heart leapt. "That would be great sir. Who's the operative?"

She could hear North chuckling in the background. "As one River Song would say, spoilers. I have just booked you for the eight am flight tomorrow morning. Make sure you are on it. Our operative will meet you at the gate. Do not be late."

"Yes sir!"

"Make sure you also still work the Senator contract."

"Yes sir!" Elsa repeated.

"Have fun in Austin!"

"Thank you, sir!" Elsa hung up the phone.

"Well?" Jack looked at her eagerly. "What did Grandpa say?"

"He says to call you from Austin tomorrow morning," Elsa said with a smirk.

"No!" Jack exclaimed. "No fair! You got the Austin mission? Dammit! Well, I guess you better get back home so you can pack. We will pick this up when you get back."

"Sounds good," Elsa said before she hurried out of the bar.

Half an hour later, Elsa was in her room throwing things into her go-bag.

"Toothpaste, hairbrush, toothbrush," she muttered as she packed. She wanted to make sure she had everything. The last time she had travelled, she had forgotten a bag once – it had half of her clothes in it. Calling Jack to send it over to her was not the most fun memory she had. To this day, she couldn't get that smirk he gave her out of her mind. Curse that boy.

A small knock on her door made her look up as Anna walked into her room. Her sister gave an interested look in the direction of the packed back.

"Oh, where are you off to this time?" Anna was aware that her older sister had to travel a lot for work but the nature of the travel was something that Elsa happily kept hidden in her back pocket from her.

"Austin," Elsa replied, "one of my co-workers asked for my help over there. Don't worry, I'll probably won't be gone more than a few days."

The reaction to this sentence was not something she expected from Anna. What Elsa had expected was maybe some words along the lines of 'have a safe flight' or maybe 'see you when you get back'. The actual reaction was the last thing Elsa expected. Anna clapped her hands in excitement and exclaimed the word 'goodie'. Elsa raised her eyebrows at this.

"What's got you so excited?"

"I just heard from Kristoff, apparently a case he and his partner are working on is linked to a case over there and he is needed to fly out tomorrow first thing and asked if I wanted to join as a nursing conference is being held there, so I said why no. So, it looks like we are heading to Austin too! I'll go tell him to get us all in the same hotel! Oh, this will be just like when mum and dad took us travelling!"

Elsa's heart sank at this news. How was she supposed to help out a fellow operative and carry out a contract with not only her sister nearby but the cop assigned to track her cases was too?

This was going to be…. interesting.

A/N: New update! I hope everyone likes this one! Stay tuned for more!

Collington: Thanks for the awesome review! Can't wait to see what you make of this one! In terms of the senator's crimes, well there aren't necessarily crimes attached to these people. Elsa is a contract assassin so she gets paid to eliminate people good or bad.

Camila: Thank you so much!

Lovepeachy: Sorry for the wait! Been busy with work!
