Chapter 8: The Captain's Office

The second they had landed back in Burgess, Elsa headed straight for her office. What North had told her troubled her deeply. In fact, everything hinged on this not getting out especially to Kristoff and to Anna. She was so caught up with this that she didn't even notice Tooth and Bunnymund's attempt to greet her as she walked into the office. The only thing she was concentrating on was North's office door.

He was on the phone when Elsa walked in.

"I have to call you back," he said the second Elsa walked in. "Thank you." After hanging up, he gave Elsa a long stare. "Close the door," he whispered hurriedly.

Elsa did as she was told before taking a seat opposite her boss. North started to fiddle with a pen embossed with his name on it. It was normal for North to be acting like this. Usually, he would be cool, calm, and collected. This leak was clearly eating at him.

"This will be needed to be taken care of quickly, you understand that right?"

"Understood," Elsa nodded.

North peered out his window to see if anyone was curious about the sudden meeting between the two.

"Dallas Linwood is a high-ranking officer in the BPD. This will not go undetected or be swept under the rug like some of your other cases. I know you have the skills necessary for this, so do not let us down."

"Yes sir," Elsa said.

Usually, there was some workplace banter between the two. North loved a laid-back approach to his employees but this was obviously something that required the utmost level of professionalism the pair have.

"I don't care how you do it or when you do it," North continued. "It just needs to be done before that list is found and read."

"Yes sir," Elsa repeated.

"It is also incredibly vital that the list is found and destroyed. I think that goes without saying."

"Yes sir," Elsa once again said, nodding her head.

"Good," North peered out the door once again. "Not a word of this to anyone! Now go."

Elsa quickly stood up from the chair and walked out the door. The second she closed it again, that annoying gorgeous boy came up to her. Oh god, she thought the second his pretty face came into view, here we go.

"So, what did Grandfather want?" Jack asked, sweeping his oh, so, perfect hair out of his equally perfect eyes.

"Nothing," Elsa quickly said before darting off and out of the office before he could say anything.

"I guess we are invisible?" came an irritated shout from Bunnymund in the background which Elsa ignored.

The second Elsa got home, she decided she needed to come up with a game plan on how she was going to a) get that list and b) assassinate Dallas Linwood. She didn't realise that an opportunity to do the first presented itself to herself quite nicely. When she walked through the hallway of her house, she found Anna racing around in her usual state. The day that Anna wasn't racing around like a lunatic would be the day the end of the world would happen.

"Elsa!" Anna said as she slid past her older sister in her socks.

"Anna!" Elsa repeated back in the same tone. "What?"

"Can you go drop off Kristoff's police files? He left them in the kitchen and he can't come back here as he has to interrogate suspects in some murder case or something. I wasn't listening. Obviously, I can't because I am late for a shift."

Elsa had to stifle a laugh. Of course, Anna was late for a shift. She was an excellent nurse and her patients and co-workers all loved her but that girl couldn't get somewhere on time even if her life depended on it.

"Sure love," Elsa replied, failing at concealing a grin coming over her features.

"Thank you!" Anna skidded away on her socks. "Where are my sneakers?"

"By the front door!" Elsa called back to her.

"Oh, thank you!"

Elsa just shook her head as she approached the kitchen. Sitting on top of the kitchen table, was a large briefcase. Seconds later, the front door closed as Anna left for work. Curiosity started to peek its head as Elsa examined the case. She knew that Kristoff was working on some of her hits. Maybe she should take a little look and see what the police know? Maybe get a sense of if there was anything she needed to fix quickly? Gently pulling it close to her, she saw that it had a combination lock. It required four numbers.

Drat! Elsa thought. Maybe she could guess it? Casting her mind around for what it could be, her brain landed on birthdays. Firstly, she tried Kristoff's birthday. The case didn't open. Maybe Anna's? That didn't work either. Sven's birthday perhaps? He did adore that dog (as did the Winters sisters). The case still refused to open and yield its secrets. Randomly, Elsa decided to try one, two, three, four as an off chance Kristoff didn't change it from the default but even Kristoff wasn't that stupid.

Sighing, Elsa guessed she had to admit defeat. The case could be any combination and she didn't really know a lot about her sister's boyfriend. It could be a significant year or even a combination of numbers he liked. If she was going to blunt force work it, it would take a while and she didn't exactly have a while.

If there was one thing Elsa hated, she hated to admit defeat but without knowing more about the case's owner, she was going to have to give up the ghost. Grabbing the case by the handle, she left her house and got back into the car to travel to the police station. The police station wasn't too far from where they lived. Elsa rocked up to the main desk and asked to see Detective Bjorgman. The sergeant that minded the front desk didn't even look up or even made any acknowledgment but instead waved in the direction of the elevator and said "fourth floor, homicide division".

"Thanks?" Elsa said, sounding a little puzzled but decided not to push it. Making her way to the elevator, she quickly got inside and pressed the button for level four which had a little plaque next to it that said 'homicide'. Several others got onto the lift at the same time pushing Elsa to the back. As the lift closed and went up, Elsa caught what was the tail end of a conversation.

"If you ask me, he's barking up the wrong tree," one of the men at the front was saying to another.

"He could be onto something," muttered a woman, who was texting something on her phone at the same time. "It does add up."

"Bjorgman is nuts to think that there is an assassin here in Burgess," the first man spoke to the woman.

"Trust us, Michelle," the second man said. "We know what we are talking about."

"Men," the woman called Michelle caught Elsa's eye and rolled her own to which Elsa had to stifle a laugh.

All of them exited the lift and walked towards a pair of large double doors that lead into the homicide division. The second she walked in, the man behind the desk asked what she was after.

"I am here to see Detective Bjorgman," Elsa replied. "I have his briefcase," she held it up to emphasis her point, "he left it at my house this morning."

"What's this about Detective Bjorgman?" a large older man who looked like he could have been plucked from a crossover about cattle-workers and a tv detective show walked up beside them. "I am Captain Linwood, who is asking about Detective Bjorgman?"

"Elsa Winters sir," Elsa shook his hand. "Detective Bjorgman is my roommate and I was asked to drop off his briefcase that he left on our kitchen table."

"Oh right," Captain Linwood had an expression of dawning realisation come over his face. "You're his girlfriend's sister, right?"

"Anna is my sister, yes," Elsa nodded and smiled.

"Detective Bjorgman is currently in interrogation at the moment but he shouldn't be too long. How about waiting in my office?"

"Sure," Elsa nodded and followed the Captain into his office before taking a seat opposite his one behind his desk.

"So, what's Kristoff like as a roommate?" The Captain looked a little eager and Elsa quickly realised why he wanted to talk. It was to goss about him. Elsa had to let out a small chuckle at his reaction.

"He's good," Elsa shrugged. Well, she couldn't exactly say having a cop as a roommate was thoroughly annoying. "Although, he likes to use a lot of towels. I feel like we are always washing towels."

The Captain let out a roar of laughter. "Well, as the older sister, you must be quite protective of your sister."

"Naturally," smiled Elsa.

The Captain looked like he was about to ask something else but another detective came into the room.

"Sorry to interrupt," the detective said, "but the perp wants to talk to someone in charge."

"I guess that's me!" Captain Linwood sighed as he got out behind his desk. "Feel free to chill in here. I'll be right back."

Captain Linwood followed his detective out of his office towards interrogation. Elsa took out her phone and started to scroll through social media a bit while she waited for him to come back. That was when it hit her. She was in Captain Linwood's office. The Captain she was supposed to be after. The Captain who has the list she and North need. Instead of looking for it, here she was scrolling through Instagram liking Rapunzel's holiday pictures.

Elsa quickly glanced through the glass panel on the door and saw that everyone was busy. Surely, she could have a quick look around and no one would be the wiser? Making sure to stay low, she ducked behind the desk and starting to fiddle with the papers on the desk. They all looked like case notes both current and past. There was also some court summons to testify in upcoming cases. Hmm, maybe she could check the desk drawers? She pulled each of them open and found what one would usually find in them; more files, stationary, and the Captain's personal belongings. It didn't look like it was here. Her eyes fell onto the computer. Perhaps if she couldn't find a physical copy, she could locate a digital one?

She clicked on a few keys and found that it was password protected. Drat, she thought. There was no way she would be able to hack this without getting caught. She would need some special gadgets to get past the BPD's firewall. That was when her eye fell onto a sticky note that was stuck to the bottom of the computer screen. It was a simple time and place for a meeting along with a phone number. Elsa's heart skipped a beat. She knew that number. It was a number of someone she used to work with. However, she couldn't recall the name of said person. She almost let out a gargle noise of frustration when she heard footsteps coming towards her. Quickly flinging herself back onto her chair and getting her phone out to pretend she was just absently going through social media. That was when the door opened and in walked both the Captain and Kristoff.

"Good job on that confession," the Captain was saying to Kristoff.

"Thanks, Captain," Kristoff's eyes fell onto his girlfriend's sister. "Elsa," he sounded surprised, "what are you doing?"

For an answer, Elsa held up the briefcase. "Someone forgot this when he came into work this morning."

Kristoff face palmed himself. "You are a lifesaver. I need those for a case later today. Can I drive you back to the house?"

"No need," Elsa grinned at him. "I drove here myself so I can easily make my way back home. Well excuse me gentlemen but I have to get back to work myself."

"Thanks again, Elsa!" Kristoff called after her.

As Elsa walked to her car, her mind was busy working on a plan. She needed to find out who's number that belonged to and how to get another sneak peek into the Captain's office. That would be tricky. She couldn't rely on Kristoff constantly forgetting things. No, she had to come up with a plan and fast. Maybe she could start with the phone number. Checking her work's database on her phone while she paused in the car, she searched for the phone number. Nothing came up. Drat, she thought. Quickly texting the number to North, she pulled out of the police's headquarters. Maybe North would be able to come up with something and she would be able to come up with a plan.

Little did she realise that the perfect cover for her was coming up.

Over dinner that night, the three roommates were engaged in normal day-to-day when Kristoff suddenly said he had an announcement.

"I don't know if you guys are aware," he started, looking between the two sisters, "but my work is hosting the annual Policemen's Ball and I would love it if you two came."

"Policemen's Ball?" Elsa sounded a little intrigued. "Isn't that a fundraiser thing?"

"Yep," Kristoff nodded. "Everyone will be there. I was hoping that the two of you could come as support? Maybe even make a small donation? I know it's asking a lot but I would love to have a couple of friendly faces in the crowd."

"Of course, I will be there," Anna said, immediately, "Elsa?" she turned to her. "How about you?"

If everyone was going to be there, perhaps a certain Captain would be there and maybe a certain assassin would be able to lure him away to take him out. Elsa smiled warmly at her roommate.

"I would love it if I could attend."

A/N: What's gonna happen at the police ball? Will Elsa find that list and get her man? I hope everyone enjoyed this update! More to come!

gingergranger: Thanks so much! I am having a lot of fun with Kristoff! I love the family dynamic in this! It's gonna get reaaaalllly interesting very soon!

Lovepeachy: Nothing that Elsa can't handle, right?

Camila ski: Kristoff is getting a little too close but maybe Elsa has a few tricks up her sleeve. Anna is strong, she is a nurse so she witnesses stuff like that often I imagine.
