AN – Hey, I'm here again. Instead of TRaK. I dropped the ball and am looking for it. It is not going well it seems. Anyways, this is multi-chapter, based on the 2020 (yes, last year's prompts. I don't care, I like them) flufftober writing prompts.
Enjoy!
Day One: Candy
"Sarid!"
Sarid looked up from her book and over the back of the sofa, seeing Asher in the doorway. He excitedly held a tall jar, filled with dark little squares.
"Asher?" She asked. He rushed over, holding out the jar.
"Valeria and Adria made these." He told her. "Ted's been letting them sell them at the Tavern – they're salted caramels covered in dark chocolate."
"Dark chocolate?" Sarid asked, the faintest scowl twitching at her lips.
"You don't like it?"
"No, I prefer the sweeter kinds." She told him. He nodded, then went around the sofa. Sarid moved her feet off for him to sit beside her. He took the lid off the jar, pulling one out and held it out to her.
"The caramel should sweeten it." He told her. She just stared at it. "…Tell you what, we'll eat one simultaneously."
"…Very well." She said, taking the square. He pulled one out and they moved, so they both sat facing each other, the jar wedged down between the cushions to keep it from falling over. Asher held up his index finger.
"One-"
"Two-"
"Three-"
Sarid ate it in one bite, Asher surprised. She looked at him incredulously, pushing the square to one side in her mouth.
"Why didn't you eat yours?!" She asked.
"I-I thought we were going to say go!"
"We don't say go...no wait, for food we do. Never-"
She bit down onto the square, breaking the chocolate and she could taste the salted caramel. It all melded together.
It was delicious.
The bitterness was offset by the sweetness of the caramel, the salt in it highlighting the sweet while also not making it overpowering.
She sat and chewed it, slightly surprised. Asher ate his, chewing it. He got a look of surprise as well.
"These are good." Sarid told him.
"They are." He agreed. Sarid pulled out another one, eating it. Asher ate another. Then Sarid another. And Asher another.
"Do they have more?" Sarid asked, eating another.
"Oh yeah." Asher told her, already having another in hand. "They had several more jars."
"Do they have any time limits on getting them?" Sarid asked, getting another.
"They didn't say." Asher told her, chewing around one. "But I'd imagine so."
"Yes, heat would make it difficult." She said, eating yet another.
"Yeah…what book were you reading, by the way?" Asher asked, then eating one.
"Oh, that one you recommended." She told him.
They spoke, still eating the candy squares. Sarid began to feel her stomach get upset, but kept on. A bit later, Asher looked sick a moment, but got another. They were halfway through.
When there was a quarter left, they were both sitting with their legs stretched out and heads back against the sofa, looking sick. They were nauseated, yet both still reached their hands down into the jar.
There was a knock at the door.
Sarid looked at Asher.
"…Come in…" Asher called weakly. The door opened.
"Master Sarid? Mr. Washington?" They both heard Greg ask.
"Yes?" Sarid asked, not moving. Greg walked over, seeing both of them and getting a shocked look.
"Wh-what happened?!" He asked, then seeing the jar. Reaching over, he pulled it from the cushions, looking at it. "What are these?"
"A…chocolate-caramel candy…" Asher told him.
"…When did you get this?" Greg asked.
"…" Asher looked at the clock on the mantle. "…Uh…An hour ago?"
"WHAT?!" Greg exclaimed. "Wh-wha-why…why did you two so many?!"
"They're so good." Sarid said, her voice sounding ill and sad.
"…" Greg sighed, grabbing the lid from the coffee table. "I'll inform Burns about supper, and have Anna bring you both the apple cider vinegar."
"Thank you…" Sarid and Asher told him, voices weak and sick. He left, closing the door.
They both sat there a moment.
"…Asher?" Sarid asked.
"Yeah?"
"I blame you."
"That's fair." He said. "At least, half fair."
"…That's fully fair." She said.
AN – End for today. This is based on a true story – the first time a had an Oreo truffle, I ate so many I got sick. And kept eating because they were so good. My mother was both confused and concerned.
