"Hey there"

Kyoko turned her head to the brown haired, green eyed boy who came to greet her. She wasn't interested in making friends or talking with anyone here, only wanted to cut ties with her father once and for all.

"What do you want?" She asked bluntly.

The boy jumped back a little but didn't take it to heart.

"Well I just wanted to get to know you, I was hoping we could be friends" He said sincerely.

Kyoko looked for signs of any ulterior motives but couldn't find anything, it was possible he was just masking his true intentions...but oddly she couldn't see it, she could read his intentions as if he was an open book.

"I'm not interested" it was the truth after all.

"Why not?"

"It's none of your business"

The boy seemed a little sad because of it, but it did not deter him.

He made a vow to himself he would try to be friends with everyone in his class and he was gonna try that no matter what.

"Didn't I tell you I was not interested?" Repeated the detective to the boy.

"Yeah, but I want to keep trying, I feel we can be great friends"

Kyoko didn't want a repeat of what happened the last time she trusted someone, her gloves were physical proof of that.

But she felt something odd about it, she couldn't pinpoint what.

"Are you gonna leave?"

"Nope"

She rolled her eyes but didn't push him out.

"So what's your name?"

Oh right, they didn't know each other's names or talents, surprising given they have known each other for a week.

"Kyoko Kirigiri, Super High School Level Detective" She answered simply.

He seemed surprised about her last name, probably thinking she was related to the headmaster in some way or just a coincidence.

He was really an open book.

"What 's your name?" She asked to avoid any questions regarding her father.

"I'm Makoto Naegi, Super High School Level Lucky Student...although Super High School Level Unlucky Student probably fits me more" He added with a self-deprecating chuckle.

Ah, yeah, the Super High School Level Lucksters, those were picked by a raffle so they don't tend to be particularly high profile. Hence why there wasn't a lot of info on him when she did a background check on her classmates.

He was an average boy, plain and simple.

"I imagine you have to at least have good luck to enter here over all other people in this country"

"Well yeah, that was actually the luckiest thing to ever happen to me...after what was the worst day of my life...oh sorry, I hope I wasn't over sharing" He apologized immediately.

"It's no problem, you can tell me when you feel like it" She waved a hand dismissively.

The boy smiled, she couldn't describe what she felt seeing him smile...

"You really like coffee, huh?" He said.

"Yes, it's useful for my detective work, it helps being awake and keep energy"

"How is your detective work?"

"I feel it's too soon to talk about that"

"Oh, sorry"

"I'm interested in knowing more about you anyways, shouldn't friendship be both ways?"

"Oh...yeah...it's just I feel I have nothing interesting to say, I'm just an average person…"

"Well...I never know how average people live their lives, so it would be a learning experience for me"

"Well...if you say so, well usually I wake up in the mornings fine, although other times I didn't sleep well so i'm in a bad mood and…"

And Kyoko listened to him talk, engrossed in his stories.

The feeling was...warm.

"Here, have this"

Kyoko looked at the thing Makoto gave to her…a Violet in a Vitro.

"Where did you get this?"

"Well I was playing with the Gashapon machines a bit, I suppose if I'm the Super High School Level Lucky Student I should develop my luck someway while here...however that works. So I got a bunch of things and I decided to hand them out to my classmates based on how they like it"

"And you gave the Violet on a Vitro to me?"

"You don't like it? I think I have something that you must like"

"It's no problem, I like it" She looked at the side with a blush that she hoped he didn't notice.

"Oh, i'm happy then, I love it when I give a gift to my friends and they love it" He said with that damn smile of his.

Kyoko was glad he smiled a lot, he liked seeing it…

"...Friends, huh…"

"Yeah...we are friends, right?"

"...Nevermind, yes we are"

Whatever those thoughts were, she should leave them aside, she shouldn't get any more attached to him than she already was...

"Thanks for helping me with the investigation"

"It's no problem Kyoko, I always want to help my friends"

Despite trying to not get too attached to him, the fact he kept bringing up them being friends as if it was something he did for everyone bothered her.

"Do you do this for the rest of our class?"

"Yeah, I try to help Chihiro and Mondo work out, I help Taka organize things, I act as Byakuya and Celeste's...Butler from time to time, I try to help Leon and Sayaka with Music, I also play Baseball with Leon, I try to help and be there for Toko, I go fetch Donuts for Hina, I…" He spoke excitedly remembering all those times he was helping his friends, sure they got on his nerves a little but it was still fun to be around them.

Kyoko could do nothing to prevent that awful feeling from getting stronger, she liked this about him and yet…

"That's great Makoto, it's really admirable how you're always extending a hand to help our classmates no matter how...eccentric they might be, I of course admit i'm no better in this regard"

"It's ok Kyoko, I love each and every one of you, even the most problematic ones"

She allowed herself to smile at his words.

"So how's your family?"

"They're fine, last time my girlfriend and her family came over, so me, she, her brother and Komaru were playing together-"

"Girlfriend?" Kyoko's voice got a shift, going to an empty and shocked tone.

"Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you guys I have a girlfriend, I'm sorry. I guess it never came up"

"Since when are you dating?"

"Since we were 14, I knew her since I was 12 but she went to a different school so I wasn't able to meet often"

"That would explain why Sayaka didn know nor ask about her '' She tried to remain calm and neutral about the fact Makoto has had a girlfriend for nearly 3 and a half years and nobody knew about it.

"I'm really sorry for not telling you, I didn't think it was important" He apologized again.

"...It's fine" She said trying to calm herself, she didn't know why it bothered her so much, it was like that awful feeling increased a thousand fold in her heart.

"Are you ok?"

"...I need to cool off my head a little, it would be better if we didn't talk for some time" She said walking away from him.

She forgave him eventually, he told everyone about her to avoid problems next time.

She could tell most weren't bothered...except Sayaka and Mukuro, she could have a guess as to why.

It didn't make her feel any better.

Eventually that problem was forgotten, especially when the parade started. She investigated and even got Makoto's help to find out the truth…

Sadly the tragedy soon started and not much could be done.

He was always there, trying to lift people's spirits up and keep Hope going, she was glad he was there with them, she could tell they would be much worse off without him by their side.

Which is why, when the plan to lock themselves in the school for possibly the rest of their lives started, she wants to convince him to stay...and maybe for other selfish reasons too.

"I feel I need to be out there for my family and my girlfriend, I can't just leave them alone in all of this"

"Makoto...you're not the only one who's leaving family and friends behind because of this, all of us are doing it too"

"Yeah, I can understand that, I'm not trying to say they're wrong for doing all of this...but I just can't do it, I don't even feel I deserve to be here over other people...You Super High Schoolers are the world's hope and I just got there by a raffle…"

"That 's wrong!"

He looked shocked over his own catchphrase being used against him.

"Makoto I know you for a year and I can definitely say you're part of the world's hope, dare I say you embody hope more than anyone in this school. You became friends with everyone here and brought us all together as friends, you always have hope that everything will turn out alright. Without you everyone here would be much worse off and I'm sure your family, friends and girlfriend would like for you to reject a place to be safe just because you wanted to protect them….they would want you to be safe"

Makoto looked like he wanted to refute her but couldn't find the words on how to…

"...i'm gonna give them a call, to see what they think"

She watched over that call in order to see when she should intervene. Luckily (hah) for her they acted accordingly to how she expected.

As Makoto finished talking to his girlfriend, a cruel thought when through her head.

'Don't worry about him, i'll take good care of him...you'll probably be dead if the time to leave ever comes'

She was frustrated that she could never solve why the tragedy started.

She was glad that Makoto was locked with her here.

She spent as much time with him as possible, she loved being around him.

Now...if only he could forget about that bitch already…

"Makoto I don't feel clutching to her like that is healthy for you...she would want you to be happy, right?"

"Even so...I been with her for so long, I can't just...move on from a relationship like that so soon"

She sighed, she would just have to be a little more patient, that's all.

"Thanks for being with me Kyoko, without you I don't know what I would have done...thanks for everything" He said with a bright smile.

Kyoko thought that of all his smiles, this one was the best of them all.

At the end of the year since they had been locked up, two figures cuddled in the bed of Makoto's room.

The detective looked at each other with love in their eyes and as they fell asleep, Kyoko whispered something.

"I finally got you"
