Janeway frowned, wondering how best to answer. "It's not that simple, is it?" she said finally. "Because with each choice we make, not only are we confining our experience moving forward, structuring and restricting any future options available to us, but we are also choosing not to engage with the other present choices. And yes, we have our guiding principles, we have our lodestar, we have that which helps us navigate the unknown. And yet we still find ourselves confronting situations like this where even principles do not provide easy answers…"

Chakotay took a deep breath, trying not to be too exasperated. He patiently reminded himself of all the reasons why this was the woman he loved. "Kathryn, I asked what flavor ice cream you want."

"Oh."

After a moment, Janeway scoffed. "Well, coffee, of course. You even have to ask?"

This time Chakotay couldn't stop his longsuffering sigh.
