Summary: Asuka has been going back in time over and over again trying to change the course of events, but the more times she failed the more she changed…. (AU) (Shinji x Asuka).
Wife of Obsession: First Contact
"So, you are the Third child, Shinji Ikari? My name is Asuka Langley Soryu, the second child, and the pilot of the one and only Unit 02. Charmed, huh?"
"Ni-Ni-Nice to meet you Miss Soryu, I am Shinji Ikari, pilot of Unit 01" said boy stuttered his response. The say that he was shocked was an understatement, he just got out of the helicopter and this girl just popped out of nowhere and was so close that there was practically no space between them.
Before either of them could say anything, they heard Misato's voice cut in "Well it looks like someone's in love! You shot straight past us Asuka, and when we saw you with Shinji, you two were so close that I thought you two would kiss!" Misato proclaimed in a teasing voice while Toji and Kensuke were staring in shock at how their shy friend was able to attract the foreign beauty.
Shinji broke out with so much red that his fact matched Asuka's hair. "Sorry Misato, I did not notice you guys were there. I was so excited to meet the famous Third Child that I just had to meet him myself." Asuka responded and Shinji gained a confused look at hearing that he was famous.
"I'm famous?" 'Why in the world would some like me be famous?'
"Of course you're famous Shinji! You are an Eva pilot! One of the elites! We are the only line of defense between humanity and extinction!'' Asuka spoke with such conviction and passion that Shinji just stared at her in amazement. Unfortunately, Misato decided that she wanted to continue teasing the pilots.
"Aww! Asuka is falling in love! She was so drawn in that she didn't notice that she flashed the other boys her panties!" Misato teased the German girl and when the girl quickly got over her shock, she slapped the two.
"Hey! Why did you do that?!" Toji yelled while Kensuke was nursing the red area of his face.
"That was the viewing fee! And don't think about doing anything stupid!" The angry red head warned with a terrifying glare to stop Toji from dropping his pants like he did in her first timeline. Fortunately, Misato decided to intervene before things could get out of hands between the two short tempered teens. "Okay let's drop it. We have to go to the bridge and report to the captain, then we can get a meal."
"Food sounds good, cause I'm hungry!"
"Toji you are always hungry." Both Shinji and Kensuke said simultaneously.
"Hey!"
"Hey Misato, just a heads up, the captain of the fleet is a real jerk and an idiot! I do not want to deal with him and I want to introduce Shinji to my guardian. Can I take him for a while?" Asuka purposely left out who exactly was her guardian so Misato would not reject in a tsundere manner.
"Okay, but I want you guys back with us for food." If Asuka's warning was anything to go by then she did not want to force Shinji to go through with the meeting that she was already dreading.
"See ya later Shin-man!"
"Be careful around that girl man! She's the devil!"
"See you guys later." Shinji's parting words was less energetic than his two friends. Almost immediately Asuka had taken Shinji's hand into her own and led the boy to her destination.
"So Shinji, what is your life like in Tokyo-3?"
"It's okay… life there is pretty normal except from NERV and the Angels."
"Surely being an Eva pilot gives you some perks! Are you famous at school? Are you popular with the girls? Do you have a girlfriend?" Asuka knew that while her intentions might have seemed a little obvious to other people when asking these questions, Shinji having both low self-esteem and being socially inept (especially when it came to girls) would cause said boy in question to not think much about it.
"No, I do not think I am really popular. The only girl I interact with is Ayanami and I do not really understand what she is aside from being a friend."
"What do you mean?"
"Well for some reason I get a weird feeling that I have seen her face somewhere before, but I cannot remember why, and whenever I am around her I feel like I am with a family member like a sister or cousin." Shinji explained his weird situation regarding the only Eva pilot that is not with them. He was not even sure why he was telling Asuka when he never told anyone else about it. Maybe it was because she was a pretty girl who was being nice to him.
'Perfect, Shinji has a subconscious awareness of his relationship with his mom's clone. As of right now I will not have to suffer any rivals since Shinji is most likely unaware of how much he actually appeals to girls or he is just not interested in them.' Asuka was brought out of her internal monolog when they spotted the man that they were looking for.
"Kaji! I want you to meet the Third Child and pilot of Unit 01, Shinji Ikari!" Asuka enthusiastically proclaimed, although she had to hold herself back from making a more grandiose introduction for Shinji. It would not do well for her to embarrass her future husband in front of the man who was her adoptive dad.
"Ryoji Kaji. Nice to meet you Shinji."
"Nice to meet you to Mr. Kaji."
"Oh please just call me Kaji, Mr. Kaji makes me feel old."
"I'm sorry."
"Shinji, you did not need to apologize, you were just being polite." Shinji's compulsory apologizing would be one of the first things Asuka would work on. 'I always hated it when Shinji apologized for everything, regardless of how blameless Shinji was or how small it was whatever he was apologizing for. I swear I will make Gendo and everyone else that had a hand traumatizing us pay. I know I had my hand in hurting Shinji in a few of the timelines, but now I know and understand better. Don't worry my dear, I will save you and shower you with all of the love and attention you will ever need."
While Asuka went from swearing vengeance to ramblings of love in her head, Kaji noticed that the two teens in front of him were holding hands and looked as if the two of them had forgotten that about that.
"Um Misato said that she wanted us to be back in time to eat, so where should we go?"
"I think we should head to the bridge first since it is closest. If they are gone by then we could head to the cafeteria." After Asuka responded to Shinji's question the three went to the bridge, with Asuka and Shinji in the front with Kaji observing them in the back.
'Looks like Asuka has a crush on Shinji. I have never seen her so close to a boy before, let alone holding his hand. Maybe this is what I have been hoping for, Asuka crushing on someone that is Not me. Still, I better keep an eye on the two, don't want them to end up like Misato and I did back then.' Funnily enough, as soon as he thought of trying to protect the two from mistakes he made in a past relationship, they ran into said woman with the two teenage boys following her.
"Oh, what are you doing here!?" Misato shouted the question even though she had a good idea as to why. "Never mind, we finished business with the captain, so lets all head down to get something to eat." Misato wanted to get some information about Asuka and she did not want to interrupt the bonding moment between the two pilots.
Now that the whole group made their way to the elevator, Asuka decided to use the situation that was about to happen to her advantage. Everyone was jammed pact into the small elevator, she managed to get herself into a position where she was in between Shinji and the wall. The boy lost his balance and stuck his hands out in front of him out of instinct.
*Squeeze*
Asuka let out a quiet moan when he squeezed something and when he looked down, he saw what it was that he was squeezing. The boy went paled instantaneously when he put together what had happened.
"I'm…"
"It's okay Shinji, I know that this is an accident. I would normally ask you to move you hands, but it seems like the ways that you are pressed into me is making that impossible. So can you please be gentle will me." Asuka's face was as red as her hair and she was panting a bit before she interrupted his apology. Asuka then had a glint in her eyes and a mischievous smirk before she whispered into Shinji's ears "next time, give a girl a warning before you do that."
Shinji's mind stopped working at what the girl said and his face exploded into red. Just what had happened? Asuka wasn't mad? Next time what?
On the other end Asuka couldn't have been happier, it took her quiet a few loops to perfect that elevator scenario. This little incident will not only provide Shinji a little sample of what he can have when he chooses her, while also establishing her as someone who will not punish the poor boy over accidents and misunderstandings.
How she got that patience and care is a story for another time. Right now she need to focus on maintaining the scenario and meal time was a good time to continue with manipulating events to her advantage.
"So Shinji, I heard that you were living with Misato, right? Does the First live with you guys, too?" Everyone looked at Asuka when she asked this wondering why she asked that, but before anyone could ask about the question, Shinji responded. "Err…yes. Misato was kind enough to let me live with her in her apartment, although we do not live with Ayanami."
"I was thinking, the three of us will need to trust each other, so how about the first, Kaji, and I move in with you and Misato? We would of course help out since we would be living there at the convenience of the both of you" Everyone at the table was thrown through a loop at Asuka's proposal. Kaji was the first to speak up. "I think that while Asuka's idea is a bit unusual, it does have its merit. What do you think?" Kaji turn to Misato when he asked the question.
"Alright. I would have to check with Rits and the commander before I can say anything about Rei." Misato was not to thrilled about have Kaji living in the same apartment has her, but she liked the idea of Asuka living with her again. Hopefully she would be able to reconnect with the girl and see how much she changed.
"Great! Come with me Shinji! There is something I have got to show you!" Asuka then drags the boy off, not bothering with the table ware or letting Shinji take care of his.
The following event was uneventful for Asuka to say the least. She kept to the original script, except she acted with more care and patience with Shinji and was sure to lavish him with praise when for his good work. All and all it was smooth sailing, it was how she was going to use her time with Shinji while they were stuck in Unit 02 waiting to be brought up that was what mattered.
"So Shinji, why do you pilot the Eva? You don't seem to be in it for any of the cool and awesome perks that come as being an Eva pilot."
"I don't know why I pilot the Eva. The first time was because my father was going to use Ayanami despite being in no condition to pilot. I kept on piloting from there, despite how much I hate it, how much it hurts."
"So you pilot the Eva to protect others?"
"I guess? I never thought of it that way. I just think about how much I don't want to do this and how afraid I am. I am a coward." Shinji said this last part with a bit of shame evident in his voice. Asuka frown when Shinji's depressive nature started to show itself, she will fix that.
"It takes some real courage to fight in situations that you're afraid of and continue doing it. Courage and bravery is doing the right thing despite how hard and painful it is, so don't tell me you are coward because you are not. I know this, your report that I rea to get to know you said that you ran away before, but you came back and started fighting again." Asuka's passion and firm belief in Shinji caused him to pause. The male pilot did not know what was happening, but he felt Asuka's words impacting him in ways he could not understand. He smiled a genuine happy smile and said "thank you."
The rest of the day Shinji had his head in the clouds and was not paying attention to anything. Asuka smirked as she had noticed Shinji's expression and understood what it meant. For everything was going as plan.

It's Finally Done! This is probably the longest that I have typed before for a Fanfic! I thank everyone for reading, leaving constructive criticism, and support. I am trying to find a balance where I let everyone in on some of the thought process of what is going on but not showing too much and revealing everything. Did I show too much or not enough? Is my way of showing what is going on in everyone's heads awkward?
As strange as it might sound I do not hate anyone, I guess part of it is because I find it ridiculous to get worked up over fictional characters. The main thing for me is empathy, what lead to them being in the situation that they are in and would I do any better? I don't know and I hope to never be put in those situations to find out. Shinji and Asuka were set up and raised to be so flawed that they would break the way they did since they were kids! I cannot help but to feel bad for the kids that were set up for failure and wish for them to live a happier life.
Thank you to everyone that read Asuka's Fear, especially everyone that reviewed it. I was a little bit worried that the joke would be taken out of context, but it seems like nobody bothered to complain at my poor attempt at humor.
On a side not, I do not know what is going on, but a Fanfic that belonged to TalonEmpire named NGE: Sincerely Yours (or at least that is what I think it's name is) is no longer on the sight. What happened to it? I understand if it need to be taken down because of personal reasons, but You can (Not) Redo is a sequel to that and I think that you will not be able to understand what is going on without NGE: Sincerely Yours. I know that I did not understand the plot until I put two and two together and figured that out, made me wish I figure it out before I started reading them out of order. If at all possible I would like if the Fanfic was back on the site but I will respect whatever decision TalonEmpire comes to.

Just like with TalonEmpire's The One In Your Life I am sort of hopping that Shinji and Asuka will have a happy ending together despite how dark it can get. I understand if it ends up as a tragedy considering the plot, but I like to think that they can pull through and win it. Either way, it will not be easy. They will probably take a long time to heal and there will always be some mental scars left over.

Currently working on Yui's Words, an excellent Fanfic where we see what happens when Gendo is a decent human being and cares for the people around him, especially his own son. Yui's Words is a great Fanfic that I am constantly waiting for to update and I cannot wait to see the ending.
