. . .

Sara didn't know what to think, her mind shocked and muted at that same instance when I'koh's face was revealed. The pain was all she could think about before but now it was dulled by the fear and worry hitting her like a bat. What the fuck . . ?

His face was eerily similar to the enemy's, the same full set mandibles and tusks, jagged teeth lining his mouth as it opened but the eyes . . . the eyes got her the most. They were golden, piercing into hers like knives despite the expression that contradicted it but there was no doubt it was the same as the big brute holding him down.

He's the same as them? He's . . . the enemy?

She snapped from the huge humanoid snatching I'koh away, throwing him like a sack of potatoes until he crashed into the wall and it didn't stop there. Again and again, the alien bashed him into any surface untouched by the fight and then some more, green blood splashing everywhere until I'koh skidded to a stop in the dead center of the room, gasping for air in desperation and unable from the wheezing, still crawling to get his rifle that had dropped in the struggle. The huge alien strided to his side and his foot came crashing down on I'koh, hand, effectively crushing it. He howled like an injured wolf before being picked up by his dreadlocks, held in the air like a doll.

"Ku'lau p'uth," He punched I'koh in the face and kept going. After a few hooks, I'koh's face was battered, barely recognizable with his mandibles dangling and most likely broken, "Su-laugu."

I'koh wheezed, little to no resistance was left in him and hardly has the energy to crack his eyes open. When he did, they searched until locking into hers, a sense of dread and worry coldly crept into the very fabrics of her being and brought about a wave of frustration and anger closely behind.

After everything he did for you, you're just going to watch and let him be killed!? Pathetic!

The memories flashed in her mind, the screams of children begging to stop the violence . . . the angry man kicking and slapping in any way to cause damage to the weak . . . she remembered the burning rage that fueled her to act then and doing so now in this moment.

Going for it, Sara mustered all her strength and twisted around. It was luck that the creature was distracted for a split second, enough to release her hand and grab for the glock gun hidden underneath her clothes. By the time the creature realized, it was too late. Sara pumped it with lead and dashed toward the huge humanoid as he was about to cut down I'koh with his blades and without hesitation, fired with precision, getting a bullet at the wrist holding I'koh.

The humanoid screeched, turning around to get after her. Her body reacted, instincts washing over the pain of her injuries to dive into a slide, missing a punch swing inches from her face, positioning herself between him and I'koh to act as shield with her gun pointed.

"Interesting . . ." The humanoid rose to its feet, a computerized voice channeled through him, "Ooman . . . Brave for a fool . . ."

Sara tightened her grip, "Fuck off."

The humanoid huffed, mandibles clattering in amusement until turning to look at I'koh on the ground, still struggling to breathe or move a muscle. It paused for a moment and then spoke in some babbling nonsense until she noticed I'koh's body becoming tense and growling softly, only to suddenly shrink when the humanoid spoke briefly. Is this . . . their language? She went cold, further verifying her suspicions that they had some connections . . . if their similar appearance wasn't enough.

Sara kept the gun pointed, moving the barrel aimed at its head when it turned back to her, "What do you want?"

It huffed, "None of your concern . . . unable to comprehend . . . small brain . . ."

A vein from her forehead throbbed and her nerves burned. Who do you think you are!?

"Look. I don't care about your opinions. Leave now or else you'll regret it," It was an idle threat but Sara prayed it would make the enemy pause or something. She was looking for a way to distract him and that's all she had.

The humanoid cackled like an evil witch, bolstering with his arms raised as if to make a statement he wasn't buying. He went in a circle and then stopped, "Foolish . . . ooman . . . Don't understand the situation . . ."

He paused and then looked back to her, "Know . . . the truth . . . about him?"

That took Sara by surprise. The truth? At first, she thought it was some sort of trick to get her off guard until I'koh hissed behind, his voice struggling to get the words out, "Don't . . . say . . . anything!"

The enemy chuckled, "You . . . not tell . . . her . . . S'yuit-de. No matter . . ."

Sara had taken her eyes off for a second but that's all it took for the humanoid to be right in her face, grateful she ducked at the right time or else the enemy's claws would have ripped her face to shreds. She shot from underneath but the bullets bounced off of him, her gun emptied with nothing to show for it and saw his skin hardened and changed color. What the fuck is he?

Before she could load her gun, the humanoid smacked her hand so hard that the gun flew so fast and with such force that it embedded in a nearby wall and her hand broke, feeling like the bones shattered into dust inside. She half-screamed before a kick to her stomach knocked her back and she thrashed all the way until a piece of broken wall stopped her. The pain returned in full force and took hold of her entire body to the point she couldn't move even a finger and she went in and out of consciousness, laying only a few feet away from where I'koh laid.

"Poor, little thing . . ." Using a woman's voice, soft and friendly, a pole opposite of the person it came from, the humanoid walked steadily, "So frail . . . so stupid . . ."

"Don't . . ." Both their attentions were drawn to I'koh crawling to them, "hurt her . . ."

The humanoid huffed in ignorance and then said something else that made I'koh tense once more, almost shocked and worried . . . like someone hiding secrets. It didn't matter what she thought if she didn't make it out of here alive. The enemy reached for her and she knew if he got her, this would be the end. Sara closed her eyes and in the deepest crevice of her being, she prayed for anything. Please . . .

Just as she lost hope, the whole ordeal changed like a flip of a page just like that.

The humanoid screamed, stumbling back and reached behind for something. When he turned around, his whole left side was completely burned, dominated by a crater of heat and smoke. Is that . . ?

A battle cry shattered the chaos and both creatures and human soldiers paused, everyone realizing in the next moment that it was Ma'dti shooting a strange plasma gun. Ma'dti!?

The humanoid roared as soon as he saw him, "T'ragar!"

Ma'dti didn't stop, even as a thick arm was coming in a roundhouse motion right at his face. With skills that would impress even a General, he slid to invade the attack and used the momentum to shoot another blast right at the enemy's chest, causing him to let out a screech only an inhuman monster would give. Ma'dti didn't relent in his barrage, coming at him with another blast that hit the enemy's leg, dead center of the knee joint and it exploded in many pieces of flesh, bone and debris.

The humanoid fell and Ma'dti wasted no time in getting on top of him, plasma gun cocked and humming, "Ca'ku dah c'jit!" He swung his blades but Ma'dti kicked his arm away in a maneuver that dug them into the ground and they and the enemy's arms were gone, the edge of his humerus sticking out like sore thumbs dripping with green fluid and hanging tendons.

In a last ditch effort, the enemy called out for the remaining creatures nearby and they rushed to help. Ma'dti didn't remove nor react in any way but instead, reached for his gauntlet and pressed. The area surrounding them exploded by small blasts and the creatures were caught in a bright light before her eyes. As the cloud dust settled, nothing remained, not even a limb as if they vanished into thin air and everything went silent. What?

"An-de u'sl-kilod?" Ma'dti hissed through the mask, pointing the barrel at his opponent's head.

Instead of cowering, Sara watched as the enemy chuckled, the last act of defiance as Ma'dti tightened his grip on the weapon until he spoke in the human tongue that sent chills through Sara's spine.

"I'm . . . not . . . the only one. He's . . . coming."

She paused. Who's coming?

Ma'dti didn't bother to ask questions. Without hesitating, he pulled the trigger and the enemy's head was completely destroyed, the body dropped and twitched for a few seconds before finally moving no more.

Oh my God . . . He did it.

But they weren't out of the woods yet. Somehow, more of the hybrid creatures surrounded him and he responded with a warning growl. The beats snapped their jaws and clawed into the metal ground, creeping closer, waiting for the moment to strike. Now, Ma'dti was in trouble.

Just as the tension was about to snap, the creatures suddenly paused and turned their heads in one direction. Sara squinted her eyes in confusion until she heard a faint whistling, barely humming for a few seconds and then stopped. The beasts howled before running out of there, jumping over things and squeezing into tight spaces until they were all gone.

Is it . . . over?

Sara watched as Ma'dti headed for his brother, saying something in his alien language but at least I'koh responded, trying in vain to get up. Good. He's still alive. She tried to do the same but every fiber of his being hurt in agonizing pain and she felt her consciousness starting to fade. Don't go to sleep!

She heard the shouts of soldiers and Commander Evans as they ran to surround Ma'dti and I'koh with guns aimed for them, the first posed to fight but then I'koh said something that caused Ma'dti to drop his gun.

"Get the weapon! Secure the specimens!"

Sara saw through her fading vision that Evans was running to her, kneeling to pull her up. Despite his lips moving, she could hear nothing. What is he saying? Fuck . . . He kept waving his hand back at the soldiers, then to Ma'dti and I'koh, back and forth it went and he appeared angry . . . furious would put it mildly.

Her sights slowly darkened. Wait . . . Not yet.

She couldn't fight back but in the split moment before she lost consciousness, she swore that she saw I'koh looking at her . . . reaching out . . . for her.

"So . . . he failed."

The figure in the chair grunted in disapproval, leaning back as he observed the backwater planet. Who would have thought that oomans would take out one of my own? He tapped on his lower mandible. No doubt the traitors are involved. At least I know where they are now.

Getting up from the chair, he walked through the open space of the front dock to one of the pods, pressing his forearm to glance inside a small window with clear, bubbling liquid on the other side.

"Don't worry, my pets. It won't be long. You'll get your chance."

He smirked as a tentacle bumped on the window and a slit eye looked back at him. The thrill of the hunt was still to come . . . and he couldn't wait to unleash carnage onto this pitiful planet and everything that swelled there.
