Fighting Destiny 6
Chapter 34 Definitely Not Fed Ex

Tara dropped off Abel for the day at Donna's. She insisted Ellie and Kenny loved playing with him. Tara was a little doubtful because Abel must seem like a little kid to them, but she was grateful to have some time to herself to pack and just have a little peace and quiet.
Tonight, she and Jax were going to finally tell Abel they were moving. He had already figured out something was going on because he'd asked why Baby Nate's stuff was all gone. She told him they had put it all in boxes to save it. That was true enough. He then wanted to know if they were going to send some of it to Grandpa JT.
She thought she had her emotions under control, but there was just something about Abel's question that made her want to cry, but then, she wanted to cry most of the time. She hadn't answered his question instead giving him a chocolate graham cracker. He was still at the age when he could be distracted with food and she reasoned that a graham cracker—even a chocolate graham cracker—was better than a cookie.
She was also a nervous wreck because she couldn't shake the feeling that they weren't going to be able to get out of Charming—at least not alive. This poisonous little town had already claimed the life of her son—how many more lives would be lost before they could leave?
Tara gave herself a mental shake. She was just thinking crazy. Maybe part of it was simple worry. Jax was off with the MC locking down the second to the last deal before he was out of the MC. She was terrified that something would go wrong and Jax would end up either dead or locked up. She could hardly wait until they were out of this horrible place and Jax was out of the MC. It would be such a relief not to be constantly worried that he was going to be killed or locked up for years.
There was a knock at the door and Tara opened it without looking through the peephole. A few days ago, she'd found an urn that looked a lot like Baby Nate's much loved bunny. It was a fitting place for his ashes. It was coming in the next four hours, so she expected to see a Fed Ex employee. The two men on her doorstep were definitely not from Fed Ex. They were the detectives who had come to her office.
Tara's heart felt like it was going to pound out of her chest. This was definitely not good. She was terrified she was going to be arrested, but there was no police car parked outside. Surely if she were going to be arrested they wouldn't have brought an unmarked car.
"Dr. Knowles," Ambrose said, "we'd like to come in and ask a few questions." The little man watched her with those pale almost colorless blue eyes. His partner Detective Sprague stood behind him, a big hulking presence.
"I'm not speaking to you again without my attorney," Tara said. She was trying to project strength and confidence, but she felt neither. Instead, she was terrified.
"Can you give him or her a call and then we can talk?" Sprague asked.
"No. It's Saturday in case you haven't noticed," Tara snapped.
"We thought you would jump at the opportunity to clear your name," Ambrose said.
"I've met with you once. I have nothing to say beyond that. I'll provide you with the name of my attorney on Monday."
"Think we could maybe come in and look around," Sprague suggested.
Tara stared at the guy. She wasn't about to let either of the guys in her house. At least for now, they didn't know she was moving and she had no intention of telling them. Unless she was arrested, she was pretty sure they couldn't stop her from leaving town. She also didn't think she was under any legal obligation to tell them she was moving.
"Get a warrant. There's no evidence here because I haven't done anything wrong."
"We'll let you get back to enjoying your day," Ambrose said with a thin smile.
"Why don't you go chase after some real criminals," Tara said as she slammed the door. For a moment, her temper got the best of her. She locked the door and stumbled into the kitchen on shaky legs.
Maybe this was how she was going to be kept in town. Maybe she was going to get arrested and tried for giving Otto that cross, but Gemma was the only one who could put that cross in her hands. Otto was a proven liar. She would be OK as long as Gemma didn't rat her out.

Linc Potter was studying the white board in the RICO room above the sheriff's station. In a cost cutting move, the county was providing police services to the town for a large fee. In the end it still saved the city money because the deputies were paid substantially less then the city had paid its police officers.
He knew if he didn't catch a break soon in his investigation, it was going to be closed. And he was so damned close to having enough to bring down the Sons and all its charters, but he could feel it all slip through his fingers.
"How'd the talk go with the good doctor?" Linc asked as Ambrose and Sprague entered the room and shut the door behind them.
"Wouldn't talk to us without her attorney," Ambrose said.
"That was to be expected," Linc said. "Today was really all about rattling her a little."
"She was plenty rattled," Ambrose said with a smirk.
"Her hands were shaking," Sprague added.
Linc picked up his carton of chocolate milk and sucked some down. He was pleased. Knowles' reaction was even better than he'd hoped for. He carefully set down his carton before waving his hands in the air like a magician conjuring something out of nothing.
"Gazing into my crystal ball, I see a witness coming forward who will put that cross in the good doctor's hands."
The three men exchanged smiles. Dr. Knowles was about to have a very bad day.
