I'm disappointed. This story had so many reviews for the first two chapters. Then it hasn't had a single one… Oh well. This isn't exactly my best writing and I started it without really having a plan for it. Either way, here is the last chapter. And for anyone who has read it, I hope you like it.
New Year's Night
"What time is it?" I asked. "It must be almost midnight now." Lorelai looked to her watch, I was holding onto Amina and none of us had thought about putting a wall clock in the basement.
We had been hearing fireworks all week, just like they usually were of course. But then people had started going worse with them during this whole day- several times again we had been crawling down under the table with what Amina was so unbelievably afraid of.
Last night we had at last put on her a pair of noise reducing headphones I had found through the Internet, and when Kirk once again showed up and wanted to meet Amina, I thought I might as well send him to buy a pair to make himself useful…
"Five minutes."
I gave a slight nod, but as I rocked her slightly back and forth Amina suddenly opened her eyes and woke up.
"Are you awake, all of a sudden?" I made sure the headphones were completely covering her ears. "You can go back to sleep if you want to. I'm right here, you have nothing to worry about…" I could even feel how Lorelai watched us and what she thought. "It's okay Lor…" Amina closed her eyes again and I turned upwards. "…I know what you're thinking… I really would change this if I could, make it easier for Amina to trust you. Or anyone I would…." I was suddenly interrupted when she whined slightly. "Oh, sch, sch, sch. It's okay. I know it's in the middle of the night…." Amina moaned slightly again.
I wasn't certain even if Amina could hear her own voice through the headphones. She could impossibly hear mine or anything else, but it was suddenly obvious she wasn't just whining.
"Was there something you wanted to let us know?" Amina whined again. "What are you trying to say baby?"
"Mo… ma…" I looked towards Lorelai, my chin dropping. "Momma… da… da-da…"
"Yeah… She was looking first at Lorelai when she said "momma" and then towards me so she knew… well, somewhat knew what she was saying. "Yeah, that's it. That's right… That's right…" I carefully kissed her forehead while she slipped back away into unconsciousness. "…I am your da-da and she is your momma…" I would have wanted to say something more but couldn't figure what. Only seconds later Lorelai was anyway despite having seemed stunned.
"I have never seen you like this Luke." I couldn't help but laugh shortly. "Barely even with Rory when she was little and we first met."
I didn't answer, seeing the way Amina laid in my arms, with the music in her headphones still playing and holding her like this was answer enough for now.
"I am your da-da…" I repeated at last. "And she is your momma. And that is the way it is always going to be. Now, you're here with us we are going into 2020. And we will be here in a year, when you've turned four, and 2021 when you turn five…." She was so little where I held her right now. "And we will still be right there with you…. And you will still be right here with us."
I couldn't help but smirk thinking about what Lorelai had just said…
I had barely let Amina go with my vision for a single second ever since she had met her in that airport. It was like I couldn't see her enough…
It was as if her dark skin, dark hair and dark eyes lit something up that I hadn't known was empty and dark before.
"The future seems like a nice place." I said, just as the banging of fireworks went wild outside. "… I can't wait to meet you there… both of you…" I kissed Amina's forehead again for the new year, then leaned over her so I could kiss my wife too. "…Happy new year girls."
Random fact
I actually kind of feel bad for Luke in this. It's New Year's 19/20 and he has no idea what 2020 will be like.
I might put up a oneshot that's a sequel to this one, closer to Christmas and set one year after this story. I'll update this author's note when or if I put it up.
