Chapter 2: First steps and new partners
Ron sat in one of the prep rooms, the matches for today having been concluded. He had gone looking for Milo, who was currently taking care of his Eldegoss and congratulating him on his fights today. Most of them had been losses, but a few were unable to defeat him. According to Milo, those opponents had been a little too GREEN… a little grass-gym humor, the trainer had claimed.
"Did you get a chance to watch today's fights?" Milo asked, continuing to examine his Pokémon for any noticeable injuries.
The blonde teen nodded a few times. "Yeah, as soon as I finished in the kitchen… only the last seven, or so" Ron admitted, recalling the events.
"Wow! And here I figured that you'd only make it to the final one or two, just how fast ARE you in the kitchen?" the gym leader remarked, proud at the work Ron had done.
"Quick enough to head back after the last fight and whip up something special for both of you, for doing such an amazing job!" the blonde sidekick declared, both Milo and Eldegoss lightening up at the claim.
Eldegoss seemed especially happy, as it started bouncing up and down in joy. Had Ron REALLY been scared of him at the start?
"That's mighty nice of you, Ron! You'd better be careful… if this goes on, I might offer you a permanent job!" the older gym leader teased, not that he would have any issue with the blonde sticking around.
"That reminds me of what I wanted to talk to you about… that Dynamax thing?" Milo nodded at the words. "I think I've seen it before…" Ron started to explain.
…
A few hours had passed since the end of the matches. The gym's staff all sat in the dining hall, a small feast spread out in front of them. It had been prepared by their new chef, to celebrate their hard work (and great success) during today's event.
"Here's to the start of a great league!" Milo declared, everyone raising their cups in the air. "…and to our new head chef, that helped make it such a success!"
They'd explained to Ron that everyone had loved what he'd made, the gym making a killing on concession sales during the matches. Their gym was set for a good, long while. They would be able to repair their older facilities, even expand some of them!
"I just did what I could… no big deal…" Ron replied modestly, garnering a laugh from the trainers around him.
About an hour later Milo explained the he wanted to talk to Ron about something, the gym leader had gotten word from Sonia…
"So… was she able to find anything?" the blonde teen asked hopefully.
"No, sorry…", there was no point sugarcoating it. "She spent most of her time on research, finding nothing concerning what could have made you simply appear here-" the older man explained, cutting off upon seeing the blonde's expression. "But… I did relay to her what you told me, about the light that looked like Dynamax?"
The blonde perked up, leaning closer to hear better.
"Basically, we still don't know EVERYTHING there is to know about the Dynamax phenomenon. You may be able to find out more if you visit other cities… or their gyms, you know? Get a first-hand look, maybe even experience it?" the large man suggested. "Also, Sonia is still trying to learn about Dynamax herself, you might even end up running into her and convincing her to help you during your travels."
…
"B-But, wouldn't that mean I would have to go… out there?" Milo nodded at Ron's observation.
"Exactly! That way you could see Dynamax first hand, maybe uncover a few clues concerning how you came here!" the man added.
"B-But, I'm not a trainer! Hell, I don't even have any Pokémon!" the blonde tried to reason.
"You could always catch a few… Hell, I could even give you one of our Wooloo" the gym leader offered, pulling something out from behind him. A pouch, with a few small balls inside of it. 'Pokeballs…' Ron recalled.
"But… don't I need to fight and weaken Pokémon, before I can catch them?" he asked.
"Yes… but some of them will be weak enough that you can capture them without that, or maybe they'll even volunteer to join you!" The gym leader noticed the expression on the blonde's face. "Pokémon are extremely intelligent, some can even sense the quality of a person…" Milo proudly declared, petting his Eldegoss.
…
"Hey, I'm not saying you should aim to be the champion or anything… but, maybe this is just the thing to help you get back home."
As much as Ron hated to admit it, Milo had a point… why did he have to be so smart?
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
The blonde sidekick was busy with his normal work in the field, his boss's words still running through his mind. Ron had gotten next to no sleep since yesterday, one thought in particular nagging him.
'Should I really do it?' Ron pondered once more. What Milo had said to him was all true, very logical, and could speed things up considerably… But, was he really ready for it? To become a TRAINER?
Ron was far more accustomed to the different Pokémon in the area now, yes. But, to venture OUT THERE? That would be a whole new world.
"Haa… I need to think about it some more…" the blonde declared. He continued working in the field, the pouch Milo had given him strapped to his side. It was swaying, hitting him in the ribs… Keeping his pants on was hard, but thankfully he hadn't had a single… incident since he'd arrived here.
But that pouch was getting annoying, so much so that Ron finally gave up and set it down on the grass a few feet from where he was working. He didn't plan to use it anytime soon, after all… At least, not until he found his answer.
…
A few hours later Ron had finished his job in the field, now heading back to the kitchens. The blonde teen had agreed to teach some of the staff how to cook like he did. They'd practically begged him for lessons, after Ron's resounding success during their recent event. He was more than happy to share one of his favorite pastimes with them.
Ron was teaching two of the staff members, one of the older ladies of the gym and a younger guy. The woman wanted to be able to whip up something for her family, the guy wanted to impress a girl he was seeing.
Ron had agreed to teach them everything he knew, even if it took quite some time. His students wore normal outfits, the gym currently being closed. But, despite that, Ron still chose to remain in his gym uniform as he worked. It helped remind the blonde that he was still so very far away from home…
The small pouch Milo had given him sat on the counter behind Ron, he didn't want it to get in his way.
"I see Milo finally gave you those pokeballs, it took him long enough!" the woman he'd been teaching mused. She was putting the finishing touches on her dish, feeling very proud of her work.
"I take it he told you about it ahead of time?" the blonde teen asked.
"Yes… he had it ready for at least a week or so, said he needed to wait for the right time…" She giggled to herself. "So, have you thought about the Pokémon you want to catch?"
"Me? I just got the things yesterday… I didn't have the time to even-" Ron began, his explanation interrupted by a loud sound. A tiny beam of light shot out from behind him.
All three turned to see the pouch shake, a small ball rolling over and opening in a flash.
"Wha-what?" Ron stuttered, upon noticing the white light dimming… and what came out of it. "You? What were YOU doing in THERE?" he couldn't help but ask the same small, fox Pokémon he'd gotten to know.
"Wow, a Vulpix! How cute!" the older woman cooed. She made a beeline to the small thing, starting to pet it. "When did you even have the time to catch it?"
"A Vulpix?" Ron echoed, glancing towards the guy next to him.
"Yep, a Vulpix. They're not exactly rare, but they can be quite difficult to catch- they usually run away from people… But, I have to say, this one seems a bit… different" the guy explained, looking closer.
"Really?" Ron replied, he glanced at the small fox Pokémon being pampered by the older lady. "This little guy wouldn't leave me alone, not since the day I met him. You said he looks different… is it a baby, or something?"
"I'm not sure, let me check…" The guy pulled out his odd phone, opening it to reveal a picture of him and some girl plastered across his screen.
"Looks like you don't need my lessons anymore…" Ron teased, the guy blushing and opening an app. Ron's student pointed his camera at the small fox, an image appearing on the screen. It included the details of the Pokémon, a bio, and the different moves it could learn.
But the image was DIFFERENT… not the shape, but the COLOR…
The Vulpix in the picture was red all over, but the one currently playing with the old lady was golden with red tails.
"He's a bit different-" Ron commented.
"SHE… It's a she…" the old lady advised, the Vulpix yelping at her happily.
"She?" Ron parroted, the small Vulpix yelping at him once more. The Pokémon jumped at his chest, spurring Ron to quickly catch her. She yelped at him, sounding a bit annoyed about something. "Of COURSE you're a girl…" She continued glaring at Ron. "…a PRETTY girl?"
It didn't two seconds, she yelped once more (only sounding much happier than before) as she leaned against his chest.
"You didn't even know her species, or her sex?" the guy next to him asked.
"I didn't even CATCH her…" Ron swore, his two students staring at him incredulously.
"What?" they both replied in confusion.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
"So, you've already got a Pokémon…" Milo observed, spotting the small fox walking next to the blonde.
"Apparently, I do… somehow" Ron chuckled, the gym leader staring at him with a raised eyebrow. "I honestly didn't do anything… I don't even know HOW I got her inside the ball…"
"Huh… so, she joined you on her own. To be honest, it's not that unusual… But, still a nice sight to see. You know, she seems a bit different…" the man pointed out.
"Yeah… I was thinking that too…" one of the staff interjected, the others behind him nodding in agreement.
For some reason, Ron's two students had seen fit to call a meeting about the whole situation… and Milo didn't even scold them for it! It was all okay with him.
"During my time as a gym leader, I've seen a LOT of Vulpix… Many trainers catch them specifically to use against our grass types. That one… I-I think she's a SHINY…" the gym leader whispered, amazement in his voice.
"A "shiny"? What's that?" It seemed silly to ask, with a simple name like that. But for someone like him, who was completely new to this world, it was a legitimate question.
"It's when a Pokémon is born different… Nothing bad, but they usually have minor differences in coloring and a slight quirk to their abilities…" Milo explained, examining the smaller Pokémon.
"Oh… that's pretty cool!" The blonde glanced down at his Vulpix. "So, what can you do?"
His Vulpix started to jump around with a happy yelp.
"Is being ADORABLE your special thing?" the blonde joked, earning Ron a laugh from the trainers in the room.
"Are you going to name her?" someone asked.
"Name her? Isn't her name already Vulpix?" the blonde teen questioned, the fox Pokémon scratching playfully at his leg.
"Well, yeah… But you can give her a UNIQUE name, if you want" Milo explained. They concluded the meeting, but not before everyone took pictures of the rare and adorable fox Pokémon.
…
Ron sat on his temporary bed, staring at the Vulpix he now had. She was busy snuggling into his folded legs, as he petted her head.
Despite everything that had happened… he still was no closer to answering that one, crucial question. 'Do I REALLY want to go out and catch Pokémon?' Ron still hadn't REALLY decided, as Vulpix had discovered one his pokeballs and simply chose to climb inside.
…and now, Ron had a Pokémon. Was it to be his first? Or, his one and only? Regardless, he'd already decided to let her stay. If anything, this was a chance to follow Milo's advice. To check out the other gyms… and find his way HOME.
It was as good a plan as any…
"So… what do I call you?" Ron asked, the small Pokémon looking up at him. "I mean, do you WANT me to give you a name?" As soon as he'd asked, Vulpix rested her front paws on his chest and yelped happily. "Okay, so that's a yes…"
From what he understood from Milo, Vulpix were predominately a fire type. 'So, a fiery name should fit her…' Ron was tempted to simply call her Kim, as Vulpix's red tails reminded him of his best friend. But… that would make him seem kind of creepy.
What kind of friend would give his pet (or, in this case, his Pokémon) his friend's name? That was ALL KINDS of wrong! So, he had to give her a different one…
'Blaze? Volcana? Ash?' A few names came and went, before one popped into his mind. He glanced down at the fox Pokémon.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
"So, I've thought about what you said…" Ron began, arriving at the field where his boss was busy working.
"About going and checking out the rest of the gyms, right?" the large man asked.
"Yeah, it might help me. So… me and Cinder will try it out!" the blonde teen exclaimed in excitement.
"Cinder?" Milo inquired, before noticing Ron's new Pokémon jumping into the air. "I see… but the fact that you picked up a fire-type while staying at MY gym… not sure how to feel about that" the man joked, before asking Ron to follow him back to his office.
In the end, Milo and the rest of the staff had wanted to throw a little party for Ron. Said blonde had politely refused, swearing that he would come back and visit as soon as he could.
The gym leader had agreed, on the condition that Ron would cook for them again when he returned. Ron's food had boosted the gym's reputation, as well as help cover their many expenses. Milo had given the blonde teen some funds, as well as camping gear to help him on his journey. Finally, the older man had offered him a device called a Rotom Phone. It was basically a type of smartphone, with a face on the back of it… Ron didn't ask. It had a built-in pokedex, which could describe the different Pokémon he ran into. Obviously, it could be used as a phone as well if he needed to make a call.
"I really wish I could send someone with you… But, with the league starting…" Milo apologized again, clearly upset that he couldn't offer more on such short notice.
"It's fine Milo, you've already done more than enough!" the blonde teen reassured him, for the umpteenth time.
Milo finally accepted the blonde's words with a handshake, Ron trekking into the wilds outside of town. On his way there, he finally got to see the areas on the outskirts of town- the many different farms and shops. According to Milo, it was better if Ron headed straight into the wilds… if only to gain some experience.
…
"Well, THIS is going to take some time…" Ron remarked. He gazed upon the vast, grassy plains. They seemed to stretch a bit too far for his liking. The blonde was currently sporting a new pair of blue jeans, with a matching hoody. He wore a red shirt underneath, along with a pair of black gloves.
He'd chosen to use a portion of his funds to buy some supplies, as well as his new outfit. Ron had been nervous about wasting some of his limited cash on an outfit, of all things. However, he had been assured by the gym's staff that money wouldn't be an issue… if he battled other trainers along the way.
"That's what they said, but how am I supposed to fight them?" the blonde couldn't help but wonder. He'd seen Milo do so inside the stadium, but how would that work in the middle of nowhere?
Plus, how was he supposed to train? Just sick Cinder on some random Pokémon they happened to run across?
He'd have to find out… and soon.
"I guess I'll just wander a bit and hope for the best- oh, right!" Ron suddenly remembered, grabbing his single occupied pokeball and pointing it at the ground. The ball opened, a familiar fox Pokémon appearing. 'I just can't get used to that.'
Cinder yelped as she took in her surroundings, before jumping around. 'At least she's happy about this…' the blonde teen mused. Ron's Pokémon darted away, running off into some tall grass a few dozen feet from him.
"Cinder what are you- wha!" Ron's words morphed into a shout, upon witnessing the small flame that shot out from the fox's mouth.
It flew in a flash of light, before hitting something in the bushes. As soon as it did Ron could hear a frightened yell, before whatever it slammed into ran out into the open. The blonde simply stared in shock at a cherry-shaped creature. It had a round, pinkish body and a faded purple petaled head. It began to run, clearly afraid.
"Cinder, stop!" Ron bellowed, before his new Pokémon could attack once more. He rushed forward, flinging his bag onto the ground and pulling out a water bottle. The blonde quickly poured its contents over the flames, the strange new Pokémon's head currently on fire.
It rapidly extinguished the fire, helping to calm the small Pokémon down. It simply laid on the ground, swirls in its eyes.
"Oh man… are you okay? What am I saying? Of course you're not…" Ron glanced at Cinder, who seemed proud of her work (despite the look he was shooting her). "I'm really sorry…" Ron could plainly see the tears in the little Pokémon's eyes, he nearly felt like crying himself. "Uhh… I- how about I make this up to you, okay?"
…
The blonde teen hadn't expected to make camp almost as soon as he'd departed, but really didn't have any other options at the moment. Ron squatted over a small pot, cooking up something he'd picked up during his supply run earlier. Glancing to his side, he spotted Cinder. She was still looking proud of her earlier work, sniffing the air expectantly for her master's praise.
On the other side was the little berry-like Pokémon, it was looking a bit better than before. Ron had given it some time alone, along with the prospect of some food as an apology. A few minutes later, the meal was ready. The blonde produced two small plates and he presented the first one to Cinder, who was very happy about it.
As she started wolfing down the food, Ron took the second plate and offered it to the little berry-like Pokémon. "Here you go… Again, I'm sorry about Cinder attacking you like that…" He set the plate down, before moving away from the little Pokémon.
Ron moved back to his happily-eating Pokémon, sitting next to her. "Cinder… you shouldn't attack other Pokémon like that…" The Vulpix stopped eating, staring at him in wonder. "I mean… I know that we're supposed to get stronger, but don't do that on your own… okay?" Ron petted her head, she nodded and yelped her understanding of his words… at least there was that.
'Her fur is REALLY soft…' Ron marveled. He'd never had a chance to experience having a furry animal as a pet, because of his father's allergies. Now, after having tried it? It was so phenomenally pleasant, he just kept petting her head and back.
"Cute…" Ron muttered quietly, before he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. It was the little Pokémon Cinder had hurt, currently staring up at him. "What's up?" the blonde asked, before noticing the empty plate in front of the creature. "Do you want seconds?"
The small Pokémon hopped up and down on its two barely-visible legs, looking very pleased- only to instantly freeze and shake in fear, as Cinder started hissing at it. "Cinder…" Ron warned, before petting her again briefly.
The young Stoppable rose from his spot, preparing a second plate for both of them. He was about to do the same for himself- only to pause, hearing some chattering and different sounds emanating from behind him. Turning around, Ron spotted a few different Pokémon standing several feet away… staring at him curiously.
'Don't tell me…' he groaned silently, before grabbing a few more plates and pouring away. "Here you go…" Ron offered, the Pokémon taking the invitation and quickly wolfing down the tasty treat.
There were a few small, bear-like things with leaves in their mouths. On his right were several creatures that looked like seagulls, along with a few unique Pokémon. 'It feels like I'm back in the school cafeteria…' the blonde joked to himself, a few new Pokémon moving closer as well. They were clearly curious about the smell, as well as the small gathering of various different Pokémon.
'Well… why not? I still have a lot of supplies left, this really shouldn't be an issue…' Ron concluded, starting to work on a second batch.
About half an hour later, he was finally done. Ron inspected the many different Pokémon currently resting around his camp, as well as a few that were nuzzling him. In the end, he'd used up a large portion of his supplies to feed all of them. Ron was amazed by the many different types of Pokémon… The most notable was a huge rock worm a few TIMES bigger than himself- but it had still been quite pleasant and gentle, as it waited its turn.
Cinder had seen fit to curl up on Ron's lap, appearing to be sleeping peacefully after her meal. The blonde was gently scratching his Pokémon behind her ears.
Everything considered… it wasn't bad at all. 'I wonder if I'll ever be able to show this place to Kim… she would LOVE it…'
Now finished with the food break, Ron packed up his camp. The various wild Pokémon disappeared, heading back to their homes. Many of them gave Ron berries, or simply showed him their appreciation of the food with their happy expressions.
"Okay! Now that that's done with… shall we get a move on- huh?" Ron questioned, spotting a familiar Pokémon that was still there and seemed to be waiting. 'It's the one Cinder attacked…' the blonde recalled, before remembering the app on his Rotom Phone. 'It was called Pokedex, I think?'
Fishing the device out, he pointed it at the small Pokémon in front of him. The screen changed, an image appearing. 'Bounsweet?' Ron read, noting that it was a grass-type.
"What's wrong, are you still hungry?" he asked, staring at the small Pokémon.
The small Bounsweet started hopping towards him, before jumping into Ron's hands. "Huh?! What are you-" his question cut off, as the small thing began nuzzling into his chest. "So… you forgive me and Cinder? I'm glad to hear it!" Ron exclaimed with a smile. He set the small thing down on the ground, petting it a few times on its petaled head.
Before he was even able to rise back up the Bounsweet quickly jumped back into his embrace, staring him in the face. 'Does it want to come with me?' Ron wondered. The thing started making sounds- which, oddly enough, sounded like its own name.
"Do you want to join us?" Ron assumed, the small Pokémon instantly smiling at the blonde teen. At that moment, he heard a familiar sound coming from his partner.
Cinder was next to him, staring at the small Bounsweet, anger clear on her face. She even yelped aggressively, the small grass Pokémon nuzzling into his arms even more intensely than before.
"Cinder, cut it out, you're scaring him…" The Bounsweet in Ron's arms stared at him once more, tears in its yellow eyes, pouting fiercely. "Not a him?" Ron received a nod from the small Pokémon. "Okay, okay… you're a girl too… and you want to join us-" His words were cut off, Cinder growling at them once more.
The Bounsweet nuzzled into Ron's stomach. "Well, if you're sure you want to…" The Bounsweet seemed to approve when Ron pulled out a free ball from his belt, presenting it to the small Pokémon.
In a flash of light, the Bounsweet disappeared into the pokeball… it closed with an audible click.
Ron smiled before he triggered the ball once more, letting his newest Pokémon out with a familiar flash.
The small Bounsweet stared happily at her new trainer, the teen pondering recent events before speaking. "Hmmm… so, do you want me to give you a name- like Cinder? Or, do you want me to call you Bounsweet?"
The small, round Pokémon started jumping up and down in excitement. Its answer was pretty obvious.
"Okay… so, what do I call you?" A few names popped into Ron's head, most of them obvious ones… like Cherry, or Sweet. But, Ron thought that those sounded like stripper names… clearly a no-go.
The small Bounsweet suddenly jumped up, nuzzling into his arms again. She started shaking and crying, Ron realizing the reason for her behavior was next to his feet. 'Cinder again? What's her problem, anyway?'
He'd have to sort that out later… But, for now, he had to come up with a name…
Staring at the crying Pokémon, Ron recalled the first time he'd seen her. It had been with tears in her eyes, after Cinder had attacked her in the bushes (and had been scaring her ever since).
'Wait… that it!' The blonde patted the Bounsweet, she looked up at him. "I've got it, your name! I'll call you… Tear!" Ron shouted excitedly.
Tear took a moment to processes her new name. She seemed to approve, the moisture in her eyes disappearing. She smiled and nuzzled into his side even harder than before, all while Cinder growled at her.
'I'm sure it'll be fine…' the young teen thought to himself.
