Wrote a short little fic to dip my toe into the Shang-Chi fandom and also because I adore the Xialing and Katy ship. You really shouldn't read this if you don't ship Xialing and Katy. Maybe I'll write a follow-up second chapter at some point but for now, I'm listing this as a one-shot.
Sorry if I got any of the names wrong I got all of them from the wiki basically.
"Morning, Mrs. Chen, is Katy ready?" Shang-Chi asked, taking his seat next to Waipo.
"I'm coming!" Was the immediate reply, Katy zipping out of her bedroom and grabbing her spot at the table. The table was set for an extra person but Shang-Chi didn't seem to notice.
"Have you met Katy's new friend?" Waipo asked.
"What?" That caught him off guard.
"Oh, uh, there's something I should tell you," Katy started, before Xialing walked into the kitchen.
"Good morning Mrs. Chen, Waipo, Ruihua."
"What are you doing here?" Shang-Chi stood abruptly, staring at his sister. She looked more laid back than he had ever seen her, and she was wearing Katy's clothes.
"Katy and I had a sleepover," Xialing said calmly.
"It's so nice that Katy has more close female friends now," Mrs. Chen interjected. Katy and Xialing exchanged a look, smiling to themselves.
"You came all the way from China for a sleepover?"
"I also came to see my brother."
"Did you mention it to him?"
"It's a surprise visit."
"I'm certainly surprised."
"What's going on?" Ruihua asked.
"Xialing is my sister," Shang-Chi explained, crossing his arms and practically glaring at his sister, who was unfazed.
"Oh! I didn't know you had a sister. Especially not one so lovely and considerate as Xialing," Mrs. Chen said.
Shang-Chi turned on his best friend now, "You didn't think that was important to mention to your family?"
"I was gonna tell them. I was gonna tell you. It's just been busy." Katy shrugged and looked away, playing with her food.
"I bet. Thank you for breakfast, Mrs. Chen, but we should really be going now."
"I haven't even eaten, yet," Xialing protested.
"Take it to go."
"Fine, big baby. I don't know why this is such a big deal."
Inwardly Shang-Chi was stewing, but he did not rise to take his sister's bait until they were outside.
"So. How long have you two been having sleepovers?" He asked through gritted teeth when they were a little ways away from Katy's home.
"Do you mean sleepover in a literal sense or as an innuendo?" Katy asked.
"What do you think?" Shang-Chi asked, sounding frustrated.
"Oh. Well, I've been having innuendos with your sister since we met."
"That was several months ago! Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because we thought you would be weird about it, and you are, so we were right," Xialing said.
"You're both adults if you want to have sleepovers you can have sleepovers. The part that upsets me is that you didn't tell me. Katy, we're best friends. Xialing, I'm your brother!"
"You abandoned me for ten years. The only thing we have in common is our parentage and Katy."
"Ouch," Katy said quietly.
Shang-Chi turned to her, looking distraught, "You really weren't going to tell me?"
"We're all entitled to our secrets, Shaun. It really wasn't about you. I'm sorry, it wasn't the right time to tell you but I was going to, eventually." Katy looked down again, not feeling bad for her decision but hoping it wouldn't create a rift between them.
He took a deep breath, "Fair enough. Just take care of each other, okay? I really love both of you, and when you're ready to tell me everything you know where to find me." He shoved his hands in his pockets and walked off.
"Huh," Xialing said when they were alone, "He took that surprisingly well."
"He's not so bad, you know," Katy said, bumping her shoulder against Xialing's and offering a little smile.
"He's growing on me."
"Am I growing on you?" Katy asked, wrapping her arms around Xialing and giving her puppy dog eyes.
"Yeah, like a parasite." Xialing leaned down slightly to kiss Katy's lips, causing shivers to run down Katy's spine.
Watching from the shadows, Shang-Chi smiled, no longer as worried about his sister and best friend. When they wanted to talk to him about everything, if they wanted to talk to him about everything, they would. But for now, he was just happy that they had each other. That was enough.
