I finally got the chance to write a New Year's Eve chapter, which means I've covered all the major holidays except for Valentine's day, but I headcanon that (in JB) Louie and Boyd don't celebrate Valentine's day themselves (they probably celebrate with Mo) because their dating and engagement anniversary is so close to Valentine's day.
Speaking of Anniversaries, this is the eight-month anniversary of JB and I think that's pretty rad.
There was something deeply comforting about the start of a new year. The chance to start over, scrub away the past mistakes, and make the next 365 days better than the last. At least, that was Louie's approach. He used to dread the start of a new year, with the resolutions he couldn't keep and the spiral he'd begin anew. Finding Boyd and Mo had changed all that. He still had rough years, this one hadn't exactly been the easiest, but he saw each new year as a chance instead of a challenge.
"Next year's going to be better," He'd promised to Boyd several times already that evening. Their family was milling about the party with the exception of Jules who was hiding and Mo who was recharging his social battery before midnight.
"You know this year wasn't all that bad," Boyd replied, wrapping his arms around Louie and cuddling into his soft sweater.
"There were too many close calls this year," Louie said with a frown, "You got shot, Mo got hurt, and…" Louie still didn't like talking about what happened on Mo's birthday, though they'd been working through it as a family.
"Growing pains," Boyd said with a small shrug.
"Not all of that was growing pains."
"Yeah, but changes happen. Look at Dewey and Angelo, for instance, or Gosalyn and Scarlett. Neither of them is psyched about their kids growing up and going off to do their own thing but they've come to accept it as a part of parenthood."
"I don't even want to think about that part of parenthood," Louie said grumpily, watching Dewey and Angelo, practically joined at the hip until Angelo inevitably had to leave in early January.
"All I'm saying is that Mo is growing up. Of course, things are going to change. I think it's good that he knows the truth."
"Yeah, but telling the truth is so hard."
"You're getting really good at it, though."
"Aww, really?" Louie asked, inviting a kiss. Boyd easily took the bait.
"Really."
"You know what the best part of the new year is?" Louie asked.
"Hors d'oeuvres?"
"You're so cute. But no, the best part of the new year is that it's another year I get to have with you and Mo."
"You're so cheesy!"
"It's cute though, right?"
"Adorable." They shared another kiss before hearing someone clear their throat.
"Didn't know the staircase was the place to make out," DJ said with a laugh, holding on to her partner's hand.
"We were, uh, we were just going upstairs to check on Mo."
"Sure, Uncle Boyd."
"Hi, DJ, hi, Spencer," Louie said with an awkward smile.
"Hi Mr. Gearloose-Duck," Spencer said, running a hand through their hair and chuckling nervously.
"Sorry, my whole family is weird, you get used to it," DJ said.
"I like it," Spencer said, eyes drawn to her lips.
"Well! We'll leave you two lovebirds alone. Come on, Boyd." Louie led his husband upstairs to check on Mo, turning Boyd's lie into a truth.
Mo was sitting in Azure's old room, in the dark, so Boyd and Louie almost missed him.
"You can come in," Mo said quietly, surprising his dads.
"Do you want the light off?"
"It doesn't matter," Mo said. Louie switched the lights on and Mo squinted up at his dads.
"Hey."
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine, I was just a little drained." Mo made no move to get up, hinting that he was still drained.
"Do you mind if we hang out with you for a bit?" Boyd asked.
"Don't you want to party?" Mo asked.
"When you've been to one Duck Family New Year's Eve Party you've been to them all. I think your dad and I would rather hang out with you," Louie said.
Mo grinned, unable to help himself.
"You're so cheesy, pop."
"That's what I said!" Boyd laughed, and the two squatted on either side of Mo, leaning against Azures's old bed. Louie sat down on something hard and pulled a train from under him.
"I think I got them this," Louie said thoughtfully, turning it over in his hand.
"I'm pretty sure Azure's train phase only lasted a week," Mo laughed, taking the train and rolling it over his knees.
"Yeah, but he went through so many phases, it was impossible to tell. And none of the younger niblings ever got into trains so I guess they never got rid of them."
"I need to get rid of some stuff," Mo said thoughtfully.
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. You're not gonna believe this, but I am not as into the Cars franchise anymore."
"Oh thank goodness," Boyd said abruptly, "Finally."
"What?" Mo laughed in surprise.
"I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want to hurt your feelings but I've always hated the Cars franchise."
Mo gasped, "How many terrible secrets am I going to learn about you before the year is over?"
"How about no more secrets for a while," Louie suggested.
"I think I've earned the right to keep some secrets," Mo said with a shrug.
"Just as long as you're not going through our phones again," Boyd said pointedly.
"Deal."
"And you're not doing anything dangerous," Louie added hastily.
Mo hesitated.
"Morio."
"I'll try to stay out of danger! But this family doesn't exactly do that. And if I get a chance to go on an adventure with a handsome vampire then I'm going to do it."
"You're not allowed to date until you're sixteen," Louie reminded.
"What if the vampire is really handsome though?"
"If it's a handsome vampire you're not allowed to date until you're 18," Boyd said.
"You guys are so uncool."
"Just looking out for you, Mo."
"My resolution is to run away with a really handsome vampire," Mo said.
"My resolution is to kill a really handsome vampire," Boyd said.
"Joke resolutions aside, I am really looking forward to spending this coming year with both of you. I'm hoping we can be even closer as a family. I want us to be honest with each other and I know that starts with me," Louie said.
Mo smiled at his pop, silent for a moment.
"You don't have to keep beating yourself up, pop. I know you know what you did was shitty. It changed me but I know we've come out better for it. I love both of you. We can try to start fresh this year."
Tears stung Louie's eyes, "I love you too, Mo."
"I love both of you, you're the most important things in the world to me," Boyd said, wrapping them both up in a hug before adding, "Don't say shitty, Mo."
"You're right, it was fucked."
"Morio."
"My New Year's Resolution is to get you to stop freaking out every time I swear."
"We'll talk about it later," Louie said before his husband and son could get into a dumb argument over curse words.
"Do you want to go back down to the party now?" Mo asked.
"You want to?"
"I think so. I'm gonna see what Azure remembers about trains."
"Alright, you go ahead."
Mo darted downstairs and Louie and Boyd scooted closer to each other.
"It's going to be a good year," Louie said.
"Better than this one?" Boyd asked, resting his forehead against Louie's.
"Maybe, maybe not. But that doesn't matter, does it?"
"Nope."
"We're going to be together, and that's all that's ever mattered."
