Anyway. Today marks the SIX YEAR anniversary of when I first posted this story! I want to thank everybody who has read it so far.

Chapter 53 Healer

Mal's POV

The Next Morning

I was standing in the middle of the river on a stone.

"So", I started. "What am I supposed to do anyway?"

"I want you to focus on the energy of the sun", Conall revealed. "The Phoenix is said to have gotten its power from the sun. That means you'll have to charge your Phoenix powers before you can use them."

"If Mal's powers are charged by the sun, does that mean that they won't work at nighttime", Evie asked.

"Not exactly", Conall replied. "From what I understand. It works like a battery. Meaning that Mal can store the energy to use when the sun isn't out."

"So I should limit how much I use the power when the sun isn't out", I asked.

"Precisely", Conall replied. "Self control is the key to controlling the power of the Phoenix. If you don't have any, you will be overpowered by it."

One Hour Later

Conall has taken me to the top of a mountain.

"What are we doing here for", I asked.

"We are here to do breathing exercises", Conall revealed.

"Breathing exercises", I asked in shock.

"I know it sound mundane", Conall started. "But remember what I said before? Self control is the key to controlling the power of the Phoenix, and breathing exercises are a good way to learn self control."

One Hour Later

Conall and I were now back by the river.

"I am very proud of you Mal", he stated. "You have been very patient, and now...we can begin tapping into your power."

With that...Conall gave me a leaf...and lit a fire in the centre of it!

"Focus on the fire", he commanded. "Try to keep it from reaching the ends of the leaf for as long as you can. I need to go do something, but I'll be back soon."

"You're leaving me to do this all by myself", I asked in shock.

"You'll be fine", Conall reassured. "Just focus."

With that...Conall left...and I continued to focus on my leaf.

"I'm not sure if I can do this", I stated.

"It's okay Mal", Jane reassured as she walked up to me. "You'll be fine. Just concentrate."

With that...I tried to do as told...but the flame began to grow!

"It's getting bigger", I said in fear.

"It's okay", Jane reassured. "Just stay calm."

"I'm not sure if I can", I revealed.

"Yes you can", Jane reassured. "Just stay calm."

But I couldn't. No matter how much I tried...the flame kept on getting bigger and bigger.

"What do I do", I asked in fear.

Then...Jane did something very brave.

With her bare hand...she shoved the leaf out of my hands and into the water!

Then...she clenched her hand in pain.

There was now a burn on it.

"Jane", I said as I held her hand. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine", Jane replied.

"What happened", Carlos asked in concern as he ran up to us.

"Jane pushed the burning leaf out of my hands", I revealed. "I'm so sorry Jane."

"It's fine", Jane stated. "It's just a little burn."

Then...something amazing happened.

Jane's burn glowed a bright white, and when it disappeared...the burn was gone!

"Jane", I said in shock. "Your burn. It's gone."

"How did you do that", Carlos asked.

"She has healing abilities", Conall revealed as he walked back up to us.

"Healing abilities", Jane asked in shock.

"Yes", Conall replied before holding Jane's hands. "I wish I was born with these kinds of abilities instead of the abilities of darkness."

One Hour Later

My group and I were getting ready to leave.

"Here", Conall said before giving me a book. "This book will help teach you to control your Phoenix powers."

"Are you sure that I'll be able to do this without you", I asked.

"As long as you remember self control, you'll be fine", Conall reassured. "And if things go wrong...you have a healer in your group."
