Chapter 4 : Renegade
Week 1 Days Remaining : 2
Evening
As Hakuno is about to enter the Arena and train. It felt like she ran into a wall and was flung backwards. Upon closer inspection, it seems someone has put a barrier that forbids them from entering the dungeon. "Someone does not want a fair fight. It can only be one person…" Joker murmurs behind her while in his spirit form.
Oh she knows very well who he's talking about.
"Hey there! Looks like you've been hitting the Arena pretty hard. Toughen up yet?" Speaking of the devil, here he is with the signature smirk on his face. "I was bored, so I decided to set up a few little surprises here and there. My bad." Shinji admitted the crime and shrugged his shoulders.
"I'm actually doing a bottom feeding Masters like Hakuno a favour. The Arena is a pretty dangerous place." His smirk turned into a malicious smile. "Remember yesterday? My Servant almost killed yours. I'm sure that will put a tape on his sassy mouth."
Seeing the troubled expression on her, Shinji couldn't help but to chuckle. "But if you must enter the Arena, you'll need to track down the two sigils I set. However, once you make it inside, I'll crush you like a cockroach. Show up if you dare." He said dauntingly, giving him more bravado compared to before.
"See you later. Oh, and where are the magic sigils, you ask? Find them yourself, loser!" With that insult, the man left, leaving the sound of his cocky laugh echoing in the hallway.
"He seems more confident than before." Her Servant noted his observation over Shinji's recent behaviour. "That's good." The smile on Joker's face was not to compliment the young man's courage. It was for something else. "Regardless, the door is sealed, but it's actually an anomaly in the area's programming code. These sigils are like tributaries feeding a river. Unless we block the flow, the seal will remain."
"Taxing though it may be, we must find the two locations where he placed those sigils." Giving her a smile of encouragement, Hakuno nodded and proceeded to solve the issue they are facing. Still where does Shinji hide the sigils? It's obviously not inside the Arena. Then it must be somewhere inside the campus.
Talking to the nearby NPCs and Masters, they gave her useful information about Shinji's earlier activity. One of them said that they saw him loitering in front of the Nurse Office. Hakuno is convinced that Shinji may choose that place to hide one of the two sigils.
Standing before the door of the Nurse office. Hakuno saw a glowing sigil in between the doors. Ripping it with bare hands, she easily deleted one of the sigils that Shinji made to stop them from entering the Arena. "That is one down, good job. Only one left, let's check where he's been skulking." Joker said.
Continuing the search. Hakuno found Rin having a conversation with Shinji. Though she does not want to make eavesdropping a hobby of hers, however, it's very important to get as much information as she can against everyone.
"My my my...Did she manage to do that to you? It seems your reputation is grossly inflated." Rin's comment made Shinji's body startled.
"Wha-?! She has no chance against me! I trash both her and that weak Servant of hers. I just decided to go easy on them and thought I'd throw them a bone. But my Servant will blow them full of holes soon enough!" He replied with a hint of cold sweat building on his head.
However, Rin does not buy anything he says. "Oh, how thoughtful of you." She said in sarcasm. "Then I take it the defeated look on your face is an act? I don't want to be harsh but you suck"
Shinji looked very offended by what the girl said. "The power of my Rider's culverin is unrivalled! I can rip anyone to shreds in an instant!" Listening to what Shinji is saying, Hakuno could only let out a deep sigh. Some people do not realise or learn from their mistakes.
He even reveals his Servant class against Rin Tohsaka of all people!
"A culverin, you say? It certainly must be...strong. Your precious embodiment of evil, that is."
Shinji laughs, oblivious to everything. "When it comes time for us to fight, it'll be too late to beg for mercy." The man turns around and leaves. Hakuno quickly hides in the restroom to avoid getting seen by her opponent.
"Unfortunately, I don't believe that we'll ever get the chance to face one another." She heards Rin's voice outside the room. When Hakuno got out, the girl was nowhere to see as well. Shinji's ignorance reminded her of what Joker's lesson was the other day.
Deciding to continue her search. Hakuno entered the library. Perhaps she'll find the sigils here and find a book about Rider. It will be two birds in one stone. Probing to the book shelves. She may not still have found the last sigils but the girl stumbles upon a book about the Golden Hind.
A 16th century English galleon. Originally named -Pelican-, the ship's name was changed to reflect the crest of it's chief benefactor. Many accounts place it at the location of a number of raids against Spaniards shipping interests.
She's getting closer in discerning Rider's identity. Once that was revealed, then she and Joker can make a plan against her. Though Hakuno can spend the day researching, however, training inside the Arena is far more important. They need to get stronger.
Entering their classroom. One of her classmates said something about Shinji activity on his desk. Following the information directed at, she easily found the sigil on top of Shinji's desk. Repeating what she did to the last one, the sigils that created the barrier are now deleted.
"Well that was easy." Hakuno said to herself.
"Indeed it was. What he did is not a hindrance but an annoyance on our part. Nevertheless, let's head to the Arena, we need to gauge his Servant's parameters if there are any changes." Joker commented. Not being paranoid but a slightest change at Rider's parameters may cause difficulties on their side.
Joker knew that Rider had better stats compared to him at this moment. It's a gap that he must make sure isn't out of reach. And the only way to do that is by fighting her.
Making haste to the first floor end hallway. Hakuno then saw Shinji murmuring to himself. "Hmph. They got here faster than I expected. But all that means is they didn't collect many treasures." He said before entering the Arena.
Treasures? What does he mean by that?
Curious on what it was. They head inside the Arena. Time to finish a day with a daily grind of training.
Week 1 Days Remaining : 2
Night
Another day of their hard training has finished. After getting everything they can on the Arena floor, Hakuno and Joker head to their private room to call it a day. However, they found it strange that they didn't encounter Shinji inside the Arena today. Did they miss each other?
Recalling what she heard from him earlier. What does he mean by 'didn't collect many treasures?'
Confused on what it was, Hakuno asks her Servant what he thinks about it. "I honestly have no idea either, however, he's up to something that's for sure. It's important I'm going to assume, after all, he did all that work just to stop us from finding out what he is going to do." He explained.
"Nevertheless, whether you like it or not, I must remind you that there is only one day of prep period left to acquire the triggers and train. Remain diligent tomorrow, and you will thank yourself in the Elimination battle." Joker added.
He's right. The day of the elimination is just around the corner.
Though their preparation against Shinji and his Servant are near completion. All that is left is to reveal Rider's identity and figure out how they will counter this 'Code Cast' that Shinji has.
The Code Cast he often uses is called [Shock(32)]. And from Joker's experience it has an explosive power similar to a hand grenade, a direct hit from this Code Cast is enough to inflict damage and stun a Servant momentarily.
Joker reassure that he can manage to avoid the attack as long as Shinji doesn't take him by surprise. But if such an occurrence happened and he was stunned by it, it's going to be a disaster, and that is making her worried.
What if that happened? How can she respond?
It's a shame to admit, but she doesn't know how to use this 'Code Cast'. The scarf she looted inside the Arena the other day has one installed inside. Rin also explained to her how they function. She tried using it against the attack programs roaming inside the training ground, however, nothing happened.
Perhaps she is doing it wrong? Or maybe she has none of this 'Magical Circuits' that is needed to activate it. If that is the case, then she is the only one here in this war who's inexperienced about it.
Her Servant didn't say anything negative about it and tried to cheer her up. But Hakuno is very much aware that it's a disadvantage that she must overcome if she ever wants to get out of this war.
Tomorrow she will give her maximum effort on learning how to use it. Besides, it's a waste to throw away a beautiful scarf. Not only is it cosy to wear but she has a feeling that the power inside it will definitely help them to win.
Moving on, she took the portable terminal given to her and looked through the records about Joker. The result of their training made her Servant parameters grow much better than before. His [Agility] and [Luck] are closer to becoming B rank, his [Strength] and [Endurance] will become D rank soon, his [Magic] is still in E rank and still far from going up.
Yet despite that, her Servant is confident and satisfied in the outcome of their hard work. Joker thanked Hakuno for helping him grow stronger. Which was very much appreciated by the young girl.
Additionally, the Alteration of the Soul gives him enough power to unlock abilities that were sleeping in his domain. He explained two types of skill, one is tied to a Servant spirit core called [Personal Skill] and the other is tied to a Servant class called [Class Skill].
The Class Skill he unlocked is called [Chimera (Rank : E)] It allows a Pretender to change class at will, they can choose which class to become and acquire one of that chosen class natural skill to use. The rank of the Class skill they choose will be in the same rank as their [Luck].
However, there are drawbacks when using this skill. Their parameters will suffer a rank down except for the [Luck] stats, unable to use the rest of their original class skill, and will quickly drain their powers the longer they use this skill.
None of his Personal Skill is yet to unlock. It seems that by visiting the church a couple more times, they will not only enhance her Servant's parameters but also wake up abilities sleeping in his domain. Hakuno asks Joker about this ability he unlocked. "This will certainly help us in our battle against Shinji and Rider." Joker answered with excitement.
"But in all honesty, it's not the one I was expecting." Seeing the puzzled look on her face. He tried to reassure her with a smile. "Don't get me wrong. It was a surprise for sure, still and all, a welcome one." He said.
"What sort of ability were you expecting?"
Joker put a finger under his chin to ponder her question. There is a lot he learned from the special confidants he luckily encountered in his life. It's hard to list them all. The ability to negotiate, tactical and strategic prowess, even control over his own mind, and many more. All the skills he acquired from them helped him throughout his journey.
"Something over the top?" Joker chuckled softly. "I'm kidding. I'm not really sure." All of them are special to him. They are his precious treasure, his memento of them now that they are not on his side. He doesn't want to pick which one is the best or not. Each one helps him in some way or other.
"It doesn't really matter what skill or abilities I get. Because there is one thing I learned from my experience. One must know whatever tools he has and be proficient with it."
The confidence in his voice really does make anyone trust his words.
"On that topic about skills and abilities. Our enemy Servant also has this set of skills with them." The raven-haired Servant wants to keep the topic on discussion. "Rider for example has a Class Skill as well. They have a natural skill called Riding and Magic Resistance."
"The Riding skill is what makes a Rider class dangerous. It gives them the ability to operate vehicles and mounts. Making them more powerful when they're riding any form or shapes of mounts."
"We must make sure that Rider won't be able to utilise this skill or else we will be in trouble. After all, their Noble Phantasm and power is commonly tied to the vehicles they rode."
For someone who said that he's new to this Servant business. It amazes Hakuno on how much he knows in this war. But something he said caught the girl's attention and she couldn't help but to ask. "Wait, you said Noble Phantasm right? What is that?" She asks.
"Let's just say they are a powerful form of attack. I'll explain it to you some other day." Joker replied. "Continuing, the Magic Resistance skill grants them protection against magical effects. The higher the rank of this skill is, the more powerful magical attacks they can nullify."
"Since my parameter in Magic is rather low. I doubt any form of magecraft I know will do much damage to her. So we are mostly going to fight Rider through physical means. Having said all of that. Be aware that every class has a different skill. Knowing what they are and what they can do will give us an edge in a tougher battle."
"So it does tie and compliment their class, huh." Hakuno said with a nod of understanding towards Joker. "Correct me if I'm wrong. But I'm assuming the Class Skill you have right now will make it more difficult for our opponent to figure out your class correctly?" There is almost little chance that someone will figure out his class.
The Pretender class has an ability to pretend into a different class. No pun intended.
"You're not wrong." Joker replied. "One of our key successes in this war is to not let our enemy know what my class is and my identity secret as well. We will keep deceiving them until the very end and thus take advantage of their ignorance." Seeing the evil smirk on his face, Hakuno couldn't help but to wonder if her Servant was a devious villain all along.
But that seems to be the game plan they must follow in this war.
Still being an Extra class, he thinks this extra layer of protection is too much, he doubts anyone can figure it out unless they accidentally slip that information. Added to that he is rather worried about the drawback of using the skill. Especially on the side of his Master. After all, she's the one supplying him the energy to use.
"Still that was perceptive of you. Despite your unassuming look. You're pretty sharp." The young man jest.
"Hey!" What does he mean by that!? She's not unassuming...well most of the time.
"Kidding. How about you rest now. I'm going out for a walk." With that said, he gave her goodbye before exiting the room. Hakuno couldn't help but to wonder where he was going. He always does this before she sleeps.
He's aware of the risk of doing it but he keeps doing it. Just where does he usually go in this walk? Perhaps she should follow him next time. But for now, she needs to get a good amount of sleep and finish the preparation tomorrow.
Standing before the door leading to the student council room. The drawing feeling he's getting whenever he sees the door is still there. It's been days and he still does not know the reason behind it. Whenever he tried to go inside, it felt like someone was watching his back.
'Who could it be?' Joker wondered. Perhaps one of the NPC? A Master? Or maybe a Servant. But what is waiting behind the door is what bugging him the most. His mind and heart began to race again. Just what is causing him this feeling? The reason why is he getting drawn to this particular room?
Preoccupied with his thoughts. He startled after turning around and seeing a hooded figure standing before him. This presence, it's definitely a Servant, and that gaze it gives him. Is this figure the one watching him?
"It's you again." From the sound of the voice, it seems to belong to a woman. "I advise you to keep this tour minimal. You might cause trouble to the residence on this floor." She said before looking pass at the door behind him. "And the student council room is prohibited for anyone to enter."
"Keep that in mind or you will suffer the consequences."
'This room was prohibited for anyone including the NPC part of the council?' Joker thought. It's making him suspicious knowing that. But he doesn't want to pry more since it may cause trouble to him and his Master.
"Sorry for causing you and your Master trouble." He said apologetically. It must bother her every night he went to this floor. The woman shakes her head in acceptance.
"It was nothing." The woman said. "You didn't cause any trouble to my Master. I don't have one." What she said made Joker look at her puzzled. "There is nothing to worry about. I am no one's enemy. I'm just like the NPC here watching the event of the Holy Grail War and making sure that it will proceed without any hindrance."
She then turned around and about to leave. "I'll be going now. Good night." The woman said and left. He wonders who that Masterless Servant is? And just standing before her, he can feel incredible power radiating from her, perhaps she's more powerful than him and Rider combined.
"No one's enemy, huh?" Is that true? Shaking his head, he better return to their private room. Tomorrow will be the last day where they can train inside the Arena before the match between them against Shinji.
Week 1 Days Remaining : 1
Midday
"Thank you very much for giving my beloved Shinai back!"
To return the shinai to its rightful owner, that was Joker's request to her yesterday. Though she was willing to return it to her teacher, seeing Ms. Fujimura joyously thanked her by shaking their hand excitedly. There was a warm and cosy feeling inside alongside the genuine smile on Hakuno's face.
Though the request was quite odd. But Joker seems to have a good reason for asking it. She also wanted to hear more about the friend he told her about. Something about them being a prisoner of fate made her very curious.
So before afternoon came. Hakuno searched for the well-known teacher around the campus. Though she finds her looking troubled on the first floor bulletin board. Since everyone is busy preparing for the coming elimination round and no one bothers talking to an NPCs other than asking them basic questions about the Holy Grail War. They pretty much ignore her.
Ms. Fujimura is a kind hearted person before and after the preliminaries. Though she may not be a real human and is only created inside this virtual space as an observer. But compared to everyone on this campus, she was one of the most sincere among them all.
The teacher is looking for her kendo stick. And luckily she already had the item with her. But that raises a question on Hakuno's mind. Ms. Fujimura was said to be the supervisor of the Archery club during the preliminaries, so why does she have a kendo sword and not a bow and arrow?
"Well I was just the club's supervisor. But Kendo is really where my passion is." Ms. Fujimura explained with a beaming smile. "This passion of mine almost led me to fame in sports! But sadly I got disqualified in this official tournament."
Is that true or just what the story that Moon Cell gives to her.
"Eh? What happened?" Hakuno asks the now sheepish woman.
"Well it's all because of this." She pointed at the tiger strap hanging on the weapon. "In the world of kendo, that was considered bad manners. I only did that to show everyone the result of my training." The woman then gave a half smile. "I hate how everyone mocks me and calls me "Tiger". I hate how my name is Taiga."
"But then I realise how in some cultures, a tiger symbolises dignity, ferocity, sternness, and courage. It really does fit me, but not in the mocking way!" Ms. Fujimura exclaimed at the end.
"I need to think of something to reward you." The woman began to ponder. Though Hakuno was about to suggest that she didn't want anything in return. But Ms. Fujimura beats on her own drum. "Say, are you perhaps interested in learning the arts of kendo?"
"Learn kendo?" Among those she anticipated, she didn't expect this offer. "Won't this cause you trouble? Helping a Master?" Hakuno asks.
"Nah~ it's fine. I don't see any unfairness from teaching you kendo." The teacher answered. "But knowing everyone has a tight schedule. How about next week? If you, you know."
Thinking about whether or not to accept her request. Joker speaks behind her. "Ms. Fujimura seems like a talented swordsman. Maybe you could learn a thing from her. Though we need to win the elimination round first." He commented.
Now that she thinks about it, Ms. Fujimura did say that kendo almost led her to fame. Which means she's good with the sport. Then maybe if she did learn from her, then maybe their fight in the arena would be more lighter.
"Sure, I accept the offer sensei." Hakuno answered.
"Great! Then the lesson starts next week! See you at the archery dojo!" Ms. Fujimura smiles widely in joy.
Learning kendo, huh? This is gonna be her first time getting involved in sports or any sorts. Not gonna lie, she's quite excited about it. Still they must first win the coming elimination round first.
And the gravity of the coming event is weighing on her shoulder. Kill or be killed. Is that how things are going to be?
Week 1 Days Remaining : 1
Evening
Now that they have the two cipher keys, not only are they qualified to enter the elimination round, but they can also acquire the information where the duel will take place. So before heading to the Arena, Hakuno visited the church first and talked to the two residents inside.
Showing the two keys at Aoko, the crimson-haired woman gave her an impressed look on her face. "Well done at getting this. I'm sure you are now eager to learn about the place of the event for tomorrow, yes?" She said before snapping her finger and suddenly a holographic topography of the ruined city below the floors of the Arena appeared.
"As you can see, the city is surrounded by walls, stopping the large body of water from submerging it completely." Aoko began to explain with a smile. "But the fun part begins every 5 minutes. The city will sink further every time that happens. You just have 15 minutes before the entirety of the city drowns."
"15 minutes?" Hakuno let out a surprise. That amount of time seems so short. And remembering how tall those walls are, the entire city will turn into an ocean. "Is there a way to stop it?" She asks.
Aoko shakes her head. "None, this event is inevitable. So I suggest you either finish your opponent quickly or have a boat or something in case the time limit ends." She let out a chuckle, noticing the troubled expression on Hakuno's face.
"Well this is a problem. Shinji and his Servant have a field advantage." Joker commented behind her. There is no doubt in their mind that Rider can summon a ship in case the city sinks. When that happens, without a ground, it will be impossible for him to fight the Servant.
"Well on the bright side. There is no land fame in this field. So you don't have to worry about that boost. Since it doesn't exist in reality."
"Land fame?" Hakuno asks, causing the redhead woman to laugh.
"You're a real amateur aren't you?" She said before wiping the tears on her eyes. "Land plays an important role in boosting a Servant ability. It's called the Cultural Sphere. The closer they are to the stage of their legend, a geographical boost, and the more that they are known makes them "stronger", bringing them closer to the strength they had in their legend and providing them with more of their equipment displayed in their legend." The girl explained.
Hakuno then looked at Joker. He didn't tell her anything about this. "I didn't know about it either. But we should keep this in mind for now on." Her Servant sheepishly said.
"Well that is all you need to know. So how about it? What else can I do with you?" Nodding her head, Hakuno decided to use their service in alteration before heading to the Arena and train.
Behind the corner that will lead to the Arena entrance. Hakuno stops and hides after noticing two figures standing before the dungeon door. She immediately recognized them. It was Shinji and his Servant, the pink haired Rider.
"Shinjiii! What did I say earlier? I won't work without reward." Rider crossed her arms and complained. Her blue haired Master stared in disbelief at her.
"What? You want more money? After the failure you did the other day?! Guh! You greedy money-grubber!" Shinji replied with a hint of insult toward the woman's failure yet Rider didn't mind hearing them.
"Compliment accepted. I'm a pirate mercenary. The brighter my pile of gold the more gusto behind my gun."
The man let out a defeated sigh. "All right, already! Jeez, just hold your horses!" He replied before tinkering something on his holographic keyboard and monitor. "I hacked into the Arena and got it to generate more treasure, so…" As he said that, his Servant noticed Hakuno's presence behind the corner.
"Ohh. Why hello, little girl. Fancy meeting you here." Rider greeted her with an amusing smile on her face. Shinji confusingly turned his back and was taken by surprise seeing the girl.
"Hakuno! Y-You're eavesdropping on me!?" He cried out.
"...W-Well, whatever. Now you know. Some treasure was generated on the second floor of the Arena." The man then smirks for no reason. "My Servant gets stronger the more she gets paid!"
"Well, if you want any, you better get there before me." Shinji taunted.
"Hmm. Bold words, Shinji. But can someone like you really snatch all the treasure first? No, you can't! You're nothing more than a hapless, twisted knave!" Rider comments insultingly.
"Did you just call me a knave?! You don't get to talk to me like that, you ungrateful Servant!" The irritated face on Shinji's face made his Servant laugh. Hakuno couldn't help but to compare the two as siblings. Where the older sister's entertainment is to annoy her little brother.
Clicking his tongue. Shinji returned his gaze at Hakuno. "Okay, Hakuno. Meet you there. Even if you get in there first, all the treasure will be mine!" He said while laughing as the two entered the Arena.
When they are now gone from their sight. Joker leaves his spirit form and stands beside his Master. "Interesting. So this treasure magnifies Rider's strength." He said. "It seems what Shinji did yesterday was not to annoy us but to buy him enough time to get those generated treasure for his Servant."
"I see. That makes sense." Hakuno replied. "Wait, does this mean Rider is stronger than before?" If Shinji was able to gather treasure freely yesterday. Then his Servant must have gained additional power.
"I'm afraid so." There was a bit of a troubled tone in Joker's voice. "Regardless, let's head into the Arena and stop them." But that was quickly replaced with a smirk of confidence on his face. "Afterall, I admire the trappings of wealth. Shall we adorn said finery as we weaken our enemy?"
With a nod of her head. The two entered the Arena to stop Shinji's plan.
Running through the dungeon's corridor. It didn't take a while before the two adversaries met inside. "So you came after all. Don't worry; I'll keep the extent of your greed a secret, Hakuno." Shinji greeted them while looking antsy from seeing the two. "Since we're both here, why don't we have a little competition to see who can find the most treasure?" He challenged.
"I'll be sure to go easy on you, so no need to take this thing too seriously!" But before they can make a reply or get a fair start. Shinji and his Servant already got ahead of them deep inside the Arena.
Joker grabs her hand tightly. "While I have little interest in money, I cannot allow the treasure to go ignored." He said before pulling Hakuno closer. The girl knows where this is going. "Let's go posthaste." The Servant then fired the grappling hook on his wrist before zipping and swinging through the Arena.
For now they must focus on getting the treasures and avoid unnecessary skirmishes against the attack programs roaming inside. However, they didn't expect the enemy Servant was waiting in the corner to ambush them.
"I'm sorry but you won't lay a finger on my treasures!" Rider shouted with a wide smile on her before summoning the ship's cannon behind her. "Turn to dust…!" She said before signalling the cannon to fire against the two. Joker quickly called the hook back on his waist before firing it into a different direction to avoid the attack coming their way.
Thanks to his quick reaction, they get out of danger, but forcing them to hide for cover. Which is problematic because they couldn't move forward to retrieve the treasure ahead. "This ain't good, she got a better position against us." Joker said as they felt the ground shaking from the cannons.
"Don't even bother, Hakuno! You cannot even dream of defeating me!" Shinji yelled as he was able to grab one of the treasures he generated. "Money really does make life better." He commented before they moved to the next location.
"Ahh, the feeling of treasure makes me tingly all over…" Rider said in delight. She then started shooting from behind to make it difficult for Hakuno and Joker to gain on them.
They need to find a way to get ahead of them. Because at this point, Rider will keep them in bay. "We cannot let Rider grow stronger…I need to think quickly." He murmured before clicking his tongue. "Desperate time calls for desperate measures." Joker then grabs Hakuno by her waist. "Sorry for this, but we're breaking through!"
"Eh?!" Hakuno was startled by the suddenness. There was no time to hear her protest because they were zipping much faster than ever before. They soon pass through Rider who are staring at them in disbelief that turn into a furious expression seconds later.
"Scoundrel...!" Rider shouted while aiming her gun at the two who's still in midair.
Prioritising his Master's safety above all else, he instinctively acts according to it. "Brace yourself!" He said to the stupefied girl. "Shinji catch!" As the hook flew back into the device, he threw Hakuno and twisted his body before firing it onto the floor pass behind Rider.
Shinji turned around upon hearing his name. To the boy's surprise, there was a girl's body flying toward him. "What the heck-!" He then crashed to the floor, probably lights out, from the impact of Hakuno's fall.
"Ow…" The girl whined as she rubbed the ache on her body. Glancing on her side, she saw Shinji on the floor who was in complete dizziness. "Sorry." She softly whispered before clapping her hand together in apology.
"Hakuno! Get the treasure while he's out! I'll keep his Servant busy!" Joker shouted in the midst of his battle against Rider. Seeing the treasure just waiting up ahead, the girl quickly got up to her feet and sprinted towards it.
"I got it!" She cried out in delight as the item got registered inside her portable terminal where all their items are stored. "Joker, let's move!" The girl went ahead while her Servant made a quick escape and followed her.
"Dammit." Rider cursed under her breath. Clicking her tongue, the woman approached her still passed out Master. "Wake up, kid! Our treasure is in jeopardy." She then shakes his body with her boot.
"Argh...My head…" Shinji murmured in pain before struggling to get up. "What happened?" He asks while his mind is still spinning. Last thing he remembered was Hakuno flying to him.
"There is no time to explain. We need to catch those two!" Rider said in a hurry and grabbed Shinji by his collar as they chased after Hakuno and her Servant. "Let me walk dammit!" She heard the boy's protest but ignored it entirely. They cannot let them get the last one.
Running through the hallway. There are three treasures that Shinji generated inside the Arena. Both parties have one each. While there is only one remaining. It's neck in neck at this point. "The last one should be nearby." Joker said before they reach the last open area of the dungeon.
In the middle of the room. They were surprised to know the last treasure was guarded by a hive of wasp-looking attack programs. They are agile, armed with drill-like stingers, though alone they are weak but against a group, they'll prove to be difficult to beat. There is no way they can get the treasure without them noticing their presence.
Hearing sounds of footsteps approaching. Joker quickly shielded his Master from their enemies. Shinji was about to make an insulting comment but then stopped after noticing the room ahead of them.
"What the heck?! That's a lot of them!" Shinji cried out. If he knew this spacious area was a hive of this attack program, he would choose a different place to generate the treasure. "Grrr…What now?" He said turning to Rider for her suggestion.
"Well I could just blast them to dust. But I'm sure you'd rather not reveal that thing to them, right?" The woman replied before looking at Joker. "We can leave since both parties have treasures with them. But I would like to remind you how important this payment is to me."
"In fact this last treasure is important for all of us. And we won't get it unless we deal with those pests."
"Where are you getting at?" Shinji asks.
"You want us to set aside the conflict for now and work together to clear this room, am I correct?" Hakuno's Servant replied.
"Work together!? Are you out of your mind?" Protested by the blue haired Master. "Just rain bullets on them, you worthless Servant!" He said. Rider gives him a deadpan look before firing a single bullet at the air. The sound of the gunshot turned all the attention into them.
"Now what?" Rider let out sarcastically.
"Grrr…Fine, fine!" Forcing to swallow his pride for a moment. He sent Hakuno a look telling what needed to be done. "We'll watch your six so deal with what is heading on us!" Shinji ordered.
Hakuno nodded, giving Joker the order. Her Servant summoned his dagger before dashing towards the enemies. Slashing, thrusting, cutting every attack program flying towards them. While Rider is shooting down those are within the reach of his sharp weapon.
Both Masters could only watch in awe. Seeing two Heroic Spirit destroying swarm enemies with ease. In fact, the longer they watch, the more they realise that this isn't a fight but a massacre. "Isn't my Servant more amazing than yours? She killed more than yours as well." Shinji commented.
Hakuno gave him a look of disbelief. "Didn't you see how mine swung that attack program all around the room with a grappling hook?" She argued back. That was way cooler than just pulling the trigger.
The two stared at one another intensely while there was fighting happening in the background. However, to Hakuno's surprise, Shinji looked away before crossing his arms. "Well that grappling hook does look cool." He murmured and whispered the last part under his breath. "I sorta want one when I get home…"
He sounds like a kid for a moment there. Hakuno never knew that such a side of Shinji existed. Other than being Arrogant and boastful. Anyone who met the notorious man wouldn't even believe it either.
Joker and Rider are having a quick break as they wait for the remaining enemy to make the first move. "I would say, someone like you is worth more than a whole crew of pirates, it would be nice to have you back then." The woman commented with a carefree tone.
"You do need to pay me twice the job you will offer." Joker replied in jest and made the Servant chuckle. Though hearing such praise on a Heroic Spirit is rather pleasing to receive. In all honesty, despite being one himself, he is still far from cementing himself as legendary compared to them.
"Do you accept booze as payment?" Rider offered. Looking at the enemies flying above them. They are cautious now due to the large decrease in their number. But they are still going to be a hindrance if fought alone. "Regardless, sorry about this kiddo, nothing personal." She said before shooting Joker to his right leg.
Falling into his knees, he gazes at Rider in disbelief. "I'm just following orders from my Master." The woman then walks away from him. Wounded and separated, this made the attack programs to prey on him. Grinding his teeth while enduring the pain, he made his stand against them.
"Joker!" Hakuno cried in concern.
"Well that's enough acting for today." Shinji murmured on her side while holding his laughter underneath his malicious smirk. His Servant stands beside him looking unconcerned. "I guess this is the end for you, Hakuno." He said before approaching the treasure he generated.
"Is this enough payment for you?" The man asks the Servant behind him.
"More than enough. I'm content." Rider replied in content. Once the treasury was obtained. She quickly felt the sudden burst of power flowing through her. This will make her Armada more invincible. If Shinji gives her more of this then not even the mighty sun or furious storm could stop them.
"What about them? What is your plan?" She asks.
"Hmm…" The man pondered for a moment. The malicious smirk over his face grew wider as his eyes stared at Hakuno. "We can actually beat them, right here, right now." He said. The situation right before them is just too damn perfect. Hakuno could not defend herself since her wounded Servant is fighting for his life against the attack programs.
His Servant could just pull the trigger at her and end the girl's pathetic tournament at this instant.
"Rider, main her." Shinji orders before putting a hand on his waist. "We can win in advance. It's like the universe itself brought this situation for us to grab." He smiles and faces the defenceless girl.
This is just perfect. Too perfect.
"We all knew that I'm going to win anyway. So why don't we just get into it."
Rider could in fact end the girl's life now. Win the first round before the elimination and prepare for the next. Though to the eyes of an outsider, this action is dishonourable. However, she does not believe in the concept of honour. Same to the lad that is ordering her.
Her Master is ignorant of the truth of this war, he wouldn't feel any remorse.
Her hand raised, pointing the gun its holding, and finger went to its trigger. Hakuno Kishinami, she is afraid yet brave at the same time. Was this not the first time she faced death? Or did she long accept this to happen? This young girl and Shinji are so different from each other.
One courage is forged from ego while the other is born from heart.
Quite admirable for such age. But she was here to be on Shinji's side. He is her Master, not the girl.
Perhaps this is for the best. "Goodbye…" She whispered and was about to pull the trigger. But the voice of her Master saves the girl from facing the death door. Rider glanced and looked at him.
"I know I'm gonna win but this is too easy." Shinji said with a disappointed look painted on his facade. "I win all the time. The prize and title from the tournaments I participated in was fun. But that's not what gives me satisfaction."
"Seeing the face of defeat from my opponent is what gives me that contentment." The man gave Hakuno a sharp look. "And I'm not seeing it from her. I don't like it, this is boring." He complained.
"You know what, I don't care anymore. You bore me, Hakuno." Shinji let out a sigh. "Let's leave them here. But first, I'll leave them my departing gift." His hand glows in blue light. "Loss Luck…!" He shouted and pointed at the wounded Servant.
A Code Cast that reduces Servant's luck parameters. Reducing the Servant's luck and their ability to defy fate. "Wish you best of luck…Oops that's right." Shinji chuckled at his own comment.
"You're leaving them here to die?" Rider asks.
"Pfft, die? Don't you mean lose?" He really hates whenever the woman uses words like death or dying over losing in this tournament. At first he didn't mind, but as he heard it several times, it's like a virus that spread from everyone, he's hearing this crap from everyone. Enough with the drama, it's killing the charm of this game.
"Whatever you say." The woman replied, sounding defeated.
"Well goodbye, Hakuno. You're going to hear about my victory soon." Shinji bid them farewell before leaving the room with his Servant. He wonders who his next opponent is going to be? Perhaps the high horse name Leo? Or maybe that harpy Rin Tohsaka?
Nevertheless, he's going to rekt anyone who's unfortunate enough to be their enemy.
Still in disbelief from the betrayal. She should have expected it to come and now it put them in a dire situation. Hakuno could only watch her Servant defending himself from the attack programs. There must be something she could do to help him.
But how? She can't fight, she cannot use a Code Cast, she cannot do anything. The feeling of helplessness is making her think she's useless. Distracted from her thoughts, she didn't hear the warning coming from Joker. It was too late for the girl to notice that one of the attack programs is murderously heading her way.
Hakuno could only shut her eyes off. The dreaded feeling of death creeping closer. It's just like what happened in the preliminaries. "Are you alright, Hakuno?" The voice of her Servant made the girl's eyes slowly open. "Don't panic…We can break through this…" His voice is weak, exhausted, and low.
Joker uses his body to shield her from the enemy. The attack program pierce its sting on his shoulder. She can feel his blood getting soaked on her school uniform. This is a nightmare. Her mind is racing. Her heart is beating fast. Is he going to die? Is he going to-
Is this her fault? It must be-
"Hakuno…" Her Servant whispered. "I won't let you get hurt…I'll keep that promise until the end…" The young man is doing his best to stay conscious. "I want you to use a command seal…It's the only way out of this…"
"Huh?" The girl let out in confusion. The seal on her hand? He wants her to use it on him.
"Order me to…protect you from…danger at all cost." His losing it, he cannot stay awake for long, he'll succumb to his wound soon. "It's the only way…" He won't let it happen again. Not again. "Do it…"
Fearing the swarm will attack again. There was no time for hesitation. Stretching the hand with the command spell carved in it. "By the power of the command seal given to me. I hereby order you, my Servant, to protect me from danger at all cost!" The seal shines in brightly, she can feel it burning in her skin, it's painful but endurable.
One of the three command seals then faded without a trace. Signalling the usage of the spell. The absolute command that Joker could not break. "Stay here." Despite the wound he's going through. Her Servant smiled as if there was nothing to worry about.
Joker turned around and faced the attack programs preying on them. The command seal may not heal his wound, but it gives him strength to get them out of this situation. Summoning both the dagger and gun on his hand. The raven-haired Servant looked at them defiantly.
Not again. He won't let it happen again.
But what is he preventing from happening again?
Week 1 Days Remaining : 1
Night
"Though it might be hard considering what happened today. But try to get as much sleep as you can." Joker sat on the chair looking extremely exhausted. "We'll face Shinji tomorrow. For all he's been a pain, we're lucky he's our first opponent." He commented.
"I'm referring to how tragically sloppy the guy has been with his information, of course. Let's review our information for one more time tomorrow before the Elimination battle. It's about time we reveal Rider's identity."
"Though we may have ended up using a Command Seal. Don't let it discourage you. What doesn't kill you make you stronger, correct? Let us learn from today's experience and be more cautious next time." He said.
Still what happened today is bugging his mind. In fact it's causing great concern in his heart.
Hopefully it's just in his head. There is much pressing matter to focus on.
Winning against Rider. It's payback time.
Week 1 Days Remaining : 0
Elimination Battle Begins
"Today is the Elimination Battle. I hope you're fully prepared."
When she turned around to look at the person speaking behind her, she saw Kotomine standing there. Right, the Elimination Battle is today-a day that will be the last for either Shinji or herself.
Will someone really die today?
It's hard to wrap in her head. Even though she can say the words, the idea of someone's going to die is just too surreal. It can't be reality for all of them.
"Come to me when you are ready. You can do something trivial like stop by anywhere if needed." Apparently finished, he opens the door and lets himself out. Bracing herself, this is going to be her first Elimination battle, it's time to fight Shinji on the battlefield.
Looking around their private room. This might be the last time she's going to see it. The Elimination battle has finally come. After she goes to the Coliseum, she'll face Shinji in battle. And one of them will die.
She hopes the information they collected is accurate. Using her portable terminal. Perhaps this is a great time to review all of it.
"Then let us reveal the Servant's identity." Said by Joker.
Shinji Matou. A friend of sorts from the prep period who she just can't bring herself to hate despite what he did yesterday. He does not understand what he's doing and she gets it.
"About his Servant. What is the weapon she wields?" The raven-haired man asks.
"Dual-wielding old-fashioned pistols." Hakuno answered, which earned a nod of confirmation from Joker. She remembers it precisely. When they got the first taste of Rider's power in the Arena, she was dual-wielding old-fashioned pistols. She and the socially retarded Shinji made a good pair of troublemakers. She's like his wild big sister.
Also, Shinji hid the note that she found from his Servant.
"What did the note say about her Noble Phantasm?" Joker question.
It's like they are having a game show right now. But she knows every correct answer.
"A ship." Though the paper was old and the handwriting scratchy, she could read her ship's name-the Golden Hind. From her attack, they deduced that she captained a ship, and that's when they realised her class was Rider. Although Shinji was pretty relaxed at first, he's gotten more on edge as she gained more information.
He's been downright childish at times, like when he blocked them from entering the Arena. And slowly but surely, she pieced together the true identity of Shinji's Servant.
"With everything we know so far, tell me Rider's true identity."
Her true name is probably-
"Francis Drake."
Francis Drake a renowned pirate who circumnavigated the world around the Cape of Good Hope. A man-er, woman?-who gained instant fame after destroying the Invincible Spanish Armada. At any rate, it's lucky that she figured out her true name before the Elimination Battle.
Shinji may be a fool at times, but there's no arguing that he's a hacker of incomparable talent. She hopes these tidbits of information can bridge the difference in their skill levels.
"So we finally uncover the secret." Joker smiled in satisfaction. "Our battle will be mostly physical. Considering she's a Rider type, we cannot let her fully utilise her Ship, the Golden Hind. Or else we'll get overwhelmed. Additionally, her class may have a class skill called Magic Resistance. Though my Magic is relatively low, we're just to keep that skill in mind."
"Now my worries centre around her Personal Skill and Parameters." The man commented. They may know her identity but there are still some things left unsolved. "Other than that, we have a time limit to beat, the city we're to fight will submerge in 15 minutes."
"We may not have to worry about the Cultural Sphere. But this map favours Shinji and Riders. The word Ship is written all over that place. So we must beat them fast before that happens."
"Additionally, Shinji's Code Cast. So far he showed and used two at me. One that is called Shock which causes an explosion that is enough to stun a Servant and one named Loss Luck that decreases one's luck parameter. But if I read Shinji correctly, he's overconfident and didn't prepare for more. So we can anticipate that this is his only Code Cast in disposal."
"I'll try to pull something off and end the battle as quickly as possible. But let's not put all our faith in it. In case it fails, I want you to support me, we have plenty of medical supplies to use, so be prepared at all costs."
Hakuno also has a Code Cast with her but she doesn't know how to use it. Still she's going to bring it just in case. "Then I guess we are ready." Joker said with confidence in his tone. "Let's do our best." He then extended his hand toward the young Master. She accepted it and was gently pulled on her feet.
It's time for their fight against Shinji. There is no turning back now. They are ready.
Meeting Kotomine standing before the door to the storage room. There was something different from the door's appearance. It's chained and glowing in purple-like-light. "You will now enter the Coliseum and confront the opposing Master. Are you ready? The only way to leave the Coliseum is to win. If you are ready, I will open the gate." He said.
Nodding her head. Father Kotomine smiled. "The way to the Coliseum is now open, young Master. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you will return. Remember: It's kill or be killed." The man then took the cipher keys in her hand before putting them onto the door.
The door then transformed into an elevator leading down. Taking a deep breath, Hakuno entered the transport room. Once the door shut and went down, Joker left his Spirit form. Lo and behold, Shinji and his Servant were also inside.
"Can't believe you survive." The man murmured. "Whatever."
"Look who didn't chicken out and run away. Ooh right, I forgot that following directions is all you're good at." Shinji said on the other side of the barrier that is separating both parties. "Get a clue, huh? Well, you can't say I didn't show you how awesome I was in the prep period."
"Never in a million years are you going to defeat me. Shoulda ran away when you had the chance!"
"You can do that?" Hakuno replied. Though it sounded innocent, she was pretty curious if someone could.
Shinji walks toward the barrier looking irritated. "How the hell would I know? Rules like that aren't meant for me. But worms like you need a place to crawl away too, am I right? I mean, hey. I'm a fair guy. I don't like fighting against losers any more than the next talented guy." He said.
"But, I guess I better get used to it, since nobody here could defeat me. Not Leo Harwey, not Rin Tohsaka, and especially not in hell it's going to be you. My Servant El Draque and I are completely invincible." Shinji then chuckled with a mocking gaze on his face. "Man, you have some seriously shitty luck to have gotten paired with ME in the first round."
"Don't worry. Since we're such good friends, I'll make sure you go out with a big bang-" Suddenly his eyes light up from an idea pop up on his head. "Oh, hey! Check out my great idea! You've gotta hear this. Ready?"
"Sure…?" Hakuno answered. He really likes hearing himself.
"Always a goody-two shoes, gotta love it. Well, I hope you'll take one more direction." He smiled before revealing the bomb shell of his idea. "Why don't you lose on purpose? Anything else is a waste of time! Obviously, even a landslide victory against you will cost me energy."
"Even decided battles like this one still are unfair because the victor has to waste their strength! That sounds lame, so do me a favour and just throw this match. Then I win, and you don't get hurt, see? Whatcha think? Makes total sense, huh? And you can even feel all warm and fuzzy for helping me out!"
"And there's something in it for you, right? Cuz if we fought for real, no way my Servant could hold back. Hell, I'll even throw in some of the prize money I'll win. All I want is the title, anyway. C'mon, is this a great idea or a great idea? Friends helping each other out and all that jazz."
"I refuse." Hakuno answered defiantly.
"You really want to fight me, huh?" Shinji let out a sigh. "You're a freaking idiot…" He let out. "I feel sorry for you. All this new power at your disposal is giving you an inflated ego. Hey, Servant. Why don't you try talking some sense into the head of your stupid Master?" With a smirk on his face, he called Joker out.
Joker matches Shinji's smirk with his own. "Must be suffocating over that side from how dense you're. It's like space actually wraps around you. The first round will be a piece of cake." The raven-haired Servant let out a chuckle.
"Whaaa…!? How dare you speak about me like that! You're just a Servant!" Shinji cried back. Behind him, Francis Drake laughs from watching him.
"They are right, Master." said by her.
"H-hey! Whose side are you on?!"
Rider approached her Master and tapped his shoulder. "Your side, of course. You paid me, so I'll fight ably by your side. Letting them throw the match would not satisfy either of us. I dislike giving less than my full effort. Let your winning instincts take over. Everything's better if you fight for it-food, women, victory."
"Besides, we're villains. That means if nothing else we're allowed to be splashy. If you're going to be a villain, you might as well be as flamboyant as you please. Don't hold back."
"I'm not a villain! Don't call me that you…evil woman!" Shinji countered back.
Francis Drake then placed her hand on top of his head. "Temper, temper, little one! You've got big balls for being such a tiny man. I admire that." She said and started patting his head.
"Hey, stop! I said stop! Don't pat my head, you baboon! And you reek of alcohol!"
They are perfect for each other. Hakuno knows that Master and Servant are paired by compatibility. However, will their chemistry be constructive in battle? She asks herself.
The elevator rumbles to a halt. This must be where they're going.
"Hmph…I was going to spare your life if you surrendered. But since EVERYBODY insists, I'll show you the vast difference in our abilities until you cry for mercy. Once El Draque's culverin makes swiss cheese out of you, it'll be too late for you."
Hakuno didn't bother talking to him. Right now, her mind is too focused on the coming battle.
Kill or be killed. Now she's going to see that rule firsthand.
The two adversaries meet at the open ground in the middle of the ruined city sunk in body. The water level is still just within the heels. But soon the entire city will be underwater. Luckily, no one else here but them, that would be horrifying if that was the case.
"So this is what we've been seeing underneath that floor. Jeez, the choice of decoration is quite a trainwreck." Joker murmured while getting himself ready from his last duel against Francis Drake. "Let's focus, Hakuno. I'd do anything to avoid seeing that guy gloat over his victory."
"All bark and no bite. Right? That's what they say, isn't it? Well that's you!" Shinji shouted across them. "I'm gonna humiliate you so badly that after this game you'll never crawl out of your mom's basement!"
Francis Drake glanced behind to look at her Master. "Oh, so your goal isn't just victory, but humiliation?" She asks. "What a greedy little boy you are, Shinji. Very well, I'll bring the rope for you to truss them up. Tie them to the mast or whatever your little heart desires."
Shinji gave her an amused smile. "Don't ever think going easy on them, El Draque. They should have backed down when they could." He replied before putting his hand to his pocket.
"Hmph, mercy isn't in my vocabulary. I have a thirst for the finer things in life, and that is all I care for. I may not always have good fortunes, but with humans and bombs, there's a certain fatal inevitability to life. Now, are you ready to go for broke? It's time to splurge!" WIth that said, both Rider and Joker approach the middle and face each other.
Live or die by the sword
What power do you hold in your hands?
Dancing flames, decaying Earth, withered ocean
With the announcement from the system. Two Servants standing back to back. Weapons ready to use. And the anticipation lingering in the air. When a debris of rock splash the water to the ground. Joker and Rider turned around and embarked on a life and death duel.
He has 15 minutes to end this fight. If they pass over that then the odds are stacked against them. There is no reason to hold back anymore. For the sake of his Master, then they must win.
But there was something that's been in Joker's mind since the beginning of the Holy Grail War. It became a great concern after what happened the other day when they almost got killed by attack programs. Breaking free from their clash, the young man created distance between him and the enemy Servant.
Placing his hand over the mask he's wearing. Joker controlled his breathing and focused. "I am thou…Thou art I." He whispered underneath his breath. Feeling the sensation of the mask on his grip. "From the sea of soul I summon thee." To vanquish his worries, it's time to see it before himself.
"Give me you power and unleash the chains of rebellion that ravage the land and my enemies." Tightening his hold onto the mask. He braced himself from ripping it off on his face. "Come forth! Persona…!" He shouted before pulling the mask on his face.
But
There was no blood.
No blazing flame orbiting around his body.
His call was answered with utter silence.
What is happening? Did he do something wrong? His Personas, why aren't they coming? He has them. He can feel them. But why?
He has them…But is that the truth? Or did he just think he had them…
In the moment of his shock. He heard Hakuno's voice shouting his name is distress. He then felt numbness over his body. Then followed by a wet feeling rolling on his skin. He then notices a red droplet falling on the paddle of water on the ground. 'Is that blood?' Joker thought. 'But to who?'
He then heard a click. Following the sound. Francis Drake reloaded her flintlock and pointed at his chest.
'Did I get shot?' He questioned himself. 'I need to..Hakuno…'
The loud sound of a gun fired travelled throughout the ruined city. Followed by a cry of a girl screaming in distress. The first Elimination Round begins.
A/N : Next chapter will be a fight scene…O' boy, hope you guys are ready to digest it. Regardless, happy holidays!
