Pulling through the Starbucks drive-thru after ordering a coffee for his companion, Mark turned to Aria. "So…do you want to tell me what that was all about back there?"
Aria huffed out a breath and shook her head. "Honestly? I don't."
"Okay by me. But there was a lot of other drama going on that I have questions about."
"Shoot."
Mark accepted the drink from the barista, handed it to Aria, and started driving following the GPS that she had programmed her address into. "Torres and Hunt are…?"
"Divorcing. But playing the married couple for my mom because…well, you saw what she's like."
"Okay, so then your sister and Robbins are totally banging, right?"
Aria laughed, "Ah, no. But I definitely think they're going to. Eventually."
"Hot."
"Ew." Taking a sip of her coffee, Aria dropped her head back onto the headrest.
"What I can't figure out is what the deal was with the chick who showed up late. Is she banging Robbins?"
"Oh…uh, I hope not. I don't think so."
"Then why was she so shocked by you and Robbins declaring your love?"
Aria smacked his arm. "There was no love declaring. I was just saving my sister."
"But now you're so mad at Torres that you had to storm out?"
"I did not storm out! I walked out. Very calmly."
"So? The chick who was late?"
"I don't know, Mark. I thought we had a…thing, you know, a vibe. There was some flirting. But now I wonder why."
"Because of the reasons you don't want to talk about?"
"Because of the reasons I don't want to talk about."
"Well," Mark pointed out, "she was really not happy with you and Robbins holding hands. If she's not in love with Robbins, she's definitely into you."
"We'll see."
"I don't know what's going on or why you're so mad about people knowing whatever it is they know about you, but maybe there's another side to the story." Mark shrugged. "Maybe you should hear them out before shutting things down that don't need to be shut down."
"Maybe you should just keep driving." Aria pointed to the GPS and settled back into her seat.
"Yes, ma'am."
Mark stopped the car in the parking garage and looked around. "Isn't this like two blocks from the hospital?"
"Yep. It's just around that corner."
He unbuckled his seatbelt and started to open his car door.
"You don't have to walk me in."
"What kind of chauffer would I be if I don't make sure you get inside safely?"
"Are you worried Addison will be mad if you leave me here?"
"No." Mark shook his head. "I'm worried your sister will kick my ass!"
Aria thought about it a moment. "Okay, yeah, she probably would. Let's go."
The pair walked into the apartment building and Mark looked around the hallways. "This place is nice."
"Yeah, it is. I'm going to have to start doing creative accounting to keep affording it but I'm tough; I'll manage."
"Why can't you afford it anymore?"
"Because of the reasons I don't want to talk about."
"Okay. Any open apartments in the building?"
"You want to be my neighbor?"
"I need a place to live that isn't a hotel and I don't think my baby momma's husband wants me in his guest room."
Aria squinted at him and stopped at her apartment door. "I'll talk to the super and see."
A slow smile spread across Mark's face. "How many bedrooms you got behind this door, Little Torres?"
"Stop thinking about my bedrooms."
"You need a roommate?"
Callie finished cleaning the kitchen just as she heard her mother and Owen coming back down the stairs.
"The children are asleep, mija. They are so beautiful."
"Thanks, mama. You should go."
"Mija, please. I've done a lot of things wrong. I'm sorry."
"I'm not the one you need to apologize to, Mom."
"Ariadne has always been so hard to talk to. You were always an open book, chatting away about every and any thought that popped into your head. But Ariadne…she is stoic. She is hard, like your father."
"That doesn't mean you get to ignore her when it's too hard for you. God, mom, you're supposed to be the parent here! She is your child. No matter what we found out about Dad or her dad or whatever…she is your daughter. You pick up the phone and you call her. And you love her no matter what. You love her even if your husband throws a temper tantrum because some truth came to light. You love her even if she's dating someone you didn't expect!"
"Mija—"
"Aria is my sister, Mom. My family. I've got her back always and no matter what. You should too. I'm disappointed in you." Callie took a deep breath. "You should go."
Nodding, Lucia stepped forward for a hug, which Callie granted briefly. "Goodnight, mija. Goodnight, Owen."
"'Night, Lucia."
Callie and Owen stood in the kitchen in silence for moments after they heard the front door close and Lucia's car drive away.
"I'm going to head to my mom's house for the night. Dinner was delicious, Cal."
Letting out a small laugh, Callie nodded. "Thanks. Thank you for putting up with my family and going through with this stupid charade tonight. It was a disaster, but at least our divorce never came up, right?"
Owen smiled slowly and tilted his head towards his wife. "You and Arizona Robbins?"
Callie let out a shocked laugh. "You and Christina Yang?"
"Touché." Owen shook his head. "For the record, I have your back too. You will always be my family. Goodnight, Callie."
"Thanks, Owen. Same." The former couple hugged each other tightly before Owen also departed, leaving Callie in the quiet kitchen.
She pulled out her cell phone and went to her newest contact. Arizona Robbins with a little heart emoji. She touched the button to open a text message and smiled, working out exactly what to say.
Hey there. Thank you again for everything tonight, including the compliments. I'm sorry for every ridiculous thing that happened, but I'm glad we had a moment alone at the end of the night. Signed, Calliope Torres 3
Arizona walked into her apartment and quickly dialed her best friend's phone number.
"Hey, Zona! It sounds like I missed a very eventful evening." Cynthia's voice came through the phone.
"You could definitely say that. Addison caught you up?"
"Yeah. She lived up to her promise and gave a very entertaining reenactment. So, just to be sure, you are not dating the object of my affections, correct?"
Arizona laughed. "That's correct. I said something stupid and put my foot squarely in my mouth. Aria jumped in to keep the focus off of Calliope."
"Good to hear. But now Aria is pissed at me, yeah? At all of us?"
"She didn't want anyone knowing about the DNA test, I guess. Calliope has mentioned that she's a pretty private person."
"Arizona, I didn't know any of it until way after we ran into her mom in the cafeteria. I don't want her thinking that I was being kind or…or flirting with her out of pity or just to make her feel better."
"I know that; I was the one who told you about it after you left her in your office. You had no idea."
"Could you tell her that?"
"Cynth, I don't know. She's mad at me too, remember?"
"I really need her to know."
"You're actually into her, aren't you?"
Cynthia paused. "Why do you sound surprised?"
"I don't know. I thought she was just one of the many pretty doctors you were obsessing over."
Letting out a small laugh, Cynthia thought about it. "I guess I thought that too. But I don't know what it is, Zone. When she was so upset tonight and directing her anger at me? I was just so heartbroken and panicked. And the more I get to spend time with her and talk to her, I think I really like her. It's not just making jokes or me being, you know, in love with everyone who looks my way. I really like her."
"Wow, Cynthia. I've never heard you talk like this about anyone before."
"Jealous?"
"You wish."
"Zone, if she's mad at me because of a misunderstanding and I can fix it by just telling her the timeline of this information getting around, I have to try."
Arizona heard her phone let out a little chime as a text message came in. She turned it and opened the message from an unsaved number. Reading Callie's text, Arizona couldn't help but smile. "Okay, Cynthia. We'll make a plan and get you your girl."
"Thank you, Z. And then we'll focus on your girl. If I'm not too busy having lots of sex."
"So it's still a little bit of making jokes?"
"It'll never be no jokes. Let's be honest."
"You're ridiculous. Goodnight, Cynthia."
"Night, Zone."
Arizona hung up the call and opened the text from Callie again, saving her contact information and typing her reply.
You put a little heart after your name. :-)
