Aria Torres walked towards the hospital with an extra bounce in her step, determined to find her sister as soon as possible to ask for an update. Walking up to the main entrance, she ran into Shelly who was smiling from ear to ear.
"Drew is getting a surgery with Dr. Rogers today. Did you have anything to do with that?" Shelly wiggled her eyebrows and nudged Aria in the side.
"I didn't, but she mentioned she'd be supervising him today. He must be ecstatic."
"So you were with her last night then?"
Aria laughed and put her arm around the other woman's shoulders as they continued to the locker room. "Yeah, I was."
"You seem happy." Shelly stopped at the locker room door and turned to look at her friend, her face turning serious. "If she hurts you, I'm gonna kick her really hard in the kneecap."
"Shelly."
"And none of us will fix it for her, either. She'll have to do it herself."
Smiling at her friend, Aria shook her head in amusement. "Thanks, Shel."
Aria pushed open the locker room door to find Drew standing on a bench, waving his scrub shirt around his head. "Torres! I've got a surgery today!"
She laughed and pretended to push him off the bench as he hopped down. "Rock it, Mitchell. Let's show these Seattle Grace doctors what we're made of."
Shelly leaned into Drew and kissed him. "Hey."
"Hey, pumpkin."
"Aria was out with Dr. Rogers again last night."
Aria rolled her eyes. "Is this all we're going to be talking about from now on?"
"We're just excited for you, Torres," Drew said. He rubbed his hand on her head and pinched her cheek.
"Well, most of us are," Shelly interjected.
Aria sighed. "She's still being a beast?"
"She'll get over it. She has a new girlfriend anyway." Drew put on his scrub shirt and ran out of the locker room with a loud whoop.
"He's ridiculous," Aria said before opening her locker to get ready for the day.
"And he's all mine," Shelly answered with a big smile.
Callie was having a rough morning. She had picked up Allegra from her sleepover and picked the boys up from Owen's mom's house. Everyone was being cranky and fussy and Allegra threw a bit of a tantrum about having to go to daycare. She finally got everyone handed over and all tears were dried (including some strays of her own) and she was standing by the good coffee cart when her sister walked up to her.
"Hey, Cal. How did everything go last night? Did you talk?"
"I can't believe you set us up."
"You guys never would have gotten over yourselves if we hadn't forced it. Did you talk?"
"Two black coffees, please," Callie ordered.
"Make that three!"
At Cynthia's voice, Aria turned around and smiled warmly at the other woman. "Hey."
"Hey." Cynthia looked nervous and avoided eye contact. "Aria, how are you?"
"Um—oh…kay."
Cynthia forced a smile and turned to Callie. "So…did you guys talk?"
"Shouldn't you be pestering Arizona?" Callie asked.
"She's off today, so I'm pestering you." The three women picked up their coffees as Callie handed money over to the barista.
Callie turned and started walking to the Cardio wing with the two other women trailing her. "We talked."
Cynthia smiled and pumped her fist. "I knew it! I knew it would work!"
Aria hurried to fall into step next to her sister. "Did you guys do anything other than talk?"
Stopping at the doors of the cardio wing, Callie rolled her eyes. "You two are worse than teenagers."
Aria smirked and looked over at Cynthia who was studiously avoiding her gaze.
"Yeah, okay, but did you?" Cynthia asked Callie.
"Maybe. That's all you're getting out of me right now. Go pester Arizona."
Just then, Cynthia's pager went off. "Shoot, I gotta go. Later, California. Aria…it was good to see you." She turned towards the ortho wing and walked away, leaving the Torres sisters staring after her.
"Did you guys go out last night?"
"We did."
"Did you have a fight?"
"We most certainly did not."
"So why is she acting like…that?"
"I have no idea."
"Weird. Let me know if there's anything I can do. Do you want to grab lunch today?"
"Can't, I'm scheduled for a half-day. I'll be out of here before lunch. Do you want me to take the kids when I leave?"
"I'd like to get them myself and maybe do lunch in my office. We all had a bad morning."
Aria nodded sympathetically. "Let me know if you want me to get them later then. Allegra and I have a new puzzle we want to work on. It's The Three Bears. It's a pretty big deal."
Smiling, Callie nodded. "Oh, I know. I've heard all about it. I'll text you later."
Aria finished her rounds and finished updating her patient's charts before clicking her pen closed and putting it in her pocket. She thanked the nurse for putting the chart away before she turned and surveyed the hallways. She really wanted to talk to Cynthia to see why she had been acting so weird, but she was a little nervous. What if Cynthia decided going out with a coworker was a mistake? What if, god forbid, the sex was terrible and she hated it? What if she was secretly married? What if…
Aria shook her head. She needed to talk to Cynthia. She wandered the hallways, checking in patients' rooms to no avail. Finally, she decided to look in Cynthia's office and found her sitting at her desk, staring blankly at a chart in front of her.
"Cynthia?"
Cynthia startled out of her musings and quickly closed the chart she had been staring at but not really reading for the past ten minutes. "Hey. Come in."
Aria entered the office and closed the door behind her. "Are you good?"
"Sure, of course."
Sitting down across from Cynthia, Aria looked at her quizzically. "Okay, great. Then what was that this morning?"
"What are you talking about?"
Aria's mouth opened but no sound came out. It felt like she was being pranked. "I'm talking about you acting like it was the first time we ever met instead of acting like I was literally the one naked in your bed last night. Which, as you may recall…I was."
Cynthia blew out a puff of air and leaned back in her chair. "I didn't know how you wanted to handle things."
"What?"
"You left before we got a chance to talk about what to do at work. I know you're all mysterious about stuff, so I didn't want to presume…"
"Mysterious?"
"Everyone says you're such a private person! Your whole thing is that no one knows who you're dating. I figured you wouldn't want…I don't know, I just didn't want to upset you by being too much too fast."
Aria closed her eyes and shook her head.
"I like you a lot, Aria. The last thing I wanted was to reach out to touch you and have you pull away from me."
Opening her eyes, Aria exhaled. "Cynthia, I know we haven't known each other for a long time, but has there been anything you've asked that I've refused to tell you because it's private?"
Cynthia thought it over. "…I guess not, no. Nothing that I've asked about."
"I'm not a private person. I'm…I don't know, a little reserved maybe, but not private. Anything you want to know, you can just ask."
"Then why do all of your friends say they never know who you're dating?"
Aria shrugged. "They never asked at the right time."
"Come on, you dated Dr. Mitchell for months."
"Okay, in that particular case, I asked Drew if we could keep it quiet because I was brand new to the hospital and didn't want my skills to be overshadowed by gossip while I made a name for myself." She stood up and walked around the desk, sitting on the edge in front of Cynthia. "My friends know about us dating. Callie knows about us dating. I assume Arizona knows. Mark knows. If I'm such a private person, I must be pretty bad at keeping secrets, huh?"
Cynthia smiled ruefully. "So I was overthinking?"
Reaching out, Aria rand her hand down Cynthia's arm and held her hand. "I'm afraid so."
"Can we try again?"
"Of course. Hey, Cynthia. Good morning."
"Morning." A smile broke out on Cynthia's face as she stood, pressing her lips against Aria's. She laughed as she felt the other woman's arms wrap around her and nuzzled into Aria's neck, feeling a shiver run through her body. "I still think you should have stayed over last night. I would have driven you to work this morning."
Aria ran her hands over Cynthia's back. "I had to shower and take my contacts out. It was easier to be home."
Cynthia pulled back to look into Aria's eyes. "Then I should have driven you home. Sorry I fell asleep on you."
"Don't be sorry." Aria kissed her quickly and nipped at her bottom lip. "I wore you out. I like that." Glancing at her watch, Aria stood, moving Cynthia back a step. "I've got a couple patients to check on before I leave." She grabbed the other woman's hand again and held it. "I just want you to do whatever feels natural at work, okay? If it's too much, I'll speak up. But I won't just pull away from you." She leaned in and kissed Cynthia's cheek, whispering in her ear, "Besides, as you probably figured out last night, I like it when you touch me."
With that, Aria left the office, leaving Cynthia to take a shaky breath and fall back into her chair.
Sitting at her laptop, Arizona waited for the call to connect to her brother. Finally, his face popped up on the screen, the woods in their parents' backyard behind him. "Tim! Hi!"
"Hey, Zona!"
"How's your week at Mom and Dad's going?"
Tim brought his phone right up to his face so that all Arizona could see was part of his nose and the top of his mouth. "You've gotta get me out of here."
Arizona laughed. "Mom being…mom?"
He moved the phone back so he could look at the screen. "I swear, she's tried to set me up with every eligible woman in town. Apparently their small town is getting more progressive…she has some ladies lined up for you too, for the next time you visit!"
"Well, I don't know about that."
"C'mon, Zone. You've gotta start getting back out there."
"I'm out there!" Arizona watched as her brother settled into one of the patio chairs on her parents' deck.
"Not just one night stands, Zone."
"No, Tim, I'm out there. There's…something happening. It's brand new and a little worrisome, but I'm trying something."
Tim smiled softly at his little sister. "Well, that sounds exciting. Tell me about her."
"She's this incredible surgeon. We worked on this case together and she fought me tooth and nail…"
"I like her already," Tim interrupted.
"She's stunning, Timmy. Like, make-people-stop-and-stare stunning. And she's funny. I can already see she has a huge heart, but there's a little bit of a badass under her cool exterior."
"Okay, so what's the worrisome part?"
Arizona shook her head and avoided her brother's gaze coming from the computer screen. "I don't want to tell you."
He sat up and put on his stern big brother face. "What's the problem, Zone?"
"It's not really a problem."
"Then you would have spit it out by now."
She sighed and blurted out, "She's straight."
"Oh, Zone. Not again." Tim rolled his eyes and fell back into his chair.
"I mean—she's definitely not straight. But this would be her first foray into…"
"Into lady waters?"
"You're disgusting."
Tim stuck his tongue out and laughed. "You're sure it's her first time?"
She thought about it. "I guess I didn't really ask. But since she's married, I just assumed—"
"Married?!"
"She's getting divorced!"
Tim's eyebrows furrowed. "She's leaving her husband for you?"
"No!" Arizona blew out a deep breath. "This is why I didn't want to tell you. You've got me all flustered."
"Okay. Take a minute and explain it to me."
Arizona sat still for a moment, breathing softly and collecting her thoughts. "She's married, currently, to another doctor at the hospital. From what I've heard, they've been struggling for a long time. He's suffering from some pretty serious PTSD."
"Ah."
"Yeah. So, I offered to be her friend and let her talk about whatever she needed to talk about, since, you know, I have some experience."
"Sure."
"And I just really like her, Tim. I can't get her out of my mind. They're getting a divorce—which has nothing to do with me, by the way—and Callie invited me over for dinner one night. She was being flirty, I wound up kissing her, and then I ran."
"Oh, Zone."
"Her sister, who also works with us, totally read me the riot act the next day and wound up tricking me and Callie into meeting for drinks and to talk things out."
"This sister sounds smart."
Arizona rolled her eyes. "Anyway, we talked, and maybe kissed a little more, and decided to see what happened next. That was just last night."
"Zone, I just don't want you to get hurt." Tim sighed. "I'm glad you're getting back out there and I love to see you this excited about someone, but married? Straight?"
"Can I make one more confession?"
"Is she an ax murderer too?"
"She has three kids."
"Kids? Like, actual human children?"
"Actual human children. They're really cute, Tim. Her daughter said I look like Cinderella."
"Well, that does sound precious."
"I know it's not my usual thing, but you're right—I am really excited about this one."
"Hmph."
"Just wait to pass judgement until you meet her, okay? You'll see for yourself."
"Do I get to meet her sister too? Is she hot? Single?"
"Actually…" Arizona trailed off.
"What?"
"Her sister just started dating Cynthia."
Tim acted like he'd just been shot in the heart. "No! Not my Cynthia! How will she and I ever run away together if she's shacking up with your girlfriend's sister?"
"She's not my girlfriend."
"Tell Cynthia I said hi anyway." Tim winked at his phone.
Arizona chuckled at Tim. He'd always had a bit of a crush on Cynthia, but Cynthia thought of him as a brother. He knew he didn't have a chance, but he was always an optimist. "You're a brat, Timmy."
She heard her mom's voice come through the phone calling Tim to dinner. "I gotta go, sis."
"Not a word about this to Mom and Dad. I don't need them in my business or getting their hopes up until there's actually something to tell, okay?"
"My lips are sealed." Tim turned his face towards the house, listening. "Oh god, I think Mom invited someone over for me to meet. Zona, you have to rescue me."
"Have fun, Timmy! See you next week!" Arizona hit the button to end the call and laughed out loud as her brother's panicked face disappeared from the screen.
I just realized I have to stand next to your ex during his surgery today and try not to hit him with a brick while I think about the fact that he's seen you naked.
Cynthia stood at the nurse's station and sent a quick text to Aria, knowing that she had already left the hospital for the day. She felt better after the other woman had tracked her down in her office. She was definitely disappointed waking up this morning to find that Aria had already left, although she had a very vague memory of her mentioning getting an Uber. In Cynthia's defense, her mind was pretty scrambled at that point and she had drifted off to sleep relatively quickly.
Yeah, but you've seen me naked more recently. And, if you play your cards right, you'll see me naked again soon. He can't say the same.
Looking at her phone, Cynthia smiled. She was honestly a bit nervous about how strong her feelings were at this point. Her phone dinged again and she looked down to see a picture come in from Aria of her tanned body wrapped in a white bedsheet.
Something to keep you happy for the rest of the day. Wish you were here.
Cynthia swallowed hard and stared at the picture. The sheet was pulled up and Aria's leg was sticking out, so Cynthia could see Aria's dark hair tumbling over her shoulders, her arms, and that uncovered leg, but everything else was out of sight. A relatively tame picture overall, but Cynthia could still feel her heart beating hard in her chest.
"Hey."
Cynthia stuffed her phone in her pocket and tried not to look too flustered as Callie walked up to her. "Hey, Callie."
"Everything okay?"
"It's fine. Your sister is going to be the death of me, that's all."
Callie laughed. "So you're done being weird around her?"
"Yeah, I'm done. Now she's just sexting me in the middle of the day and I'm supposed to go into surgery and concentrate now."
"Sexting?"
"Is that weird because it's your sister?"
"Yeah—I mean, I guess not. I don't know, you know. Since she never really told me about her dating life, it's hard for me to imagine it. To me, she's sometimes still just that little girl I used to have movie marathons on the couch with when I came home from med school."
"I hate to break it to you, California, but your sister is definitely an adult now."
"Yeah." Callie contemplated it and then shook her head, trying to get the thought out. "It's weird."
"Fair enough. How did things go for you last night? Seriously, did you and Arizona talk? Is everything okay?"
Callie couldn't help the smile that spread over her face. "We're good. We both admitted to flirting and enjoying the kissing. We even did some more of it for good measure. We left it a little open-ended. We're just going to see what happens."
"I think you're going to be really good for her, California."
"I really hope so."
