"So then we had to tell them about Dad owning The Rockford." Aria was sitting cross-legged in the chair next to Rosa's hospital bed, regaling her with the story of the gala.
"How did they react?" Rosa asked, knowing that the Torres sisters had had their share of difficulties with their family history.
"Better than most people do." Aria lifted one shoulder in a shrug. "We basically just gave the bullet points: Dad owns Torres Hotels, we were at the ribbon-cutting for The Rockford, the ballrooms are named after us so the security guard recognized us that way."
"I wish I could have seen that girl's face when he escorted her out!"
"It was pretty great, honestly." Aria smirked at the memory. "So anyway, then Drew came to get me because Chief Grey wanted to speak to me. I thought I was going to get put back on probation for causing a scene, but she said that they had already collected donations of more than two million dollars just during the dinner! One donor even pulled Grey aside and told her that he was donating a million specifically because of me. She must have hated that."
Rosa smiled and clapped her hands gleefully. "I knew you would do an amazing job, mija! Then what happened?"
"This is my favorite part-I told Grey that I wanted Kelly's name removed from all of our work and that I don't want her to be part of this project any longer."
Her face lighting up, Rosa leaned in and asked, "What did she say?"
"What could she say? I just made her a million dollars-she had to agree to anything at that point!"
Rosa snorted and shook her head. "Always a feisty one, my Ariadne."
Callie walked into the room with Rosa's chart in her hand. "That's for sure!" Aria stuck her tongue out at her big sister, who just grinned in response. "How are you feeling today, Rosa? Ready for one more surgery?"
"I feel good. I'm ready. But first, you were supposed to bring me someone to meet, Calliope. Don't think I'm so old I'd forget."
Callie tried to fight the blush that ran up her neck. "She's just outside, Rosa. I wanted to make sure you were up for it."
"I'll leave you guys to it." Aria stood and grabbed her lab coat from where it was resting on the back of the chair. "I've gotta get to rounds anyway." She leaned down and placed an affectionate kiss on the older woman's forehead. "You behave in there. I'll be waiting for you when you get out." She pointed at her sister. "You behave in there too. Do good work."
"Yes, ma'am."
Aria grinned and swept out the door, patting Arizona on the shoulder as she walked past. "She's gonna love you," she encouraged as she walked away.
Taking a deep breath and forcing a smile, Arizona walked into the room. She was more nervous than she had expected to be. Callie's own mother was quite the force to be reckoned with, and even though everyone had told her how sweet and warm Rosa is, she didn't want to mess anything up so early in whatever was happening between her and Callie. It clearly meant a lot to Callie to have the two women meet, and Arizona was ready to do just about anything that would make Callie happy.
Callie caught her eye and smiled, sending her a reassuring wink. "Nanny, this is Arizona Robbins. Arizona, this is Rosa Gutierrez."
"It's so nice to finally meet you," Arizona began, smoothing down her lab coat nervously.
Rosa's eyes lit up and she gestured to the chair next to her bed. "Come, sit. Calliope has not told me much about you I'm afraid, but I am eager to learn."
Callie rolled her eyes. "I just told you she existed yesterday, Nanny. I haven't had time to tell you anything else about her!"
Chuckling at the familiarity and camaraderie between the two women, Arizona spoke up, "What would you like to know?"
Regarding the blonde woman, Rosa squinted while looking Arizona up and down. "Now, when Mrs. Torres came home ranting about Aria dating a woman, someone like you is who I expected to meet. Not the dark-haired one that is chasing after Ariadne."
Callie grimaced. "Mama was ranting?"
Rose glanced at Arizona for a moment before addressing Callie. "I won't repeat the words she said, but I definitely heard the words 'blonde' and 'Phoenix' in the mix."
"Yikes," Arizona said. "I think I can explain that one. I had put my foot in my mouth trying to pay Calliope a compliment when I shouldn't have. Aria jumped in and saved me and Callie from the wrath of Mrs. Torres."
"My Aria makes a good friend."
"Yes, she does. But that's all we are."
Rosa grinned, glancing between the two women. "How are you going to explain this to your mama, Calliope?"
Callie paled as the smile dropped from her face. "I hadn't even thought that far ahead."
Chuckling, Rosa waved a dismissive hand in the air. "Your mother doesn't need to know everything. She's too much of a busy body as it is. Now," she turned back to Arizona. "Tell me what it is you do."
"I'm the head of the Pediatrics department here at Seattle Grace."
"She saves babies," Callie interjected.
Rosa sent a pointed glare towards Callie. "She can tell me that herself. Calm down, mija."
Chagrined, Callie rolled her eyes and mouthed "Sorry" to Arizona before busying herself in Rosa's chart.
"I do save babies. I do surgeries on babies, children, and teenagers."
"Big surgeries on little people. Impressive, Ms. Robbins."
Arizona grinned, pleased that Rosa saw her job the same way she did. "Please, call me Arizona."
"Have you worked with my Calliope long?"
"We've both been at the hospital for a long time, but we really only bonded recently over a patient we worked on together."
Rosa turned serious. "Was it successful? Did the child live?"
"He did. Calliope came up with a very impressive course of treatment that I never would have considered without her advocating it. It was an incredible case. One I'll never forget."
Rosa didn't miss the look that passed between the two women or the warm smiles on both of their faces. "It is nice not hearing you bristle when someone calls you by your full name, Calliope."
Callie rolled her eyes. "She says it because I haven't asked her not to. You do it just because you're stubborn."
"Ach. It is a beautiful name," Rosa said.
"That's what I told her too," Arizona agreed.
Groaning in mock annoyance, Callie closed Rosa's chart. "Now that you two have successfully ganged up on me, I'm going to need Rosa to rest up before her surgery. We should go."
Arizona glanced at her watch. "I do have a patient I need to check on. Rosa, it was an absolute pleasure to meet you."
Rosa held out her hand and waited for Arizona to take it. "You too, Arizona. I'm looking forward to getting to know you better. Calliope, we should all have dinner before I leave Seattle. You, me, the delightful Arizona, Aria, and her friend Cynthia."
"I don't know if they've fully made up yet, Nanny."
Rosa rolled her eyes. "Then we must work on that next, yes?" She tugged on Arizona's hand. "Do you know this Cynthia?"
"She's one of my closest friends."
"Will she be good to my Aria if we can get her head out of her hindquarters?"
Laughing, Arizona nodded. "Absolutely."
"Then this is our next project. Today, we fix my heart, then we open Aria's. Agreed?"
Callie shook her head in mock reproach. "You know Aria doesn't like anyone meddling in her life."
"She's too stubborn. Now go, save lives."
Callie squeezed Rosa's arm affectionately. "I'll be back in a few hours to help prep you before surgery. Be good."
"It was so nice meeting you, Rosa. I'm looking forward to talking more."
"Me too, child."
Arizona followed Callie out of the room and to the nurse's station where Callie dropped off Rosa's chart. "She's delightful."
"She's a nosy old gossip." Callie smiled affectionately. "But she's family. Thanks for stopping by this morning. It really does mean a lot."
"Of course, Calliope. I have to go check on some patients. Maybe we can do lunch before Rosa's surgery this afternoon?"
Callie smiled. "Yes, please."
Aria stalked into the ER and saw Owen standing outside waiting for an ambulance. She grabbed a trauma gown and stepped out of the doors and up next to him. "Hey, Owen. Can you put me to work?"
He glanced over at his sister-in-law's face and noticed her scowl. "Are you okay? Did something happen with Rosa's surgery?"
Aria shook her head and waved a dismissive hand in the air. "Rosa's fine. Her surgery isn't for another hour. It's just been a rough morning."
"Um...what's going on? Why is it a rough morning?"
Glancing over at him, Aria said, "You've never taken an interest in my life before."
Owen shrugged. "But I should have. Do you want to tell me what's wrong? The Chief told me how much money you raised last night, practically on your own. Nicely done."
Aria lifted one shoulder in a half-hearted shrug. Never having seen Aria pass up a chance to toot her own horn, Owen's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
Aria sighed. "I lost a long-time patient this morning. She was an amazing woman...a mom, a grandma, a wife. She loved life. She was nervous about coming to Seattle Grace, but she came because she wanted me to do her surgery."
Owen nodded in understanding. "What happened?"
"A reaction to the anesthesia. It was a freak thing that was out of my control, but I still had to be the one to tell her husband that she wasn't going to…" Aria trailed off as her throat started to tighten.
"What was her name?"
"Shirley. Shirley Fernandez."
"I'll say a prayer for her and her family."
Aria looked over at Owen in surprise. "You've never struck me as the religious type."
"Your sister rubbed off on me." He chuckled. "I'm not devout like she is, but I do know that prayer can help."
"It's a kind thought. Thank you, Owen."
The two stood in the ambulance bay in comfortable silence for a moment before Owen took a deep breath. "Look, Aria...I wanted to take a minute to apologize to you for what happened at the beginning of the month."
Aria shook her head. "Water under the bridge."
"No, it...I didn't mean to…"
"Hey, it was an accident." Aria shrugged. "I have no idea what you're going through, but I know it can't be easy." She offered him a small smile. "No matter what happens, you're always going to be my family."
"I want you to know that I'm working hard on myself right now. The kids...they're my first priority. And I know your sister and I...I know that's over, but I still want what's best for her."
Aria regarded the man standing next to her. "Me too."
"I want her to be happy."
She couldn't tell what he was getting at. "Mmhmm."
"I saw her dancing with Robbins at the dinner last night and she looked happier than I've seen her in a long time. I know I reacted badly at first, but I just want her to be happy."
"You should tell her that."
"She doesn't want to hear that from me."
"I think it could go a long way." Aria shrugged. "Life is short, Owen. Too short to not tell people the truth."
One side of Owen's mouth lifted in a smile. "I've heard that you need some work on that too."
Huffing and turning to face him, Aria rolled her eyes. "This goddamn rumor mill."
Owen laughed and clapped a heavy hand on Aria's shoulder. "Rogers is a good person. I've worked with her a lot. I know my opinion doesn't necessarily mean much to you considering our history, but I think you should give her one more chance."
Aria scowled at him as the ambulance finally pulled into the bay, spurring them into action.
Cynthia was walking down the hallway and spotted Aria sitting in the gallery, intently watching the surgery below her. Stepping into the room, Cynthia took a seat a couple of chairs away from the younger surgeon. She could see that Aria was fidgeting with her hands and her leg was bouncing with nerves. "Is everything okay?"
Aria jumped, not having realized that anyone had entered the room. "Oh! Oh, hey."
"Hey. Are you alright?"
Aria shook her head. "I lost three patients already today. Right in a row and it's not even noon. Now Rosa is on that operating table with her heart exposed." She took a deep breath. "I'm just sitting here willing her to survive."
Sliding into the chair next to the nervous doctor, Cynthia put a comforting hand on her back. "How's the surgery going?"
"It's fine so far. I think it's almost over."
"And she's been recovering well, right?"
Aria nodded but didn't stop fidgeting.
"She's going to be okay, Aria. Callie's taking care of her."
Letting out a deep sigh, Aria sat back in her chair. "I know you're right. There's just been a lot of death today."
"You're scared."
"She's my Nanny." Aria glanced sideways at the other woman and shrugged. "I'm nervous."
"It's okay to be scared, you know."
Aria didn't answer, but her face screwed up in distaste.
"Do you mind if I stay and watch with you?"
Aria shook her head, so Cynthia sat back and let her arm fall over the back of Aria's chair. She noticed that the other woman had finally started to calm down and was sitting more still than she had been. After a few minutes, Aria spoke up. "Are you friends with Owen?"
"He and I work together a lot. I work on some of the programs for veterans that he leads. Why?"
"He told me you're a good person and I should give you another chance."
"Well...my lapse in judgement and overreaction with you the other day notwithstanding, I do like to think I'm a pretty good person."
Aria hung her head before turning to look at the other doctor. "I wasn't trying to imply that I think you're not a good person. You are. I know that." She shrugged and turned back to watch the surgery. "I just didn't realize you two were friends."
"Work friends, mostly."
Aria nodded and stood up as she saw Callie in the OR below begin to close. She stepped up to the intercom. "How'd it go?"
Callie glanced up and sent a quick smile from behind her mask. "Really well. We're just closing up and she'll be back in her room soon. You can start breathing again."
Shooting a rueful smile down at her sister, Aria sank back against the wall and closed her eyes. "This day has been a lot." She opened her eyes and regarded Cynthia who was sitting and watching her. "I'm going to need a drink after work tonight." She paused. "Want to join me?"
Cynthia hesitated, not wanting to pass up a chance to spend time with Aria and also disappointed to have to say no when Aria clearly needed a friend. "I...actually have plans tonight."
"Oh. Oh! Of course you do. Sorry, I didn't mean to…"
"Hey." Cynthia stood up and walked over to Aria, placing a hand on her arm. "It's not a date. It's just something I have planned." She thought for a moment. "Why don't you come with me?"
"Where are you going?"
"Well...it's a little unconventional and I don't really know you well enough to know if you'll enjoy it or hate every second so I don't want to tell you. But if it's horrible, I'll take you out for that drink afterwards, okay?"
Confused, but mostly intrigued, Aria nodded slowly. "Okay."
"Seriously?"
"I kind of want to see what Cynthia Rogers gets up to in her spare time. And I definitely need a distraction from this hospital."
"I'll pick you up at 6:30?"
"I'll be ready." Aria's pager sounded, causing her to sigh and look down at her hip. She sent a quick smile to Cynthia before walking towards the door. At the last minute, she turned back around. "This thing tonight...we're going as friends, right? I don't want to…"
Cynthia held up her hands. "Friends. The ball is in your court, Torres. If you decide you want more, you're going to need to make the first move."
Letting her eyes wander over Cynthia's body, Aria shot her a quick wink before disappearing out the door to tend her to patient.
"I know when someone is flirting with me, Arizona. And she was totally flirting with me." Cynthia was sitting in Arizona's office and chatting after going over a surgery plan for the following day.
"You have absolutely no idea when someone is flirting with you."
Cynthia paused. "That may be true. But I can tell when someone is picturing me naked, and Little Torres was most definitely doing that."
"So in response, you're taking her to meet Jerome?"
"She had a bad day and needed a friend."
Grinning, Arizona teased, "She has other friends, you know. Plus her sister. And her niece and nephews. She could have found someone to hang out with tonight."
"But she asked me. If I wasn't such a jerk at that moment, I'm pretty sure we'd be dating by now. I'm doing my best to prove to her that I'm not a crazy psycho person and that she can count on me to be there for her. Spending time with her after a bad day is the least I can do."
"You guys are cute."
"Speaking of cute...you and Callie looked really good dancing together last night."
Arizona's eyes sparkled as she smiled. "That actually really surprised me. I didn't think she'd be ready to do something like that."
"You think she's getting more comfortable with the idea of being with you?"
"I do. She introduced me to Rosa this morning. Apparently Callie had a heart-to-heart with her yesterday and came out."
"Came out as what, exactly? Do we know how she identifies?"
Arizona frowned briefly and shook her head. "I'm choosing to just focus on the fact that I know she likes me."
Smiling, Cynthia stood up. "That's fair." She grabbed the chart that they had been working on. "I think we have a good plan for tomorrow. Thanks for working on this case with me."
"Anytime, Cyn. Have fun on your friend-date tonight."
Rolling her eyes, Cynthia walked to the door. "Hush, Robbins."
Rosa had been awake for almost an hour. Both Callie and Yang had been into her room to declare that the surgery was a success and that she looked good. Aria was sitting by her bedside and holding her hand the whole time. She smiled fondly at Aria and gave her hand a squeeze. "You don't have to watch over me, mija. You're a hotshot doctor, I'm sure you have your own patients to see."
"None as important as you are," Aria declared.
Watching the young woman, Rosa could tell that there was something on her mind. "Penny for your thoughts?"
Aria's face turned serious and she blinked slowly. Trying to steel her resolve, she took a deep breath in before asking quickly, "Did you know the man my mother slept with when she got pregnant with me? My...dad?"
Rosa clicked her tongue in sympathy and sighed. She was surprised that it had taken this long for the topic to come up if she were being honest. She nodded. "Marco was a friend. He was a good, kind, funny man. He knew that I didn't approve of what he was doing with Mrs. Torres…"
"You knew it was happening?" Aria interrupted.
"Not at first," Rosa said softly. "I found out. You know nothing happens in that house without me finding out about it, mija."
One side of Aria's mouth lifted in a smile. "That's true. So they were like, together together? It wasn't just a one-time thing?"
Rosa sighed. "It's my understanding that it was a few months. Mrs. Torres found out she was pregnant and then...I don't know for sure. There was a fight between Mrs. Torres and Marco and he left."
"Do you know anything else about him? His life?"
"I'm sorry, child. I don't know much."
"But it sounds like he knew about me. Didn't he try to keep in touch?"
Rosa shook her head sadly. "Your mama was adamant that you weren't his before he left."
Taking a shaky breath, Aria closed her eyes tightly.
"I might have a picture at home. I'll need to look once I get back to Miami."
Aria opened her eyes and Rosa's heart broke at how watery they were. "That would be nice."
A knock sounded on the door and Cynthia peeked her head into the room. "Hey, Rosa. Are you ready for…" She spotted Aria who was wiping tears away and taking deep breaths. "Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt."
Aria forced a smile and turned towards the visitor. "That's okay. What are you doing here?"
"Just checking up on Rosa. And I'm here for our nightly crossword."
Looking between the two women, Aria asked, "Nightly crossword?"
"Cynthia has been spending time with me each night and we do a crossword puzzle together. It's been very nice, mija."
Aria gaped at Cynthia. "Are you just friends with all of my family members now?"
Shrugging sheepishly, Cynthia turned to Rosa. "I have something to do tonight, so I was hoping we could work on our crossword a little early today."
"Of course, child. Come in!" Rosa ushered Cynthia in with a smile.
Aria stood. "I'll let you two get to it."
"You can stay."
"Mija, you don't need to go. Do you want to finish talking about…"
"No," Aria interrupted. "No, I don't. I'm okay, Nanny." She stepped up next to the bed and leaned down to kiss Rosa on the forehead. "I'll see you tomorrow. Your sister is coming in later." Aria sent a small smile to Cynthia and turned to leave.
"Aria?"
Stopping at the door, Aria turned back to Cynthia.
"Are you good?"
Aria forced a shaky smile. "No other option. Are we still good for tonight?"
"Absolutely."
Cynthia nodded and Aria turned to leave the room. As she stepped through the door, she heard Rosa ask, "What's happening tonight?"
