Fear, that was what he was feeling right now. First thing he could remember, fear. He curled up around himself, surrounded by the unknown darkness.
Not able to remember anything except his name, he hoped someone was here with him to help him. After a long time, the room he was in finally stopped moving. Suddenly, someone slid open the door above him, letting the bright sunlight reach his eyes. He covered his face with his hands, trying to adjust his eyes to the new brightness they found. A wave of confusion hit him when he heard noises above him. Removing his hand from his face, he saw some boys, who were bending over the ceiling of the room, looking at him.
All of them seemed like teenagers. They pulled him out and stared at him while he was taking in the place he was just brought to.
"Day one, Greenie. Welcome to the Glade." one boy said.
Panic started surging through his body. "What is this place? Where am I? Wha... What…?"
"Whoa, Whoa, take it easy, man." A dark-skinned boy said. "Just calm down."
He didn't calm down at all, instead he started running away from those boys, but soon found out that four enormous walls surrounded the whole place and there was no place to run. Giving up, he went up to the nearest tree and sat down, placing his back to the trunk, bringing his knees closer to his chest and dropping his head in his hands.
"Whoa, man! You run fast." The dark-skinned boy returned to him, "Let's start over, name's Alby..."
Alby told him everything he knew about the place until now, which only scared him more. "... Don't worry. You take your time. Call me when you're ready to talk." He said, and started walking.
"Hey! Alby." he called to him, and Alby turned to see him. "My name is Newt."
Alby smiled, "Nice to meet you, Newt." and returned walking.
There were five boys in the Glade, including Newt. All of them were equally scared and anxious. None of them wanted to enter the only wall that was open because of the noises they heard during the night. They knew something dangerous was outside, which kept them all inside the Glade. In order to distract themselves, they started working in the field. But Newt wanted to go in there and find out what was outside. The only reason he didn't go out there was because he didn't want to cross the only people who were present there with him.
Newt was glad that at least he had people to talk to. All of them used to talk about random facts, each of them knew, which they don't remember learning how or when. Most of their conversations ended with a depressing note which made Newt not so glad now. He sometimes wished to punch someone and yell at them about how ridiculous this whole situation was and that they need to get out of here, but wasn't able to say anything when he saw their faces, the fear in their eyes.
Alby was the one he talked to the most in the Glade until Minho showed up. Minho came up the following month after Newt came and the first thing he did was breaking Alby's nose by one punch.
"Get away from me whoever you are, all of you, get back," said the Asian boy.
All the other boys got terrified looking at the scene in front of them, but somehow it made Newt laugh. He was just thinking about punching Alby while he was going on about 'how must be the life out of here' when suddenly this boy came up and did it for him. It was the first time he heard himself laugh. Everyone looked at him, Alby in disbelief, others scared as they thought he had lost it, and Minho ready to punch him as well.
Newt stopped. "Sorry... ahem.. don't know what came up to me. Hi, listen, my name's Newt, whose nose you just broke is my friend Alby and we all just like you have no memory of our life before comin' up here except our names, so it would be really nice of you to not scare anyone here more than they already are." He said in a calm voice.
Two boys took Alby away to the homestead to take care of his nose, while the other practically ran to the field in order to get away from Minho.
"Tell me everything you know." Minho asked looking at Newt, so he told him everything he heard from Alby.
Newt saw that Minho, like the rest of them, didn't look scared at all. He looked angry, like he would murder someone right now.
"Hey! Calm down!" Newt said. Minho looked around and pointed towards the only wall that was open. "Why didn't you try getting out of there."
"We-" Newt started but stopped as Minho got up and started running towards the opening of the wall. Newt got up and started running to catch up behind him. "Hey! wait!" Newt yelled as he saw him entering the wall. He caught up to him and tried to stop him. "Look, it's dangerous here we have to go back."
Minho finally stopped, but it wasn't because of what Newt said.
"It's a maze." Minho's voice didn't sound angry anymore.
Newt didn't pay attention to where they were until Minho spoke. He looked around, not sure what he was feeling right now, as he took in his surroundings.
Minho moved to sit, resting his back on the wall. Newt saw panic and fear rush into Minho's expression.
"Where... where are we? Why are we here? What did we do?" Newt went to sit next to him. "I wish I knew." Newt paused for a second. "But look, we all are in this together, we all feel just the same. We will figure out what is going on around here."
"How?"
Newt stopped to figure out what to say. "Well, because of you, actually. You did the first thing by comin' here. Others were just too scared to even think about comin' here. Don't know if you're brave or stupid-"
"If I'm stupid, then you're even more stupid to follow me." Minho quickly said. Newt rolled his eyes. "Whatever, the point is now we know it's a maze. And we can solve it. I'm pretty sure there's an exit from where we can go home."
Minho said nothing then slowly muttered, "I don't even remember home." Tears about to rush through his eyes. Newt, not wanting to be in an awkward situation, suddenly changed the topic. "Look, we need to get back. The doors are gonna close soon and there's something strollin' around here at night and I don't want to know what that is today."
"You go back, I'll return in a minute."
Newt deciding to give him some privacy, patted his shoulder and started walking back, but stopped when he remembered he doesn't know which way to go. He didn't pay attention to the directions when he was running behind Minho.
"Two lefts, a right then a left, go straight and then take two rights." Minho said from behind him as he saw him froze.
"You remembered all that."
Minho shrugged, "I guess I'm good with directions."
Newt nodded and then left.
After that day Newt and Minho started going out regularly, mapping the maze and trying to find a way out. Newt liked Minho. He didn't feel depressed around him, as he was always making dumb jokes.
Slowly, they started getting organised as the number of boys started getting bigger. Over three years passed by, in which a lot happened. Newt became a Runner, then the first Keeper of the Runners, but then became the second in command after two years because of his heavy limp he had due to...
... Let's not think about that. Minho took the responsibility of becoming the new Keeper of Runners. Minho and Alby were his only two close friends. They helped each other survive through the whole depression caused by the Glade. They lost a lot of boys, who were with them from the starting, to fear, depression, and lack of hope. That made them took on the responsibility to help other boys who came onto the Glade.
Just like every month, another boy came up through that box, eyes full of fear. To Newt's fascination, the boy went through the exact same procedure he did when he first entered the glade, running and then sitting below the exact same tree he sat, with his face hidden in his hands.
"I think I just had a déjà vu," Newt told Alby before he went up to that boy to explain the things he could right now. And he did a really terrible job at that. It wasn't his fault. He was still not over Nick's death and was not ready to give the pep talk to the new Greenie.
Seeing Alby clearly freaking him out, he stepped up to him and playfully slapped him across the head. "Wait for the bloody Tour, Alby. Kid's gonna have a buggin' heart attack, nothin' even been heard yet."
He bent down and extended his hand towards the new boy. "Name's Newt, Greenie, and we'd all be right cheery if you'd forgive our klunk-for-brains new leader, here."
The boy reached out and shook his hands, which made Newt chuckle inside, as he refused to shake Alby's hand before.
"Pipe it, shuck-face," Alby grunted, pulling Newt down to sit next to him. "At least he can understand half my words."
Newt looked at the boy, ignoring Alby. "That was some dash you made earlier. For a second, I thought you had the chops to be a runner... till you face-planted."
Alby laughed and started explaining to him about the Glade, while Newt watched the guy. His hair was sandy brown and short. He looked no less than sixteen.
He could see how much scared that boy was and how much he was controlling in his tears by looking at his eyes, and shucking Alby was only making it worse. Newt reached out and grabbed Alby by the shoulders. "Alby, lay off a bit. You're hurtin' more than helpin', ya know?"
"Ain't got time to be nice, Greenbean. Old life's over, new life's begun. Learn the rules quick, listen, don't talk. You get me?"
The guy looked at Newt with hope in his eyes, as if asking him to help him. His eyes about to tear up from the frustration of not knowing anything. Newt didn't like the look on his face. He thought to talk to him alone afterwards, and nodded. "Greenie, you get him, right?" He nodded again.
"Yeah." He drawled.
After telling him the three most important rules of the Glade, Alby said, "You came late, ain't got time for the Tour. I'll explain everything else later." He turned to Newt. "Get him a bed, get him to sleep."
"Good that," Newt said.
Alby left, and Newt looked at the boy again. He had closed his eyes and took a deep breath, as if to hold the forceful tears back. "What did I do?" he whispered. "What did I do-why'd they send me here?"
Newt clapped him on the shoulder. "Greenie, what you're feelin', we've all felt it. We've all had our First Day, come out of that dark box. Things are bad, they are, and they'll get much worse for you soon, that's the truth. But down the road a piece, you'll be fightin' true and good. I can tell you're not a bloody sissy." He tried to cheer him up.
"Is this a prison?" he asked.
"Done asked four questions, haven't you?" Newt replied. "No good answers for you, not yet, anyway. Slowly you'll know everything. Best not to hurry" Newt knew he shouldn't tell him more about anything if he didn't want to repeat the events that happened with Nick.
The boy said nothing, his head sunk, his eyes staring at the cracked, rocky ground. Newt could see the trail of moles following his jaw to the back of his neck. Something deep inside his heart didn't like the idea of seeing this guy in front of him sad. He watched him for a while before coming back to the reality.
"Chuck'll be a good fit for ya," Newt said. "Wee little fat shank, but nice sap when all's said and done. Stay here, I'll be back." he stood up and started walking towards the direction where Chuck was.
"Hey! Newt!" the boy called. "My name's Thomas."
Newt smiled at him. "Well, nice to meet you, Tommy."
