'I don't like her' Was the first thing Newt thought about her and it surprised him because he didn't even know her name yet. He just saw her talking with Thomas from a distance. They looked like they were in deep conversation, which would not end soon. So Newt stopped waiting for them to come down and made his way to Alby.
Alby looked terrible like he was on the verge of dying. The sight of his best friend made him miserable. Clint and Jeff had tied him to the bed in order to stop him from moving.
Suddenly, Thomas came in with the girl.
"You shouldn't be here." Newt said, looking at the girl.
"It's okay I told her about Alby and everything else." Thomas replied.
"Everything?" Newt was shocked to see that the girl didn't have a heart attack right now. On the contrary, she didn't seem scared at all. He had a bad feeling about her, but he chose not to show it and at least wait for her to talk first.
"Look, she had these in her pocket when she came up." Thomas handed him a vial that had a blue serum in it. The vial had the same letters on it 'WCKD'. "I think it's a cure for Alby."
"What?" Newt looked at the girl, then again at Thomas. "Why do you think it's a cure?"
"I...," he hesitated, "I'm sorry I didn't tell you before, but ever since I've been here, I had these dreams. There was this woman that kept saying 'Wicked is good' and...," He looked at the girl. "... I saw her."
"In your dream?" Newt said, making Thomas look at him again.
He looked embarrassed, "She said that things are going to change."
"Why didn't you tell me about that when I asked you before?" Newt looked sad, more than angry.
"I thought they were just dreams and I... Look, I'll tell you everything later, but I think we should use it on Alby."
"We don't even know what this stuff is. We don't know who sent it. Or why it came up here with you." Newt looked at the girl. "For all we know, this thing could kill him."
"He's already dying. Look at him. How could this possibly make it any worse? Come on, it's worth a try."
Newt looked at Alby. He didn't have any other choice. He sighed. "All right. Do it." He handed the syringe back to Thomas.
"Okay-" Thomas was about to inject him when Alby suddenly freed his hands and grabbed him by his shirt. "You shouldn't be here! You shouldn't be here! No!" He yelled.
"Watch out!" Newt came from behind him, holding Alby down.
"Get the syringe!" Thomas shouted at the girl. She instantly took the syringe and injected it into Alby's body.
Thomas could see the muscles in Newt's arms flexing, veins popping out as he pulled at Alby's hands, until finally, inch by inch, he was able to pry them away. He pushed them tightly against the struggling boy's chest. Alby's whole body jerked a couple of times, his midsection thrusting up and away from the bed. Then, slowly, he calmed, and a few seconds later he lay still, his breath evening; his eyes glazed over and his veins losing the black colour.
"Well, that worked." Jeff said.
"Okay, from now on... someone stays here and watches him around the clock." Newt ordered the med-jacks.
"Hey-" Gally entered the room. "Sundown, Greenie. Time to go."
Thomas looked at Newt. "I'll take him. You don't have to worry about it."
Gally looked like he was about to protest, but got distracted when he saw Alby's body looking better than before. He gave Thomas a stare, then nodded to Newt and made his way out.
Newt went out too and motioned Thomas and the girl to follow him. Seeing Thomas following him quietly, she followed him too, saying nothing. Newt stopped when he reached outside and called Chuck. He then looked at the girl. "Do you remember your name?"
"Yes, it's Teresa." she replied.
"Well, Teresa, we'll have to find you a place to sleep." She looked at Thomas nervously. "Don't worry, it'll be separate from others." Newt continued, and she nodded.
Chuck came up to them. "Until then- Chuck, meet Teresa. Teresa, Chuck."
"Hi." Chuck said shyly.
Teresa smiled, "Hey, Chuck."
"Why don't you take her to Frypan's." Newt told Chuck then looked at Teresa. "I'm sure you're hungry. Just try to stay away from Gally at the moment. I'll get back to you."
"Okay." she replied, and Chuck took her away.
Now Thomas and Newt were the only ones standing there. Newt said nothing and started walking towards the pit where Thomas was going to spend the night. Thomas felt Newt was angry with him for not telling him about his dreams before. He reached up behind him. "Newt?"
He didn't reply.
Thomas grabbed Newt's sleeve to stop him. "Newt, I'm sorry."
Newt turned around to look at Thomas's pleading eyes and sighed. "It's okay. I shouldn't be mad. You just saved Alby's life, again."
"Still, I'm sorry I didn't tell you about my dreams earlier. I thought you'll think I'm crazy or something." Thomas said, looking down.
"I already think you're crazy." Newt smirked. "But that's one of the reasons why I like you."
Thomas smiled, knowing that Newt liked him and hoped Newt couldn't see the red rising on his cheeks.
"So, is there anything else you didn't tell me?" Newt asked.
"No, I think I told you everything." Thomas waited for a little. "I- uh- Teresa and I think we're here for some reason."
Newt raised one eyebrow in question.
"That woman in my dreams kept saying that Wicked is good. WCKD is written on all the supplies we get. Maybe Wicked is the name of organisation that put us here." Thomas told him.
"How can keepin' a bunch of teenagers trapped inside a maze be good?"
Thomas shrugged. "I don't know. They did send us the cure for Alby."
"Then why didn't they send it when George was stung or Ben? You don't seriously believe they're pleasant people who sent us."
"No, I don't! I hate them for doing this to us." Thomas replied instantly. "I'm just telling you what I saw."
Newt nodded for him to continue.
"Teresa remembers the same thing, that woman's voice. She thinks they put here us for a reason like we have to do something."
"Like what?"
"Like getting out of the maze. I don't know." Thomas moved his hand to the left of his forehead to massage it, as it was hurting a little. Newt replaced Thomas's hand with his own unconsciously and slowly massaged circles with his thumb beside his temple. Thomas stopped breathing and looked at Newt's worried face. "Well then, you should rest up for the night and get ready to run the maze tomorrow."
Newt met Thomas's eyes and realised what he was doing. He quickly removed his hands from where they were and Thomas started breathing again.
"I forgot I was a runner." Thomas blurted, and a smile formed on his face as he realised what he just said.
Newt laughed. "Yeah, we'll figure out why they send us here once we get out. Right now focus on solvin' the maze."
He then took Thomas to the pit. He opened it up, then motioned for him to enter.
"Have fun," Newt said before closing the door. Thomas turned around to his new home and heard Newt locking the bars close above him. Newt's head appeared looking through the bars, a smirk on his face. "Nice reward for breakin' the rules. You saved some lives, Tommy, but you still need to learn—" "Yeah, I know. Order." Thomas rolled his eyes.
Newt smirked. "You're not half bad, shank. But friends or no, gotta run things properly, keep us alive."
"I understand, Newt." Thomas nodded.
Newt raised his eyebrow. "Does that mean you'll follow the rules from now on?"
Thomas didn't reply. Newt shook his head and let out a small laugh. And then he was gone.
Newt saw Minho, Frypan, Teresa, and Chuck sitting at the table outside the kitchen. She was getting along with every one of them very fine. They all were laughing at something Minho said when Newt joined them.
Seeing Minho spending time with someone other than him and Alby made him happy. This was one of the good changes that happened since Thomas came.
After a while, Newt asked Teresa about everything she remembered. She replied the same thing Thomas had told him earlier. He then explained to her all the rules and took her to the Gathering Hall where she could sleep.
"We use it for Gatherings." He told her. "No one comes here until they're called, so it would work for you."
"Yes, it's fine." She replied.
Newt nodded and started making his way out.
"Newt." Teresa called, and he turned. "Thank you."
Newt didn't know what she was talking about, so he just shrugged in reply and started walking again, but stopped when she continued. "For believing me and Thomas."
Newt turned around looked at her.
"From what I learned, we both are in the circle of suspicion here and I would've doubted myself too If I were you, but I promise I remember nothing except what I told you and Thomas. And I was so scared when I woke up and I thought-" She was panicking so Newt cut her off.
"Don't worry about it. Look, I won't lie. Everyone knows there's something different about you two, but you were put here just like everyone else. And if it wasn't for you, our leader would be dead. So, try to calm yourself. No one here will try to hurt you."
She took a deep breath. "Okay. Thanks." She smiled weakly at him.
He smiled back and came out.
She seemed fine to him, but there was still this feeling that he couldn't put his finger on, which made him not to like her. He was too tired to think about that right now. He hadn't slept last night at all. So much has happened since then that it didn't feel like 24 hours ago.
He took a quick patrol of the Glade before going to sleep. He was glad he did that because he just saw someone sneaking around in the kitchen. He couldn't see who it was because of the darkness. So, he took a lantern and went up to the kitchens and found out it was Chuck.
"Aah!" Chuck shrieked when he saw Newt. "You scared me."
"Care to tell me what's goin' on here?" Newt asked.
"I- uh-" Chuck started. Newt saw him hiding something behind his back.
"What're you hidin', Chuck?"
Chuck showed him what it was. "Nothing. It's just, sometimes I get hungry at night. So I was taking something to eat with me right now so that I won't have to come here afterwards." he laughed nervously.
Newt knew Chuck was lying. He was taking the food for Thomas.
"Okay," Newt smiled. "Take this lantern with you, it's difficult to eat in the dark." He handed him the lantern. "I'm tired. I'm gonna go to sleep now." He yawned. "Goodnight, enjoy your midnight snacks." And with that, he left Chuck on his mission.
The next morning, Newt went for his usual stroll in the woods, to process everything that happened in the last three days, trying to make sense of the things Thomas and Teresa told him.
It was clear that they both knew each other before coming to the maze. WCKD was the name of the organization that put all of them here. They made this maze, and they were the ones who send them the supplies. Why they did that was the bigger question? Thomas and Teresa were right. There is a reason they did this. If they just wanted to kill them, they could have already done that. But whatever the reason may be, he still hates them for doing this to him and the others.
He reached the spot where Thomas had fallen asleep, like a small baby, curled up inside Newt's blankets. The image of that memory made him smile. He looked so cute, sleeping peacefully.
Out of nowhere, the sad memory of him crying in this very spot came to him. How much broken he had got when he thought his friends were going to die.
Newt's smile got replaced by a frown and he started walking in the opposite direction. He was so glad they were all alive. Tommy was alive, he thought.
He didn't want to think about how sad he was, so he started thinking about the time he and Thomas were sitting together at that place after Ben's banishment. Newt mentally slapped himself when he remembered how he had lost his cool and yelled at Thomas.
It wasn't his fault. After seeing his friend's breakdown, he got a little angry when Thomas said that no one cared about Ben. Even so, it was stupid of me to yell at him, Thought Newt.
Suddenly, Newt remembered how Thomas had clutched his shirt tightly. He looked like he was trying to hold on to something so that he wouldn't get lost. And when Newt walked away from him, it felt like he left something behind, like he was supposed to do something else than walk away from him.
Even though he knew the younger boy for only two-and-a-half days, he felt a deep connection with him.
His mind started replaying the conversation he had with him yesterday. How he looked at Newt from below his long eyelashes, when he, without thinking, placed his right hand on the side of Thomas's face. How he smiled beautifully when Newt reminded him of being a runner.
Newt didn't realize how much time had passed by as he filled his thoughts with Thomas. He was now standing right beside the Runner's room. And he saw Minho bringing Thomas towards him.
He looked at Thomas, who was gazing at him back, smiling enthusiastically. This sight of him hit Newt, and he realized.
He liked him. He liked Thomas. Not like he liked his other friends. It was different, pleasantly different, yet somehow it also felt familiar. But most importantly, he repeated in his mind. I like Tommy.
