Well, you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go
Let Her Go - Passenger
Present time:
Todd slowly regained conciseness, although he still felt incredibly weak. He was still being dragged by the two guards, soon they stopped. Todd opened his eyes and saw they were standing at the edge of a deep cenote.
"No..." Todd protested softly, as his throat was dry "Wait... please."
The guards then just tossed him into the cenote. Todd's heart beat loud in his ears and his breathing quickened. He hit the water, hard. Todd then began to sink into the crystal blue water, he was very well aware of what was going on and more importantly the danger he was in, But his body seemed to be unable to respond to his brain's commands.
"...Todd?" A voice called from the bottom of the water
'Wha...?' Todd opened his eyes.
He saw his father, Well kind of, He was standing in front of bright light casting a shadow over his face, but Todd knew that voice from anywhere.
"It's good ta see you mate!" His father said happily, he held this handout and beckoned, as if asking Todd to join him "You don't have to be afraid"
'...no you're not my father, you're not real!'
"Don't worry about mum, she'll be fine!"
Todd then felt a pair of bony arms wrap around his waist and pulled him up 'I'm sorry dad... I want to see you again... but not like this...' he thought as he was pulled away.
Todd was dragged onto a small island in the middle of the water, his helmet was ripped off of his head. A pair of hands began to press on his chest, getting quicker and quicker a more time passed.
Todd's eyes snapped open and coughed out water, he was quickly rolled onto his side as he struggled for breath.
"Todd!" Hector yelled at him, sounding deeply concerned "Are you okay?!"
Todd coughed a few more times "I'll-I'll be fine" he replied voice merely above a whisper. He managed to sit on his knees and began to breathe deeply. He took off his suit's long sleeve shirt (He's wearing a black undershirt underneath) and gloves and laid them out on some rocks to dry out.
Suddenly Hector's bones shimmered gold causing him to stumble onto the ground.
Horrified, Todd attempted to catch him, only for an eerily similar golden flourish to course through his body causing him to fall right next to Hector.
They both lay there, realizing their fates.
"H-Hector...?" Todd whimpered
"Yes, Casco?"
"I'm going to die down here, aren't I?"
Hector thought about it for a moment. If Miguel got his blessing why is Todd still here?
Hector let out a sigh "I'm sorry... Todd"
Todd slowly stood up and helped Hector up "Me too"
The broken friends leaned on each other as they stumbled to a sheltered part of the cenote. Todd laid on his side and tried to recover.
Suddenly a scream shocked Todd back to reality 'Miguel!' he thought to himself. A splash echoed from the walls of the cenote. Running off of adrenaline, Todd ran to the island and saw Miguel struggling to stay afloat in the water. Todd waded out into the water and pulled him onto the island. They both collapsed onto the dry island where Todd was reminded just how weak he was.
Miguel noticed Todd on the ground motionless "Todd!" he shouted in concern and began to nudge him with his hands "Are you o-" Miguel then caught sight of his hands that were now completely skeletal. He stared at them before slumping to his knees.
"Kid?" Hector called out whilst staggering out of the darkness.
Todd slowly stood back up and noticed Miguel being hugged by Hector presumably trying to calm him down. Todd slowly walked up to them. Miguel quickly hugged Todd tightly "I'm sorry Todd!" He said with tears in his eyes "I should - I should've..."
Todd put his hand on his back "It's okay dude, you have a passion" He said reassuringly. Todd couldn't blame Miguel for the events of the night, he's someone who just wants to do what he loves.
Suddenly a golden shimmer ran Hector's bones again, Todd quickly caught him this time and gently set him down.
"She's forgetting me" Hector whispered in sadness
"Who is?" Miguel asked with grave concern
"My daughter..."
Todd thought for a moment "That's why you want to get across"
"I just wanted to see her again" Hector continued "I never should've left Santa Cecilia. I wish I could apologize, I wish I could tell her that her papa is coming home and that he loves her so much" Todd and Miguel were almost in tears at his words, they were genuine, completely genuine. "My Coco..."
Miguel instantly perked up at the name and immediately pulled out the picture and showed it to Hector, who was utterly shocked.
"Where did you get this?" He questioned
"This is Mama Coco" Miguel quickly explained while pointing at the picture "and that's my Mama Imelda, does that mean this is you?" Miguel pointed to the faceless man
Todd silently stood up and walked to the other side of the cenote to let them have their moment.
He sat with his back to a rock. The reality began to dawn on him, he was going to die here only a day out from the tour ending. He pulled out his phone and opened up the gallery, he pulled up a selfie of his sister, and his mother, and himself, taken just before he left on his tour. A tear fell down his face. He mostly worried about how his mother would react, she already lost her husband, losing her son would be utterly debilitating. Todd at least wanted her to know just how much he loved her and his sister.
Meanwhile, Miguel then screamed, "I'm proud we're family!" before running to a shallow part of the water and kicking it, Hector perked up and did the same before letting out joyful gritos. Miguel then turned around and saw Todd sitting alone with tear streaks on his cheek, his moment of happiness quickly faded away and was now being replaced with guilt. When the sun rises Miguel would at least have his family in the Land of the Dead, Todd on the other hand would disappear. Hector noticed Miguel looking at Todd and quickly his smile faded away, they both walked over to him.
Todd looked up and saw them walking toward him before turning back to his phone. Miguel saw the picture Todd had been looking at causing another ping of guilt to hit him.
"I was supposed to be going back home tomorrow," Todd said softly "Life is unfair isn't it?" Todd let out a small chuckle
"Todd I'm so sorry," Miguel said kneeling down "I didn't mean for any of this to happen"
"It's ok man really" Todd tried to reassure "I mean life's a one-way trip and we all make it sooner or later"
He then scrolled through the pictures on his phone until a video began playing, it showed him on the farm he works at occasionally. Todd in the video put his fingers to his lips then let out a whistle, then three farm dogs ran up to him the camera then panned to a herd of sheep that all came to the fence. Todd almost immediately stood up and ran to the center of the cenote. He put his phone away and dipped his fingertips in the water
"Okay, guys on one let out your loudest gritos you can possibly muster!" Todd instructed
Miguel and Hector each gave a nod
"Okay, Three, Two"
Todd brought his fingers to his mouth
"One"
Miguel and Hector then let out the loudest gritos they could while Todd let out a loud whistle. The sound bounced off the walls of the cenote before it went quiet.
Suddenly powerful wingbeats were heard nearby, Todd cupped his hands around his mouth "HEY! OVER HERE!"
Suddenly a large winged cat thing landed on the lip of the cenote before letting out a roar Imelda then peeked over the top, Dante then ran up beside it. They were saved!
"Miguel!" Imelda said in relief, her eyes then landed on Todd "and you too"
"Nice to see you too, La Doña" Todd deadpanned as he turned around to put his suit's shirt and gloves back on
Imelda's eyes then landed on Hector and her gaze hardened "Hector..."
"Imelda!" Hector said nervously while rubbing his arm "You look good!"
Todd put his helmet and goggles on and looked at the big cat before saying: "Please tell me we are riding that!"
The cat let out a chuff as if saying yes
Todd clapped his hands together "Let's go then!"
PS: I wanted to call the chapter: "This is not your grave, but you are welcome in it" but it wouldn't fit :(
