It's been quite some time since Sonic got turned into a Merhog, moved into Mertopia and got together with his love interest Merna the Merhog. Since then, Sonic and Merna have been happily together and even though they weren't officially married yet, Sonic had been crowned Prince of Mertopia since everyone, including Sonic himself knew that he wasn't going to leave Merna's side. It was now October 31st, which meant it was Halloween in Mertopia. And just like the Mobians on the surface, the Merbians under the sea surface liked to celebrate Halloween. In fact, there were Halloween festivities going on in Mertopia as we speak.
Sonic, Merna, the Queen of the Merhogs and a bunch of other Merbians were sitting by the waterside in a grotto in Mertopia. They were telling each other ghost stories on Halloween night.
"Alright, Sonic. It's your turn to tell a ghost story." Merna told her mate with a smile.
Sonic grinned and gave a thumbs up as he flicked his tail fins. "Alright, here goes. Have you heard the story of the Night of the Living Merhog?" The cobalt blue Merhog asked all the other Merbians currently present in the grotto. They all shook their heads.
"No, Sonic. I don't think we have." The Queen of the Merhogs replied.
Sonic smirked at that. "Well, I guess there's a first time for everything then." He replied before clearing his throat and began to tell the story.
"Once upon a time, on a Halloween night such as this one, three teenage Merbians went out swimming around the surface. They reached the surface and sat down on a rock above the sea surface and began to stare at the full moon that was in the night sky at the time. For some strange reason, on this particular Halloween night, the full moon was even brighter than usual. As the three Merbian teens stared at the full moon, a figure appeared in the moon, and it came crashing down into the water. It appeared to be a Merhog, although this Merhog was very different from others: This Merhog had a black fishtail, pale white fur, blood red eyes that lacked any pupils, sharp claws and fangs, and was rather feral in nature. The Merbian teens were frightened by this Merhog, and they began to swim for their lives, but this feral Merhog caught up to them and took them away. None of the three Merbian teens were ever seen again. It is said that this feral Merhog still roams the ocean every Halloween night, looking for his next victim."
Merna, her mother and the other Merbians were unnerved by Sonic's story. "Huuuu, that's quite the blood curling story, Sonic..." Merna shivered a little bit.
"It certainly is..." The Queen of the Merhogs agreed.
Sonic smirked and nodded. "Good thing it's only a ghost story with little to no truth to it. Because if the story was real, we'd be in a lot of trouble on a Halloween night like this, wouldn't we?" He asked the others.
"We sure would." Merna nodded back.
"Well, I guess that wraps up the ghost story event of our Halloween festivities. In about two hours, we're going to hold a Halloween dance. Until then, you're all free to do as you like." The Queen of the Merhogs announced.
Sonic and Merna nodded at that. "Hey, Merna. Wanna go out for a swim until the Halloween dance starts?" The cobalt blue Merhog asked his mate with a smile.
"Sure, I wouldn't mind." Merna smiled back as she took Sonic's hand and the two Merrhogs dove into the water and swam off, leaving Mertopia and soon being out in the open ocean. As they swam, Merna couldn't help but feel uneasy, and Sonic took notice of this.
"Hey, Merns. What's the matter?" Sonic asked his mate with a concerned look on his face.
"After that ghost story you told us, I can't help but feel that that feral Merhog from the story could come out to attack us..." Merna admitted as she rubbed her left arm with her right hand.
A reassuring smile then made its way onto Sonic's face as he placed his hands on his mate's shoulders. "Listen, Merns. It's just a story. It's not real, alright? There's nothing to fear tonight." He told Merna in a soft voice.
Merna looked into her cobalt blue mate's green eyes and smiled. "You're right, baby. It's just a story. It isn't real." She replied.
Sonic grinned at that. "That's what I like to hear. Say, you wanna sit on a rock above the surface?" He asked Merna, pointing up to the surface.
Merna looked up at the surface, then back at Sonic and nodded. "Sure, I don't see why not." She replied. Sonic nodded back and the two Merhogs swam upwards.
