Chapter Five- A Glorious Flight

At last, the warehouse that she bought for setting up her armor and weaponry was now ready for service. It has been tiring to deal with many factors, but now everything was set. Lena needed a break from the warehouse and laboratory setup, as she went back home, and caught up on some reading and some much needed greasy grub. A burger and onion rings were calling her name, and she was ready to get down and dirty.

As she was about to go to town, she was interrupted by a knock on the door. She opened the door to see Alex Danvers…, of the FBI who was waiting on her doorstep. She got that from her badge.

"Ms. Luthor, may I come in?"

"Sure, not like I have anything better to do."

As Alex walked through her door, Lena was watching her like a cat, to make sure that nothing would go wrong. She had to wonder why the FBI would care about her. Did they discover her flying? Did they know about the suit?"

She saw Alex look around the house for a moment. That girl that saved her life…, the doctor told her that a blonde woman had brought her in and waited outside her room. This could not be a coincidence. Lena swore in her mind, that despite the pain, she knew she saw this blonde do incredible things. Why was this agent so interested in her? As far as she knew, the FBI did not deal with metahumans, or aliens for that matter.

"Can I help you with something? Would you like something to drink?"

"No, that's fine. We have been following up with many of the victims of The Incident. We just wanted to make sure you were okay."

"Well, I am doing just fine. However, I never knew the FBI cared so dearly about me, that an agent would personally come to meet me. In fact, I have not seen the FBI anywhere in the city during the Incident. So, either you are a liar, or, you have an ulterior motive."

Alex narrowed her eyes. "What does that mean?"

Alex, you are a smart person, I think. I won't insult your intelligence if you won't insult mine. You are not from the FBI, yet you work for someone, someone who I know I am not going to like. And, you are here for something. I do wonder what it is."

Alex sighed. She heard about Lena Luthor, the black sheep of her family. A woman who had been dealt a tough hand in life. She did come here to learn about what she saw regarding Kara, but at the same time, she did not come for a fight. She knew what is was like to be considered second best. She was only looking out for her sister, not to make enemies. Perhaps, she might have forgotten that day's events. It would be possible.

"First, I am sorry about your loss. I have questions though. You were saved by someone. No one in your state with those wounds should have survived. I was just wondering if you remember anything about that day."

"I know what I saw. Someone came to help me that day. I don't know who, or what they are. All I know, is that they possess extraordinary abilities. That person saved my life. I owe him, or her. And, I don't blame that person for anything."

Alex looked at her in shock. "You…, you don't blame that person? Why? What have they done to inspire such loyalty?"

Lena sighed. "I am not so weak, that I cannot get past my losses. That person saved my life. And they never had too. That person put herself at risk to protect people, and me. If I can't even protect their secret, then I am pathetic. Yet, I understand why you are here. You are trying to snoop around for information. I can respect that, you have your job. I am not that person's enemy. With the metahuman crisis going on, I know why you came. You can trust me and think of me as an ally for that person?"

"How did you know that I don't work for the FBI?"

"If you did, you would have been here a lot earlier, than waiting years for a sit-down. You work for someone or an organization, someone nasty I think, and perhaps you are here to protect someone from that organization. That is why, no matter how distasteful you feel about that organization, you are doing it to protect someone, and I can respect that. However, you should consider this piece of advice."

"Tell whoever you are protecting the truth. Secrets have a habit of burning the worlds of loved ones to ashes. If they can hear it from you, you could soften the blow."

Alex sighed. She had to admit, she did not have a good reason for waiting this long, except a gnawing feeling in the back of her head. Perhaps, she thought that Lena would have memory loss or amnesia about that incident. Yet, something in the back of her head warned her that Lena was far too smart. That is why she had to see her.

"How do I know you are not lying?"

"You can shoot me, if it makes you feel better."

For some reason, Alex looked at Lena with some respect. Maybe, the rumors about Lena Luthor were wrong. Maybe, she was a woman who wanted to do the right thing in life. Lena was either pretending that she did not know that Kara saved her, or she was genuinely trying to protect her from the government. Either way, she breathed a sigh of relief that Lena Luthor was not an enemy. She would hate to kill her. To protect Kara, she would do whatever it took, even if she would never be able to look in the mirror."

"If it's okay with you, I would like a drink."

Lena smiled as she poured Alex a small amount of scotch in a glass. As they were drinking, Lena's thoughts drifted to the blonde-haired man. She wanted to find him and learn more about him. Apart from her, she knew that her mother was after this man. She would find him first.

However, it did beg the question what this fake FBI Agent came to meet her? Did she have a personal stake here? Why was her savior being targeted? Or, did they think that her injuries were fatal? Did Alex think she was a meta?

Either way, the timetable had to be moved up.

XXXXXX- One Year Later

For the first time in her life, perhaps in such a long time, Lena Luthor was having fun. A cup of coffee in her hand, she was listening to low background music as she was looking over the cyber rendering of her armor designs and weaponry. All the equipment had been shipped to her warehouse promptly and on time, as she got to work.

Humming a simple tune, she activated a digital keyboard and began the process of getting the designs for the armor ready, as she began crafting and creating colors for the final design; scrapping and removing what was unnecessary.

"Hope, as a precaution, remove all of my files from LexCorp, everything that is related to me. I am going to be taking a backseat to things now. All of this will require my full attention, and I don't trust my mother at all."

"I will create an encryption for your files. Is there no one you can truly trust a LexCorp, mother?"

"How many people can we truly trust these days who have our backs without any expectations? For the time being, our hands are the safest. My mother has her hands everywhere at LexCorp. I am sure she was rattled by our conversation. Its sad, but I don't think I could ever trust her."

"Understood."

Lena Luthor put her physique to the test, as she took a hands-on approach to physically crafting and welding the components for the armor. There was a time when she would have balked at doing this much labor. However, these were desperate times, and these difficult times called for strong measures. It was a tough process, but she was able to make a modern mechanical forge that could do what she needed done. She mentally patted herself on the back for finding an abandoned warehouse with an extensive amount of space.

Welding the mechanical components of the armor using Titanium and various chemical alloys made for much less of a headache in creating the armor. The armor would serve as a test subject that she would use and refine as time would pass. It would be foolish to think that this armor would not require upgrades later on.

After the components for the armor was assembled by hope, she decided to start working on the weaponry. The shell for the weapons was easy; the ammo was the difficult part. There were a lot of falls, and mini explosions that had happened, which thankfully, did not attract attention; she would need to invest in sound proofing the warehouse if needed. Eventually, her efforts bore fruit as she was able to make interchangeable batteries in the shape of magazines, as well as drum cartridges for one of her sidearms and the rifle. With time, she would be able to mass produce these with ease.

Crafting the shield was not a difficult endeavor, all it took was just good old hard work. The grenades were a bit of a tricky thing, but they eventually came together. However, one things she learned was that she could not fire them rapidly. She would have to conserve them and use them sparingly. Not to mention the cooldown period of the grenades.

However, the greatest piece to her armor were the reactors. She eschewed something big for something miniature and as small as she could get it. Something that could provide great energy to the suit, without asking for too much in return. This took a quite long time, even with Hope's help. However, near the end of the year, and after the sacrifice of many a holiday, she was able to create the reactor. She was still surprised that no one came knocking on her doorstep. The first time she put the reactor to use, the lights in the warehouse had gone out, and she was knocked backward from the reactor melting down. She must have had a guardian angel watching over her. After many failed attempts, it was done and ready for testing.

And then, came the flight capabilities of the suit. Unlike the reactor, this was not that much of a headache. She was able to create the pentagon shape for the main and side thrusters, as well as the armor plating to protect it. She decided to test out the flight capabilities herself. Little did she know that in doing so, she would be rewarded with a rare sight.

"Hope start recording. This is the first session."

"Are you sure mother? Perhaps a different day…"

"No time like the present. Risks must be taken. Besides, I will start the thrusters at 10%. Everything should be fine."

Lena started the thrusters at 10% capacity. She expected to float harmlessly in the air; instead she was knocked backward and fell unceremoniously into a wall. Hope was simply laughing at her, as Lena recollected her bearings.

Originally, she wanted to chastise her daughter, but she was shocked at the scene unfolding. She remembered laughing like that with her mother a long time ago. It only seemed like yesterday that she was enjoying the simple pleasures of laughing out loud at a joke, or at anything.

"Well, I am glad I could do something to make you happy."

"I am sorry Mother, it was just…, I warned you."

"Yes, you did. Well, we'll get back to it. Let's start at 2% and go from there."

And now, the moment of truth had finally come. Time had passed, but she was finally able to make a complete suit of armor. All that it needed was a test. Wearing a black body suit, she stood in the center of her laboratory, as the armor was fitted on her body by the machines. She took the helmet and placed it on her head, as she took a deep breath and exhaled.

"Hope, are you there?"

"Yes Mom, I am downloaded in. Brining up the HUD now, how do you feel?"

"Never better. Run a diagnostic test for me."

"Running one now. The armor has been constructed correctly. Both reactors are running at optimal capacity. Shall we test how you can move in the armor?"

Lena nodded as she started walking back and forth at a measured pace. Satisfied by what she saw, it was time for the next step.

"Hope, let's start a small test run. Let's take this outside."

"Mom, there are a mountain of calculations to determine whether the suit can truly fly…"

"Sweetheart, there is no time like the present. Open the side entrance. I will walk out…, just to entertain you."

As soon as Lena was outside, she took a deep breath and activated her thrusters. She closed her eyes, and set her resolve, as she started flying slowly in the air…, only to not fly. The thrusters were going on and off, as instead of flying, she was instead leaping. She asked Hope what was going on, and she replied that everything was fine, that maybe they need to try tomorrow instead. With a grunt, she hit the thrusters and started soaring in the air. She had done it, she was flying.

She started laughing in joy at her achievement, until the thrusters kicked out again. She tried to get things started again via Hope, but she plummeted to the ground. She activated the shield to take the majority of the fall. In frustration, she got up, and took off her helmet, as she kicked the ground, and kept on punching it in anger. Everything was correct, where did she go wrong?"

"Calm down mom."

"How can I be calm? Everything was supposed to go right. What am I missing? Perhaps, this is a mistake."

"Quitting so soon mom? I though you had much more of a spine. I wish I was built by someone who was not going to give up at the last gasp."

"Are you calling me a coward! After everything I have been through, you think I would just quit?"

"Then what was that just now?"

"I was frustrated, darling. I can be frustrated."

"Yes, you are. Mom, I was the one tampering with the thrusters. You did nothing wrong."

Lena had an incredulous expression on her face, as her anger deflated. "What…, why dear?"

"In that moment, you were not yet ready. You think you are, but you are not. If you want to fly, you must let everything go, and move forward. The things you want to accomplish, you are going to win and fail at times. Just like now. I know, that its difficult. You have been through a lot."

"You are going to fall and stumble mom. Some days, you will question why you are doing this, or why you got into this mess. I can promise you one thing. In time, the world will appreciate you for what you are doing. One day, you will be known as the Luthor who protected the innocent. Let it all go, mom."

Lena closed her eyes and remembered what her doctors told her. And then, she remembered all the good times she shared with her mother; her birthdays, eating pie, spending time on a cottage; she sighed happily. There were still good memories and good times in her heart and soul. She just needed to accept her losses well. Her losses did not define her; they would shape her and mold her to be powerful.

"Now, let's see if you are worthy of holding this power, this ought to be interesting."

Lena put her helmet back on. She kneeled to the ground as she closed her eyes. The thrusters were activated, and she soared, as she was flying, flying for real.

"Ohhhhhh…, yes. Wooooooooooooh."

She soared high above the clouds as she began moving through the air at high speeds that a human being could dream of achieving. Using the cover of night, she began approaching the city from a safe distance, watching the nightlife of the city. As she approached a Ferris wheel, she could see children easting ice cream, and one kid looked at her in shock. She gave him a wave, as she soared above the sea.

She once again reached the sky, and looked down upon the world, for the first time noticing its serenity and calm, and how beautiful National City truly looked. She shed a tear in happiness. Perhaps, things were now coming together.

Using the cover of night and the clouds, she circled above the city, testing the flight capabilities of the suit, moving and zigzagging though the air. She was whooping and cheering to accomplish so amazing.

"Hope, prepare for a superhero landing."

She moved at even higher speeds, as she entered the warehouse through its secret entrance through the ground. She entered her laboratory and landed powerfully on the floor.

"Yeah, I can fly. That was badass."
