Chapter III
Command Bridge of the Gotengo, Isla de Mara, Mexico
"Satellite imagery is showing Rodan moving at speeds completely impossible for atmospheric flight," Stanton announced. "ETA... five minutes."
"Holy shit," Jon exclaimed. "He must be pissed off as all hell."
"We need to help Roc," Kashiwagi said, "or she won't be here when he arrives."
"Right. Barnes, you there?"
"Haven't moved a muscle," the soldier said over the intercom.
"Get those masers up and running. We're gonna paint the Queen bitch to make her stick out for Rodan."
"Oh, trust me. Rodan will see her from the other side of the globe."
With that, the maser turrets began their barrage, and the Queen was hit broadside. Crazed with the battle, she flew after the Gotengo, but a heavy attack from the Super X's distracted her. The super-submarine kept up her assault, but the Queen was focused on the annoying craft flying around her.
With the attention drawn away from her, Roc began to eat the Meganula at her feet. The calories were quickly becoming converted into energy, and her strength was coming back.
"We're running out of ammo!" Barnes yelled. "We weren't prepared for this!"
"Just hold on, Barnes!" Jon replied. "Rodan's almost here!"
Sensing the urgency, Roc flapped her wings and attacked the Queen with unbridled ferocity. Her beak latched onto the insect's arm like a vice as she flapped with more intensity, pulling the Queen away from the Super X's.
The sounds of battle were quickly overshadowed by a loud scream. Everyone looked at the sky to see a black object rapidly growing bigger as it flew towards them.
Rodan unleashed another scream of pure fury as his talons reached out. The collision between him and the Queen was powerful enough to create a one-mile shockwave.
"Oh, that's a whoppah!" Stanton yelled as the Gotengo tipped to the side.
The Queen was no match for Rodan, as his uninhibited fury was proving to be a far greater weapon than hers. His greater mass and wing surface area also gave him a significant advantage, and the extreme heat he was giving off proved to be extremely painful to her.
Rodan bit and tore at the Queen like a rabid animal, tearing off chunks of her exoskeleton like they were paper. The Queen screamed and fought all she could, but Rodan was far stronger than her, and was quickly overpowering her.
Before long, the Fire Demon tore into her back and ripped open the titanium plates to reveal her spine. Using his sharp, hooked beak, he chopped the cord and rendered it inactive. The Queen died in an instant.
Rodan roared in victory. He had vanquished the Queen Meganulon, and rescued Roc.
With the threat gone, Roc had a chance to observe her savior. His muscles were almost stretching his molten rock armor, and his eyes burned like hot coals. In her eyes, Rodan was perfect mating material.
The question was, would he be receptive?
Rodan saw Roc splay her wings out in a display he remembered from long ago. His mate had done the same thing when she was seeking his attention. He recognized it immediately as a mating display.
Overtaken by fear of losing her, Rodan flew off. He aimed to return to Mount Api and continue his slumber.
Roc whined in protest and flew after him. He was the only other member of their species on the Surface, and they probably wouldn't be welcome in the flocks of the Hollow Earth.
"Why did Rodan just fly off?" Stanton asked.
"I don't know," Jon said. "Did he have a mate in the past?"
"We found bones similar to his in the Gulf near Isla de Mara."
"Any idea what killed her?" Dr. Kashiwagi asked.
"Well, it's dated back to almost 13,000 years ago, when Ghidorah first appeared. This may be why Rodan was so aggressive toward the golden bastard."
"And why he ran away." Jon looked up at the retreating Rodan. "He doesn't want to lose another mate."
