The Gobi Desert, Mongolia

The convoy of Monarch vehicles drove across the Gobi Desert, passing by packs of ravenous wolves and herds of Bactrian camels. In the middle of the convoy was a semi truck, and on it's trailer was a massive, diamond-tipped drill.

The mission of this convoy was to find out why Titanus Olgoi-Kharkhoi, the Mongolian Death Worm, refused to leave the Gobi Desert. Satellite footage revealed an anomaly in the center of the Desert, leading Monarch to believe it to be a pocket of radioactive material.

The leader of this expedition was Dr. Nobuo Munakata, who originally discovered the semi-fossilized remains of Dogora. The doctor observed the GPS as the convoy drew closer to the hotspot.

Finally, they reached it, and he held his hand out the window to signal a stop. The entire convoy braked to a full stop overtop the anomaly.

Immediately, the scientists, engineers, and soldiers went to work to set up a temporary base camp. After a few hours, it was functionally complete, and the scientists activated the drill.

It drilled straight down into the sand, before coming to the bedrock layer. Thanks to the diamond tip, it drilled straight through the rock with no problem. Eventually, the drill reached an area of zero resistance, and the team pulled it back up.

After letting the sand pour into the hole, Dr. Munakata had his colleagues measure the radiation of the subterranean air. Oddly enough, there was no radiation coming from the cavern they had drilled into.

Munakata reactivated the drill and had it go deeper. After reaching the cavern, the pressure readout on the control panel shook tremulously, before it maxed out. The depth gauged stopped completely, and the hydraulics whined.

"What the hell?" the doctor wondered.

He had it rise out of the hole, and the end revealed something shocking.

The diamond tip had been shattered. A few shards were still on the metal plate that had connected it to the shaft.

"How did this happen?" his assistant asked.

"I don't know," Dr. Munakata replied.

He would get his answer quickly.

Two pairs of insectoid limbs tore through the rock and sand in the span of a millisecond. The sheer force of the limbs' punch threw rocks at near-supersonic speeds and caused the sand to turn into mini-bullets.

From the hole came a massive centipede-like creature. It's exoskeleton was red in coloration, and it's hundreds of tiny black legs carried it out of the hole. Beneath it's neck was a pair of mantis-like arms that, if Dr. Munakata was right, had the muscle structure of the peacock mantis shrimp.

The triangular face of Olgoi-Kharkhoi looked down upon the base that had been built over it's home. It lowered it's head down to their level, and opened it's mandibles.

From the inside of it's mouth came a long, fleshly tongue that darted in and out of the base like an anteater's tongue. No member of the expedition was spared, as the slimy tongue gathered them up in droves and brought them to it's mouth.

Only Munakata was left, as he had hidden beneath his makeshift desk. Olgoi-Kharkhoi found no interest in a single human, as it was a mere waste of energy. Instead, it went back down it's hole and filled it in with a sand-saliva mix.

Soon, the Mongolian Death Worm would return, but not yet. Now, it must sleep, and digest.
