A/N: Now that Arcane S1 is finished, I wanted to try my hand at a slightly longer Fic than the few One-shots I wrote. Here is the first chapter of it.
I make no promises that it will ever be continued or finished - I can only write when I am in the mood for it.
I find it quite hard to write mentally unstable Jinx, so by the time this story starts properly, she is going to be closer to Powder (and will answer to that name), letting Vi take the lead in public.
It had been almost a month since that night. Since Vi and her sister had made the decision to leave their home. Despite her anger toward Jinx, Caitlyn had helped provide supplies - Money, Food, Camping gear - and had bid them farewell (after pulling Vi into a tearful hug)
It had been slow to start, the two city girls were unprepared for the wide open wilderness. They spent many nights cold and hungry as they began to learn. Powder learned how to hunt, while Vi had figured out the best ways to light fires and set up camp. In time, both sisters became comfortable with their new life.
That time out in the wilderness had also done wonders for Powder's sanity. It was easier to ignore the voices when she knew Vi was the only human for miles. To realise that Vi had never truly abandoned her when they spent the nights sleeping side by side.
But even with their newfound knowledge of the wilderness, they still started to long for the familiarity of the city. Which is why they were approaching their first main destination - the port city of Bilgewater.
The descriptions of Bilgewater hadn't been exaggerated, it was wild, lawless and dangerous. In short, the sisters felt at home.
Wandering the filthy streets, they gained an understanding of how the city worked. How the various gangs and crews interacted. The most prominent captains vying for power. Each trying to stake a claim to the recently vacated post of 'Reaver King'.
In their exploration, they did their best to stay out of trouble - however they were never very good at that.
"Move". The shout came from a bleeding reaver, as he and several others entered the tavern, one hand clutched against a wound on his side, while the other held a pistol, which he shot back out the door - aiming at whoever was pursuing them. They took positions around the various windows and doors, while others looked around, clearly hoping for some kind of back exit.
Vi and Powder shared a look. This would quickly get ugly, and the chance they would be caught in the crossfire was high. A brief nod, and a tilt of Vi's head was all the communication they needed. Powder subtly picked her Minigun off the floor, while Vi walked towards the largest group of the pirates - whose attention was too focused on whatever was outside.
One turned around, only to be dropped by a strike to the jaw. And the fight was on.
Powder opened fire on the other large group, clustered around the large window. They were quickly mowed down by the rapid fire. Flipping the table she was standing next to, and taking cover behind it. Just in time too, as a barrage of shots came from the door into the kitchen. Tossing a grenade over the table, then a few shots of her pistol took care of that group.
Meanwhile, Vi was working her way through the rest. The close quarters made their firearms useless, and Vi methodically struck, blocked and dodged their clumsy swings. Soon, there was only the leader (or at least, that was what Vi assumed he was, given his fancier apparel) remaining, he pulled a short cutlass from his belt, preparing to lunge at Vi, only to drop as a bullet passed though the back of his skull.
The shot came from the door, where whoever was pursuing the pirates had reached in the chaos. Leading them was the shooter. A young woman, probably only a few years older than Vi, with the longest, brightest hair the sisters had ever seen - a very ornate pistol in her hand. After a glance at the dead or unconscious pirates, and the other patrons of the tavern cowering behind tables, she slipped the pistol back into its holster - and approached Vi and Powder.
"You two just saved me quite a bit of trouble, it could've gotten messy if I had to storm the place"
"Yeah, and we would have been caught in that mess anyway," said Vi, "Better to fight on our terms"
The pirate just smiled. "True" she agreed, holding out a hand. "I'm Captain Sarah Fortune"
"I'm Vi, this is my sister, Powder"
"If you want a better Tavern than this, you're welcome to join us at the Drunken Shark. The drinks are on me."
Vi and Powder exchanged another glance. "Sure," Vi agreed, "They got anything as sweet as you"
Captain Fortune froze for a second, before laughing brightly. Powder just sighed audibly, "Must you flirt with every girl you meet?" she muttered.
"Only the pretty ones," Vi replied brightly. Powder just sighed again, rolling her eyes.
"Do you know what happened to the last person who flirted with me?" she warned, but her tone was amused.
"I've heard the rumours, but that only makes it more fun"
"So, where are you two from?" questioned Captain Fortune, after they had reached the new Tavern and sat down with their food.
"Piltover, the Undercity"
"What brings you to Bilgewater?"
"Is this an Interrogation?" Powder questioned sharply, but Captain Fortune just chuckled.
"Not really. But I'm curious, Those men you fought used to be some of Gangplank's best." Her face turned sour at the name, "But you took then down easily enough"
"Wandering," said Vi, answering the earlier question. "We had had enough of Piltover, wanted to see more of the world.
"Well," said Miss Fortune, "If you are looking for work while you are here, I'm sure I could find something for you"
"What kind of work?" Vi questioned suspiciously
"Depends what you can do, and what you are good at. Fighting obviously, but you don't take me as the type to fight for someone you don't really know." She turned to look at Powder, "Those guns you carry are rather unique. Your work?
"Yes"
"I'd pay quite the handsome sum if you made more weapons like that for my crew"
"A tempting offer," said Powder, but she clearly wasn't convinced yet.
"Full access to my Artificers and Gun-smiths tools and supplies for you to utilize," Captain Fortune added.
At this, the Sisters exchanged a glance. Throughout their journey to Bilgewater, several inventions had passed through Powder's mind - A minigun wasn't exactly the most subtle or useful hunting weapon, and Vi had grown quite fond of the Gauntlets from Jayce (which had been left with Caitlyn), and hoped Powder could make something similar.
"I think we could work something out, at least for a short time"
They stayed in Bilgewater for several weeks - crafting weapons and helping Captain Fortune return Bilgewater to some semblance of peace (as close to peace as Bilgewater could be), before deciding it was time to move on. Sarah, while upset to be losing them, sent them on their way with full coin purses and on one of her fastest ships.
Their destination. Ionia
