Prologue
Secret Laboratory, Hawkins, Oregon
Eleven followed her Papa to the Isolation Chamber, where she would go underwater and do what her Papa wanted her to do.
"OK, sweetie," the old man said. "There's some bad people out there who want to do bad things to us. I want you to find them, so we can stop them from doing the bad things."
Eleven nodded meekly. She was not one to argue, or ask for rewards. That was something her Papa did for her.
After putting on the mask and everything else, Eleven descended into the water. It was dead silent, save for the faint sounds of water. She closed her eyes and tried to reach out with her mind.
She heard the voice of a man. She tuned into it, and saw the man standing over a desk.
"No, I know that the Decimation has cut us short," he said, "but I need to know if my girl is alive. She's the only family I could possibly have, right now."
Eleven felt oddly drawn to him. Why was he so familiar? Did she meet him once?
"I know, Mark," a teenage boy said, fading into the scene. "I want to do the exact same thing. But you need to listen to reason. How can we find her? There are still three billion plus people in the world, and finding her in such a crowd is nigh-on impossible."
This boy was also familiar to her. Who were these people?
The vision was suddenly interrupted by a low growling. Eleven turned around and saw a horrid sight.
It was a humanoid creature, hunched over the carcass of another creature. It had grey, rough skin and long limbs.
Eleven carefully approached it. She didn't know if it could harm her in this 'ethereal plane,' but she was too curious to be cautious. She held her hand out to touch it's shoulder, but she never got the chance.
The beast turned around and roared at her. It's mouth opened like a flower, with five jaws separating to reveal a mouth full of teeth. Eleven screamed in fright as her mind struggled to resist the psychic influence the beast had on her.
Around her, the room shook and quaked with extradimensional energy. Tendrils snaked from the wall behind the Isolation Chamber, and at their source, was an orange portal.
In the panic that ensued, everyone forgot about the girl who tore her way out of the Chamber. She slipped out through the air ducts and crawled her way to safety.
She stopped upon hearing a scared whimpering. She looked through the vent and saw something incredible.
A giant reptilian creature was huddled up in the corner of a large room.
It looked... young, like it had just hatched from it's egg. It's head was larger than it's neck, and it's eyes made up the majority of it's face. It's tail was only as long as it's body, and it had a small ridge of scales on it's spine.
Eleven wasn't empathic, but she felt what it was feeling: Fear.
Eleven used her powers to rip the grate off of the vent. The reptile heard the sound and cowered behind it's hands. Eleven fell out of the vent and walked up to it. The hatchling looked at her.
Something happened in that moment of eye contact. Eleven felt everything that the reptile felt, and the reptile knew what she felt.
Eleven looked away, but the reptile continued looking at her. Finally, it took a step towards her. Eleven looked at it, and held her hand out in a friendly manner. The hatchling pressed it's snout against her hand.
In that moment of physical contact, Eleven saw a name on the wall.
Minya.
