Chapter II
Secret Laboratory
"Dr. Brenner," a scientist called out, "we have a situation."
The scientist in charge, Dr. Martin Brenner, walked over to where his associate was. "What is it?"
"We have an anomaly in Sublevel Twelve. There's a large influx of energy in the lab, and most of the air has been tainted with radiation and decomposing organic matter."
"What kind of energy is in there?"
"Seems to mostly be tachyons, but there's some other kind of energy that I can't identify."
Brenner looked at the readouts of the energy influx. Like his colleague said, it was mostly tachyons, but it also revealed an extremely high-energy radiation, one that had a far shorter wavelength than gamma rays.
"I think we found the delta wavelength," he said.
"What's that?" the assistant asked.
"It's a theoretical electromagnetic wavelength that, supposedly, can result from interdimensional travel."
"So, what we're dealing with is a portal to another dimension?"
"I think so."
Abandoned Metalworking Shop
"You sure they'll be safe here?" Lucas asked.
"Yeah," Mike replied. "Dad never uses it after he changed jobs, and Mom never comes out here, anyway."
"What about your sister?" Dustin asked.
"She doesn't give a damn about any of us."
"Man, that's cold."
Eleven and Minya looked around in curiosity. Most of the shop's metalworking equipment was gone, and only tables and desks remained. Most of the surfaces had a toy or game on them.
"You like it?" Mike asked. "You can stay here for a while. You'll be safe."
Eleven looked at him and smiled slightly. Minya's eyes seemed to reflect a similar reaction.
"Now, I hate to ruin the happiness," Lucas interjected, "but do you know where Will is?"
Eleven's smile faded. She averted her gaze to think for a second, before looking back up and holding her hand up. It was a little beneath her height.
"Will?" she asked.
The boys were confused, but Dustin quickly caught on to what she was asking.
"Yeah, that's him," he answered, seeing that she had measured out his height.
She seemed to know who he was, and walked over to a table where the D&D board was. She then flipped it over and placed a figure on the black side of the board.
"Will," she said simply.
"OK, what?" Lucas asked, clearly confused.
"Any idea what she's talking about?" Mike asked Dustin.
"I think she's talking about an alternate universe," Dustin answered. "You know, like how the game has a Vale of Shadows? Well, I think she's talking about another universe, like ours, but very different."
"Different how?" Lucas asked.
"Well, it could be very different from the Vale of Shadows." Dustin turned back to Eleven. "Do you know how he got there?"
She took another figurine and placed it on the overturned board next to the first. It was the Demogorgon.
"Yep, it's the Vale of Shadows."
