Chapter IV

Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Eleven, and Minya continued exploring the fake crypt. The walls were covered in paintings that depicted various moments in a history that, seemingly, only Dustin could understand.

If his translations were correct, the universe that this crypt-like building came from was very much like theirs, but the resident humans advanced at a slightly faster rate. Although this crypt had to be more than four hundred years old, the paintings showed people using pistols, a widely used colonist commodity.

In this universe, the Titans had never gone to sleep, and many people were friends with them. There was even a story of Mothra having two twin priestesses that had some sort of connection to her.

However, there were people that despised them or saw them as a threat, and as such, they resorted to extreme measures to have them killed. In fact, in this story, Ghidorah was awakened in a time where the buildings were still simple boxes. It was shortly after Ghidorah's defeat that a man held up a bag that leaked the presence of the Badness. This creature turned people into Demogorgons and fought the Titans for supremacy. Eventually, the Badness was locked up in this crypt and things seemed to be OK.

"One problem," Lucas said. "If things were all hunky-dory after the Badness was locked in here, why was Will taken to the Vale by a Demogorgon? Shouldn't they have been killed off when the Badness was removed from the equation?"

"I'm thinking that either they reproduced away from the public eye," Mike proposed, "or something happened that killed off the humans."

"Guys, what is this?"

Dustin was pointing to a line of ashes that they had passed over in looking at the paintings. It stretched from one wall to the other, and was very thick and clumpy.

"Did they use this to draw the pictures?" Mike asked.

To test it, Dustin took a cinder and rubbed it on the wall. It left wispy trails that could come off easily, while the pictures were hard to rub off.

"Nope, not for artistry," Dustin noted. "Besides, why would they burn it in a line? It's like they were trying to scare something deeper into the crypt."

When they stopped talking, they heard Eleven hyperventilating. She was staring into the darkness, and Minya was right behind her, watching with a worried expression.

"El?" Mike said. "Are you OK?"

She didn't respond, beyond pointing her finger at the darkness. As she did, a low hissing was heard, like an alligator.

"Oh, shit," Lucas gasped. "We should get out of here. Like, now!"

It was the right call to make, because as soon as they started moving, the darkness grew thicker and the hissing became louder. The group started to run out of the crypt,

until Minya quickly spun around and shot a stream of smoke out of his mouth.

His spines glowed blue as the warm smoke flooded from his mouth. A loud screeching was heard as the darkness thinned slightly. Quickly, Minya sprinted past the door as the boys closed the door.

Whatever was inside was strong, and pushed against the door with all it's might. As strong as it was, the boys' combined might was enough to keep it in.

The struggles seemed to lessen eventually, even though the screeching kept up. An errant glance at Eleven told Mike that she had something to do with it, as her hand was outstretched toward the door and her nose was bleeding.

Finally, the mysterious creature stopped pushing against the door and left. Mike and his friends looked at Eleven, who was leaning against a worried Minya in exhaustion.

"What the hell just happened?" Lucas wondered aloud.
