Chapter I

Filith, Moon of Gorath

The Milano entered orbit around the second moon of Gorath, the Xiliens' homeworld. The Guardians had received their third mission from the Nebulans since after Ronan the Accuser's death.

"Alright, run down the basics of the mission, so we don't forget," Quill said to Rocket.

"We place the transponder in the target, we deactivate the defense turrets, and we get the hell out before the zilios kill us," the raccoon listed.

"They're called Xiliens," Gamora reminded.

"Whatever."

"Alright." Quill prepped the ship for atmospheric entry. "Everyone remember what their job is?"

"I'll place the transponder," Gamora said.

"I'll shut down the turrets," Rocket added.

Drax was fast asleep. Quill would have woken him up, but he didn't really need that much of a briefing. All he needed to know was if someone needed help.

"Alright, let's go."

"Our plan is going perfectly," the Elder said.

"I'd agree, if I knew what we were working toward," his Cohort replied.

"It's quite simple, my friend. We're going to let them take our weapon."

"Why?"

"They will take it to the Nebulan's special weapons base, and we can track it to the base."

"Ah, brilliant! If only I was clever enough to see what you were plotting."

"If only, my friend. If only."

The plan was going well. Rocket had disabled the defensive turrets (they were password-protected, so he had to make do with some bombs), and Gamora snuck the transponder into the Xiliens' superweapon.

It was a massive cybernetic reptile, large enough to topple most buildings on Xandar. It had a metallic beak with mandibles on either side of it's mouth. On it's back were three red sails, and it's arms used long sickles in place of hands. The rest of it's body was covered in black scales.

"I really don't want this thing to wake up," Gamora whispered to herself as she returned to the Milano.

The job done, the Guardians watched as the Nebulan retrieval ship, which looked like a scrounged-up Kree warship, descended over the titanic creature and dropped a claw to pick it up.

Only to be stopped as a spark of electricity shot from the claw to the creature's head.

"What was that?" Rocket wondered aloud.

The Nebulan's ship fell apart at the seams as electricity burst through it like flames. The electricity flooded into the creature's head and caused it to spasm violently. It let out a blood-curdling scream as it's red visor glowed red.

"You've got to be kidding me," Gamora muttered.

The creature looked around for the source of the electrical discharge, but only found the Milano, and it's non-Xilien occupants.

"Shit!" Quill yelled as he gassed the ship and pulled up really fast to avoid a laser blast from the beast.

"What the hell is going on?!" Rocket cursed.

Another creature rose from underneath one of the walls surrounding the beaked cyborg. It was like a beetle, with drills for forelimbs and piercing green eyes.

Yet another beast slithered into the enclosure. It was a giant centipede, with long mandibles and red eyes. It's legs were all mechanical.

"Guardians!" a Nebulan said on the communicator. "Are you OK?"

"What the hell did you make us do?!" Quill asked angrily.

"They were not supposed to wake up! Something overloaded our ship with electricity, and the power went directly into Gigan's brain!"

"Oh, great!" Gamora sat in the seat right next to Quill. "They have names!"

The Milano avoided another laser blast from 'Gigan,' while the beetle followed with a green bolt from it's horn. The centipede stared at the ship with an unfeeling gaze.

"Something's coming in from high orbit!" Rocket said from his workshop. "It's big, and it's descending fast!"

"How fast?" Quill asked.

"Fast enough to split the damn ship in half!"

Quill swerved the ship to the side just as a yellow light slammed into the ground outside the enclosure, toppling the walls and surrounding buildings. The crew of the Milano watched in awe as the newcomer rose from the crater.

It was like a giant dinosaur, but it's tail dragged behind it. It's muscular arms were just long enough to reach past it's head, and it's legs were strong and pillar-like. It's face was box-shaped, with a short snout. It's body was covered in pulsing yellow crystals.

The beast screeched at Gigan and his allies, who roared back. The screaming woke Drax up from his sleep.

"What did I miss?"
