Written for day 4 of Yuridetta week, and today's prompt is 'Affection'. This is (kind of) a modern AU where the two are already in an established relationship, so that way I get to explore more of how they'd show affection for each other as a couple. This is also loosely tied to the fics that are coming out on days 5 and 7 of Yuridetta week, so look out for that!
This is why Yuri made plans. If there was a surprise mission, he could rest assured that the rest of the things in his life had been taken care of. If there was an earthquake, he always knew what files needed to get out of the building and which ones were safely backed up on the organization's hard drive. If both things and more happened at the same time, he could handle it. No matter what happened, he could always step back, look at the drawing board, and figure out how the hell he'd fix it.
Except for this one thing. And that one thing just happened to mess up his plans for today. Today! Of all the days in the year, it just had to be today!
First, there was a surprise mission on the other side of the continent. Ok, he had a plan for that. Then someone tried to blow up their HQ. Not exactly what he had prepared for, but the plan fit anyway. But then there were robberies he had to follow up on, another shady politician to double-cross, and Constance had cashed in on the favor Yuri owed her. All of that he could handle, but almost everything then led to one goddamn thing.
Paperwork. It led to lots and lots of paperwork.
Yuri sighed as he entered Seiros HQ, the leading autonomous intelligence organization in all of Fódlan. They handled everything: corrupt politicians, armed robberies, spy networks, you name it. They had scouted Yuri themselves, but as he scanned in his ID badge, he was beginning to regret joining at all.
Yuri took the steps up to his office two at a time. He wanted to do the paperwork last week, but that's when the almost-explosion happened. He tried to do it a few days ago, but that's when Seteth had called an emergency meeting to deal with a new group that was forming in eastern Fódlan. He even tried to do it yesterday, but that's when Claude from the Intelligence Branch had asked for a quick favor that turned out to be not-so-quick. By the time Yuri was done with it all, he had to rush to start preparations for tonight, and even then he didn't have time to finish everything!
I can forget about getting out early, Yuri thought to himself as he strode through the Counterintelligence floor. At this rate, I'll be lucky to get out of here on time!
Logically, he knew that Bernadetta wouldn't mind, but that's not how Yuri did things. Rarely did he ever give his word, but when he did, he stuck to it. And now he was on the verge of breaking it on a day that actually mattered.
"Morning," he greeted curtly, rushing to sit down at his desk.
"Morning, Yuri," Byleth replied from her own desk. The two of them worked in a small team in Counterintelligence, and apparently they were doing such a good job that their whole team had been given a separate room for their desks. That didn't make the stack of paperwork be any less than it—
Was. It was. Yuri flipped through the minuscule stack of papers on his desk. There was the report for the favor Constance asked of Seiros HQ, some last details that needed to be filled out about regarding of the robberies, and that was it.
"Have you seen the documents I left here last week?" Yuri asked Byleth.
Byleth didn't even look away from her screen. "No need to worry about that."
"Considering it's my job, I think I do need to worry about that." Yuri scanned the rest of his empty desk to find absolutely nothing. Close to desperation, he yanked his desk drawer open, and found something he definitely did not put there.
Laying on a stack of folders was a small square of purple paper. Yuri picked it up and immediately recognized the small yet elegant handwriting that fit perfectly within the page.
Hi,
You said you had a lot of stuff going on at work, so I did some of it for you. I was nervous about how I did it, but I checked with Byleth and she said that everything's ok! Now you can relax a bit today.
Happy anniversary!
Bernie
A breathless laugh left Yuri's lips. He looked back at the small stack of papers, back to the note, back to the papers, and back to the note.
"When did she find the time to do all this?" He wondered out loud. "Thinking about it, how did she get clearance to do this?"
He looked over at Byleth, who was already seated at her desk and typing away. She didn't even bother to look at him. And yet, if Yuri looked close enough, he could just barely note how the corner of her mouth was twitching.
Yuri huffed, not even bothering to hide the smirk that stretched across his face.
Looks like he'll be leaving early after all.
"Can I open my eyes now?" Bernie asked.
"Still no," Yuri said, keeping a hand pressed firmly over her eyes. With his free hand, he guided Bernadetta down something. It was a bit long and winding, with a couple steps here and there, and Bernie was pretty sure that they had been in an elevator at some point, but other than that, Bernadetta had absolutely no idea where in Fódlan she was.
"Oh, come on. It's been an hour!"
"Half an hour. And I want this to be a surprise."
"You already surprised me!" Bernadetta just knew she was blushing as she said that, but with Yuri being stubborn, she had no way to take out her compact mirror and check. "You got off work early. I think that counts."
There was a short pause. "That was all thanks to you."
"That was just—Ack!" She yelped as something caught on her foot. She felt herself tip forward, but Yuri quickly caught her and set her upright, wasting no time in once again leading her to the mystery destination. "That was just something I wanted to do for you."
Yuri gave her hand a squeeze. He led her down yet another corridor, and she heard the creak of a door swinging open. Yuri led her into the room and removed his hand from her eyes. He chuckled. "You can open your eyes now, Bernadetta."
Bernadetta pried her eyes open. The sudden rush of light prickled her eyes. She blinked rapidly to adjust to the lighting, and when she finally did, she gasped.
"Yuri," she breathed.
Bernadetta stood in the middle of a large room with Cherrywood floors, a high ceiling, and at least two—no, three!—dozen candles lighting up the room with a soft glow. A circular table blanketed with a white tablecloth sat in the center, with two chairs sitting opposite to one another. A small bouquet of red roses was the centerpiece. And more than that, the far wall of the room wasn't even a wall at all. It was a window that stretched from floor to ceiling, giving Bernadetta a high-up view Enbarr. The city stretched before her eyes, and every building and house twinkled with pinpricks of light.
Bernadetta looked over at Yuri, who was smiling to himself as he watched Bernie walk around the room. "You did all this? For me?"
Yuri shrugged in his elegant shirt. Bernadetta had to force herself to not google at it, but it was kind of hard when Yuri had also decided to wear a tight-fitting vest with it. "Part of it was the restaurant staff, but I did pick out the decor. And the food. And the musicians who will be playing in the main room, but I tipped them extra so that they'll play loud enough for us to hear. And we're in a private room, so no need to worry about anyone spying on us."
"That was one time!"
Yuri chuckled and pulled out on of the chairs. "My lady."
Bernadetta giggled and accepted the open chair. After yuri pushed it back in, her went to sit on his side of the table. That was when Bernadetta noticed a little button next to his plate. Something that let him ring for the waiter, she figured. She watched as Yuri pulled out an expensive-looking bottle and began to pour bubbling liquid into their glasses. Bernadetta looked away to take in the whole room once more, and that's when she finally spotted the small chandelier that gleamed amid tiny, refracted crystals.
Crystals…"Oh," Bernadetta exclaimed, digging into the small purse that hung off her shoulder. I have another surprise for you!"
Her fingers fished out a compact box which she slid over to Yuri's side of the table. He raised an eyebrow at her, and Bernadetta hunched into herself.
"You were looking at it the other day when we were shopping," she babbled, "so I thought you would like them. I mean, unless you've already bought it! I still have the receipt, so you can return them, or I can return it if you don't like—"
"I love them."
Bernadetta raised her head and saw how Yuri turned the gleaming cufflinks in his fingers. The crystal cufflinks and been cut into the shape of piercing daggers, with the hilts tinted purple. Yuri immediately took off the cufflinks he was currently wearing and replaced them with Bernadetta's gift, and Bernie smiled at how well they stood out against the white shirt.
He liked them! She cheered in her head. He really liked them!
"What a coincidence," he said, breaking Bernadetta out of her thoughts. "I have another gift as well."
From beneath the tablecloth, Yuri pulled out a string-tied cloth that was folded around a rectangular object. Bernadetta took it and carefully undid the strings. "You didn't have to," she said. Goddess, now she was absolutely sure she was blushing.
"I wanted to." Yuri smiled at her and very pointedly looked back at the half-unwrapped gift in Bernadetta's hands.
Bernie gave him a quick pout before finally undoing the knot and peeling back the cloth. It was a good thing she was sitting down because had she been standing, she would've jumped up so high her head would've hit the roof!
"This is the special edition!" She yelled. Her fingers traced the emblazoned bronze title, 'The Light of the Saints', of the leather-bound book. Written by famed author Cethleann, it was a book Bernadetta had devoured and loved from the moment it hit shelves. No one knew who was behind the pen name it was, but everyone, especially Bernadetta, could see how incredible of a writer Cethleann was. Bernadetta's eyes glided over the careful details which decorated the cover in a mixtures of bronze swirls. "I thought they were sold out!"
"Well, it's a good thing I have an inside man who reserved one for me." Yuri smirked.
A light went off in Bernadetta's head. "That's why you wanted Sylvain's number!"
"That, and to remind him to go easy on you this week." Yuri's smiled softened. It was one of those smiles Bernadetta knew were just for her. "I know you have deadlines, but I think the great Bernadetta von Varley can take a break from her manuscript."
Bernadetta fiddled with the corner of the book. "I'm still only on the second draft."
"Doesn't matter. It'll be amazing either way." Yuri raised his glass to her. "Happy anniversary, Bernadetta."
Bernadetta beamed at him and raised her own glass. "Happy anniversary, Yuri."
They clinked their glasses together, and Bernadetta's heart soared.
