KellHound270's Work

Chapter IX

Boston, Massachusetts.

Madison walked through the empty streets of Boston. The city was evacuated due to Ghidorah's approach, so she, Andrew, and Ken were alone in the Monarch base.

She paused for a moment to adjust the strap on her shoulder. In her bag was the Orca device, the one that she and Ken took when the Red Bamboo killed his mother.

She fought back tears as she continued on her way to Fenway Park. Madison saw Kina as an aunt, and Ken was, in effect, the closest thing to a second brother she ever had. She wanted to make sure that the Red Bamboo's work was foiled.

For humanity. For Kina. For Ken.

Beneath the Atlantic Ocean

The crew of the Gotengo rose from where they were laying. The sub had crashed when it was caught in a vortex. Luckily, the damage seemed to be minimal.

At their port side, Bakunawa waited for them to move. He was concerned for their well-being, and when the super-submarine finally moved, he swam a short ways ahead of them, leading them into a massive cavern.

Or, more accurately, a submerged temple.

"What is this?" Mark wondered. "Greek? Egyptian?"

"All of them," Chen said, "or maybe none of them."

The submarine released a trio of amphibious drones to scout ahead of them. Bakunawa was perplexed by them, but made no actions toward them.

The walls were inscribed with images that resembled the Titans. Between them, humans were bowing, and at the top of the walls was one creature in particular.

"My God," Mark gasped.

"'zilla," Stanton added.

The drones continued on, but the Gotengo stopped.

"Why are we stopping?" Serizawa asked.

"Because I still want kids someday," Stanton replied, pointing to a radioactive symbol on his screen. "Preferably, without flippers."

The drones continued on as the sub and it's Titan companion hung back. Two of them faltered and went dead from the radiation, but one continued it's course.

The drone reached an air pocket, where it switched to it's helidrone mode. It looked around, and stopped when it saw one thing.

"Godzilla," Serizawa noted.

The drone feed then went out.

"Good night, Gracie," Stanton said comically.

"He's been coming here every time he's on the brink of death," Jon said. "To recuperate. To evolve."

"Can we launch a nuke?" Serizawa asked the captain.

"Sorry, sir. The launch tubes were damaged in the crash."

"Well, we're screwed," Stanton said.

"Not unless someone decides to go out there and deliver it themselves," Mark proposed. "Jon?"

"I may absorb radiation like a Titan, but I won't survive such a blast," the hybrid replied. "Anyone who goes there, won't be coming back."

"I'll go."

Everyone turned to face Serizawa.

"No, Ishiro," Jon objected. "What about your grandson?"

"He'll understand."

"There has to be another way," Chen said.

"There's no time to argue. I'm going."

Serizawa put on the radiation suit. It wouldn't keep him alive in the intense radiation of the air pocket, but it would slow the process.

"The mixture in the air tanks should give you more time to set it up," Stanton said. "It's been an honor, man."

Serizawa shook Rick's hand, before hugging Ilene tightly. He shook Mark's hand, before turning to his friend.

"I'll miss you, Ishiro," Jon said, before hugging him. "I'll help Mark take care of Ken."

"Thank you," Serizawa said. "Here. My notes."

The doctor handed Jon a notebook. The hybrid took it and shared a tender look with his friend.

Serizawa lowered himself into the mini-sub. He piloted it to the air pocket, and found it increasingly harder for him to focus. Behind him, Bakunawa followed him to provide any needed assistance.

The mini-sub surfaced in the air pocket, before it was carried up the stairs by Bakunawa. The Sea Dragon set the sub down in front of Godzilla, and quickly sniffed Serizawa before returning to the water.

With increasing difficulty, Serizawa set up the nuclear warhead to go off within a minute. He looked up as Godzilla released a labored breath.

Serizawa walked up to the King as Godzilla opened his eyes. He saw the doctor approaching him, but made no threatening moves against him.

Ishiro Serizawa placed his hand on Gojira's snout, which made the reptile's eyes soften. As the warhead approached zero, the scientist uttered his last words in his native tongue.

"^Goodbye, old friend.^"
