Chapter VIII

Moansta Island, Sea of Japan

Godzilla laid in the shallow lagoon. He was tired and a little depressed from losing his Queen. No matter how many times she came back, it still pained him when she died.

The larvae sensed his sadness and crawled up his back. Mothra sat on Godzilla's nech, while Battra was just behind her. Godzilla touched his nose against Mothra's mandibles in a caring manner.

Not far off, the waves parted to reveal the form of Angilas, Godzilla's ally and close friend. Angilas walked up to Godzilla and laid beside him, keeping him and his charge company.

Mothra was a bit cautious of Angilas, but Battra was getting braver, and scuttled over to him. Angilas looked at the caterpillar in curiosity, and allowed the black larvae to crawl up his back.

Having had enough of laying around, Godzilla stood up slowly, leaving Mothra sitting on his neck spines. Angilas stood up as well, letting Battra ride on his back. Godzilla lumbered toward the island's extinct volcano, his depression still sapping his energy.

A loud splashing drew the Titans' attention to the shoreline. The familiar skull face of Leviathan rose from the water, carrying something that should have been left alone.

Mothra Prime's corpse.

Godzilla's brow furrowed as he roared angrily at Leviathan. The snake, at first, didn't understand, and just stared at Godzilla in shock. Another roar told him to drop his load immediately. Leviathan did so and swam off, unwilling to anger his King any further.

Godzilla walked over to Mothra Prime's dead body, his eyes once again somber. The larvae crawled to their mother, and Angilas bowed his head in respect.

Godzilla knelt down to the larvae's level. He growled at them, telling them what they must do. The larvae, at first, were upset at what there were to do, but Godzilla only lowered his head and closed his eyes as liquid began to fall down his face.

Understanding that their guardian didn't want this either, Mothra and Battra crawled closer to their mother's body. They opened their mandibles and began chewing on Mothra Prime's body.

Godzilla walked away, leaving Angilas to look after the children. It was painful for him to have the children do this, but they had to inherit their mother's energy, as well as the energy of their uncle.

Conference Room of the Gotengo, Siberia, Russia

"In light of this tragic moment," Foster said, standing in front of the screen that displayed the dead body of Mothra Prime as Leviathan carried it away, "we have more news on the M.U.T.O.s. They are all related."

"How so?" Rogers asked.

"The M.U.T.O. from Japan is the mother. The larva and smaller M.U.T.O. in Nevada are her children."

"One question," Falcon said, raising his hand, "why are they so different? Shouldn't they both be adults, or both be larvae?"

"Not if they mature in different ways," Ken proposed. "The adult may mature like a dragonfly, and could actually be a nymph. The larva could mature like a butterfly, and go through a pupal phase before it becomes an adult."

"In that case, they may be different genders," Serizawa added. "Since the M.U.T.O. from Japan, or M.U.T.O. Prime, is a female, the nymph from Nevada may be female as well."

"And that would make the larva a male," Graham noted. "We should follow them. They may go to the new reactor in Washington."

"We'll keep our eyes on them," Foster said. "They won't make a move without our knowledge."

"What about the eggs?" Romanoff asked. "Are they connected?"

"We took a few DNA samples," Stanton answered. "They're definitely M.U.T.O. Prime's clutch."

"If these things mature," Mark said, "they'll cause tons of damage, both to us and to the Titans."

"What do you suggest, Dr. Russell?" Foster asked.

"Kill them," he said. "As soon as those pylons are ready, we destroy them."

"Let's not be hasty," Graham said. "They couldn't all be bad."

"They are," Sam Coleman said. "The females will mature and kill whatever Titans they find with their spores. They will become a plague of parasites."

"How do you know this?" Serizawa asked.

"This," Jon replied, switching the monitor to a picture they took in the cave. It showed the drawing of M.U.T.O. Prime, standing over Dagon with two tube-like extensions coming out of her abdomen.

"What the hell?" Barnes muttered. "What is this?"

"This is the Death of Dagon," Jon said, taking Foster's place at the monitor. "M.U.T.O. Prime has a pair of ovipositioners that each place one spore in a Titan's gut. These are the spores the two in Nevada came from."

"Well, what about the males?" Graham asked.

"As a nymph matures," Ken explained, "they need to eat more and more food. With dragonflies, it's mosquito larvae. With grasshoppers, it's vegetation. With the M.U.T.O., it may be her brother."

"Why her brother?"

"In the various Titan species, there are too few of them for unrelated intercourse. As such, these M.U.T.O.s will likely end up as mates, and the consumption of the male is common in the arthropod world."

"That's messed up," Barnes said.

"OK," Foster decided. "We'll activate the pylons once they're ready. I'm not about to have an army of M.U.T.O.s overrun our planet."

"Agreed," Rogers said.

"I'm for that," Romanoff chimed in.

"I don't wanna die to any of those things," Wilson added.

Seattle, Washington

M.U.T.O. Prime walked through the buildings of Seattle with little abandon. She knew her children were in the area.

Her daughter walked up to her, the nymph's eyes pulsating steadily. The adult rubbed her snout along her daughter's face lovingly, and the nymph purred in contentment.

M.U.T.O. Prime noticed her son rubbing up against her leg. She lowered herself to his level and gently nudged him playfully. He crawled up her face like a centipede on a tree.

The adult carried the larva to the nearby reactor. She let him crawl off into the giant smokestack.

M.U.T.O. Prime was about to search for more sustenance when she heard a sound that few could hear. It was the sound of her clutch in the cold plains. They were in trouble.

She trilled to her daughter, telling her to guard her brother, and then quickly walked to the ocean. She dove into the salty waters and vanished quickly.
