Okay, I've been excited about an idea that I've had and jumped right into it. I figured it was time to bring it here to this site. However if you would like to read this as a reader insert, you can do so over on Tumblr! Same username, same fic title. Anyways, I'm really excited about the ideas behind this one. And while part of this is kind of movie rewrites, I promise I've added my own twists to it and it's going to places that I hope you all will enjoy. So please, leave any feedback that you can. It will be greatly appreciated.
Happy reading!
Fear coursed through Amelia as she slept. With each portion of the dream that played out, she tossed and turned. Her mind mixes memories in with the dream that it had been creating for her. And at each part of the dream that she least expects it, the tesseract would appear in one place or another.
Amelia walked further into the room that the tesseract seemed to be on display. With each step she took, the cube brightened, attracted to the woman's energy for an unknown reason. She could hear the others on her coms warning her to take things easy. But there was something about the way it caught her attention that Amelia couldn't ignore it.
As she came to a stop before it, she began lifting her gloved hand to touch it. A voice in her mind telling her to interact with it. To touch it and feel the power radiating off of it. At the same time, she could hear Fury telling her to back up and leave it be. But Amelia couldn't stop.
Her eyes shifted to an eerie blue color to match the tesseract as she lifted it from its spot. And the moment she did, a burst of energy released, throwing Amelia a few feet back. It was as her body hit the ground that Amelia woke up.
As her eyes shot open, she realized she was too close to the ceiling. A dark green glow surrounded her before her mind fully awakened, causing her to fall back onto her bed. Her heartbeat going a mile a minute as she tried to get a hold of herself. Ever since her accident with the Tesseract, she'd have dreams similar to the one she just had.
A hand ran over her face as she sat up. Her raven black hair that framed her face had been stuck to her skin due to the sweat. The green glow that surrounded her was long gone as her hands had done so. These new powers of hers were something she didn't entirely understand herself. After some practice, she could get the glow to resurface when she wanted it. But that was as far it ever got.
Of course that was willingly. When she was sleeping her subconscious seemed to get more access to it and at times her whole body would be alight with the glow and several times she'd find herself hovering over the space she last fell asleep at.
Moving out of her bed, she moved to get ready for her day. Mornings after a dream such as that one, she'd go out to her back yard and meditate for a while. To somehow calm the energy that was swarming within her. For the most part, it always worked. Today shouldn't be any different.
But as she made her way into her kitchen, a faint buzzing filled her head and it caused her to stop in place. As she reached for the hidden gun behind a painting, she kept her eyes on the kitchen entryway.
"That's not necessary, Flores." Hearing the voice had caused Amelia to stop reaching for the gun and roll her eyes.
"I should have known that even with locked doors you'd still find your way in if you wanted to." She said as she walked into the kitchen. As she walked in, she took note of Fury sitting at her table before going over to her coffee maker and setting it up for a fresh pot.
For as long as Amelia had worked for S.H.I.E.L.D she should have known that one day they'd come calling for her. Her mind was racing for an explanation as to why Fury would come to her home. It could be that they wanted her to come back for a mission. Or she could be the mission herself. She remained calm though. She knew that if this was about taking her in, the place would have been surrounded by now. Not much of an escape.
"What is it you want?" She asked as she reached up into the cabinets above her head for a mug, before looking over her shoulder. "Coffee while we're at it?" She watched as he nodded his head but didn't say anything else.
She could feel how he was observing her. The differences in her since the last time they had seen each other. Amelia was quickly becoming one of their top agents, but after she resigned she stayed mostly to herself. To Fury, it was a complete 180. The confidence she displayed had dimmed in comparison. The hair she normally kept short and above her shoulders was now down to her mid back. Her honey brown eyes lacked the spark he normally saw within them. As he watched her, Amelia continued to pull a few things out of cabinets and drawers as the coffee brewed. Once it was ready, she walked over to the pot.
"I've got an 0-8-4 I need you to help with." He said as he watched her begin to pour the coffee.
"The last time I helped you with an 0-8-4 I ended up with this." As she lifted her empty hand up a green glow emitted from it. "Along with a surveillance team that is really shitty at keeping a low profile. I'd rather not come back with something else I can't explain."
Fury didn't say anything at first. His mind playing back to that particular day he had Amelia help him out with moving the Tesseract. The slightest hitch in plans had caused the cube to send a burst of energy straight into Amelia. The scream that left the woman before him had been heartwrenching before she passed out from the pain. When she awoke, Amelia was different. She had a power that she couldn't control or even begin to understand.
It was one of the reasons Amelia resigned from S.H.I.E.L.D. She didn't like having the attention on her during her recovery and even afterwards. She had become an 0-8-4 herself and she needed her own space to rediscover who she was with those new powers.
"I assure you it's just an observation task with Coulson." He said after a moment. "We've got a hammer stuck within a crater. We're sure its owner will come around to collect it and I'd prefer it if you were there along with Barton."
"What about Nat?" She asked as she turned towards him, bringing the mugs of coffee to the table.
"Romanoff is currently finishing up her work with Stark." The words had caused Amelia's eyebrow to raise.
"You sent Nat to keep an eye on Stark?" She asked as she took a seat across from Fury as he reached for the coffee she slid over to him.
"Someone had to do it. And if I remember correctly, that was supposed to be you before you resigned." Fury gave a nod of his head before he brought the mug up to his lips, taking a drink.
"We both know things wouldn't have worked out as they needed to." Amelia said as she watched the man before her. "You wouldn't be only keeping up with him, but me as well. Bigger messes than necessary."
"How is the road to self discovering?" He asked as he placed the mug back on the table. "Everything you hoped it'd be?"
She huffed as she took a drink from her own mug. "A lot of meditation to keep the buzzing at bay."
"That buzzing warned you I was here." He noted with a slight tilt of his head.
Amelia found her mug to be interesting. "That's not the first time you've seen that happen."
"As you said, there are people who do their job poorly. Which is why I am hoping that for this one, you'll come join Coulson in New Mexico." He watched as she looked up at him. "Barton will be there as well if that will sweeten the deal."
She chuckled as she shook her head slightly. "Barton is probably pissed that I resigned."
Fury gave a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Only one way to find out."
Fury knew how upset Clint Barton had been when his closest friends decided she was resigning without telling anyone. One minute he had been sitting beside her bed when she was injured and in the next she was gone without another word. When Fury began keeping tabs on Amelia, Clint never asked about any of the information that was received. Though there were plenty of times where he'd look like he'd be getting ready to ask Fury but never did. Fury would have handed the information over if he had asked.
"What happens if the owner of the 0-8-4 returns?" She asked before taking a drink of her coffee. She wanted to know the details before she agreed. She'd make Fury believe he had her before she pulled away once more.
"Observe, and if we need to, engage." He began to stand with that. "I know you, Flores. You made your decision a few minutes ago. We believe there is no need to engage. But if there is, I know you can handle it." He began to walk towards the side door. "I'll tell Barton he can have his rematch."
A small smile pulled at Amelia's lips as she watched him walk out of the house. As much as she believed she wouldn't be going back, Fury was right. She had made the decision a few moments ago. And if there hadn't been familiar names brought up, she never would have made that decision.
From the moment Amelia got off the plane in New Mexico there was a slight buzzing in her head. It reminded her of the many times the buzzing would happen when there was danger lurking. But no matter where she stopped to look for it, it was nowhere to be found. She hadn't mentioned it to anyone since she was loaded up onto a plane. She was sure she could keep the buzzing from becoming too much of an annoyance.
"Agent Flores." The words themselves had caused Amelia to stop and turn to look for the source.
Seeing another agent not too far from her, she made her way over to him. "Coulson couldn't even meet me?"
His eyebrow raised. "Coulson has other priorities at the moment. He'll brief you upon your arrival."
Amelia rolled her eyes as let out a deep breath. "Then lets not keep the man waiting."
The time between the airport and the onsite facility, Amelia had been able to go through a file or two that she had been handed the moment she was in the car. She could see why Fury wanted her there. Before Amelia had resigned, she had worked well with figuring out occurrences just as the ones in the folder she had been reading.
Jane Foster's work had been incredible and Amelia had enjoyed seeing the research she had done. This 0-8-4 was definitely something she was going to love looking at it. A hammer that had been stuck within the crater of something extraterrestrial. But her eyes widened as she looked over the thermal images. The shape of a man could easily be seen within the images
As the car came to a stop, she never took her eyes off the file in her hand. Even as she moved to get out of the car, her eyes were scanning over the pages. But the moment she stepped out, a buzzing came through her head that caused her to lift one hand up by her ear.
The moment she did, she caught an arrow in her palm before the green glow formed and melted the shaft of the arrow. A small smirk pulled at her lips as she closed the file with one hand and turned in the direction of where the arrow had come from.
"I think your aim is off!" She called out as she continued to follow the agents in. She dropped the broken arrow as she did so, knowing the owner of it was watching and listening. Though part of her did wish he had been close by so she could see the reaction on his face.
"I know that had to hurt Barton." Coulson said the moment Amelia was in ear shot.
"Oh I know. He'll survive." Amelia said as she handed him the files. "Jane Foster did a hell of a job. Have there been any new developments since you've found it?"
"The 0-8-4?" Coulson asked as he began to walk down the makeshift hall. Amelia began to follow him. "The item itself has been creating interference with the tech."
"An interference how?" Amelia asked as they rounded a corner.
"Glitches mostly." He said looking over at her. "Nothing that hasn't worried us too much."
"Fury mentioned this is mostly an observation." She wanted to make sure as well as make it known that she didn't want to stay longer than necessary. "Only engaging when necessary. I don't see how I was needed to babysit a hammer that is only causing tech interference."
Coulson chuckled. "You really haven't changed, Amelia."
"I try not to. But given the circumstances I'm sure you can understand why I'd rather be back at home." She said with a nod.
"Give me a week." He said as he came to stop by the exit where the hammer could be seen. "If there is no one that tries to reclaim it, I'll let Director Fury know that you are free to go."
Amelia thought about it for a moment. "Fine. Where do you need me?"
"Surveillance for now. Fury mentioned you know when something is coming." He wouldn't admit it out loud, but Coulson knew Amelia would come in handy. For as many times as someone could be blindsided, they'd know ahead of time.
"Don't push it. We both know I don't even know the extent of these powers." She said with a shake of her head.
"It's enough to melt one of my best arrows." Clint's voice filled the air causing Amelia to turn towards Clint with a smirk on her face.
"You should know better than to annoy someone with a shiny new toy." The two of them glared at each other for a moment as Clint came to a stop in front of her.
It wasn't long before both of them smiled and pulled each other into a hug. The action itself had been a reminder that the two hadn't seen each other in quite some time. After a period of time of not seeing each other, they would pull this as a welcoming back moment.
"I've missed you." Clint said as he pulled away from her.
"So have I." She said with a nod. "I just needed some time."
"I know." He said with a nod. "You took a hit and to be honest, I'm surprised you even decided to come for this."
"I'm staying out of the action this time around." Amelia nodded her head. "I'm only here if things get way out of hand."
Clint looked between her and Coulson for a moment. "I've got her Phil. We've got a bit of catching up to do before you put her on desk duty."
Amelia chuckled as they watched as he left them. "So no hard feelings about disappearing without a word?"
He scoffed. "You may have left, but I knew where you were all along." It caused her to roll her eyes as they began making their way towards the surveillance room.
Amelia ran her hands along her face as she looked over the monitors. There hadn't been anything out of the ordinary for the last several hours. She had spent most of her time making sure that there wasn't anyone flying over their newly formed restricted site.
"Now I remember why I wanted to leave." She mumbled causing Clint to chuckle.
"Too late now." He said never taking his eyes off the few screens in front of him. "You agreed to come, now you gotta do the job. Unless you want something more exciting to happen."
Amelia shook her head. "Not at-" Her words stopped as the buzzing sound came alive full force in her head. Amelia brought her hands up to rub at her temples trying to get it to stop. But she knew what it ment.
Clint hadn't missed the way she had winced as her hands had touched her temples. "What is it, Amelia?" He asked, wanting to make sure she was okay. He didn't know how she reacted to certain things.
Before Amelia could even try to get words to form, a message came over the coms signalling the reason why the buzzing was going off.
Agents down! We've got a perimeter breach!
