Kent Farm
Mid-afternoon
Clark was in his loft, looking for the key to the portal in the cave. Opening the book where he kept it, he found it was missing. Hearing movement behind him, Clark knew who had taken it even before he turned around.
"I know about your little shortcut to the Fortress Kal-El," Kara said, holding the key in her hand.
"Give me the key Kara. I wanna talk to my father Kara," Clark ordered.
"There's no point in confronting to Jor-El," Kara insisted, moving to walk away only for Clark to grab her wrist
"You said he disowned me and I want to know why," Clark said firmly.
"This is bigger than just Jor-El," Kara said as he took the key from her. "A darkness has come to earth. I've been trying to draw it towards me, so I can stop it."
"I was the one sent to Earth to protect it. Jor-El should have come to me," Clark said angrily.
"He said you're not ready," Kara admitted.
"He's afraid that I'll fail," Clark realized, equal parts angry and hurt. "After all the trials and all the training that I've gone through. I know my own destiny and its here."
"Kal-El, you think you have all the answers… but the evil that's out there is like nothing you've ever seen," Kara said as Clark turned away from her. "It takes advantage of people's doubts."
"There's nothing out there I can't handle," Clark said confidently.
"Pretty strong words from a guy who can't even figure out his own powers," Kara snapped and Clark turned around to face her. "It's the truth Kal-El. You've been on Earth all this time and you still can't fly. You can't come at this thing without all of your abilities."
"But what if you can't fight it on your own?" Clark demanded and Kara hesitated. "You'd rather put the world at risk and trust Jor-El than believe in me?...you're my only family. And I need your help."
After a moment, Kara nodded. She knew Jor-El would be angry, but Clark was her cousin. And he was right; she had no idea what she was facing. She might need his help.
Metropolis
Same time
"So how does a Whitelighter afford a car?" Paige asked as she and Sam sat in a car, waiting for Godfrey to head to his next destination so they could follow him.
"It's a rental. I have a bit of money saved up from when I was human," Sam explained.
"So, what are we supposed to do exactly?" Paige asked.
"Godfrey has a flash drive in his suit jacket pocket. We just need to take it from him," Sam explained and Paige nodded.
"So, Oliver Queen huh? It's hard to believe he's a future Whitelighter," Paige noted and Sam smiled tightly.
"He's a good man, he just has trouble letting people know," Sam said as he saw Godfrey come out. "There he is."
The pair watched Godfrey get into a limo with his driver. After a few moments, it started driving down the street. Turning on the car, Sam began following him.
Kent Farm
Late afternoon
Standing on top of the windmill, Kara was trying to teach Clark how to fly. Key word being 'trying'.
"I think I liked it better when I was showing you the ropes," Clark muttered as he looked down at the ground uneasily. "I guess this is easy for you, huh?"
"It's not easy or hard. It just…it just is. I mean, I reach for the sky and the rest of the world falls away. I'm not thinking of anything, I'm just in the moment," Kara explained.
Clark nodded, taking her words to heart. Closing his eyes, Clark tried to concentrate. But super hearing was a double-edged sword. The more he tried to concentrate, the more the sounds of the outside world kept breaking his concentration.
"The more I try to clear my head, the more I hear," Clark said in frustration as he opened his eyes.
"Kal-El, instead of trying to force the noise out, why don't you just try to focus on one thing?" Kara said, remembering how he had helped her learn to control her super hearing when she had first arrived on earth. "Like that butterfly."
Following her gaze, Clark saw a butterfly had landed on the edge of the windmill.
"Make it your whole world," Kara suggested.
Taking a calming breath, Clark concentrated, the only sound he heard being the flapping of the butterfly's wings. Looking up into the sky, Clark readied himself before taking off. He made it several feet up into the air before he felt gravity begin to pull him down. As much as he tried, he couldn't stop himself from falling. He crashed through the roof of the barn and landed on the ground with a loud thud. Clark sat up, humiliated, which wasn't helped by Kara speeding up next to him.
"It was a start," Kara said kindly as she offered him a hand.
"It's not flying if it's mostly falling," Clark said in frustration, throwing a broken board away as he pulled himself to his feet, ignoring Kara's hand.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have ignored your father's wishes. I shouldn't have helped you," Kara apologized as she turned away from him.
"No, I just-I need to figure this out," Clark insisted.
"You're doubting your powers. You're frustrated, you're unfocused. You are not ready," Kara snapped as she turned back to him.
"I'm not just gonna stand here and do nothing," Clark snapped.
"The darkness, it came through a rip in the universe three weeks ago. You think it's just gonna stand here and wait until you're ready?" Kara snapped back. "Just leave it to me."
"Three weeks ago?" Clark asked, a thought occurring to him.
"What? What is it?" Kara asked as she saw the look on his face.
"I think I know how it came here."
Metropolis
Not long after
Clark sped up to the rooftop where he had fought Zod, Kara appearing behind him a moment later. Heading over to the Crystal console, Clark opened it as Kara watched curiously.
"You said the darkness came through a tear in the universe. It made sense. Three weeks ago, I was on this rooftop and opened a portal using the Book of Rao," Clark revealed. "If the darkness came through a gateway, maybe it can leave through one."
"I've used my bracelet before to open a portal," Kara said as she took it off her wrist. "This dark force is like a disease."
"How did it become so powerful?" Clark wondered.
"It can see your thoughts and feelings. It can prey on the one morsel of weakness even the purest person doesn't realize they have inside them," Kara explained. "It can possess you, but it can't possess someone who is pure of spirit. Who has true clarity of purpose. But your father-"
"Thinks it'll prey on some weakness inside me," Clark finished.
"Kal-El," Kara started gently. "If this dark force can possess someone with your abilities, you could be the greatest weapon this planet has ever seen."
Paige and Sam had followed Godfrey to a club called Maxwell's. As they walked inside, Paige's first thought was that her doppelganger from the parallel world would have felt right at home here. It was full of blaring music and exotic dancers. So much for family values, Paige thought darkly.
"How do we find Godfrey?" Paige asked.
"We need to split up. You need help, just call my name and I'll sense you," Sam told her.
Paige nodded, walking in the opposite direction as Sam. It didn't take her very long to find Godfrey. He was being led into a back room by two exotic dancers.
Perfect.
Seeing a leather jacket hanging on a rack, Paige grabbed it, putting it on before untying her hair, letting it out and giving it a wavy look. Paige then walked into the back room, seeing the two dancers had tied Godfrey up in restraints.
"Beat it girls. This one needs a real woman," Paige said in a seductive voice.
The dancers looked at her annoyed, but Paige simply looked at Godfrey, giving him her best bedroom eyes. It seemed to work, given the aroused look on Godfrey's face. Paige tried her best not to vomit.
"If she thinks she can handle me, let her," Godfrey agreed.
Shooting Paige glares, the two dancers walked out. Perfect. Paige walked over, swaying her hips as she hands went right to Godfrey's suit.
"So, what's a man like you doing in here?" Paige asked as she began sliding her hands towards his tie, making a show of untying it.
"Everyone has a dark side," Godfrey said huskily and Paige felt bile rising up in her throat.
"I'm sure you do," Paige said, reaching into his jacket pocket and feeling the flash drive. "Thank you."
Godfrey paused as she pulled out the flash drive.
"Ah, I see. You're here to help Oliver Queen. I can see you're a champion of the light. And yet…you feel lost, alone," Godfrey said as he looked at Paige intently, freaking her out.
"Right. Well, either way, you're not getting this back," Paige said as she pocketed the drive.
"I don't care about the drive girl," Godfrey said and Paige's hair stood on end.
She felt it then, something inside him. A darkness.
"You're not Godfrey. You're controlling him," Paige realized.
With a smirk, Godfrey yanked himself free, the cuffs snapping as Paige stepped back.
"Light," Paige cried, holding out her hand.
A nearby light Orbed into her hand as Godfrey got to his feet. She tried to strike him with it but he easily caught it, to her shock.
"You're a Witch. And yet, I also sense Whitelighter in you. This is gonna be fun," Godfrey said with a smirk.
Paige saw Godfrey's eyes turn pure black before he yanked the light from her and struck her across the head with it. She went down, out cold as Godfrey looked at her with a dark smirk.
Watchtower
Not long after
"And I thought the Fortress was your only hideaway," Kara muttered, looking around in awe as Clark led her inside.
"It's called Watchtower," Clark said as he walked over to a computer, beginning to type. "It's more of a command post. I sort of banded together a group of heroes."
"A lot's changed since the last time I saw you Kal-El," Kara said after a moment, eying Clark thoughtfully. "Maybe Jor-El underestimated you."
Clark didn't respond, focused on what he was doing.
"This is how we access the news feeds," Clark told her.
"We should cast a pretty wide net, the host is probably in a leader with influence," Kara pointed out.
As images of leaders began popping up, Clark frowned as he saw one of Godfrey.
"This Godfrey guy, he's everywhere. He seems to have a personal vendetta against heroes," Clark said as he clicked on Godfrey's image.
"Any citizen who's been a victim of the vigilante menace, you're not alone. They pretend to be your saving grace, then they turn on you and violate your trust," Godfrey said.
Clark frowned, hearing something. Using his super hearing, he realized what. There was someone else speaking through Godfrey.
"Do you hear that?" Clark asked.
Looking at him in confusion, Kara then used her own super hearing and discovered the same thing he did: another voice speaking with Godfrey.
"That's it," Kara said.
"The darkness is in Godfrey," Clark agreed.
"He's been pretty public, so it can't be hard to find him," Kara said as she walked up to the computer, pulling up security feeds. "Looks like he was down town not long ago."
"Wait," Clark said, paling as he saw someone walk into the club after Godfrey.
"What?" Kara asked, looking at the feed and seeing a woman and an older man walk in after Godfrey. "Do you know them?"
"I know her," Clark muttered as he stared at Paige's face.
Metropolis
Not long after
When Paige came to, she was hanging from chains, her arms suspended above the floor and a gag around her mouth. Godfrey was standing a few feet from her, looking at her with a smirk.
"Welcome back Paige," Godfrey said, smirking at her look of surprise. "Yes, I know your name. There's not a thing about you I don't know. I've turned a lot of people, even Witches. But I've never turned someone who was part Whitelighter. This will be fun."
On a higher level, Clark and Kara entered the club. Kara looked around at everything oddly.
"What is this place?"
"It's kind of hard to explain and we don't have time for it," Clark said, worried about Paige. "We need to split up. We'll cover more ground. And try to blend in."
Clark then walked off without another word to Kara, who looked after him in annoyance.
"It must have been hard, losing your parents, knowing it was your fault," Godfrey said, smirking as he saw Paige shout through the gag. "Sorry, did that hurt?"
Suddenly, they heard a door shut. Godfrey smirked, putting a hand to his lips and mockingly shushing her. Godfrey then walked off as Paige closed her eyes, concentrating. After a moment, she was able to Orb the chains away and she fell to the floor. Picking herself up, she got to work on untying the gag around her mouth.
Clark entered the room, looking around for Godfrey or Paige. Seeing a figure walk into the room, Clark quickly realized it was Godfrey.
"Godfrey, where's Paige?" Clark demanded.
"She's around. Witches, they never know when to butt out of my business. But enough about her," Godfrey said, speaking with the same voice Clark had heard speaking through Godfrey. "I'm much more interested in you, Blur."
Clark stopped, surprised that Godfrey - or the darkness possessing him - knew who he was.
"Are you sure you can win against me?" Godfrey egged him on as he approached Clark slowly. "You know what I am. You know the doubt in your heart. You so called heroes are false gods, all of you. And when people stop believing in you, you'll shatter like glass. All of you."
"Where is Paige!?" Clark snapped, trying not to let Godfrey get to him.
"Curtain!"
Clark watched in surprise as Godfrey was suddenly wrapped in a curtain that wrapped around him in a collage of tiny white Orbs. Turning to the side, Clark saw Paige standing there, looking at him with matching surprise. There was no doubt in Clark's mind she had heard everything. Which meant she knew he was the Blur.
Clark's thoughts were broken when a burst of darkness erupted from Godfrey, ripping the curtain to shreds.
"I can sense it within each of you, such turmoil. We will go far together."
The darkness erupted from Godfrey again, this time moving to surround Clark and Paige. Before it could do anything however, Sam suddenly Orbed in front of Paige, standing in front of her protectively. At the same moment, Kara jumped in front of Clark, striking the darkness with her bracelet. There was a bright flash of light and then the darkness was gone as Godfrey was thrown one his back, unconscious.
"Is it gone?" Sam asked after a moment.
"For now," Kara said, turning to Clark. "Are you alright?"
"No, no I'm not," Clark said after a moment.
Clark was far from okay. And, as he looked over at Paige, he had a feeling it wasn't going to get any easier.
I know not much changed this chapter, but this chapter was mainly to have Clark and Paige learn each other's secrets, sort of. Now that they now a little bit about each other, things will start to change a little bit more.
