Hugo could hardly contain his excitement as he stood at the entrance of his new school, Collège Françoise Dupont. He felt so small compared to the imposing building in front of him. Was it always this big? The pamphlet made it seem smaller? He felt his heart race in his chest.
"Hugo?" He was so caught in the moment he forgot that Nathalie was standing right next to him.
"Sorry, just excited and nervous? Is there a word that describes both? Maybe I don-"
"It will be alright, Hugo. Just breathe."
"Thanks, Nathalie."
"If anything happens or if you don't feel up to it yet, let either your grandfather, me, or Gorilla know and we will be down here in a heartbeat."
"Thank you, Nathalie. I owe you one."
"You owe me several in fact."
He chuckled, "How many?"
"At least ten." She gave him a small smile, "You should get going, you don't want to miss your first class."
"Oh right! Tell Papa I got here safe!" He waved back as he ran, almost tripping and falling on his face in the process. Nathalie sighed, watching as Hugo ran off into the courtyard. Some things never changed in the Agreste family.
The young black blue haired boy felt like a mouse trapped in a maze as he walked his way around the building. He had his schedule out in front of him so he could look between the piece of paper and the room numbers that hung on the side of the doors.
"Hold on, 127? I'm supposed to be at 227?!" His eyes widened as he realized he was on the wrong floor. As if spending several minutes on the wrong floor wasn't bad enough, the bell rang as well.
"No, no, no, this can't be happening." Hugo said to himself as he sprinted up the stairs. He felt butterflies in his stomach as he ran, or maybe that was just because he was out of breath? Either way, he wanted to make a first good impression and he was already ruining it by being late. Maybe he could just sneak in quietly. No one would notice if he just quietly made his way to the nearest seat. It would be fine, he would be fine.
Only the door decided to make a large bang as he opened it wide open. He felt frozen like a statue as every eye in the room looked at him. Every kid that was talking once was now in hushed silence as they stared at him.
"You must be lucky number 13." The teacher checked off something on his holo clipboard, "Don't worry, you haven't missed anything, we've just started."
"Thank you, Monsieur." He mumbled, his face flushed red with embarrassment, as he walked over to the closest spot to sit which happened to be in the front row. He could feel heated glances and snickering from behind him. If only he could disappear then no one would notice him now.
"Hey, bro?" His seatmate looked over at him, "You good?"
He shook his head. His seatmate let out a boisterous laugh, he was tan skinned with vibrant red hair and turquoise eyes. He looked like an athlete with his tank top under his red jacket, sweatpants, and tennis shoes.
"Don't worry, dude, you're not the first one to be late to class." He chuckled, "You are looking at the tardy master."
"The tardy master? Is that like jujitsu?" His grandfather had him take several self defense classes when he was younger. He said it was for his safety, though he rarely got kidnapped with how much his father kept him inside the manor. He still had fun though.
"He means…." The girl sitting behind him spoke up, "Mr. Tardy here has been late to every class he has taken since the start of his first year."
"Oh, I'm guessing that's not good."
"Hey! If they had an Olympic sport for lateness, I would win gold." He said with a smug smirk.
"More like fool's gold."
"I'm Quinn. The bonehead next to you is Percy." The girl had vibrant orange eyes, dark skin, and wavy brown hair that stopped at her shoulders. She wore a black t-shirt with a classic movie monster on it, ripped jeans, and sneakers.
"Guess we're going to be seatmates, huh? Up top!" He put out his fist towards Hugo.
Hugo was confused, was this something kids did as a greeting? It seemed awfully different from a handshake.
"Hugo." He shook his hand up and down.
"You don't know what fist bump is?" Ariellle looked at him with a raised eyebrow.
"I don't go out much."
"That's so sad!" Percy gawked, "Here, I'll teach you."
He took Hugo's hand, closed it, and knocked them together. Percy then pulled his hand away and imitated an explosion. Hugo tried to do the same thing, but it fell flat.
"No worries, you did good for your first try." He smiled.
Hugo smiled back, then took out his notebook and started doodling in the margins. He was no Picasso, he just did it for fun whenever he had time.
"Hugo Agreste?"
"Yo, Hugo." He bumped into his shoulder, "That's you, right?"
He nodded.
"Go on, say present and raise your arm."
"Present!" Instead of raising just his hand, his whole body decided to jump out of the seat. He could feel everyone staring at him once more, it felt hotter, smaller, like he was trapped in an elevator. Even as he sat down, he could still hear their snickers, some whispering and glancing at him. Even Arielle was looking at him oddly, he hoped she didn't recognize his last name. Percy didn't seem like them, though it could be he didn't notice.
This day was just going great.
"Are you kidding me?! What's it going to take to let me transform?!" The girl had spent hours trying to convince the tiny god of destruction to spill his secrets. She even skipped school so she could gang up on him.
"Hmm, I don't know." Plagg hummed.
"Is this because of the camembert I got you? It's just cheese." She scoffed.
"How dare you!" Plagg mockingly gasped, "Just for that, I'm not going to talk to you anymore."
Plagg went back to his little home in the girl's room and stayed there, ignoring the girl's raving demands and yelling.
"Fine, I'll just get some money from my father to make me a superhero." She started tapping on her phone, "It worked for that Morbucks girl."
That struck a nerve in Plagg. As much as he hated the girl, he wasn't about to let the first person he talked to in decades kill herself using some subpar mortal gadgets.
"H-hold on, kid! I've changed my mind." Plagg came out of his hiding spot and approached the girl. She turned off the phone and smirked at the small god.
"So what do I need to do? Make some kind of deal or something?"
"I am not a demon, so no." He sighed, hoping he wouldn't regret this."Just say Plagg, Claws Out."
"Really? That's it?" She laughed, "It sounds like some cheesy line from a kid's show."
"You have no idea."
"Alright then, Plagg, Claws out!"
"I hate this paaart!" Plagg felt himself sucked into the ring like a vortex.
"Plaid? I mean Plagg? Where did that stinky no good ca-holy crap! I look hot!" She caught her appearance in the vanity mirror. Her high end, expensive clothes had changed into a slim, sleek, sleeveless black dress with grey tights and black boots. Her black hair was pulled into a ponytail with the ends dyed a bright green. She had a belt with the front that had the image of a black cat's face with its yellow eyes staring back at her. It extended out like a tail and swayed along with her as she moved. A mask covered most of her face, like the rest of her new outfit, it was black, though it had yellow outlines on the sides and little cat ears at each end. Her eyes also went through a change, they were now stilted and the scleras were now an orange while her iries were yellow.
"Paris, your newest sensation has arrived!" She shouted as she leaped out of an open window and onto the city's rooftops.
She felt the wind through her hair as she bounced from roof to roof. She felt like she could run forever, like she wouldn't get tired after running a marathon in this form. She stopped and landed on a chimney.
"Now let's see...if I'm going to be a superhero, I need to find some crime or...I can create some." A smirk lit up her face.
What's better than being right at the scene of an accident and saving the civilians just in the nick of time?
After several classes, Hugo was ready for lunch and so was his grumbling stomach.
"This must be your first time with cafeteria food! You are going to hate it!"
"Don't you mean love it?"
"Trust us, cardboard would taste better than this food." Quinn mockingly gagged.
"Excuse me, Hugo Agreste, right?"
A young man stood in front of him,
"Yes, that's me."
"Oh good, I'm Antione Fortin, student body president of this class."
"It's nice to meet you."
He shook it firmly, "I was wondering if you wanted to go on a tour of the school. I know how daunting it can be to enter a new school especially like Dupont."
"I-I don't know, I was about to head for lunch with Quinn and Percy."
"Hey, Antione's cool, we can meet up after the tour, cool? Percy smiled.
"Y-yeah."
"Don't worry, we won't be long." Hugo felt an uneasiness as Quinn and Percy left, leaving him with Antione.
"So let's begin, shall we?"
"Yeah, sure."
Hugo followed Antione around the school as they did the tour. Yet, he could still hear whispers and feel glances around him like everyone was staring similar to when he was in class. Antoine didn't seem to notice it or bothered by it.
"...and this is the library. You can find whatever books you need for class or if you just wanted something new to read on the weekend. Any questions?"
"No, I'm good." He hesitantly smiled, just wanting to go back to his friends.
"Look I get it. You're new here, you're the grandson of Gaberial Agreste. Not to mention your parents were stars of their own time. I mean anyone would look at you and just see them."
"They don't think that."
"Sure, they don't." Antoine smiled, yet this one felt off to Hugo, "Let's go to the cafeteria, I'm sure your friends are waiting for you."
When they went to the cafeteria, kids were crowding around tables, noisily talking to each other. They clustered around each other like cells, some sat on the ends or outside on benches.
"Looks like they aren't here. No matter, you can sit at my table." Before Hugo could respond, Antoine dragged him over to one of more populated groups. There were several teens he had seen in class, others he didn't recognize, but his eyes stopped at one of them in particular.
He recognized that blonde hair anywhere. It was Leon Bourgeois. He was well dressed, his sapphire blue eyes focused on his food, hopefully he didn't notice him yet. Why was he here? Hugo wasn't ready, he wasn't ready yet. What if he hated him? Loathed him? He couldn't face him, not yet, not now.
"You know I'm good." He tried to pull himself out of Antione's grip, "I'll just eat outside, you know fresh air and stuff."
He scoffed, "If you're worried you won't get along with them, I can assure yo-
"Just leave me alone!" He forcefully yanked his hand out of Antoine.
Crash! Hugo had tripped over himself and landed himself onto a table, causing trays of food to spill all over him. The cafeteria had gone dead silent and everyone looked at him as if a spotlight had lit on him. People were watching him, talking about him, hungering for the smallest bite of gossip. He couldn't take it, he couldn't do or say anything.
Hugo Agreste just ran. He sprinted until he reached the boy's bathroom and locked himself in one of the stalls. Tears fell from his eyes as he sobbed. Why did he think he could do this? He should just go back home and stay in the manor.
"Hey, Hugo? You in there?" Percy had witnessed Hugo running through the halls past them, covered in sauce and crumbs. He didn't even respond to them calling his name. He didn't say anything, just sat perfectly still in the stall.
"You look like you went through something rough and it's none of my business, but here." Percy slid a swim sweatshirt underneath the stall.
"It's not much, but it's better than going home in something covered in food."
As soon as Percy left, Hugo grabbed the sweatshirt and put it on. The sweatshirt was definitely too big for him, it was too baggy. His stained shirt laid beside him and his backpack. At least it was almost over, Hugo just needed to hang in for a few more hours. He could do that, right?
"Are you sure this is wise, Duusu?" The small lavender kwami whispered to the midnight blue feather tailed friend.
"Yes! With the activation of the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous, we are the only ones who can save this city. You've felt their auras, it's negative. Did you forget the last time a Ladybug's aura was negative?"
"All too well." That had been a dark time in history. The Ladybug had been rarely used for dark intentions, but when it did, there were horrible consequences. Creation, if kept unchecked, can create chaos. It was just as bad as the power of destruction.
"Why me? Why can't you go?"
"Because this could be your second chance! To be the hero of the story!"
"I don't know...what if he ends up like him? Humans can change so quickly within their lifetime."
"Then I'll save you and find the others!" Duusu chirped, "You can do this, Nooroo."
"Aright, wish me luck."
The two kwamis embraced each other one last time, the two had been through so much, being misused for selfish reasons had brought them together in a sibling like bond.
"You think he would be a good choice?"
Duusu nodded, "He's the son of Ladybug and Chat Noir, why wouldn't he be?"
Hugo had made it to the end, the school day finally ended. As he made his way to the limo, he saw Quinn and Percy who waved over at him. He waved back, at least he accomplished one of his goals today, he made some friends. He made sure to clean off most of the food chucks on his clothes and in his hair so Nathalie or his grandfather wouldn't do anything irrational just because he tripped and fell. The young black blue haired boy sat down in the limo with Nathalie already next to him.
"How was your day?"
"It was good, I made some friends."
"You have crumbs in your hair and you are wearing someone else's jacket."
"Okay, during lunch, I may have tripped then I fell and food got in my hair and clothes."
Nathalie sighed, "No one is bullying you? Or harassing you?"
"No, of course not! It was an accident, I swear."
Nathalie stared at Hugo, looking for any signs of deception.
"Alright if that's all that happened, I will let it slide and I won't tell your grandfather."
"Thank you, Nathalie."
The woman nodded and turned her attention towards her tablet.
The rest of the car ride was silent and Hugo was relieved he just got through the day. When he came home, he went straight to his room, changed, and sent the stained ones to the maid. When it was time for dinner, Hugo was nervous when Gabriel asked how his first day went.
"I made some friends. They seemed nice. I really like it there."
"That's good, it was the same Collège your parents went, I would've hate to send you anywhere else."
"Really? They went to Dupont?"
"Yes, it's strange that despite how much has changed, some things haven't."
Hugo nodded as he finished up his meal, "I'm going to look through some of my books for the next few days of class."
"Alright, just make sure to get some sleep."
"I will, goodnight papa."
"Goodnight."
Hugo walked away from the dining hall with Gabriel letting out a heavy sign.
"I should be happy for him, but with this Crimson Chevalier around, I am more afraid than ever."
"He seems to be a hero, but there's something off about him."
"Ladybug did it selflessly, she did not see herself as a celebrity or do it for fame. This Chevalier is and he's smug about it. At least we don't have to deal with a duo."
"I'm afraid you may have said that too late, Gabriel." Nathalie pulled up a video on her tablet.
"Crimson Chevalier is no longer the only superhero in Paris! Just today, a black cat superheroine saved an entire group of people from a broken elevator about to collapse five stories down."
"Miss, a few questions if you could."
"Oh but we'll have to make it quick, dear." The black cat superheroine smirked, "I can't detransform in the middle of the street."
"Who are you? Where did you come from? Is there a potential for a partnership with Crimson Chevalier?"
"I am Felina, I am Paris' new black cat, and absolutely if he can keep up with me~" She winked as she looked into the camera. At that point, Nathalie stopped the video.
"Great, now we've got two attention seeking superheroes in town."
"Should I get Nooroo and Duusu?"
"No, it would just cause a mass panic. Hawkmoth's return would just instill more faith in their heroes, they would essentially be untouchable, if we were to emerge once more."
" because the butterfly miraculous is missing."
"How?!"
"Duusu is not saying much, only that it was time for Nooroo to spread his wings and find a new holder."
He groaned, "Well whoever has it, they surely can't be as bad as I was."
Hugo just wanted to look through the first few chapters of his textbooks, then play games on his console, and drift off to sleep.
He wasn't expecting a small lavender bug, mouse, bug-mouse(?) sitting on his bed.
"Young master Hugo. You have been chosen." It spoke, how in the world did it speak?!
"How-what-oh mon dieu I must've hit my head on that table." He couldn't look at the creature without thinking this wasn't real. "Or I'm dreaming and this is just a nightmare."
"This is not a dream, master." The creature floated towards him, in its tiny hands was a purple locket brooch with white wings extending from it.
"A-are you an alien? an angel? Or a demon? if you are, please don't hurt me!" He backed away slowly, but he soon felt the window, stopping him in his tracks.
"I am Nooroo, kwami of the Butterfly Miraculous." It smiled at him, "And you have been chosen to become a superhero."
At that point, all Hugo could speak out was mumblings, then he fainted.
Nooroo sighed, "Get a new holder, Duusu said. It would be fun, she said."
Well at least he didn't scream and swat at him, Gabriel had done that the first time they met.
