Chapter 1: Barbe-Bleue (1.8K)
Jace's PoV
As soon as he crossed the threshold of his apartment in Seattle, Jace felt that something was utterly wrong. He couldn't tell exactly what it was, but he didn't like the dread that fell over him at each step he took into his own home.
Maybe it was the fact that he was anticipating seeing Celine more than he was Clary. Clary contacted him every day via WhatsApp messages or emails to let him know how Celine was doing in school, and about her birthday preparation, but Celine barely spoke to him whilst he was gone. Although, he had left longer than he had anticipated because Clary never asked him to come back, but he still tried to call his daughter every day.
The first week went in a blur, she answered every time he called, they talked about everything and nothing, they even made jokes. But then, something happened during the second week, and Jace had the clear impression that his own kid was dodging him.
And of course, the coup de grace was when he finally managed to get a hold of her whilst she was staying at his brother's and she told him that she didn't like him anymore. His first reaction was to get angry at Clary and to think that she had had dissed him in front of their daughter and stopped hyping him up.
But then he calmed down, knowing deep down in his heart that no matter what, Clary would never stoop to that level. Clary would rather entertain the perfect image that Celine had of him than confront her with the ugly truth that Daddy wasn't all that great after all.
After getting to the evidence that neither of the girls was on the ground floor, Jace took the stairs up and went to Celine's room first. After all, it was past nine in the evening, and maybe the girls were already sleeping. But when he opened the door of his daughter's bedroom, he was confronted with the reality that his heart didn't want to admit: Clary and Celine were gone.
The room seemed untouched, except for the lack of all the stuffed animals that Celine had received over the years that were supposed to represent his love for her. He walked inside the room, going straight to the dressing, and he let out a small sigh of relief when he saw that it was still as filled as when he left for London.
Maybe Clary had caved and allowed Celine to sleep with her to lessen the void his prolonged absence left in their home. So he went to their bedroom, the one he was dreading to enter due to how his last conversation with Clary ended, but there was no one either. He felt bile rise in his throat and took his phone out of his pocket to call Clary.
As the tonality rang in his ear, he went to his office to summon Kyle and demand some explanations as to why his home was so empty, but what he found there made him hang up. All the stuffed animals that Celine had cherished over the years, the ones she had taken with her at the hospital when she had gotten sick, the ones she had so carefully unpacked when they arrived in Seattle, they were all there, in several boxes in a corner of his office.
And on his desk, there was an envelope, standing proud where he would usually put his laptop. For a brief moment, Jace considered taking the cowardly way, just like he did all the years ago, and not open it. But Clary's neat writing on it gave him no choice but to see what was inside.
I'll never stop you from seeing your daughter.
With his throat tightening more and more, Jace sat on his chair and opened the envelope, where he found Celine's schedule for her school and extracurricular activities, as well as an address in Capitol Hill. And it hit him, clear as the day:
Clary had left him. She took his daughter, and without a word of warning, without giving him a chance to do anything about it, the love of his life had left him.
He looked through the window and at this view he had always enjoyed, but for the first time of his life, looking at the skyline brought him nothing. No peace, no pleasure, and certainly no sense of accomplishment. The two best things that ever happened in his life were gone, and he didn't even have the chance to fight for them.
With bitterness and self-pity, he read again the little note as he did his best to collect his thoughts, but his feelings were clouding everything. So he opened the bottle of whiskey that was on his desk and drank a glass just to calm his nerves and try to assess the situation.
At least they didn't go back to New York, or worse, London. They were actually a mere 10-minute drive from him. And they couldn't possibly have already properly moved in. Maybe he could convince Clary to come back home, even if she wanted to have separate rooms for a while. He could live with that. If she needed space, he could give her that, but she didn't need to literally move out to do so.
With his thoughts focused on how he was going to pitch this idea to Clary, Jace looked at his phone, in the vain hope that Clary might have called back after seeing his missed call, but all he had were messages from work. But as he dismissed the notifications, he saw the date, and it tore his heart a little bit more. It was the eve of his and Celine's birthday.
He poured himself a new glass of whiskey, to drown his sorrow this time, but when he brought the glass to his lip, he brusquely put it back on the table before getting up and looking through his phone to find the location of his next destination.

It was almost midnight when Jace finished, and he wasn't sure about this new thing he had just added in his life. It seemed like there were a lot of promises made, but he wasn't sure if he would have the results he wanted. Still, he told himself that he would give it a month, and then see where he would go from there.
He hailed a cab to go home, but when the driver asked for the address, he naturally gave Clary's. In all honesty, the evening had drained him, and he needed to see her. Even if it was just for a hot minute, even if she was going to yell at him, even if it would break his heart in the end.
On the drive to her place, Jace switched his phone off, even though it went against all his instincts. After all, Jamie did not sink his company during the past month. In fact, he had been doing quite a good job making it thrive.
Once in front of her building, Jace typed in the code to enter, surprised at how easily he retained all the minute information concerning Clary's new place, even though he hoped that this was the first and last time he would come here. But when he was facing the door that led to Clary's apartment, he hesitated for a moment.
He had been gone for a whole month, and no matter his words of love to her before he left, he had no guarantee that she did not move on. When he left for London, she was more than heartbroken, she was completely and utterly broken. What if she found herself whilst he was gone and realised that she was better off without him after all?
With a heavy sigh, full of hope and dread, he raised his hand and knocked on the door. A few seconds passed, but they felt like hours, and Clary opened the door, her eyes heavy with sleep, her small frame wrapped in a fluffy robe and her hair hanging in a braid. And at this moment, Jace had never thought of her as more beautiful.
She squinted her eyes at him, shocked to see him on her doorstep as she whispered, "Jace? What are you doing here?"
I'll never stop you from seeing your daughter. Those words had been echoing in a loop in his had ever since he read them. They sounded too much like a goodbye from Clary, like she would never see him again.
"What about you, Clary?"
"Uh?"
"What about you? Are you going to stop me from seeing you?" He asked, his voice wavering a little as he said so. She cleared her throat and rubbed her forehead, her voice soothing and reasoning,
"Jace โ"
"You're giving up on us, on our family. You're taking the easy way out?"
"I am taking the easy way out? Jace, you're the one who left and decided to take a whole month away, living across the globe. I never asked you to leave, and yet, you walked out on our family. Because it's always what you do, take an easy exit and wait for others to resolve things for you."
He swallowed with difficulty before taking a step closer to her and taking her delicate face between his hands, "You asked for time and space and you never asked for me to come back. I'm drowning here, babe. Iโฆplease don't give up on us. I beg you."
She frowned, about to say something, when her eyes landed on his watch. He followed her gaze, and he saw that midnight had struck, and so he played the last card he could think of. "Please, for my birthday, let me show you how much you mean to me.
He then leaned down and delicately kissed her, dreading her rejection, but, even though there was something different in her touch, she welcomed his kiss and the embrace that followed.
